When I'm at Scissortail, I can see the future. A time very soon, when we are all out and about, masked but not paranoid, careful but not OCD. When we know our kids can't get our parents sick, and we're not worried about spritzing their hands with sanitizer every few minutes.
There's a bright golden haze on the meadow, public art and installations abound, and life feels a little bit less like a dystopian novel, and more like the life we all imagined when this park 70-acre, $132 million park opened with a rock concert to a crowd of 28,000.
We tracked down the Planters Peanut mobile a few weeks ago in Bricktown, and then took the streetcar to Scissortail. We have been so careful, but it was the beginning of "Spring Break" (or whatever the equivalent is when your kids have been in school for 10 days since November lol). We decided to hit up the park via the streetcar, and it was such a great experience.
We loved the children's area, even on a cold-ish and windy-ish day. And even though we spent a long time there, it felt as if we barely scratched the surface of this amazing park. The kids had a great time on the playground equipment, and we had fun watching them wear themselves out.
I can't wait until I'm fully vaccinated in a few weeks. I plan to enjoy all this park has to offer, from the Farmers Market to the Night Market, and from the walking trails to concerts and food trucks.
I'm so glad we have this here, and this is another place where I can imagine the future of the city. I can't wait to see how much prettier it will get over the course of my lifetime as the trees get bigger and all the native plants really take hold.
