Schwarzes Café - Review - Charlottenburg - Berlin - The Infatuation

"Schwarzes Café is a Berlin institution synonymous with the glamorous West. It draws an eclectic crowd now, as it did in the '80s when David Bowie and Iggy Pop were regulars. You’ll have to wait to be seated and might even be turned away on a Friday or Saturday night, but this is Berlin—were you even here if you weren’t rejected from somewhere? Once you’re through the neon parrot entrance, head up the staircase and grab a table on the first floor with a dominating disco ball, ornate ceiling, and small balcony that smokers squeeze onto. After decades of famously being a 24-hour spot, the kitchen remains open around the clock on weekends, making the place feel like a time vortex where you can order scrambled eggs at midnight and schnitzel at 10am. It’s cash only, so make sure you bring enough for a few rounds of Gin Basil Smashes and a late-night breakfast." - Olivia Ladanyi

Schwarzes Café – Berlin, Germany - Gastro Obscura

"When David Bowie left Los Angeles for a small flat in West Berlin in the late 1970s, he quickly became something of a fixture in the city’s nightlife scene. “For many years Berlin had appealed to me as a sort of sanctuary-like situation,” he would later say. “It was one of the few cities where I could move around in virtual anonymity.” According to locals, the musician could often be spotted at Chez Romy Haag, the eponymous cabernet that belonged to a legendary trans performer and nightlife impresario, or grabbing a steak with Iggy Pop below the neon sign of Paris Cafe. Schwarzes Café opened its doors in 1978, toward the tail-end of the Thin White Duke’s Berlin years. It quickly became one of his regular haunts. The restaurant was the work of a radical socialist collective, which opened it in the wake of the Tunix Congress, a left-wing gathering at the Technische Universität (TU). It quickly became an after-hours hub, thanks to one particular feature: with the exception of a brief window in the wee hours of Tuesday mornings for cleaning, it never closed. Decades later, Schwarzes Café still feels almost defiantly incongruous with its surroundings on bourgeois Kantstrasse. A rainbow-hued parrot sign glows in the window of the building’s mustard-hued, baroque facade. Regulars inevitably can be seen smoking from the balcony and spilling out from the umbrella-covered tables on the street. The interior, decked out in peeling plaster molding with an enormous disco ball, has the magnificently dilapidated air of an artist’s squat. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Schwarzes Café reduced its hours somewhat, making this no longer a true 24/7 hangout. Nevertheless, the owners pour whiskey sours long after the other bars in the neighborhood have fallen silent, followed by coffee and eggs a few hours later when the sun comes up. Know Before You Go These days, Schwarzes Café closes at 2 a.m. each morning." - Diana Hubbell

Food here is great. Have English menu. The portion is big too. Highly recommend. It’s 24/7. Came in the morning around 730am

Google
I went in as a customer and came out as a fan of this place! My group and I had breakfast, and to our surprise, every single dish was absolutely delicious. The portions were also quite generous, making it a truly satisfying meal. The ambience has a slightly old and rustic charm, giving off a classic old Berlin vibe. Moreover, the staff were very friendly, though the service was a bit slow. However, it was well worth the wait for such a great meal. ⚠️ They only accept cash for payment, which can be a bit inconvenient.

Google
Ended a wonderful evening here with some exceptional company. I've not been many places where you can enjoy red wine and delicious cheesecake at 2am in the morning, it was very memorable for sure. Food, service and atmosphere all top notch, a lovely place to spend time and definitely recommended as part of a trip to Berlin!

Google
Amazing food and open till VERY late, had good beers and the pasta with shrimp was amazing , didn’t expect it to be hot and was perfectly balanced. Definitely a must and became one of my favorite places in Berlin. Will come back definitely. Don’t miss this place! Just No card pay, bring cash ;)

Google
The place is excellent, and of course famous for being a go to spot for David Bowie. The service is very German and a bit abrupt without being unfriendly

Google
Got such a lovely and fun service despite visiting with three preschool aged hungry kids. Our five year old wanted Kaiserschmarrn, so the waiter took him to the kitchen to order it directly from the chef, which he did and was so proud the whole day. Highly recommended!

Google
Good cafe witch has loads of options for food and drinks. The staff is very friendly and the prices are good. There are gluten free options here as well. The food itself was okay, not great but also not bad. I would definitely recommend eating in the garden at the back during sunny days since it’s al lot quieter then in the front of the restaurant next to the busy road.

Google
Nice and quiet cafe near Zoologischer Garten. It's a little pricey. The cafe is good. The hot chocolate is ok. The cakes are ok, but not extraordinary and are kinda expensive. The service is nice and the atmosphere is very calm.

Yelp
Good food for good prices. There's a big selection with the staff being very friendly. Even though they've forgotten a drink of mine, they've been absolutely neat! The only downside is the space downstairs which tends to be a little tight. - Atmosphere is great though.

Yelp
WOW! Amazingly delicious, unique food. Farmers Omelette is a great choice if you're particularly hungry. Strong, fresh coffee. Fast, friendly service. Atmosphere is relaxed. So glad we visited!

Yelp
I must say I am highly disappointed by my recent visits here. I used to come here often, but lately it's become a careless, noisy place with a complete lack of pleasant ambiance, and sadly very negligent and rude staff. Today was our anniversary and my fiancé and I decided to book a table, since this is where we had our first date years ago. Even though we had confirmation of the reservation, they had failed to hold a free table for us. They didn't seem apologetic, nor did they care. A couple was just leaving, so we asked if we could sit at that table. As we sat down, the staff said this table is reserved. There wasn't a sign of it. And they suddenly brought one and put it there. We said- maybe it's for us, since we reserved for this time? They said no. It's for somebody else. I said it's our anniversary and we specifically booked for tonight... they replied in a defensive manner, that they will try to seat us somewhere else, but we may have to wait. Ok, we thought... though there wasn't a hint it was truly reserved. (Nobody ever showed up). Minutes later, they said we could sit there after all. Not a big deal, though annoying. Then came the waitress, with a super runny nose that she was pulling up every 5 seconds! She obviously had at least a cold. She took our order, wiping her snot with her hand. Already not very inviting, we gave our orders, and waited.... And waited... 40 minutes later, after all our neighbors (that were even seated later than us) had food and drinks, we were still sitting there like at a bus station. So we asked about our order. The same waitress with the snot-nose, came over and said " would you like to order"? We pointed out that we had ordered, and she said her colleague must have lost the order. We replied that we had ordered with her... she looked at us like she had never seen us in her life, and said "it was a very stressful day". Of course I feel sorry if it's true for her, but what kind of a place let's their employees work when their nose is literally dripping on the table and they are obviously overwhelmed..!? And how is it ok to treat guests that have been here so many times & even reserved a table, without any regard or at least an apology... basically we ended up leaving and honestly, I will never support a place like this. A place, that forces sick waiters to work, and treats their guests without an ounce of respect. Additionally, it's just freaking noisy and overfilled.

Yelp
Laid back is the correct phrase to describe this cafe because don't be expecting to have a quick breakfast before going to work. This is not a diner despite being open 24 hours. The food is good but the waitress will give you all of the time in the world to peruse the menu, which is somewhat extensive for breakfast, and finish your coffee before she comes back for a refill. But that's Europe in general and with the prices, their usual customers have the luxury of time to do this. My cheese omelet was good, and the dark ambience is more fitting at night. I checked out some of the other dishes being brought out and they looked great in presentation and and portion.

Yelp
Cash only, but so delicious. If there's one thing to have, it's the farmer's omelette. Easily feeds about 3-4 people. Downed it almost by myself. It was a mix of everything delicious. Service was outstanding and warm, we felt welcome and hope to be back here someday soon.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! Is one of my favourite spots in whole Berlin. And it's open around the clock. The area is nice, just some minutes walk from the zoo station. In the Café you can sit Inside or outside in front or in the garden area. The Menu is the best. You can order everything from breakfast, lunch, dinner to cocktails, coffee or freshly baked cake. The food never disappointed me. All fresh and amazing taste:-))) Big recommendation

Yelp
My favorite café in Germany! My best friend who lives in Berlin took me here late night when I came to pay her a visit. I adore how quaint and cozy the place looks even at night. I love how they have lighted candles to give a romantic feel. When we came maybe around 10 or 11pm there were so many people here! We enjoyed hot chocolate, milkshake and we split a carrot cake! Everything was delicious! I would definitely recommend this place if you're looking for a nice café to catch up with a friend! Did I mention that this place is open 24 hours?!

Yelp
Hey, if I was a real Berliner, I would be hanging out at this cafe all the time with my black beret and my book of Proust nursing a cappuccino for hours. The fact that I came here twice within just a five-day period should tell you something about its appeal. That and the fact that it's open 24/7. But this is not the greasy spoon you would expect such an operation to be. That would be the American version of such a diner. No, it's actually a nicely appointed place with white tablecloths and candles but also with brick walls and fanciful murals. It's comfortable, and the menu is huge since they are attempting to run the gamut of all three meals. I was there for breakfast twice. The first time, I ordered the hefty and delicious Bauernomelette (8.20 Euros), the Farmer's Omelette, which actually was a three-egg Denver omelette with chunks of ham and all sorts of vegetables - zucchini, scallions, green peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes - along with a side salad of mixed greens. I notice that in Europe, they like to put their potatoes in the eggs and not on the side. (see photo). It was a surprising amount of food for hearty stock, but I had no trouble wolfing it down to start my day. I also had a creamy double cappuccino for 3.30 Euros) and a quarter-liter of Romerquelle water for 2.40 Euros. On my next visit, I tried going a bit lighter with the 7.50-Euro Casablanca Breakfast, which consisted of two large, freshly baked croissants and a fresh fruit platter with cheeses (see photos). That was just the right morning opener for me with the quantity a bit more manageable this time. Service is efficient and cordial with English not a problem with the busy waitstaff. They don't take credit cards under certain amounts. They do have a funky men's room where you can't quite tell if you stepped into the minimalist urinal or not. The cafe is located in the more tony neighborhood of Charlottenburg near the Sauvignyplatz train stop, but the clientele is more boho-friendly. FOOD - 4 stars...good, hearty breakfasts await you here SERVICE - 4 stars...very efficient, English spoken AMBIANCE - 4 stars...like a downtown loft with uptown decorating touches TOTAL - 4 stars...and it's open 24/7 so you never have to worry whether it's closed or not

Yelp
Really a great breakfast, make sure to eat in the garden. I hear it a trendy local hotspot, who knew?

Yelp
Ordered Milanesa or schnitzel with mashed potato super good fresh and big portion more on pricy side but liked it

Yelp
Minus the fact that they only take cash payments, this place is wonderful. Very laid back and relaxed, but well-run and tidy. Waiters are very observant and quick to help. The atmosphere on the upper floor is very nice: the tall ceilings are covered in decorative wood, the tables each have a warm candle, and there's a clear walkway to each table (organization is key!). Food came out quickly and was so delicious! The bathroom stalls, however, don't offer 100% privacy. Between the 2 stalls there's a heart-shaped shutter that can be opened and there's a gap between the door and frame. Made me somewhat uneasy. Atmosphere, service, and food were well-worth the price! -1 star for the strange bathroom set-up and the cash-only option to pay.

Yelp
Would recommend to folks coming in from America seeking a more "local" spot. I had the boiled eggs and potatoes - after getting off a long flight and train into West Berlin, I wanted something authentic. They delivered. Food was delicious, service was attentive, and dessert - the apple strudel - was excellent. Homemade whipped cream. Was tough to get a seat, though.

Yelp
It's a bar, it's a cafe, it's a restaurant, no... It's Schwarzes Cafe! When I found about this place, I expected to find a cafe environment (coffee and pastries). When I came in, I found much more of a bar environment. They did have an espresso machine and some cakes, but this still wasn't what I was expecting. I picked up a menu anyway. Indeed, they have breakfast options, lunch and dinner options, and caffeinated options of various sorts. Suffice it to say you can get all three meals, late night, and drinks all in the same place. I ordered a bowl of coffee, scrambled eggs with toast, and a plate of baked apple crepes. Drink coffee out of a bowl (think large cup without the handle) was cool, especially for the coffee lover I am. Milk came in a small metal decanter, and was steamed enough to make it warm and give it some foam... A lovely touch. However, the coffee itself left something to be desired, as It was not particularly strong or flavorful. Scrambled eggs were cooked absolutely perfectly, just runny enough, they did not taste like an omelet was put through a blender. My only gripe is that it had too much salt. Considering you hey salt and pepper at the table, it would have been nice if there was less, or even so salt. Crepes were pretty great. I liked how they were just in between being soft and crisp, in the Goldilocks zone. The filling of baked apples was nice, and I liked that it was a heeded apple. However, because the apples were shredded, the cinnamon and sugar overwhelmed the apples. Ice cream and whipped cream was a nice addition. Fruit was a good addition too, however, there were several minor imperfections here. First, the strawberry was cut in half, but the stem not removed. Ordinarily, if the strawberry was whole, I would not mention this... However, seeing as though it was already cut they could've removed the stem. Second, the grapes were not seedless, just a little unexpected to have to spit out seeds during a meal, and it is awkward if you are with a group that isn't family. Location was designed to look a little aged, but is clean. However, the men's WC is not the nicest place in the world. Service was nice, and relatively quick - although I felt it could be a tad quicker considering there were not many people in here at the time

Yelp
Well this place is opened 24/7 No wifi but it is a very cozy place Service is pretty good. Servers are very friendly I got muesli which looks super cute and tastes decent. Price tag is just average In short, average place in Berlin but with no wifi :(

Yelp
Nice place, very big selection of dishes. Pastas, veal schnitzel, home made cakes, salads and drinks. Great atmosphere and sercice. They also have things for veggies.
google avatar

Ramona W.

Yelp
This is a very cute looking cafe! My hubby and I had the gnocchi and a super yummy desert called Kaiserschmarrn. The desert was the highlight of the evening! It's big enough for two, or one can have it as a meal! My kid had the chocolate shake which he didn't enjoy much, but we did The service was great even if the place was packed (see the attached pic of the dessert).
google avatar

Jane K.

Yelp
Egg-selent breakfast joint in Berlin! The fried eggs are impeccably well done (just the right amount of runny yolk to dab my egg whites into) and the farmer's omelette is savory and fresh. I also ordered the yogurt with fruit and got a heaping serving that more than met my daily requirement. Coffees here are served in bowls (interesting). The place looks like it's survived the wars, but in a romantic/nostalgic way (as opposed to a decrepit, dirty way). Peeked at a few other dessert items that sounded tasty but was too full to sample. Try some for me!

Yelp
When I go to Berlin, I'm walking A LOT around town. It's easy to get hungry any time of the day. And when you're looking for something that ISN'T pork and potatoes, you run out of options really fast. Shwarzes is that island of food paradise. The food quality is excellent. American style breakfasts are served all day there, so you can get your eggs and bacon at your leisure. The pastries are the most authentic and delicious that you can find anywhere else in the city. The apple strudel was to die for. You can also get other heaver dishes that are incredibly prepared and presented. Service can be a little slow, but it's totally worth it for the food. HIGHLY recommend this place.
google avatar

Andy D.

Yelp
24/7!!! One of the only place in town that doesn't close early. Breakfast and dinner all day and service was amazing ! Ordered salmon breakfast for 2 and ate it all!! They were all wonderful there including the front desk and the chefs.
google avatar

Yelp
It's delightfully shabby. The exterior suggest a humble little coffee shop, then as you enter you begin to see it unfold around you. Then as you continue you begin to notice the faded ornate decor and you realise it's as though you've stepped back in time, which would at least explain the tardis like nature of the place. The staff are all proficient English speakers and they have copies of the menu in at least German and English. I felt suitable chastened when I was told I should of asked for an English menu rather than struggle with my limited German. We both ordered eggs, with my pigeon German and Scottish accent it's best to keep it simple. I went for the ham and fried eggs while Gill went for scrambled. We both had tea to accompany and I also guzzled a chocolate milkshake. I loved the place, even if I never ordered the most taxing or spectacular things on the menu. The large fruit juices look delicious and the the breakfast fruit salads are stacked with fresh fruit. Had I more time in Berlin I'd have returned with a bigger appetite and a little more confidence.

Yelp
In the middle of Charlottenburg's upper class design and photography mecca, across the Stilwerk, lays Schwarze Café like a happy stray dog. Since 1978 has the all-in-one restaurant / cafe / bar attracted people of all parts of society to sit together over cocktails and Käsefrühstück. Follow the neon parrot sign any hour of day and night to enter an oasis of shabby chic, with golden ceiling, stucco, dark furniture and contemporary paintings on the wall. The service is sweet in a Berlin way. Don't be surprised if your "salad with egg" gets delivered in two - a salad and a cooked egg on the side. However, just laugh about it and joke with the waiter. A BIG PLUS are the various glutenfree pasta dishes! Prices are above average for Berlin and low for Charlottenburg. Highest chance to meet Berlin's celebrities of Savignyplatz are somewhere around 5am.
google avatar

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Open and spacious. And the food is priceable and good. A really nice place to enjoy a long lunch.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
This place has its ups and downs. The ups: -Open 24 hours -Large menu, featuring breakfast items 24 hours too, even though it's only eggs and bread -cool atmosphere, nice old building The downs: -Poor service -Food isn't amazing, but good enough This place is definitely something to go check out. Hardly anything is open 24 hours in Berlin and the architecture/details in this place are super cool.
google avatar

Rolf N.

Yelp
Very friendly staff in an original environment gives you a very good experience. Fresh ingredients are used and nicely prepared. Special Wishes and needs are accommodated and served with a nice smile

Yelp
Open 24/7. Perfect for delicious food, after leaving the club at 6am. I loved the Kaiserschmarrn, which I shared with my dancing buddy. We were stuffed & happy with the warm, decadent dessert...side of ice team & vanilla sauce, cherries. Nice warm unpretentious atmosphere... My new go-to spot, for late or early morning eats... After pulling an all-nighter. Friendly Service, to boot. 2 thumbs up!

Yelp
I knew I made a gigantic mistake when I said hello to my tinder date. I suppose I could judge this place negatively since it's where my date excitedly brought me (and I also think the area is a little touristy, a little weird, but what do I, a foreigner, know about Berlin?) but I will just say this - you can smoke on the balcony, and the drinks are strong. The staff are lovely. I'll come here with someone else so I can associate a pleasurable time with this venue. It's too nice to let it die with a repressed memory.
google avatar

June K.

Yelp
It's okay for a drink when you are close by but usually filled with tourists who had been at primark. I usually drop by after a vernissage from my university or when I had dinner in Kantstraße. The staff is nice and I like the casual atmosphere.

Manosith L.

Yelp
It is quite a good place for a start of day. They service was good and the presentation was top notch. To be recommended.

Yelp
Love this place! open 24 hours! 365 days! it's like a friend who never leaves you alone, always great atmosphere, a must while you are in the city .

Yelp
The worst service ever! I took my friends to the café because once I had a great time there. But, things changed! We had the worst service ever. We got the wrong beer start from the beginning and wrong orders were coming all over again. We realized that at the end there must be something wrong at the bill, because it was just too chaotic. We were a group of 6 people. And we were definitely right when the bill came. There are some mistakes. That's not a problem. The problem is when we ask to the waiter, she was rude and even wanted to call the police if wouldn't pay, instead of make correction and apologize! At the end, it is not about the money but the attitude. Such a bad experience and will never come back again.

Yelp
Schwarzes Café is open 24 hours. I'll give them a star for that, but the food and service is below mediocre. I've been here a couple of times and have preferred to sit in the back. The outside and top levels are always busy with patrons. During the times I've visited, the back room is hardly crowded; it has more of an intimate vibe. FOOD & DRINKS On each occasion, I've ordered their teas. They may not be as aromatic or flavorful like teas I've had at other cafes in Berlin, but they do the trick of soothing a sore throat if you're nursing a cold. Food isn't the best. I once ordered a chocolate cake that was wading in a puddle of some kind of boozed-up berry sauce. Not only did it not taste good, but it was dry, which probably explained the amount of sauce I received. SERVICE Pretentious and slow, but that's not uncommon when dining out in Berlin. Though, I prefer slow service over pretentiousness. OTHER Sometimes, they'll play hip hop music. Being an American, listening to and singing along to Snoop Dogg and Tupac tracks always makes me happy and long for the Westside. +1 Star for that. OVERALL Not a place I'd suggest dropping in for food, drinks, and atmosphere. Even though it's open 24 hours and they play good music on occasion, you're better off staying at home or waiting til the next day to visit another café.
google avatar

Kaylee A.

Yelp
The good: -Open 24 hours -Gluten-free pasta, that's not half bad (what are the chances?) -Good cocktails -(less than 5 minutes from my house) The bad: -No wifi?? -I waited outside for service after going inside and asking for outside service for 47 minutes. Then, once I ordered - the food came very quickly and then I waited another 39 minutes to get my check. -There are always drunk obnoxious people outside starting at approximately 9pm - There are very few people who go here alone, so it's mostly groups of friends or drunk people

Yelp
Weird having breakfast in a club-like room. The food itself was just OK, standard breakfast fare similar to what you'll get at a hotel buffet breakfast.

Yelp
Very nice cafe serving great breakfasts. We shared a ham and a cheese plate. Very filling, nice coffee. Very nice outside garden hidden at the back. Recommended

Yelp
Wow, seriously the best omelette I've ever had! They were amazing and perfect for a n early morning late night meal. This place is really cool it's perfect for late night food that is delicious! They have a great menu, you can have breakfast lunch or dinner any time of the day. Thank you for a great meal!

Yelp
I visited this cafe on Sunday with my family. The dark candle-lit interior gives off a nice relaxing atmosphere. This is a cafe has a mixed clientele which may, or may not appeal to everyone. The service is excellent - nice friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome. However, my choice on the menu was a disappointment. I ordered the carrot and orange soup which could have been really nice if not so sweet. Naturally carrots alone are sweet, so the soup should be balanced out with neutralising ingredients and not just simply a taste of carrots. I also ordered a Quiche which is one of my favourite dishes. The base, which should be a nice light shortcrust pastry, was just a soggy mess. Obviously the quiche had been microwaved for a considerable length of time for it to get into a state like that. The rest of my family were lucky enough to have had very nice pasta dishes. It seemes to me that the cafe has far too many dishes to be able to cope with. If they had less on the menu, perhaps cut it down by half, they would have more time to produce nicer meals.

Yelp
Went here four times in the space of a week as myself and my SO were staying nearby and it was wonderful each time! We mainly sampled their breakfast offerings, which were all great; soft buttery scrambled eggs with ham, feta and tomato, fresh herbs, fresh yummy croissant, platters with fresh fruit and their cappuccinos- creamy and wonderful. If I lived nearby, I would definitely be a regular! Service was relaxed, friendly and wonderful. Every server we encountered in there was helpful. Even with our smattering of bad German they were obliging and never standoffish! The price is good too, for under 10 euro breakfast will set you up for the whole day. If you need a reliable stop for good hearty food in a relaxing atmosphere (in the mornings anyway - as it's a 24/7 cafe I've heard that it's a go to spot for late night nibbles) then it's a safe bet. Next time I'm in Berlin I'll definitely be making a return visit!

Yelp
Great 24 hour cafe in Charlottenburg, and finding a 24 hour dining spot that is not Dönerkebab is sometimes a challenge even in Berlin (But they are closed at some point on tuesdays if i remember correctly.). Large enough with both upstairs, downstairs, as well as a small patio great in summer and spring time. Food is good and I swear they have some high octane coffee that was the equivalent to doing speed....or someone dosed me. The bathrooms are interesting too..almost loungey in that respect. Nice staff every-time i have been there. as in they are attentive and not dismissive as much as most German type cafe's. The only reason I did not go there as often as I would have liked is because i lived in Pankow and sometimes got too comfortable in my little world there. The only thing that keeps it from getting totally 5 stars is that sometimes there are too many expats.

Just came in for some cake and was not disappointed. The carrot cake was almost perfectly- German (I love how the sugar in German carrot cake is not overwhelming, and often sweetened with fruit). The chocolate cake was moist and decadent. We even got to meet the sweet Mama who bakes all the baked goods- a true gem.

Yelp
Nice enough cafe but not revolutionary. Despite the Russian influenced decor it's quite cozy and has a spacious back room. The staff are friendly. Had an aroma breakfast (bread, jam and grapefruit). The grapefruit hit the spot while the rolls were just ok. The cheese was probably from aldi or some supermarket but the jam seemed homemade. From the French breakfast, the croissant was also ordinary. To give them credit, they do a good presentation and coffee. Probably won't be back given all the nice cafes in berlin.

Yelp
The food here is pretty good. Not the best breakfast in Berlin, but I was not disappointed either. The interior was pretty worn and could use a bit of updating. The big selling point are the hours. There are not many places in Berlin that are open for an early breakfast - particularly on a Sunday.

Yelp
Best hot chocolate ever!!! Drank the first one bottom up in 30 seconds and immediately wanted a second one! Didn't order food but it smells good. Will come back if I'm around this area.

Yelp
Small, authentic café with a large menu from breakfast to dinner. Good for breakfast but can get crowded.

Yelp
Another landmark in western Berlin. Always open, a lot of space, famous cake and other specialities for eating and drinking. Do not miss washing hands before leaving - due to the extravagant bathrooms. Additional to the second floor you find a garden for summertimes.

Yelp
Slow service, took 20 minutes to get a menu and another 15 to be served. But food was very good and fresh!

Yelp
An interesting and amazing place. Dark walls, good music, nice people (forever young ;)) Positiv: open 24/7 (except Tue morning), fancy wash rooms, music. Breakfast at 8 p.m. negativ: smoking only in sommer, in the hidden garden on the backside.

Yelp
Of the three cafes I visited for breakfast this past long weekend in Berlin, this was the most interesting AFTER the initial visual let-down. It was an astonishingly hot weekend, so we only wanted to eat outside. Inside was like a really cluttered hot yoga class. The outdoor seating is just ok, but the service and food make up for the lack of visual charm for the location. The waiter was extremely helpful, evening insisting that we move to a more spacious table that could have sat four even though we were only two people. The food is visually lovely and the assortment nice. Nothing truly exceptional, but I would go back with visitors. For my own daily breakfast, I would choose one of the nearby larger cafes that aren't as personable but are about 1/2 the price.

Yelp
This place is pretty fantastic. I stayed in Berlin 2 years ago with my girlfriend. Due to jetlag and late nights out, we often ended up at at this place at 5am for a snack or a drink, and the place gave off a very dream-like mood that is hard to explain. I came back a year later with some other friends around dinner time and it was totally different -- packed and lively. I might be a little clouded by sentimentality, but this is one of my favorite diner/cafes I've been to just because of the ambiance and mood it inspires. The food was decent, but nothing to write home about.
