Where to Eat on the Road in Between Dallas and Austin

"This old-school barbecue joint has earned raves from plenty of publications, but the food speaks for itself. Stick with traditional brisket and sausage, or try Schoepf’s brisket queso nachos. If someone in the car isn’t a beef fan, Shoepf’s also serves up a damn fine chicken salad sandwich on a croissant." - Courtney E. Smith, Amy McCarthy

The BBQ here was awesome. I travel for BBQ and decide to stop by after seeing a billboard on the highway. I had the brisket with a side of loaded potatoes and Mexican street corn. Both were outstanding. I was going to get the moist brisket, but the cutter offered a sample of the lean... it was fall apart tender and plenty juicy. The flavor was outstanding also. It's some of the best BBQ I've tasted. It was a little out of the way, but well worth the detour! You should stop by and enjoy some of the food from this little gem 😜

Google
One of the best BBQ I’ve had while in TX. Love the meats and the Tex-Mex spin on the menu. Great sides too - Mexican elote (corn) and the cucumber salad was dynamite. Staff came and check on us while we ate. Highly recommend to anyone.

Stopped for lunch on a brisket tamales day. Loved the brisket tamale. I would've liked a bit more texture to the meat and while it had nice chile flavor, it overwhelmed the brisket. The brisket nachos were massive and delicious. The jalapeno sausage was moist and flavorful. The brisket was very good (although sliced a bit thick-overcooked?) Despite being peak lunch time, the pork ribs weren't ready yet. And the prices are starting to be a bit high for the food. That said, I look forward to returning and trying the beef rib and quail.

Thank you so much for amazing food but even better service today! We appreciate your patience with ordering and feeding our family as we gathered after laying a family member to rest. Can’t thank you enough for making our day better than it started. Everyone loved their food and we had enough for leftovers so looking forward to enjoying it even more later. Street corn and turkey were my favorite!

Google
I came here based upon the reviews. I saw some of the photos that made me want to try. Today must have been a rough day. I asked for the Vaquero 2 meat sandwich. I chose the sausage and brisket. I asked for moist brisket, and my brisket was not moist cut at all and barely any brisket. It was dry and flavorless. There wasn't any bark at all. One plus is the mild sausage was good. This sandwich comes on a potato bun. I didn't care for the potato bun. it just wasn't a good match for me. It overwhelms the sandwich, way too thick and chewy. I had to remove my sausage and brisket and eat separately from the bun. A disappointing experience. If I come back, I will dine in and see if it's a better experience.

Google
A good spot to try if you're semi-local to the area. I had a spicy chopped brisket sandwich with mac n cheese and was overall satisfied. The brisket was cooked appropriately, but even with the spicy addition the flavor was almost too mild. Very simple and inoffensive meal but for the price for two I was definitely left wishing for a bit more. Side note there was no one to take our order for the first 5 minutes at the counter until who I presume to be the owner stepped up and helped out.

Yelp
The good - I had the brisket, pulled pork and a sausage popper - sides I had the stret corn and carrots beans - all spectabulous - pit man was super helpful - personality plus The bad - no free jalapeños lol and the counter staff was like, "That's a quarter!" LOL - the other thing first I asked for pinto beans and was given the serving - then I saw a familiar reddish sheen in another pan and asked what that was - I was told charro beans - prefer them over the pintos any day saw I asked may I have those instead - my helper hesitated and looked for approval - grudgingly she took the pinto beans back and made it obvious that she hated to throw the pintos away, gave me the side eye while doing so - luckily the meats looked just scrumptious and I wasn't feeling petty today lol - coz I could have walked out before mozying to the cashier - Shoepf's your pit saved me the quick drive in the next block to Miller's today!

Yelp
Overall decent but probably won't go back. Food was pretty good. Brisket was tender but all the spices were on the fatty edge portion. So not real flavorful brisket. Street corn and green beans were great. Service was mediocre. Meat servers & side item servers were nice. Other workers seemed a little annoyed at having to work.

Yelp
Food: The barbecue flavor is top-notch. The brisket is well-smoked and moist, and the sauce adds a delightful tanginess. If you're a fan of ribs, you won't be disappointed either. The pork ribs are juicy and flavorful. Service: The service is friendly and efficient. The staff is attentive, making sure you have everything you need without being intrusive. Ambiance: There was such a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. They make youfeel right at home!!!! Absolutely recommend any cant wait to come back and eat again.

Yelp
After church, we wanted some great brisket and ribs. We found both. You walk into a room where the meat is pulled and cut on the spot. The guy cutting was polite and recommended which cut to take first--top-notch experience. We picked up ribs, brisket queso nachos, specialty brisket street tacos, street corn and cole slaw. Ribs. Dad ordered too much, and my life is better for it. Just get them if you like pork ribs--slight sweetness. Brisket queso nachos and street tacos were rich, smoky, and delicious. Street corn and cole slaw were perfect sides. We enjoy "shuff's" once a month. So good.

Yelp
Schoepf's BBQ served up an unforgettable dining experience today. From the moment my wife and I stepped in, we knew we were in for a treat. The aroma of smoked meats filled the air, promising a delectable meal ahead. We decided to go all out and ordered a full plate of their BBQ offerings. Each bite was a revelation. The meats were smoked to perfection, with a tender, juicy texture that simply melted in your mouth. The seasoning was spot-on, enhancing the natural flavors of the meat without overpowering them. What stood out to us was not just the quality of the food but also the warmth and hospitality of the staff. They made us feel right at home, adding to the overall delightful experience. Schoepf's BBQ has undoubtedly earned its spot on our list of favorite dining spots. Whether you're a BBQ aficionado or just looking for a hearty, satisfying meal, this place is a must-visit. The full plate was a testament to their commitment to quality and flavor, leaving us eagerly anticipating our next visit.

Yelp
Awesome place! Went there for dinner and got a brisket sandwich and street corn. Food was fantastic and staff were very pleasant, great atmosphere as well! Went there again with the family and food was just as good!!

Yelp
Good Lord, I've never had so many food orgasms in one eatery! A friend had heard good things about this BBQ place, so my husband and I joined him on the maiden journey to eat there. My husband ordered the jalapeño sausage, brisket, scalloped potatoes, and mac and cheese. I ordered a BBQ brisket taco with street corn and scalloped potatoes. The street corn was one of the most amazing things I've had in my mouth! I couldn't get enough. The mac and cheese was creamy and delicious. The potatoes were comfort food epitomized. My taco brisket was so tender and good to the last bite. I don't recall what our friend ordered, but he shared his dessert. The peach cobbler was perfection! The only thing it could have used was a dollop of whipped cream or some vanilla ice cream. Service was accommodating, informative, and kind, especially since we arrived 30 minutes before they closed. The restaurant itself has lots of interesting seating indoors and out. There were fun decorations to take in while eating as well. All three of us said we couldn't wait to go back.

Yelp
Service was ok, friendly but not overly outgoing. Ordered 1/2 pound of wet brisket, a mild sausage and a jalapeño and cheese sausage. She cut me 2 pieces of brisket at 3/4 of a pound. Way more than I could eat, so a bit of it went to waste. The sausages were good but my buddy ordered the venison sausage and it stole the show. For me the street corn side was The show stopper. That. Was. Epic! I could have eaten a huge bowl of it. Fantastic! Overall a good experience.

Yelp
Now I know what the hype is all about! Such a great Texas music venue! The food is amazing, plenty of delicious choices(definitely not your average bbq joint) and the atmosphere has perfect Tex Appeal. I will be watching the music lineup and returning in the near future. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The brisket melts in your mouth. Perfectly cooked with lots of flavor. Street tacos were delicious very filling Great service and fun decor.
google avatar

Yelp
This is NOT good BBQ. It's expensive for what you get and not anywhere close to the top 50 BBQ joints in Texas. It's in the same league as Dickies or Bill Miller BBQ if that gives you a reference. I Do not recommend.

Kayla G.

Yelp
Everytime we eat here there is ALWAYS great service from the workers and the food is always amazing !! Highly recommend eating here
google avatar

Courtney H.

Yelp
I don't care how long the line is to get to the butcher here, it is well worth it! The juiciness and flavor of their Turkey breast and moist brisket are hands-down amazing. Their bbq sauce is excellent but you don't need it to flavor the meat- it's already flavorful on its own. The sides are great, too. I'm in love with their green beans and I couldn't tell you why- oh yeah, bacon, it's the bacon. My kids eat everything every time we come here and my husband never says no to this bbq restaurant.

Yelp
This is our first visit and and everything we put our mouth on was A-mazing !! we were super impressed with the quality of the foo, freshness and taste! we had tacos, brisket by the pound and brisket Mac The service in this establishment is much di from the norm. When you walk in to the pit you are greeted and decide there what meat you are interested in. Then into the dining room to get the rest of your dinner. So at checkout you have already talked and worked with 7-8 employees by this time and it's like the are all there for you, not just one waitress. Very unique experience and environment! So glad we went in early afternoon so it wasn't busy but I sure would love to come back for live music soon!

Yelp
We ordered simple just in case because it was our first time. I also picked up a piece of strawberry cake to try. Happy I tasted it before we left. The piece of cake was $7.95. It was crispy not soft. I did get a refund after the one bite. Some lady came to the table and told me the cakes were fresh. Made this morning. We were there at 7 pm. If they were made "THIS MORNING" ma'am. No it's not fresh. I was set back by the way she made it a point to come to our table to tell me she checked the cake I returned and it was a good piece. HAHA okay per you. Per me, nope. Also the brisket did not have a smoke ring. I was told the grilled cheese was on Texas toast. I got 2 thin small slices of brisket on each side of the sandwich cut in half. And looked like regular old bread to me. Food came out at 7:09 pm. We ordered food at 6:41 pm. We also ordered the Brisket Mini tacos. Unfortunately our food was cold. They call themselves TexMex. They should NOT do this. Overpriced for what you get. Food is mediocre. Wish I would've read the reviews. Live & Learn. Valentina's it is. Those ribs are worth the 75 bucks we pay! We drop an easy 200 bucks at Valentina's any day. UPDATE: Response from owner: Ronnie with my replies Our bbq restaurant has been in business 31 years including 14 years of serving Tex-Mex BBQ. We are a restaurant that serves high quality meats, homemade sides and desserts. Everything is made fresh every day. We smoke our meats and prepare our other food items all day long. The items y'all ordered this evening are popular menu items with our customer base. As far as your concerns~ The strawberry cake was made fresh this afternoon. MJ: wrong. I was told made fresh this MORNING The cake and icing are both made from scratch. We checked the cakes and they were soft. MJ: hilarious You were given a refund when you stated the cake was hard. MJ: thank you for that. Not worth the 8 bucks. The brisket you ordered is prime brisket and it's smoked a minimum of 12 hours. The brisket grilled cheese is served with our prime brisket and is served only on Texas Toast. MJ: Not Texas Toast We do not substitute for regular bread. The brisket grilled cheese and the street tacos are considered kitchen items. All kitchen items are made fresh to order per customer. It states on our menu these items can take a minimum of 20 minutes. It also states it can be longer depending on the time of day and and the number of items they are preparing in our kitchen. The restaurant was busy this evening especially with kitchen orders. MJ: when we were there your establishment was NOT busy. However we didn't realize you close at 8 pm. Made sense of the quality of food. Mediocre We tried to let everyone know that was ordering kitchen items there would be a longer wait time besides it stating it on our menu. We are a restaurant not a fast food chain. MJ: minors took our order. And they did not mention the wait time. Customer service is important to business. MJ: Reading this response cannot tell that customer service is important to you. So we try our best to walk around and check with our customers to make sure they are pleased with everything. We did walk up to your table to ask how you food was and yall stated it was great. MJ: you are WRONG. My husband didn't breathe a word. I NEVER said great. I said good and I said it with a question and I was only trying to be kind. Had the cake issue NEVER been brought back to to our table. I wouldn't have even bothered leaving a review. She was unprofessional about it. Our reputation is built on serving high quality, fresh food and we stand 100% behind everything we offer to our customers.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. I ate here around 10 years ago and I don't know why I haven't been back since. This is my new go-to for BBQ. Brisket moist, pulled pork was the best I've ever had, as well as the jalapeno sausage too. Sides were delicious also. Didn't get to try desserts but I'll save that for next time .

Yelp
A few simple words will describe this place A TEXAS LEGENDARY BBQ AND MUSIC SCENE! It's a great family owned and operated business that takes pride in serving TRUE QUALITY FOOD and hosting great music!
google avatar

Yelp
Great brisket. It is a little pricey but worth it. Rib eye is sometimes good and sometimes it fails.

Yelp
Came on a Friday for late lunch and was almost immediately served. One pro-tip: unless you want to get pure meat, keep going and skip the folks getting sliced protein and enter the kitchen area. After you get your meat, next up sides and then you can place an order if you want something from the kitchen. If the cutter tells you it will take 20 minutes: don't trust him. Took us WAY less time than that. I had the brisket tacos and they were awesome. Three very flavorful tacos with plenty of smoky brisket. My lunch partner had the pulled pork burrito and it was ginormous! Tasty too. For a side, we shared the Borracho beans and Mexican street corn. Both were solid. We finished off a piece of the Sopapilla cheesecake which was insanely good. Next time I'm traveling up to Dallas, I'm going to make sure I take a break and have another meal here. Definitely a great spot.

Caroline S.

Yelp
Get the corn. You might think you don't want sides but I'm going to dream about this corn the rest of my life.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing staff, service, and atmosphere! The food is so good! Best BBQ joint hands down in the state of Texas!
google avatar

Jarrad W.

Yelp
Visited this place this week and what a disappointment. It was Tuesday around 6pm and after some friends raving about lunch it was time to check it out. After waiting for a few people In front of us here is the break down. Brisket - they have it (it was Good) Sausage - they have it Pork Chops - OUT Turkey - OUT Ribs -OUT Beef ribs - OUT Sausage Popper- OUT Qual- OUT So if you want Brisket or Sausage this is your place! Anything else we'll this might not be the place for you. I had sides only and a taste of brisket.

Yelp
Saw Lindsey Strum aka Flyleaf here. Was awesome! Tacos were $10 but hey, it was concert food! Haven't tried the BBQ yet, maybe one day.

David B.

Yelp
Simply amazing service and food!! This was our first time at Schoepf's and we totally felt at home. They walked us thru what to order and we even got a sample of that amazing brisket!! Thank y'all so much.

Yelp
Stopped in today to try Belton's barbecue, and it was top-notch. The brisket melted in your mouth and the sides are excellent.
google avatar

Brad M.

Yelp
While I'm not sure this is Top 10 bbq in Texas, it's pretty good. We stopped on the way to San Antonio. It's a quick little exit, easy-on, easy-off on the South side of Temple, just past the city limit sign! It's a nice big restaurant for sit down service, but you can also get to-go orders. A quick little stop for great Chopped Beef sandwiches is all you need, but alas, no fries! They do have several side options though, so you can just pick what you want! The Chopped beef sandwich is simple and good. Choose regular or sweet-and-spicy on the sauce, and it comes with pickles and onions! What else could you possibly want? (Hint: if you need more, you need better BBQ). This is clearly a family run joint, so I have no problem paying a little extra! If you want cheap, there's a ton of soul-less fast food restaurants up the street. If you want quality, flavor, and to help a small business... If you want to support Texas and continue to have REAL BBQ options... then stop in! You won't be disappointed! Remember to #ShopSmall #ShopLocal especially in restaurants! 4 STARS for good food and Great service!
google avatar

Keasha E.

Yelp
My absolute favorite BBQ place! Ribs delicious, brisket perfection, sausage very tasty, chicken yes, all of their sides homemade and super good! Service is fairly quick and easy, lots of areas to sit inside and out. It is expensive but definitely worth it!
google avatar

Barnes R.

Yelp
When we lived in Texas, we used to visit Schoepf's fairly regularly, so when we were in Texas last week, we had to stop. The brisket and sausage was just as delicious as we remembered it, as well as the sides. The jalapeño cheddar sausage is just fabulous and the brisket, as always, is fork tender, moist and smoky. They have a handful of sides to go with that are all tasty, but honestly, the smoked meats and sausages are the stars IMHO. If you're in the Belton area, stop and give 'em a try. You won't be sorry.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
It's bbq it's gonna be pricey. Brisket and sausage were delicious. I ordered the special Philly brisket. Bread was so soft and spongy it absorbed the sauce but didn't fall apart. We also got a side of the street corn. Absolutely delicious. I do recommend.
google avatar

Cassanra S.

Yelp
I will be 100% honest... I have never been a big BBQ food person but have always eaten it if that what was being served. However, my man was craving BBQ so on our way from TX to OK (with 3 dogs) we decided to stop at Schoepf's and it was the BEST decision we have agreed on together in a long time. The restaurant itself was an awesome atmosphere, but seeing we had 3 dogs we sat outside on their patio area, which was also awesome and very dog friendly. Now to get to the best part... THE FOOD!!! I ordered the turkey and brisket Mac and cheese and my husband ordered the sausage and brisket. We both were extremely happy with everything we ordered but I have not been able to stop thinking about that brisket, Mac & cheese! By far the best tasting Mac and cheese I have ever had! I highly recommend this place! I know we will be going back on our next road trip!! Didn't say anything about the service part because I was outside with the doggies but my husband said everyone was very nice!

Stephania W.

Yelp
Ok! I've eaten here for years like when the dad owed it and there was one in Killeen that the misfits burned down and stopped eating here awhile back because of issues (look up prior reviews) My friend asked me to go the other day and I really really was reluctantly but went. The service was excellent. The food was delicious. The Ambiance was outstanding. It was just as I remembered it to be days gone by. It's the best barbecue around and the sides are delicious. I see ratings on other Joints and have eaten at those places because of there ratings in Texas Monthly and Triple D. Out of all of them even with my past ratings Schoepf's is superior, but I don't write for those magazines. If I did they would rate number 1. Don't waste your time at other places spend your money for excellence. Matter of fact I went back with my husband the next day. A-1 service, food off the chain with spices and the atmosphere was welcoming. I'm glad something's have changed and they have kept the taste of the meat the same throughout the ages and added some sides that are mouth watering to the taste and nourishment for the soul. I didn't think I'd ever return to this place but it calls my name because it just that good! Stop in and I hope you find love in the air as well as the food being delicious. I'm still a lover of this joint and will by pass Miller's every time. The price point is higher but the food stands the test of time. So, I'll continue to pay for excellent food, clean and outstanding atmosphere & great service. In the past sometimes the food was off and the service shaky. That seems to be fixed with better service and them making their own sausage. I hope they continue on this path. I'm buying what their selling as long as it comes with a smile. PS I've given a truthful rating each time. Last time I rated I was not pleased. Today I'm pleased and glad I came back, back and back The sausage was juicy not dried out. I like my brisket moist not fatty. It's was moist and not fatty. The baby back ribs were tender, moist and juicy all in the same bite. The original sauce is my favorite. I asked for more pickles and received more without challenge or charge. I'm have a great day with Schoepf's I'm back today for those excellent nachos to go. Those were off the chain when I order in house. I hope there just as great to go. Will see tonight Stephania
google avatar

George D.

Yelp
The moist is insane! I try to stop here ever time i come back from Dallas. I have not had a bad thing on the meat menu. Ribs, sausage, brisket are all outstanding! The hardest part is getting off I35 to get here.

Samantha M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, great food. The brisket is amazing, melts in your mouth like butter. The sides are fresh. I would have to say that this is the best BBQ I've had ever!! I will recommend this place e to all friends, family, and to just about anyone who would ask where a good place to eat BBQ is at.

Yelp
wonderful as always. the habenero burnt ends are fantastic. Great food Great service Great value.

Yelp
I specifically called and asked if two in my party could be accommodated with their vegan dietary needs. The young man answering checked and assured me that we could have an unbuttered, plain baked potato. We were happy with that as it would allow the rest of my family to enjoy the barbecue they'd wanted while visiting here. We checked in and ordered, again asking to make sure that there would be no butter in the potatoes. We had to settle for one potato to share as they were out after my first call 20 minutes early. This was fine. Then the lady who brought the potato had it loaded with butter. I informed her in Spanish that it needed to be plain since we are allergic. She didn't understand so I repeated in Spanish. She responded that the potatoes were wrapped in a paper that had butter in it. Then she proceeded to point us out to another Spanish speaking server, and they laughed and walked away. I am not an unkind person, but she sure as hell was. So here I am. Writing to inform that the people bringing your food to you, NOT a those taking your orders, were unkind. Childish. And rude. In my mind, should not be employed here as they represent the restaurant even as servers. Maybe management should take a listen at their staff.
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
The brisket was so tender and noisy, and that was the lean cut! Everything was delicious! So glad we came!
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
I returned to this bbq joint recently and found the meat and sides to be better than my last visit. Perhaps the competition down the street motivated the owners to improve their offerings. Regardless, I would recommend it. I ordered brisket (lean) which was tender, flavorful, and not dry at all. There was a warm corn based casserole-like side (not sure what they called it) that was very good. I took the food to go so I'm not sure if the sitting area is any nicer.

Sean S.

Yelp
Food was Absolutely Delicious! Some of the Best Brisket and Sausage Iv ever ate! Service was great and the owners are on the floor and they were very attentiv!

Nancy C.

Yelp
Turkey breast and ribs were great as usual! I had read reviews about their corn and gave it a try. They were right! It was excellent! Enjoyed the meal very much. I'll never move from Central Texas. I am spoiled. They don't have Schoef's!
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
3 tacos, 3 medium sides, a brisket baked potato, a slice of cake- $71 The food is good, but this is Texas. It's not hard to find good barbecue. The prices are exorbitant and not even listed online or in store.

Katriana J.

Yelp
Love the food! Brisket grilled cheese, pork ribs, and street corn this time. Fast service. Good music.

Amy M.

Yelp
The Schoepf's crew was amazing to work with for my large event that brought people in from all over the country. As always, the food was delicious and the staff was fantastic. They were friendly, efficient, and provided a great experience. I would highly recommend for your event.

James P.

Yelp
Delicious bbq Especially the brisket moist and smoked very well . Very good sides and peach cobblers. Very friendly service so glad it's in my city. James P.
google avatar

Courtney P.

Yelp
Sorry, Miller BBQ fans - this is my BBQ pick. The sides and desserts give them the lead. The BEST overall BBQ place in Belton!
google avatar

Ta L.

Yelp
Excellent brisket, friendly and helpful service. If you've never had brisket that did not require bbq sauce , now's your chance. Excellent turkey and the baked potatoes was better than Ruth's Chris. Great example of why people that move miss Texas barbecue.
google avatar

Esther L.

Yelp
First texas bbq experience. I think if I had come earlier in the day, my brisket experience wouldve been better but the meat seemed relatively dry. But, the sides were delicious (the mexican corn and macaroni salad) AND the cheesecake was amazing. Would honestly come here just for the cheesecake haha
google avatar

Theodore S.

Yelp
Food and service was amazing!! One of the best in town! Customers and regulars are friendly! Get to actuality taste Central Texas BBQ!
google avatar

Kyle M.

Yelp
This place is definitely a top tier BBQ joint. The brisket was nicely seasoned with a great smoke flavor and super tender. The turkey was some of the best smoked turkey I have had in my life. Not only is the bbq outstanding, but they offer many untraditional items with a BBQ twist. The brisket tamale pictured was one of the best things I have ever eaten. It was huge, I would say it was close to 3/4 lb of brisket tamale goodness!
