Berolina Bakery and Schreiner’s Sausages have been serving Montrose for decades - Eater LA

"Schreiner’s Fine Sausages opened in 1952 and is known for its house-made products including sausages and cold cuts. It offers a wide selection of meats and German imports. The deli maintains a familiar atmosphere with its low-slung ceiling, wooden booth seating, and friendly service. Schreiner’s is a time capsule, with affordable pricing and a variety of sandwiches and soups available." - Mitchell Collins

My parents took me in when I was a little kid with the rest of my siblings to get meat. There is a lady that has worked there before I was ever born, still working to this day, 89 years old. She use to hand me bologna. I now take my daughter in 9 years old and she gets it too. I go weekly, to grab lunch meat and and some other meats. They make their product, I believe almost everything. The best tasting ever. They have spot that you can order food and sit down and eat inside or outside. Always people walking in for their sandwiches, sausages... The staff have always been kind, smiling, chit-chatting with me. Even customers come in and are polite and friendly. The atmosphere there is calm and nice.

Google
Maybe it was an off day for them, but the sandwich I had there yesterday was mediocre at best. Ordered a tri-tip on pumpernickel with mayo, mustard, pickle and cheese from the dour woman staffing the register. When I got it, it looked flat, like only 2 pieces of bread. I struggled to find the meat in the sandwich, and it mostly tasted of mustard and pickle. I'm more than happy to pay extra if it supports a local independent business, but at over $12 with tax, I expect it to have more than a sprinkling of meat. A Double-Double at In-N-Out is half that price, and easily has twice as much beef. You could argue it's a different quality, but what does that matter if you can barely taste it? If I ever go back I'll order a sausage sandwich instead, maybe I'll have better luck. Very unfortunate.

Wow! I can’t believe I had a hot dog with toppings such as ketchup, mustard, dijon mustard onions no relish & salami & bologna today! Very long time. I had good old meals since I was a kid. Great quality great amount of prices of course dine in! The ladies working inside the store was very friendly. I really like it a lot. Customers must visit there eat lunch & parking a lot outside the street. Very old never closed down since 80’s. I’m looking forward to go eat hot dog & any meal for lunch someday. Super satisfying!!

Google
Old time European sausage/meat shop best selection of fresh meat, fine sausages and cold cuts. You can also sit inside or outside enjoy the experience and have a made to order sandwich also a great selection of German beer. Pro tip, If your coming from a little bit of a distance bring a small cooler, you will need it.

Google
I really love this place and how it looks and what it offers and the great service. I might have made a mistake getting the knockwurst sandwich because, frankly, not that great. But their selections of beverages are really good, and I think next time I'm going to get the tri-trip tip or the grilled sausage for which I think I have to go on Saturday to get. I really want to do right by this place because I love the feeling of it, it looks like it's from the early 1970s and there's German periodicals like Stern magazine and Bild in all sorts of stuff, I really am rooting for these guys so I'll go back and get a better sandwich and maybe take home some meat because the freaking retail side of this is gorgeous and you can see from all the freaking photos I took

Google
Usually I love this place, I’ve been coming here literally since I was little with my family, getting knuckvurst sandwiches and deli meat, Ritter sports, and spaetzle. Everything’s always been delicious and the ladies serving have always been super nice. But today I asked a question of a young male employee, started talking to him, then without answering he literally turned and slammed the door in my face. Lol. Like dude, really? I went in after him and asked the same question to a young female employee behind the counter, she seemed annoyed talking to me but, at least I got my answer. Idk, I usually don’t care about this stuff, but it’s nice to be nice : ) and like, maybe don’t slam the door in someone’s face? Especially if they’re in the middle of asking a simple question? I was so caught off guard I still don’t know why he did that, maybe he was just having a bad day but, it really bummed me out.

Google
Well price and tasty, about $9 for the trip tip get it with mayo, BBQ and pickles . I got a side of coleslaw . I did try to purchase one of their German beers but after purchasing found out I couldn't drink on premises so they refunded however I wish the guy told me before hand. They refunded so no real issue . The selection of meats look really good and is a obvious local secret.

Olivia

Google
Always a great lunch spot, tasty sandwiches for a decent price. The portion is a healthy size but not too large that you can't go back to work without a nap first. Decent selection of German beers which cannot be drunk on premises. The tri-tip with everything and swiss is my go-to.

Yelp
They tried to pass off boiled ham for Lachsschinken thinking I would not know the difference. Anyway it was my last time bothering with that place as they dont have anything authentic German to really go there for. After Old World in Huntington Beach said they no longer are allowed to sell it as per federal law I decided to just let Youtube show me how to make it myself. Other than that, if you are actually looking for real authentic German food go to German Deli/Old World in Huntington Beach. Oh and maybe the Gourmet Sausage Company in Glendale - but that little shop has a limited selection.

Yelp
I've been coming to Schreiner's Fine Sausages in Montrose for 4 decades, introduced to it by my stepfather who would bring us pastrami with swiss cheese on Saturdays. The staff can be friendly and knowledgeable, though every once in a while, you get a bit of that classic cold German service. It's a great deli with excellent food finds--especially the European candies/sweets. Their sandwiches are always delicious, and they have a solid selection of soft drinks and beer. Always a reliable spot for quality eats and unique snacks! It's on my regular rotation for when I get a crazing for a great pastrami with swiss cheese on a roll.

Yelp
Extremely clean store. Awesome job. Customer service has declined so much. I guess this is the new norm. Employees not that friendly. I ordered a brisket sandwich with cheese. The meat and cheese were placed in the microwave to heat and melt. I wish it was heated another way, like toaster oven. Sandwich had very little meat. Just a tip vacuum seal your frozen items. Doesn't look appetizing to see freezer burn on food. This place just wasn't for me.

Yelp
Our favorite deli in the area for 15+ years. My dad used to bring me here often for a sandwich made at their back counter. Still hits the spot to this day, though I will say they're a bit smaller in size than they used to be for a higher price, which I don't love. I do love the cozy, no-fuss feel inside, stocked with lots of goodies like varied pickled items, mustards, cheeses, beers and sodas, snacks etc. that remind my mom a lot of her days living in Germany. Their meats are high quality and delicious from the duck breast to the bologna. Try the knackwurst and thank me later.

Yelp
This place gives *Really small portions for their sandwiches. When a sandwich has a few pickles, a couple squirts of mustard, and two slices of meat, it's reasonable for it to cost $5-6. That's what the sandwiches used to cost a few months ago. Now they're $10-$12 with the SAME two slices of meat... I got the BBQ brisket and paid $11.89, thinking I was charged for two. Prices go up, but the service and portions go down? Usually, an establishment either raises the price or maybe puts less product, not both.

Richard E.

Yelp
Schreiner's Sausage in Glendale has been around for 75 years and I decided to give them a try take some of our harvested duck breasts (15 lbs) there to make snack sticks this year. I normally do these myself, but wanted to give them a go and see how their smokehouse and sausage process was. I used P S Seasonings to source my dry ingredients as follows: spicy dill, pickle, and whiskey old-fashioned but I couldn't leave it just like that. The spicy dill pickle was mixed with pork and leftoverscotch bonnet pepper mash from my hot sauce, and I had them add high temperature blue cheese to the first batch. The second batch was whiskey old fashioned spice mix duck and ground beef with high temperature cheddar cheese as well as the other half of the scotch bonnet pepper mash. I couldn't have asked for a better product to come out of their smokehouse. The coloring, the flavor, the snap and the mixture was just perfect and I had them add some ascorbic acid for just the right amount of Tang to the finished product. Thank you, Lucas for all your help. You guys did good

Yelp
I suppose I should only review it based on the sausage--and the sausage sandwiches are pretty good. But they microwaved my pretzel. I mean, that is just a cardinal sin. It just came out a mushy, lifeless mess. The meat and sausages in market side of the place look pretty good, I'd probably stop here to grab some stuff for a BBQ or something. But the beeping of the microwave heating up my pretzel haunts me in my nightmares.

Yelp
Worst Service EVER!!!! "Closing" at 4:45pm when it says they close @5:30pm online?? They refused to serve us as we rushed in. When I was shocked and disappointed they couldn't help me with my over $100 order, the cashier just said, "I guess you're having a bad day." Are you freaking kidding me?? So RUDE!!! They blamed their early closing on the owner. And that he will be upset at them for not leaving at 5p. Seriously?? So FYI owner: your workers are turning away $100 orders cuz they need to close down 45min early at cant use one slicer past 4:30p. YOU JUST LOST A CUSTOMER OF 45yrs. Sad to leave the nostalgia, but i rather go to a place i don't have to BEG for their business in this economy !
google avatar

Mia W.

Yelp
Great spot for a sandwich. The deli has an amazing selection of German meats, like Bratwurst and liverwurst. There are too many amazing treats here!
google avatar

Todd G.

Yelp
Because Scheiner's now charges a $2 fee for credit card transactions, I will no longer purchase from this location. This $2 fee was put into place a month ago. This add-on charge is at the expense of the customer, and has therefore lost my business entirely. Very poor strategy on behalf of the owner. Many stores do not charge a fee to use a credit card. I will now take my business to locations that do not apply this "petty" $2 charge. Byeeee !!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem! They are a butcher shop/market/sandwich bar. Butcher shop - They have really high quality meats, and are suppliers for some LA restaurants. We have purchased steaks, chicken and sausages for grilling at home and always been happy. Market - They have tons of crazy imported European items. I see cookies and candy that my grandparents used to have in their home. At Christmas they have tons of good holiday stuff. Sandwich bar - they have simple, good quality sandwiches that are cheap. Brisket and turkey are my favorites.

Irfan Pillar C.

Yelp
I have been a customer for many years, unfortunately I have to say that over the years the authentic german taste of their cold cuts have been declining steadily into the same old american taste: salty, gritty, fatty,
google avatar

Duffy L.

Yelp
I have been a customer here since 1976. I have had them process venison for me and make excellent sausages and salami for me. Staff are all friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Their smoke room smells like carnivore heaven! Their cold cuts are wonderful and I never leave without several types. Great sandwiches, cold German beers, cheeses and more are available. If you need Oktoberfest supplies, you need Schreiner's!!
google avatar

Sevan G.

Yelp
Great place for a quick simple sandwich! Nice selection of dogs, lunch meats and sausages. Will be back!
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
Great sandwiches , deli meats of all kinds, tasty sausages, cheeses, German beers (don't open in house). Variety of chicken sausage in the freezer. Breads, imported condiments.
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
Believe it or not, I have been coming to Schreiners for over 70 years, ever since I was a little tyke. They used to hand me a slice of lunch meat over-the-counter. My favorite item is their liverwurst. I love a sandwich with it. Their housemade sausages are also delicious. Overall, a nice little gem in Montrose. you really can't go wrong with anything you buy there. The bakery next-door also puts out amazing bread.
google avatar

Rolf D.

Yelp
I highly recommend the smoked polish sausages and spicy polish sausages, they are the best I have tasted in years. we will definitely return for more. Service was also kind and knowledgeable.
google avatar

John N.

Yelp
The best smoke duck and turkey period. People are nice and get my smoke turkey every Thanksgiving for past 15 years. Best quality....

Loren S.

Yelp
Yelp has the hours wrong! They don't open until 10:00am! They claim that their hours were changed three years ago! Who's responsible to make the change on Yelp?
google avatar

Yelp
$34.24 my total amount. I came there on 01/18/23: had it on my bookmarks since last year and decided to come here out of the blue. I found parking around the side of the building (private). I walk in and wasn't greeted. I stood there at the counter to place a order in front of the deli and the both employees ignored me. No eye contact, words were spoken. I said excuse me, is the deli open and the woman behind the counter rolled her eyes and said go to the cashier. The cashiers tone and body was of a statue with no sign of life. A blank stare on her face with a mumble. I ordered the bbq tri tip on rye bread for a extra $0.60 and it was delicious. It wasn't big but I already had a couple breaskfast items earlier in the day so it was enough for me. (Kind of small) I had my choice of different sides and I chose a German potato salad and really enjoyed it to the last bite. I wasn't offered any size but a tiny plastic cup. I definitely would order that again next time. I bought some cookies, chips, and chocolate candies for my house. I almost bought shampoo but this place is definitely not safe. I nearly cut my finger on the glass shelf they have near the men's shampoo section. I kept looking at my finger while I was browsing the store and decided to skip the shampoo after all that trouble. I wish they had more German products that were in German and not German products that are in English text. I prefer to buy foreign products in other languages as a variety of products I allow in my house. Again I'm being very generous with my 2 stars because I I really enjoyed the bbq tri tip & potato salad. They lost the other 3 stars for not being friendly at all. I wouldn't recommend this place to a single soul and I wouldn't go out of my way to go here. You definitely get more German items at World Market. By the way they don't have any German soda!!! Shaking my head. #update# It's been a couple hours and I completely feel sick to my stomach. (Went to restroom) now I am having pain in my stomach!!!!

Yelp
I love German food and German delis. Most are, for various reasons, pricey, but not Schreiner's! I had a delicious sliced knackwurst sandwich. Perfectly balanced, with nice textures to boot. Good German beer selection, not just the same old ones (those, too) and available in individual bottles so one can mix and match.

Evelyn J.

Yelp
I was looking forward to a barbecue tri-tip sandwich and this is what I got mostly bread. What a shame.
google avatar

Roland B.

Yelp
Wonderful frankfurters and bratwurst. The rolls are very good also. The people are friendly and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor space for dining. They also have a great German beer selection. I will definitely be coming back and I have told my family about it.
google avatar

Nina A.

Yelp
Tasty Tri trip and ok rotisserie whole chicken. DO NOT expect the warmest welcoming or resourcefulness. Asked for some options to warm up for dinner based their own handwritten special, clearly written on a board and the older lady behind the counter said "I don't have those options, I just have these Beef ribs. I explained I was looking for some sort of already cooked meats similar to what they had on their special menu. Feeling already that she wasn't very helpful, I walked around looking at their options, I actually found a rotisserie chicken and trip tip. Made me wonder if she had limited knowledge of what are the options or she simply lacks initiative. Who knows?
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
We've been going here for years. What a great place! They have a huge meat case with so many different types of meats that it's unbelievable! Sausages, pork products, mortadella, salami plus a large selection of other items for sale. They also have a small deli where they make sandwiches and salads at very reasonable prices. Lots of beer and wines too.
google avatar

Yasmin C.

Yelp
I came across their cute little establishment today as I was searching for a place to have lunch. It's a nice shop that sells meats, candies and sandwiches! I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and was super disappointed! The sandwich was soaked in Mayo and mustard and I could not even taste the chicken salad!! Yuck! I had asked for Rye bread and it came on white bread. The staff is nice and everything but I will not be coming back! They do have a nice meat counter with sausages and German offerings! The candy they carry looked yummy! The elder couple that runs the store is super nice!
google avatar

Gohar K.

Yelp
Small unique market in the Montrose area. They sell imported beer, food items, crackers and more. Lots of cold cuts sold by the pound and frozen food section with bratwurst selection. German and European specialty food items also available. They have a deli counter in the back serving sandwiches and more. Reasonably priced. Outdoor sitting is perfect during the pandemic.
google avatar

Esther S.

Yelp
I bought the Droste cocoa for hot chocolate and paid $15.59. You can buy it at Amazon for $8.85 or drive to

K S.

Yelp
Grew up going to Schreiners since I was a kid in the 80's.....my father who was from Germany and my mother were friends with Mr and Mrs Schreiner. It was a staple of our family's weekend shopping and as a kid I loved going in and getting my slice of bologna. Which makes me so sad to see how downhill the business has gone over the years. Mr and Mrs Schreiner were the kindest people....so welcoming. Whichever generation is currently running the business now, seems to have forgotten what kindness, gratitude, and quality product means.....so many of the meats are fatty and gritty. The sandwiches are all bread and condiments. Customer service is pretty lacking from most employees. Aside from a couple of the long term women behind the counter, it's difficult to find a reason to return....so Idon't.
google avatar

Misty G.

Yelp
How have I missed this place? Great sandwiches and small shop. Had a really good grilled cheese with chips and a fountain drink. Lovely, quiet area in Montrose.
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Another staple of the community, Shriners has been in Montrose for as long as I can remember. They used to be on Honolulu Avenue when I was a kid. Though they've moved a few times since then, the still have the great quality that I remember from the beginning. This is the place to get a large selection of imported meats, cheeses, beer, dried goods and all things German & Bavarian. The deli and Grocery section are separate from the sandwich area which makes ordering convenient. Though they have a nice variety of great Cheese's including Muenster (my favorite) they only use Swiss or American cheese in their sandwiches. That's a drag but it is what it is. I had the hot pastrami sandwich served on rye with American cheese and pickles. Very good. The sandwich combo comes with a side of Potato Salad and a medium beverage. Definitely a quality product. If your in the neighborhood, you need to stop by Schreiner's
google avatar

Nina R.

Yelp
Okay, so this is one I don't get. I know Schreiner's has a lot of fans, but I am not one of them. The sausages are so fatty that I couldn't even enjoy them. When you bite into one, it's not juices that run out - it's oil and grease and fat. The way it coats my mouth makes me want to take sandpaper to my tongue. The sandwiches were completely unbalanced - all bread, hardly any filling. Imagine a big ol' piece of French bread with one pathetic sausage stuffed inside and filled with some greasy, overcooked onions and peppers. I also question the quality of the ingredients. In short, they taste cheap, as if they used the garbage discards from actual meat to cram into casing and pass off as sausage. The flavors are bland. There is no care in the preparation of their foods. I have had better sausage from a mid-level grocery store. Hard pass for me.
google avatar

J P.

Yelp
I've tried the polish sausage, tritip with swiss, and Saturday only grilled bratwurst with sauerkraut as well as bought red sauerkraut with apple and small gourmet pickles. I'm really happy with the quality of food I got at affordable prices and I enjoy browsing the store as I wait for my order to be ready. Right now they have a lot of Christmas sweets at the store to browse!
google avatar

Yelp
We went yesterday and had a great experience! This place is amazing! It's an institution in Montrose , it has been here for ages. We had not been there in a few years and were glad to finally return. We purchased some sausages and sauerkraut for our Oktoberfest party. the sausages, as well 98% of their meats, are made there. The sausages are huge meaty and delicious. They have a huge variety of sausages and many in the freezer case that are made fresh. I saw some roasts turning in the rotisserie , they looked delicious so I inquired if they sell those and they said they were roasting them and they would sell the next day as Oven roasted turkey! What??!! Amazing! I want to go back and buy some of that turkey! How amazing is that? To see turkey breasts being roasted then they sell them as cold cuts. So yummy! A pound of that and a loaf of bread and I am set for lunch for the week! I could hardly wait to return and try everything in their meat case, The meats look delicious. If you are looking for high qaulity meats and ingredients for your family, this is the place to go. We did grab some lunch on the way out. I ordered the roast pork sandwich, which was super tasty. I asked for Swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles, I requested it warmed. Perfection! We ate outside and planned when to return. Do your family a favor and give it a try!

Yelp
Old school. Since 1952. Schreiner's is a great place in North Glendale/Montrose area to shop for all your German Grocery needs. Located off N. Verdugo Rd, on Ocean View Blvd, this Glendale landmark is a must visit. The Service Deli has a variety of cold cuts, sausages, cheeses, salads, and fresh meat. This is a good place to buy quality meat and specialty sausages. Their condiment section is pretty amazing as well. All kinds of mustard and Sauerkraut. Schreiner's is your one stop shopping spot for all your German Deli Gastronomy Needs. If you grab a sandwich here, it's less than $5.00!!! I had to do a double take looking at the sandwich menu...$4.95 to $5.09 to be exact! The Black Forrest Ham sandwich here might be my new favorite sandwich. High quality and simple. For the price and quality this is the best sandwich in town!
google avatar

Renee D.

Yelp
Great selection a variety! Many hard to find and unique items! Schreiner's is an example of an independent small business at its finest! Every item is top quality and well curated to match the vibe of the establishment. I'm proud to be a "regular". My #1 recommendation for sandwich for dine in or to go is the Tri Tip with BBQ sauce on rye bread with Swiss cheese and coleslaw in the sandwich. But frozen the ready to bake meatloaf and at the deli counter, go hog wild on the sausages. Grab some canned sauerkraut and German candies or cookies for a treat later.

Yelp
Closest place to where I live where I can get a little bit of Deutschland while living in California! Love all the selection of meats and imported goods.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Really good food and nice staff . I've been coming here for years and they always do a fine job
google avatar

Librado A.

Yelp
Sad to see a bunch of whiny turds review bombing this place for political reasons. Schreiner's has been in the neighborhood for as long as I can remember (25+ years), and I hope they stay while the rest of "those" people leave. This has been my go to for fresh bratwurst and apple sausage, never had any complaints with their service. Places come and go, especially in Montrose, so for them to last this long says something about the establishment.

Jamie E.

Yelp
Best butcher in town. Great bratwurst, hot dogs, sausages, beef and salads. Large variety of lunch meats and cheeses too.

Jackie D.

Yelp
Loved their salads. Big enough for 2 people or for another meal. I get the protein salad which has so much chicken you might think it's too much.

Jon S.

Yelp
Great selection of sausages and fresh meats. Also frozen sausages. They also have canned goods and mustards, with sauerkrauts
google avatar

C L.

Yelp
One of my favorite delis in Montrose. Was having some friends over for bbq so bought some sides and sausages to go with the ribs I was smoking. Red potato salad with dill and coleslaw were both great. Also bought some uncooked bratwurst and jalapeño and cheddar sausage. Loved the jalapeño and cheddar sausage. It was so good.

Sophie C.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years! Every time we are in town, our to do list includes eating a hot roast beef and swiss on french roll from Schreiners. Eating inside is casual and welcoming. The staff are very welcoming. They also have all kinds of old time cream sodas and treats. Its a fun place!
google avatar

Gaby B.

Yelp
Came in with my infant and toddler thinking I would order a few sandwiches to try while picking up some treats at Berolina. The store was crowded but there was no line at the sandwich station. Proceeded to begin giving the young man my order when he informed that I'd have to stand in line to pay first BEFORE they could make my sandwich. Ummm yeah...no way I'm standing in any line with 10+ people to pay for a sandwich then wait some more to order at the sandwich station and then wait some more for them to make it-- with 2 young kids nonetheless. As I was leaving, another family... pulls up to the same counter...they same young man tells them to stand in line to pay but that he'll take their order NOW and start working on it....wtf lol like I'm still within ear shot bro! I'm not sure if that was a case of racism, friendism, ageism...not sure but that sure didn't feel right. Have a standard, logical way or ordering so that it's convenient and fair. Didn't get a sandwich but still left with a bad taste in my mouth.
google avatar

Suzy B.

Yelp
Best fine sausages, meats, poultry & cold cuts in town. Excellent customer service and super clean. They also have a sitting area and make fresh sandwiches to order.
google avatar

Mike O.

Yelp
We came to the area last week to visit the bakery next door and unfortunately couldn't go to Schreiner's because they didn't open until 10 AM. So this week we planned to go there after a trip to Huntington Library. The assortment of meats were very impressive and we left with a pound of bacon and a pound of smoked sausage, partly because there was so much to choose from it was a difficult decision. Those items were on the list of items that we definitely wanted to try and we ended up cooking all the sausages that night for dinner...delicious. This is an excellent place to meet your meat.

Linda C.

Yelp
I went here to get casings for making sausage links at home. There is a deli counter, coolers of higher end groceries and a sandwich counter. I got a corned beef sandwich from them that was perhaps the smallest sandwich ever but it was tasty. The service was awful. I got my casings quickly but my sandwich, even trying to get my order placed was painful and badly organized. The only check out guy left the register to help someone walk a half block to their car. Euro ambience. Very crowded and hard to find parking. Good and bad to this.
google avatar

Yelp
All of the meets are fresh and most are done in house. Everyone is super friendly and you can tell they take pride in what they do. The most authentic taste outside of Germany in my opinion.
