14 Bagel Spots In and Around Montreal (That Aren’t Just Fairmount and St-Viateur) | Eater Montreal

"While they’re not what you’d expect if you’re looking for a thin Montreal-style bagel, Bagel St-Henri’s fluffier take on this doughy treat is nothing to scoff at. Located just a few blocks North of the Lachine Canal, this quaint shop also serves full brunch plates — so it’s a great option for a weekend morning." - Mallory Frayn

The Best Montreal-Style Bagel Shops Other Than St-Viateur and Fairmount | Eater Montreal

"Nearby in the same borough, Bagel St-Henri offers a different take with a fluffier, German-style dough circle rather than the traditional Montreal-style bagel." - Ashley Joseph

This place should be closed down. The owner doesn't know how to maintain the minimum standard of cleanliness. The food is improperly stored with no dates marked on anything. There is grease everywhere. His baking trays are "cleaned" every few months. There's mold in the fridges. The restaurant got multiple warnings over the past few months, resulting in $5500 in fines in January of this year. Plus there are 2 deep fryers located inches behind customers heads with no vent or fire system above. It is cleaner to eat in the 20 foot deep construction hole in the street in front of the resto than inside. The owner will most likely retort with some personal attack against us.. and that's fine. Pictures don't lie. Fines given to this restaurant due to health code violations are public information. And seriously, why deflect from the fact the place is noticeably dirty, address the issues, and work on cleaning up the place so people actually want to eat there. *Edited october 11... In response to the owner's blatant lies... Volker recieved written warnings from Mapaq. I have pictures of the notices. In addition, a bailiff delivered the documents in my hands with the fines in January of this year. I immediately sent pictures of the documents to Volker who acknowledged in writing that he saw them. Also in response to why did I rent the kitchen ... Because Volker told me he had never had any issues with inspections nor had he ever been warned or fined. The day after he got the fines, I closed the restaurant , then hired 2 people to do a deep clean over the next 3 days, for which Volker refused to pay because he claimed the resto didn't need it. In addition, the terms of our sublet included the use of his permits, which was one of the main reasons we decided to rent there. We were evicted illegally and are taking legal action. * Note... If anyone wants to know if a resto is doing the bare minimum of proper cleaning, just look at the vent over the stove.

This isn’t your typical bagel place — it’s something special. The bagels and German-inspired baked goods are excellent, but what really sets it apart is the warm atmosphere and the occasional special events (like Oktoberfest) where they serve delicious homemade warm dishes. Those evenings have such a cozy, community feel. Volker, the owner, is a genuinely warmhearted guy who clearly loves what he does — you can taste that passion in everything that comes out of the kitchen. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates authentic, down-to-earth food made with care. Go to item is the Shebang breakfast sandwich: delicious!!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting this charming German schnitzel breakfast spot, and I must say, it was a delightful experience from start to finish. The owner, who was incredibly kind and easy to talk to, set the perfect tone for a fantastic meal. Firstly, let's talk about the food. Everything on the menu was made in-house, and you could taste the freshness in every bite. The schnitzel was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, just as it should be. The homemade sausage was also a favourite, hint of spiciness with lots of flavour. What truly stood out, besides the delicious food, was the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the owner. His passion for his craft was evident in every aspect of the experience, from the carefully curated menu to the impeccable service. It's not often that you come across such genuine hospitality, and it made the meal even more memorable. I highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for an authentic German breakfast experience. You won't be disappointed!

I don’t write many reviews- only when I think a place is great. I stopped by here while killing time, based on the good reviews. Got the ‘Shebang’ breakfast sandwich and it is really excellent. The Poppy bagel was fantastic, the sausage is homemade and is really, really good. The tastes combined perfectly together and I would absolutely come here again in a second. Awesome!

According to MAPAQ records, Bagel St-Henri, located at 4354 Saint-Antoine Ouest, received two fines following inspections carried out in March 2024. The Montreal municipal court handed down judgments on September 5, 2025, totalling $3,500 in penalties. Inspectors noted issues ranging from the presence of pests or contaminants to premises that failed to meet basic sanitary standards. What MAPAQ found March 27, 2024 inspection: The business was fined $2,000 after inspectors reported that the site must be free of animals, including insects and rodents, and any droppings. During the same inspection, a second fine of $1,500 was issued for failing to keep equipment, utensils, and sanitary facilities properly clean. Despite the fines, Bagel St-Henri, which serves a variety of pastries and meals, remains one of the highest-rated bagel shops in Montreal. On Google, it holds a 4.8-star average with more than 400 reviews. For the record, that's higher than both St-Viateur Bagel and Fairmount Bagel, which each sit at 4.6 stars but with far more reviews in the thousands. Most of Bagel St-Henri's ratings are glowing, praising the quality of the bagels and the cozy neighbourhood vibe. But not everyone agrees. A handful of reviewers have left scathing one-star accounts echoing the kinds of problems noted in MAPAQ's reports: "The food is improperly stored with no dates marked on anything. There is grease everywhere. His baking trays are 'cleaned' every few months. There's mould in the fridges (...) It is cleaner to eat in the 20-foot deep construction hole in the street in front of the resto than inside." "Very dirty place, poorly maintained, crumbs everywhere on the tables and floor. The food, let’s say it's 'okay,' but the muffins are industrial, and the ham is not good. I asked for a hot chocolate, I got brown water with cold foam on top. Undrinkable, I had a stomachache!" "We found the place dirty, stinking of grease (...) We sat down, but we left immediately because the smell was so overwhelming. Do people really eat there???" Is it safe to eat there? Bagel St-Henri is not the only bagel spot to be penalized by MAPAQ in recent months. Both Brossard Bagel and Cote St-Luc Bagel have had to pay thousands in fines this year. Don't lie to me 🤣🤣🤣 it's on the Internet 🤣 keep trying to Deny it 🤣 we will ruin you According to MAPAQ records, Bagel St-Henri, located at 4354 Saint-Antoine Ouest, received two fines following inspections carried out in March 2024. I guess we're lucky enough to have you in the neighborhood (Saint-Henri). So many options on the brunch & lunch menu, adding to that you can grab some sweets to take out. The owner is kind, he'll make you enjoy the experience. Good portion & delicious meals.

I've been coming here for years for their absolutely DELICIOUS food, and friendly service. Unique homemade bagels, fluffy English muffins, legit German pretzels and other breads, homemade sausages, German donuts.. hell, there's even homemade hot sauce! It's a hidden neighborhood gem. You can't go wrong with your choices here. It's all tasty. If you enjoy their bagels, ask for a bag of "parbaked" ones to take home. — You finish them at home in your toaster and they come out as if fresh out the oven! (Way better than those industrial stiff bagels you find in the supermarket if you ask me.)
