Best Restaurants in Portland, Maine | Eater Boston

"Steffi and Brian Davin’s cozy spot on Cumberland Avenue flies consistently under the radar regardless of its generous plates of homestyle German favorites including zwiebelkuchen — a rich onion and gruyere tart — smoked trout salad, and Rheinischer sauerbraten, whose saucy marinated beef and tangy red cabbage soak into ample bread dumplings. Fresh rye bread comes out with a paprika-heavy quark spread upon your arrival, the perfect bite to start pairing with whatever beer, wine, or cider you bring since the restaurant is BYOB sans corkage fee — ask the experts at natural wine darling Maine & Loire on Washington Avenue for recommendations." - Stasia Brewczynski

Making reservation is super easy! This place was recommended to us by so many people on our trip to Portland. We highly recommend you check this place out for an amazing German home-cooked meal.

Such a gem! Everything was fresh and felt like it was made with love. Can't wait to be back!!

Google
We had the split pea soup, smoked trout salad, potato pancakes, and schnitzel and would recommend them all! So much charm and character here, I definitely want to be back to try more of the menu.

Best German food around! 🇩🇪 This cozy, traditional Eastern European restaurant is a true gem. It’s BYOB, which adds to the charm, and every meal begins with perfectly baked rye bread, just the right amount of caraway, and a flavorful spread. We always start with the Zwiebelkuchen, an onion and Gruyère tart topped with arugula. If you’ve never had it before, it’s a must-try! Since we can never decide, we split two of our favorites: The Schweineschnitzel – thinly pounded pork loin, breaded and fried to golden perfection. We recommend pairing it with the rich potato gratin. The Schwäbische Spätzle — soft, hand-pressed dumplings made from flour and eggs, layered with caramelized onions and Emmenthaler cheese, and served with a cucumber salad with dill on the side. The textures and flavors are incredibly comforting and satisfying. This place is loved by locals and German food fans alike. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends, but walk-ins can sometimes get lucky. We also highly recommend their takeout. It was our go-to during the pandemic and continues to be a favorite.

Cozy BYOB place that hasn't changed in years. We all love this spot for an intimate dinner away from the hustle and bustle of other Portland restaurants. Husband + wife team serving German classics. Romantic. Maybe ok for older kids.

Google
A Truly Memorable First Taste of German Cuisine! This was my very first time trying German food, and I couldn’t have chosen a better place than Schulte & Herr in Portland. Words that come to mind: more than delicious, authentically prepared, home-cooked goodness, and an experience I won’t forget. The highlight for me was the Split Pea Soup—absolutely incredible! Every bite was comforting and flavorful. The entire meal felt like it was made with care, and the service matched it perfectly: warm, attentive, and classy. If you’re in Portland and looking for a dining experience that feels both special and down-to-earth, Schulte & Herr is a must. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

Our recent dining experience at Schulte & Herr restaurant was fantastic! From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed and comfortable. The ambiance was perfect, with warm lighting, cozy wooden decor, and traditional German music playing in the background. The menu was full of delicious traditional German dishes that did not disappoint. Everything we ordered was incredibly flavorful and cooked to perfection. We started with the potato cake appetizer that came with apple sauce and sour cream which was a great start to the meal. We then enjoyed the Jägerschnitzel with mushroom gravy, spaetzle and red-cabbage and it was absolutely delicious! Finished off with a delicious raspberry chocolate cake. The portions were generous and the food was presented beautifully. On top of the fantastic food, the service was impeccable. Our server was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. She even offered some great recommendations when we couldn't decide what to order. Overall, our experience at this German restaurant was unforgettable. The food, the service, and the atmosphere all exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for authentic German cuisine and a warm and inviting dining experience. We will definitely be back!

Google
Best German food you’ll have this side of the Atlantic. A great, cozy restaurant with run by a friendly German couple. My advice would be don’t sleep on all the side dishes here. Even if you’re normally not a sauerkraut person I’d highly recommend that as well, it’s light, warm and sweet. Highly recommend the pancakes with sour cream and homemade apple sauce, as well as the potato salad and the zweibelkuchen (onion cake).

Yelp
Wow! The food is delicious and the restaurant has a wonderful, warm vibe. My meal was so good - sauerbraten was outstanding! Will be back again when I can.

Yelp
Delicious food. And just plain nice to have an authentic schnitzel and sauerbraten restaurant in town. Warm and welcoming staff. Note: It is byob.

Yelp
The dinner experience at Schulte and Herr was superb. The interior decor is cozy german diner style. The waitstaff was attentive and kind. My wife and i shared the potato cakes and onion and gruyere pie for starters and we were vwry happy. The potato cakes are a soft fries type of latke that is divine. Reinscher Saurbraten stole the show. Its a slow roasted/tender meat in a gravy with red cabbage on the side. It did not disappoint! Delicious german food!

Yelp
Wow! Absolutely delicious. Authentic German food, impeccably prepared. Great service. (Thanks Shiloh) I've been trying to come here for so long but love 90 min away so had to wait for the right timing to be in the area.

Yelp
Schultz and Herr was a pleasant surprise. Who knew I would going to a German restaurant??? Only been there several times for brunch and they took reservations!

Yelp
Amazing little restaurant on the peninsula. Due to COVID it is currently take out only. Authentic German cuisine that'll make you think you're in Europe. The schweineschnitzel was cooked to perfection, it was thin and the breading remained on. We tried both the potatoes gratin and German potatoe salad and we aren't sure which one we'll get next time. You have to try the schwäbische spätzle too! Carmelized onions to perfection. While the menu is small, you'll want to get one of each! We will be regulars at this place.

Yelp
This unassuming German restaurant does a great brunch! My in-laws rave about it, and for good reason. Their brunch dishes are tasty, fairly priced, and uniquely German in a town with a lot of other brunch options. I had the sautéed spaetzle with caramelized onions, emmenthal, and chives, which was cheesy and delightful. It's everything I want in a breakfast carb. My husband and best friend both got the German-style omelette, which was good but didn't wow them. My best friend's husband got the potato pancake and lox plate. The portion was on the small side, but the potato pancakes were melt-in-your-mouth and perfectly seasoned. We all agreed they were the best potato pancakes we've ever had. The restaurant itself is cute but could benefit from stronger air conditioning in the summer. It was uncomfortably hot when we ate there last year. The owners were very nice though, and we'd happily come back for another brunch.

Yelp
This place is the best German food around, and the staff is very helpful and friendly!!

Yelp
We have really enjoyed Schulte & Herr's meals. For years we've been going to this small, sweet restaurant on Cumberland Ave. They now also do an excellent job for take-out, which we've done since the pandemic started. Probably not a bad idea to order the day before. I set the table at home, jump in the car to pick up the meals and quickly transfer it onto plates. It has still been perfectly warm without having to reheat the food. Being European-born myself, I'm really fond of the traditional Sauerbraten. My husband loves the Schnitzel and potato gratin. We also like the split pea soup, together with their homemade bread.

Yelp
We are visiting Portland and got take out lunch from here which truly exceeded our expectations! My boyfriend had the Wiener schnitzel and I had the kielbasa - both were excellent. The potato salad was particularly delicious and not to be missed. Highly recommend!

Yelp
How can I not instantly love a place that plays Andrew Bird's "Noble Beast" album? Just like that, Schulte & Herr, you've won my heart. I wouldn't say that German food is something I frequently crave... though I am weirdly addicted to potato pancakes (topped with BOTH sour cream AND apple sauce at the SAME TIME... weird? Maybe. Delicious? #'Chup), warm potato salad, and beets. These are dishes I can make myself however, so they aren't necessarily something I'd go out of my way for. Unless it's rainy and I'm feeling particular lazy... enter Schulte & Herr. No, S&H isn't located in the most picturesque part of town, but all the better for us locals... I think it's safe to assume that most tourists wouldn't consider walking that part of Cumberland. The quaint restaurant is tucked behind a few trees (and so it can be hard to spot if you're flying past), so look for the white Christmas lights adorning the window. The inside is "charming" - in my opinion the decor feels both European and like my grandmother's house... this isn't a bad thing. The meal started with complimentary bread (some multigrain rye concoction, I believe?) accompanied by a cream cheese/sour cream/paprika/cornichons/chive spread (which tastes EXACTLY and PERFECTLY how you would think it would). For those carboholics, you're going to need to show a little self restraint. Had I not been in such polite company, I would have plowed through the entire basket with no regrets. Unfortunately, I couldn't have the potato salad because it's got bacon in it (le sigh) and I totally forgot to order beets, but I did get the potato pancakes which come three to a plate and are about three-ish inches in diameter. Accompanying them are both sour cream and apple sauce (though you can also get them with lox and horseradish sauce, and apparently that serving size is bigger). I thought the pancakes were perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside; but, they were just a little under-seasoned - no worries, 'cause a healthy sprinkle of salt remedied that instantly. I'm not huge into lunch, so when I do eat it, it has to be on the "lighter" side. That being said, I have to admit... slathered with both apple sauce and sour cream, I was insanely satisfied with the portion and the price (how can you beat $5?!?!) of the pancakes. When I AM craving German food, I have no doubt that I'll find myself here again (especially if they continue to feed my soul with good music, too!).

Lovely food and service - recommend the potato pancakes with salmon and sauerbraten with potato gratin

Yelp
So was going to wait till I get home to rate this great restaurant!!! But no I'm doing it now. Lol What a great experience here in Portland, ME. with this hidden gem at the forefront. Had lunch here then came a day later for dinner. Well worth the trip to Maine for some German home cuisine. So for lunch we had the bread to start it off and you get butter with a cream cheese for your bread. Then I had the split pea soup. Let me tell you... order this it's a comforting wonder. As eating it I wanted it to snow. Lol For lunch entree' we had the the special of the day the kielbasa sandwich and bratwurst. So good! Second time here... We brought wine and started with bread and ordered the wurst platter to enjoy our wine. They are so accommodating here and super friendly people. For dinner entrees we had the schnitzel and the sauerbraten so good. It was so good. Oh I'm stuffed but I hear the dessert is good so going to try that as I sent this review out. Thank you so much for awesome service and great food. See you in the future.

Yelp
We had an amazing dinner here. We've been to Germany several times, and the food is authentic and true. We ordered the pork schnitzel with potato salad, sauerbraten with red cabbage and dumplings, and spaetzle with onions and cheese. The pork was thin and tender, and the breeding crisp; it was perfect! My husband said the sauerbraten was delicious and tender. My 3 yr old's spaetzle was very tasty. The server (who I assume to be the owner) was cheerful and attentive. Overall everything was excellent and I can't wait to return.

Yelp
We love this restaurant. My wife is German and appreciates the chance for some good German food. We have been ordering takeout now and have had nothing but good food from them. Yesterday I had the zwiebelkuchen, an onion and gruyere tart for a starter, delicious, and the smoked sausage with potato salad and kraut. My wife had her usual, schweineschnitzel. She says no matter how you try at home it is never as good as Schulte & Herr's. The split pea soup was her starter, perfect for the cool days. Great hearty food from a husband and wife team trying to keep things going during this pandemic.

Yelp
I brought my dad here for his birthday along with some other family members. My father was born and raised in Germany so we put the restaurant to the true test. Overall, we were all really impressed. The place is quite small with just a few tables spread out among one room so it's a nice intimate environment. It almost feels like you're eating in someone's home. The service was very friendly and accommodating too. Most importantly though, the food was delicious! In terms of the appetizers, the potato pancakes were flavorful and perfectly crispy. My cousin had the trout salad which she found to be really tasty as well. The entrees were just as good. I had the spätzle, which I was a bit skeptical of because I've never really enjoyed spätzle before but it was the only vegetarian option so I felt compelled to order it. Nevertheless, I was extremely surprised at how good it tasted. It was very cheesy and the noodles had a little crust on them that made them really tasty. I've now decided I need to re-evaluate my views on spätzle. I guess I just never had a good version until coming here. Everyone else enjoyed their entrees as well. My father had the sauerbraten, which he said was very authentic. We treated my dad to the cheese cake with a raspberry sauce for dessert. He loved it! It was less dense and lighter than an American style cheesecake. My father even went as far as to say that the chef made it the same way his mother did when he was a kid. Overall, it was a very successful birthday dinner and everyone went home satisfied. I definitely plan on coming back here in the future.

Yelp
Happened upon this place when my partner and I couldn't be seated at another eatery. Place is unique and the food was too, in a good way! Hearty fresh bread with some lovely spread. Those potatoe pancakes or whatever they were, like a mcdonalds hashbrown from heaven. The salad with some smoked fish, beets and capers was solid. I can't remember the names of our entrees and I'd butcher the spelling even if I did. Heavy and home cooked. That sauerkraut, was just lovely. My partner found the chocolate cake delectable, I wasn't blown away by it. Friendly staff, interesting space and great people watching from window seats. For us, new place and new food. Worth a visit for something different. Plan on trying to make their brunch some time.

Yelp
On a cold winter night went here for dinner. The place is "bring your own booze", but this was perfect since they have hot tea! The food is excellent. The portions are just right, not too big, not too small. I had the schnitzel with German potato salad and a side of sauerkraut. My partner had the fish goulash - delicious! The dessert we had was gingerbread cake. So good! The ambiance is cozy, service excellent and friendly - truly a great gem in Portland!

Yelp
This is one of our favorite places in town, along with Isa and Tempo Dulu. The food is amazing, and the staff is among the finest I've experienced. The decor is simple but clean and did I mention the food? You can't go wrong with anything on the menu and we've probably tried everything. Standouts are the German breakfast plate, with meats, cheeses, fantastic breads and jam. We usually get that and potato pancakes with capers and salmon and tons of coffee. And when they have their hash you do not want to miss it. It's out of this world. Their dinners are also top notch, the schnitzel being a particular favorite. All in all, it is a terrific place that we return to time and again, both for the food and the friendly service. A note about alcohol -- it's BYOB but they will provide cork and glass service so grab your favorite beer or merlot and prepare to be blown away by the food.

Yelp
Despite being in a rougher part of Portland, Schulte & Herr makes you feel at home and comfy inside. I love coming here for Sunday brunch. It's a good idea to make a reservation because it's on the smaller side and it fills up fast! I have seen people turned away at the door and told to come back in an hour or so to get a table. The service here has been great. The waitresses are intimately familiar with the menu and have always been nice to me and my friends. My only reason for docking 1 star is that on my last visit it was hot outside and pretty much just as hot inside. There was an air conditioner but for some reason it was not turned on and it needed to be. The potato pancakes with sour cream and apple sauce are delicious. My friends love getting them with lox and although it looks excellent I'm not a fan of fish so I prefer the plain pancakes. I ordered this with a side of sausage and felt full without getting that "I ate way too much!" feeling. Perfect portion. On my second visit, I ordered the Sunday special. The Sunday special is a beef pot roast with mushroom gravy served with delicious potato dumplings and your choice of a side (three huge slices of bacon, yum!). Now that I've ordered this, this is what I'll be getting every Sunday! It was a large portion, enough that I was full and had to push the plate to my friends to help me finish. The dumplings were the hero of this dish. Pro Tip: BYOB! That's right. Bring your own bottle (or two!) of champagne with you to brunch and have mimosas! The waitresses will bring you orange juice by the half glass for you to mix! Watch as the other patrons look upon your table with green eyes ;)

Yelp
We were walking around Portland and saw this small, fabulous German restaurant. It had homemade German food and was delicious home cooking. It's BYOB, so bring your favorite German beer or wine to accompany your delicious meal. Don't miss this delicious food when you are in Portland!
google avatar

Amber A.

Yelp
This place is a small family run establishment specializing in German food. We all tried different things such as the spatzle and the schnitzel. Everything was delicious! The portions are modest, not your typical American portion sizes. The restaurant is very small and parking can be tricky on a Friday or Saturday night, but it's all worth it. Make reservations and it's BYOB!!

Yelp
The night before I tried Schulte & Herr for breakfast, I had been complaining to a friend about the lack of "cheap eats" in Portland. While the quality and options on the Portland food scene might be able to compare with larger cities, Portland doesn't really have many hidden gems, or unknown corners where delicious food can be found for crazy cheap prices. With the recent closing of Kim's sandwich, this has become more true than ever before. While I would not call Schulte & Herr crazy cheap, their prices are extremely reasonable, and they most definitely are a hidden gem. Upon entering with my 16 year old son I realized that this was not a hipster hang, this was not a place trying overly hard to prove anything. This felt like a comfortable, homey space run by people who are truly happy to share their food with you. There are not a lot of tables and the place filled up quickly on a Saturday morning and while there may have been some hipsters, there were also two big tables of families with small children. The breakfast menu makes it easy to try a lot of different dishes and you will want to do just that. We ordered: The german style omelette with toast $7 Three scrambled eggs with smoked ham and toast $5.75 The potato pancakes (which came with sour cream AND applesauce) $5 Orange juice $2 Coffee $1.75 Everything was made in house (including the bread for the toast) and was really, really good. How many different ways can I say that Schulte & Herr has jumped to the very top of my breakfast/brunch spots in Portland. Honestly, when there are long long lines at Hot Suppa or Bayside American cafe or even Dutch's, do not hesitate to reroute your group to Schulte & Herr. They have delicious and interesting breakfast items, will NOT break the bank, and you will most probably be able to score a table the minute you walk in! Don't be a brunch drone, create your own buzz and start a new trend. Check out Schulte & Herr!

Yelp
Service was so warm and friendly. Food was likewise. We had the bratwurst with German potato salad and sauerkraut. This was really good sauerkraut. And I think I'm converted to German potato salad now...potato pancakes were the best we've ever had.

Yelp
Top five restaurant in Portland. Such an unassuming little hole in the wall, exactly what a restaurant should be. The focus is all on the home cooked german specialties. I used to get this type of food growing up in queens, it brings be back. And it's BYOB which saves a ton of money. This is truely a hidden gem, I don't want others to find it but the owners deserve the recognition. Pass on the crowded old port with its pretentious overpriced restaurants like Scales and Grace. You're only paying for the rent and decor at those places. Here you're paying for the food, exactly what a restaurant should be. Five stars.

Yelp
Great German food brunch. People in my party enjoyed potato pancakes, schnitzel, and spaetzel, while I had the Bergmannkiez (a bit of a continental breakfast): Fresh bread with a variety of cured meats, cheeses, and jam. (This was after a heavy meal the night before, so I was glad there was a lighter option.) The meal was very pleasant and delicious, and the staff were friendly. I felt right at home.

Bjorn M.

Yelp
I had the potato pancakes with lox, a side of home fries and a side of roasted beets. It was one of my top 10 favorite brunches, anywhere. Reminded me of my German mother's cooking, and the coffee was perfect dinner brunch strength for me. Really strongly recommend this place. I eat quickly and in large amounts, what I ordered was perfect for me. People on here complained about portion size, this kept me full until a late dinner. The waitress was really friendly, the interior is weird, kind of like an old doctors office, but I gave not one eff about that. Food and attitude are what matter and they were both spot on. I'll be back here for sure next time I'm in Portland.
google avatar

Jeremy N.

Yelp
I had to try this German restaurant and compare it with what they have in Europe. So I ordered the bratwurst, sauerkraut and potato salad. I would say that it was just OK. Maybe I'm a little spoiled and it's not a fair comparison. ;) It's a cute little place and the waitress (I think probably the owner as well) was super nice. I wish they opened a little earlier though and offered brunch/breakfast every day. I will definitely go again to try the Sunday brunch. And a big Thank You to Ms. Steff for the great conversation and intro into the Maine Yelp Elite group!

Yelp
After reading rave reviews from Local food bloggers, I took the family here for Sunday brunch and was blown away! Amazing food, great service and fantastic atmosphere. Good luck trying to get into this small, yet stellar restaurant one word really gets out

Yelp
I finally went to Schulte & Herr today after trying a few times in the past just to find out they were closed (they have odd hours but Sunday is the day to go). The decor is homey and makes you feel like you're at your grandmothers house for Sunday brunch. On Sunday they offer a special Sunday roast which is out of this world. $12 for pot roast with mushrooms, a thick juicy sauce, (1) side of your choice, and potato dumplings. The potato dumplings are hands down, one of the best things I've tasted so far in 2014. They have an amazing treasure inside the potato dumpling which was maybe fried bread ? I'm not sure, but I won't question the dumplings amazingness and move on to other points in the meal. I actually didn't have the pot roast I just siphoned off some of my boyfriend's meal (in return for a fourth of my belgian waffle). I heard good things about the Belgian Waffle so I had to order that. It had a crispy crust and a delicious blueberry syrup on top. In some spots the blueberry syrup made the waffle a little soggy but by folding it over on top of a crisp part - the consistency was just right. I can't wait to go back and try the potato pancakes with lox or the bergmannkiez! The coffee was bottomless and great too. They don't have many seats but I feel like the small table set-up is great for Schulte & Herr because they can be attentive enough to you (i.e. full water glasses, coffee refills, etc.). A lot of places default to more table tops and the service ends up suffering but at Schulte & Herr you'll feel right at home.

Yelp
I LOVE family-run restaurants. Sometimes they come at the price of slow service, which we experienced for brunch one Sunday. Home cooking is worth it. I had the bauernfrühstück: german-style omelette with potatoes, onions, & chives. It was a little bit more dry compared to traditional omelettes that I have had. Maybe it was the absence of cheese? It was different, but very flavorful and I would order it again. It was also very large for the price and came with delicious home-made bread. ($8 I think?) My company had potato pancakes with house-cured lox, horseradish sauce, capers, & cornichons with applesauce & sour cream. The lox was much milder than what you'd find at a bagel shop. You could tell it was house-cured. They usually have home-made jam to go with the bread, but ran out that day. They also ran out of pan-fried potato-raisin bread with maple syrup which I would really like to try next time. Being out of a menu-item is disappointing, but to be expected with a family-run restaurant. Appreciate it for what it is!

Yelp
Six of us went to dinner here and enthusiastically enjoyed everything. The menu is simple and it all sounds delicious. Two of us ordered the potato pancakes which are light brown and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. One of us got them with sour cream and applesauce and I got them with their house-cured salmon, cornishons, capers and sour cream. The combination was fantastic! That along with a side salad was enough of a meal for me. Two of us got the schweineschnitzel: thinly pounded, breaded, and fried pork loin with potato gratin and an optional mushroom sauce. It was just wonderful! Two of us got the rheinischer sauerbraten: marinated, tender beef roast served with braised red cabbage & pan-fried bread dumplings. They couldn't stop raving about how perfect it was: neither too sweet nor too sour and the beef was so tender, it melted in your mouth. One person ordered the roasted bratwurst with sauerkraut and german potato salad. He said the cold potato salad was a nice contrast to the hot brat and devoured it all! Lastly, two people ordered a side portion of the sauteed spätzle with caramelized onions, emmenthal cheese and chives. This is on the menu in a full portion with the cucumber dill salad. The spatzle is just amazing; the kind of dish you dream about until you go back and order it again! The restaurant is open for lunch 3 days a week and brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays. To see a sample menu, click here: https://schulteundherr.wordpress.com/about/ The neighborhood is not the worst, but not the best, but it's close to Merrill Auditorium and was a nice place to go before a concert. It is bring your own beer, wine, etc. We made reservations for 5:00pm on a Sat. night for dinner and, although we were the first patrons in the restaurant and might have thought we wouldn't have needed reservations, it was a good thing because the small restaurant quickly filled up and we were told they were fully booked that evening. Everyone in our group cannot wait to go back to Schulte and Herr again, and again!

Yelp
Simplicity and truth of cuisine were the keys here, and appropriate to celebrate for Sunday Brunch on Easter Sunday which celebrates the life and times of a simple man whose words have been revered, reverberated, and reinvented over the millenia. It's a wonderful, very humble eatery that is homesteading in a nicely recovering neighborhood. The food is real German, not some embellished overly-hip brew-pub's tweak. The kind of place you might dine in a small German village and speak of the amazing meal that you had in that little town in seemingly nowhere. I had the traditional holiday roast lamb with the potato balls and root vegetables and it was heaven. We also tried the waffles with the fresh plum compote and the raisin-potato french toast, both of which, off of the very short, simple menu, stood out. For dessert we tried the carrot cake and the nutella cake, both of which were excellent, and made use of traditional frosting methods using marzipan to help stiffen the icing and preserve it while giving it wonderful balance against the soft baked goods inside. Service was equally good, and the surroundings a bit plain but spotless and perfect. Five stars go to those who do exceedingly well setting out what they hope to achieve in a culinary experience, and Schulte and Herr does this with admirable ease, style, and, most rare in the dining game, grace.

Yelp
My first visit here for a Sunday brunch. Parking is along Cumberland Ave. We found a spot right up across the street. The place is pretty tiny, about six or seven tables, with one table for six, and the rest two tops. It is a plain but quaint interior, with the owner and one hostess waiting on all of the tables. It wasn't abusively slow, but definitely plan on waiting longer than average. The brunch menu was a bit limited, but definitely had the standard German favorites. The soup was good....a flavorful white bean and bratwurst semi thick soup, with fresh chives. I tasted a couple spoonfuls and enjoyed it. My GF also had the roast pork and gravy, with braised Brussel Sprouts, and potato dumplings. My only reference to the dumplings are gnocchi, which are much smaller, more texturally soft, and with a more velvety essence. These bad boys were big and bulky, with a bread stuffing in the center. Better used as field battle weaponry, I would politely pass on these. The sprouts were cooked well, the pork was flavorful, and the gravy was scratch made and had excellent flavor. A nice size portion also. I had two eggs with bratwurst, with sauerkraut and potato salad. While not a combo I'd generally gravitate towards, it was simply made in a good way. The brat was large, plump, and tasty, and accompanied with a nice grain mustard. The potato salad was good, as was the kraut. All in all, we enjoyed brunch. This is decent scratch made stuff, albeit nothing fancy. I'll give it 3 stars, and I would try again, although nothing to clamor over.

Yelp
German food find in Portland! We walked by this unassuming store front restaurant. Dinner was so well prepared - schnitzel, sauerbraten, spaetzle, cucumber dill salad and rye bread. The service was attentive and graciously provided. We will be back and if you haven't been - GO.

Yelp
We are visiting from Boston and have been looking for some good brunch and found it here! Cute little feel good place. Makes you feel like you're at home eating a home cooked meal. Food was on point. Potato pancakes are perfect and the waffles are just to die for. My husband rarely says he loves something, and the first bite he took, he fell in love. The bacon was perfectly smoked. The cook really cares about this food. I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a good meal. We are going back in for brunch tomorrow!

Yelp
One of my favorite places anywhere. The potato pancakes are amazing. The split pea soup with ham is delicious, as are they rye bread with spread. My dinner tonight. I love the sides. The German Potato Salad, cucumber salad (mom food from a friend), roasted beets... The plates are also very good but it's all about the potato pancakes, soup and bread for me. I miss Portland, Maine now that I live in Ansonia, Connecticut.

Yelp
You know, this place is delicious and super consistent. It's just down the block from my place and they sneakily have one of the best Sunday breakfast/brunch/lunches in town. The Belgian waffle(w/ blueberry maple syrup), German home fries and twice smoked bacon make a great start to any Sunday. Give it a try, the people there are nice and clean.

Yelp
Skip the brunch here. Not really much going on other than the delicious potato pancakes. Everything else is just plain average at best. Side sausage, the bratwurst, potato salad and even the coffee was meh !!!

Yelp
Schulte & Herr is different than most German American restaurants simply because it doesn't serve alcohol. It's a BYOB and it's nice to take some of the focus away from beer and towards German cuisine. My wife said that the bread took her back to her year in Germany when she had pretty much this recipe every afternoon. The basics (which, for me, are potato pancakes and red cabbage) are also done very well, but I'll remember this place for the sauerbraten falling apart in my fork. I love meat that has been slow cooked to tenderness.

Yelp
Visited yesterday for the first time. The owners are on site involved in the entire process including cooking and serving delightful, authentic, German food. We were lucky enough to hear conversations auf deutsch during the visit. I will return again, and again. Auf wiedersehen. Schöne Wochenende.

Yelp
I am a brunch menu hater. Want real food on Sunday at noon. Period. Having said that - this is a cute neighborhood place. Few tables. Many sophisticated people eating. Lots of discussions about best overseas travel deals. The omelet was excellent. The salad is fresh but no discernible dressing. The cucumber dill salad salad is perfect. The roast was very old world and luscious. The bread is wonderful. They served rye with split peas soup. The rye bread was a major hit. Ahhhhh. The bacon is to die for. I was brought up on hand made hickory smoked bacon. This was nearly there.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem in Portland. It was my first time having German food and I was pleasantly surprised at how savory the food was and at the food presentation. We had the zweibelkuchen- caramelized onion and gruyere tart with arugula for an appetizer. The tart was light and flaky with the perfect combination of cheese and onions, while the arugula and radish made it a perfect start to our wonderful meal. My fiancé and two friends got the roasted bratwurst with potato bacon salad, kielbasa, ham, and sauerkraut, but also had the option to substitute the sauerkraut with sautéed veggies. The looks on their faces showed pure bliss and the aroma from their plates made my mouth water. If I ate land meat, I would have ordered that as well. I ended up enjoying the fish goulash which had an Italian feel to it because it had mussels with a light fish, fresh vegetables and potatoes all in a tomato base. Although we were thoroughly satisfied after the entree we were curious enough to ask for dessert. The meal was delicious, so the dessert must be too! We tried the chocolate cake with raspberry jam and whipped cream. It was AMAZING! A perfect way to end your meal and our wine. Oh yeah, the best part... it is BYOB. No limitation on select beers or wines. Bring your favorites with you! The one downfall is that I did not see a restroom. So just make sure you use the restroom and wash your hands at home before coming to this place. Otherwise, it is worth an evening out!

Yelp
A hidden gem that was recommended to me. BYOB, but I did not. The two dinners my partner and I had were fantastic. Next time I will go for brunch.

Yelp
I would never think to describe german food as "light," and yet, that's exactly what the potato pancakes with lox here was. Delicate, while still an ample portion. Crisp pancakes and lots of capers. The service was attentive without feeling rushed, and we were seated right away while the dining room also remained just-the-right amount of full. I can't imagine a restaurant can plan that sort of thing, but if so, kudos. I was dying to order "The Roast" because I love potato dumplings that much, but it was just too early in the day to commit to what I imagine is a very meat-heavy meal, I shall simply have to return.

Yelp
Fabulous food, wonderful staff. Everything genuine. You must eat here. Yelp said this review is too short so I'm writing an extra, unnecessary sentence to meet their requirements.

Yelp
We stopped in here on a Saturday for lunch. The place is small, with a sort of eclectic decor that I didn't care for but my partner did. I ordered the bratwurst, which came with potato salad and sauerkraut. The bratwurst was delicious, the sauerkraut on the sweeter side which I like, but I've resigned myself to the fact that vinegar-based potato salads are just not my thing. My partner got the potato pancakes which were cooked fritter-style (I forget the specific German word he used, which the waitress understood) and were delightfully crisp outside and tender inside. The waitress spoke to him in German, which was a nice treat. Overall, a really nice place to eat good, authentic German food.

Yelp
This place is so new that I had to "add a business" in order to write a review, but I'm really glad my boyfriend and I stumbled upon this newcomer on Cumberland Ave. Firstly, the space itself is quite charming: it's cozy, with around 10 tables, nice light, cute ceramic sugar holders, and what I can only assume is cheerful German music playing. The service is friendly and attentive. I'd never had German food before, and I was expecting... I don't know. Something heavy and fried? But the food at Schulte & Herr managed to satiate me without making me feel like I needed a nap immediately after eating. I had the potato pancakes, which I highly recommend, although they were a bit underseasoned for my taste. They came with super fresh lox, capers, pickles, crisp radishes, and some sort of tasty sauce. The result was a nice mix of flavors and textures. My mouth is watering just thinking of it now. My companion had the waffles, which came with blackberries. I'm not the biggest fan of sweet breakfast food, but I still really enjoyed the bite I stole from him. We both had coffee, and the total came to a reasonably-priced $20. I would happily return to Schulte & Herr for it's unpretentious food done right. The only downside (which may be an upside, depending on how much pleasure you derive from people-watching) is that the location is a bit chaotic.

Yelp
THANK YOU YELP for helping me to stumble upon the BEST brunch of my entire life! Amazing service, quaint restaurant, friendly customers, and food so good it will have me driving back from Boston on a regular basis! I had a pork schnitzel that was topped with a fried egg, capers, and anchovies with German breakfast potatoes while my friend had the best Belgian waffle known to man (and I do love my waffles)! The schnitzel was tender and flavorful - pairing it with the egg/caper/anchovies was just brilliant! The waffle had a homemade blueberry sauce of some kind that must have come straight from the heavens. The coffee was flavorful and robust, and to top it all off the homemade vanilla yogurt with spiced plums and cookie were so good we fought over who got to lick the bowl clean! The yogurt was sweet and smooth while the spiced plums were the perfect accent to the dish, it was simply amazing! If you are in Portland, anywhere near Portland, or just want to experience some amazing, authentic, German food (and brunch), this place is a MUST STOP, you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
I'm a total glutton and expect the usual enormous portions. But I left so contently and pleasantly full that I forgot what it's like to eat normal rations of food. *drops head in shame* I realized there is nothing wrong with not leaving so disgustingly full that my jeans are screaming in agony. The food was just the right mix of light and filling and salty and sour. My family moved here from Ukraine when I was four, now I know that not all European food is alike, but there was definitely a similarity to S&H and my grandmother's kitchen. I loved the food! Maybe I'm bias because I get to eat similar dishes on a frequent basis, but that should be all the more reason to listen to me and GO.TO.Shulte&Herr. We both ordered the potato pancakes with lox, a side of home-fries, and a side of sausage. Everything definitely emanated 'home-cooked' and was comforting and appetizing. The potato pancakes come in three's, they were about the size of my palm and nestled around them were delicate slices of salmon. Little chopped pickles, radish, and capers accompanied the plate, and a ramekin of what tasted like a sour-cream/horseradish concoction is what you smother the pancakes in. My only frown about S&H is the location (you get a majestic view of a rusty parking garage) and the decor (which is kind of awkward and old). The food makes it worth it though, I promise!
