Best Ice Cream and Frozen Desserts in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Tailored to kids, Scoop and Joy rotates through more than 50 flavors, so there’s always something new and exciting to try. The shop offers the usual staples, plus flavors like horchata cajeta, honeysuckle rose, and yam pecan. A variety of cones — including the likes of M&M, pretzel, and pink vanilla — add flair. Many visitors request for their ice cream to be augmented with marshmallows, cherries, chocolate chips, and other toppings so that they resemble cure animal faces. Unsurprisingly, it’s a popular spot for the little ones." - Chris Malloy

Super cute establishment! Upon arrival there was a long line, but it moved surprisingly fast. I did notice there was only one employee working, and she did an amazing job handling the crowd all on her own, efficient, friendly, and calm under pressure. It was our family’s first visit, and we were impressed by the wide variety of flavor options. Unfortunately, they were out of waffle cones, which was a bit disappointing since that’s our go-to, but the ice cream itself was absolutely delicious and made up for it. Thankfully, the weather was beautiful, so we were able to sit outside and enjoy our treats. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
We've had ice cream from Scoop and Joy a couple of years ago while visiting from California. It was SO good that we decided to find it and enjoy it again. We were not disappointed! The ice cream is the best and servings are generous. The owner is delightful. She engaged with each customer personally. Interestingly, we all had familiar insights and experiences. We were told ownership would be changing soon but the new owner would keep the joy! We'll be back!

Google
We love this ice cream shop! We go as a family, or sometimes just in a small group, and every time we enjoy a wonderful experience. Adorable shop, yummy ice cream, and friendly staff!

Google
Oh my gosh, this place is SO good! We had the fresh peach ice cream and the Tennessee toffee ice cram. Both were delicious. The have several different types of cones to choose from, or you can just get a cup. If they ask you if you want a surprise, JUST SAY YES!!!!

Google
Clean and very friendly staff. There's just a couple seatings inside. They had a ganache chocolate log, so very good! Dole whip was also delicious. I'm glad I stopped by for those two items. The smooties were okay, and i wouldn't recommend the boba tea.

Google
This is a fun and delicious ice cream shop for the whole family. Locally owned, they're known for their huge selection of rotating flavors and cute faces they add to each scoop. The kids loved the faces on their ice cream. They have many types of cones and cups, too. Excellent service to boot.

This was the first time I visited and the many ice cream flavors were so wonderful. They served so many different options for sundaes, smoothies, Boba, ice cream, and even some Dole Whip plus more. DJ was amazing!!! He served and got the ice cream ready. Did it with a HUGE SMILE. Even though we had a large party, he never showed he was overwhelmed one bit. I highly recommend going to go see DJ. They even serve the ice cream with a "Surprise".

Google
“1,000 stars” is what my six-year-old daughter said she’d rate Scoop and Joy. It’s such a fun ice cream shop! They have lots of flavors of ice cream and lots of unique cones like pretzel cones, chocolate chip cones, and more. When you order, the staff ask if you want the “surprise.” Say yes. They will create an animal or face from candy like little cookies, M&Ms, and more. My daughter got such a kick out of it!

Yelp
If there's one thing you do, get the carrot cake Ice cream here. Oh my god. Maybe the best tasting ice cream flavor I've ever had. Here for vacation and now we feel like we need to go back and try the banana pudding flavor bc if it's anything like the carrot cake one then I may never leave scoop and joy We got one scoop in cups and the serving was massive. My kids loved the cute little faces they made, too!

Yelp
Originally we were looking for tasty baked goods. Their website boasted banana bread, cupcakes, brownies, cookies and cake slices! I understand that in the evening stock would be low but not wiped out. :( I thought, since we drove all the way to this quaint shoppe we may as well try ice cream instead. I went with a scoop of the "Bear Claw" ice cream for $4.63 in a cake cone .80. It had a unique combination of crunchy cashews and swirls of caramel in a rich dark chocolate ice cream. It wasn't the "Bear claw" Danish pastry but it was good!! TIP: if the servers ask if you want a surprise, say YES! You'll get a bonus "face" on your treat! Mine was made with marshmallows, chocolate chips, cereal and cookie pieces. I thought it was playful and fun!
google avatar

Patti T.

Yelp
Really good ice cream flavors!! If they ask if they can make you a surprise be sure to say yes!!! I won't spoil your surprise by telling you what they do. I had the amaretto black cherry! Sooooo good.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute ice cream shop with a variety of ice creams. We tried the pistachio, coffee, coconut and this turtle ice cream and it was the winner.

Yelp
This is not your typical run of the mill ice cream shop. They sell more than just ice cream and milkshakes. They also sell dole whip, smoothies, coffee, and boba beverages, alongside a small selection of baked goods. For their ice cream flavors, they offer a good selection of classic and unique flavors ranging from not too sweet to tooth achingly sweet. On this visit, we decided to get a small cup of raspberry rendezvous ice cream and a cup of the classic pineapple dole whip. Both were enjoyable and fulfilled our sweet tooth craving. The service was fast and efficient. They had plenty of seating options both indoors and outdoors. Overall, not bad for a quaint little ice cream shop!

Yelp
Some of the best hand dipped ice cream I've had. apparently sourced from Michigan Hudsonville Ice Cream. The owner happened to be working and was very friendly and made the experience even better. We stopped by after a cubs spring training game. it was a quick 3 min drive from the highway and well worth it! highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
Best ice cream shop. Our kids loved the little characters the ice cream is decorated with. The ice cream was some of the best we've had. They have a great variety of flavors. Cones too, including Oreo crusted, lavender cones, birthday cake. Will have to try the baked goods. And the owner was the best part, very friendly. We'll be back!

Lori K.

Yelp
I am an ice cream connoisseur and this place is a hidden gem! The ice cream is so rich and flavorful, and the cute little surprise they add on is adorable! The Michigan Pot holes is death by chocolate. I love it! Service is great and the store is adorable.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly service and lots of flavors. They have ice cream cakes too! We had the cookie skillet which was okay. Cookie could have been softer.
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy, decadent and beautifully presented ice cream! Friendly service and gorgeous atmosphere. What else can you ask for?

Yelp
Very nice customer service and the ice cream was very good and the female worker is very nice to everyone and I had a good time coming here!!!! The place is very clean!

Yelp
This is a cute little intimate ice cream shop. They have a lot of different flavors. After tasting them all we got 3 scoops of one of the coconut, peanut butter, and one of the coffee-based creations. The two girls working there are friendly and nice. They also make the scoops into a "surprise" which is a little creation they do with different toppings. I would visit again.

Yelp
Tl;dr one of the best ice creams in the Valley. Really inspiring flavors and super friendly to boot. I'm gonna be honest, the first time I had it wasn't sure what to think, remember the macapuno being solid. But after having had much more ice cream around the US, these guys are up there. A wide variety of flavors but also some more adventurous ones, a lot with an Asian palate. When I saw them years ago they did just ice cream, milk shakes, the like. Now they got baked goods like cakes, boba tea, hell they even got Dole Whip! Literally something for every palate, and with plenty of vegan options likely every diet too. Some of my faves include the Lemon Creamsicle and the Cookie Monster. This lot is packed but really fun for the whole family - if they ask if you want a surprise and you have kids, say yes!

Yelp
I came across this place by mistake but let me tell you. I am so happy I did. It's probably the BEST ICE CREAM place in Phoenix! And trust me I've been to all the "top" rated ice cream places around. This place should not be missed. You have to try it. Service is amazing too and when they ask you if you want a free surprise? Say YES! They come up with very creative way of presenting their ice creams. I got the Cookie Monster, pistachio and strawberry and none of them disappointed. 10/10 across the board.
google avatar

Billie K.

Yelp
I am so glad we tried this place! Our ice cream was incredibly creamy and tasted very fresh. The waffle cones were very tasty, too! If they ask would you like a surprise... Always say, "yes!" They turn your ice cream into a fun character. The staff was very nice and helpful. Everything was very clean. I noticed as we left the table outside they immediately came and sanitized it. Prices were reasonable. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
What a treat! I made the 25 minute drive the other day after a family member recommended the princess cake ice cream and oh my.... I see myself doing that quite often. It was so delicious and unique, plus the different flavor cones?? I'm hooked!

Yelp
I drove 16 minutes to try this shop out. I ordered a vanilla ice cream sundae with Strawberry sauce, walnuts and whipped cream. The server was super nice and outgoing. I loved that he layered my sundae with the ingredients so it's evenly dispersed. I gave it four stars instead of five because they used an artificial strawberry syrup instead of fresh strawberries sauce. I was disappointed about that. Other than that the sundae was delicious. They had great other flavors and baked goods. I also tried the cheesecake pumpkin muffin, ricotta cake and banana walnut bread. All very delicious and moist. Now if only management would invest a little more and serve a good quality pure strawberries and sauce then this place would be perfect!

Yelp
A Sweet Treat and a Warm Heart - The Best Ice Cream Place in Town! I recently had the pleasure of visiting scoops and joy. We came in from Long Island ny , and I was blown away by not only the creamy, dreamy flavors but also the kindness of the owner. From the moment we walked in, the owner greeted us with a warm smile and made us feel like a regular. Her enthusiasm for her craft is contagious, and her passion for creating the perfect scoop is evident in every bite. The ice cream itself is a masterpiece - rich, creamy, and bursting with flavor. We had the key lime pie, apple which was low sugar , banana pudding in a pretzel cone and chocolate dipped they were absolute perfection. But what truly sets scoops and joy apart is the owners kindness and dedication to her customers, she also creates each ice cream cone into a surprise. She takes the time to get to know each person who walks through her door, remembers their favorite flavors, and even offers samples with a smile

Yelp
Lappert's ice-cream! I first had this brand of ice-cream in Palm Springs where you see lots of advertisements for their Disneyland Dole whip. This location has the ice cream and the dole whip. My favorite flavor is their Date Casablanca, it is so good! I don't even like dates but in the ice cream it tastes like some kind of delicious caramel cookie crumble. What is unique to this location is they always ask you if you want a surprise. This will be some kind of animal face creation on top of your ice cream. The ingredients they use for this include marshmallows, nilla wafer cookies, and chocolate chips. To complete the experience get the Date Casablanca in a wafer cone, its the perfect combination. A very popular location the staff is quick, friendly and efficient. Come for the scoop, leave with joy.

Yelp
After enjoying a healthy Mediterranean lunch our tots were craving ice cream! I always wanted to take them to a place that makes over the top dessert masterpieces loaded with goodies. Unfortunately with our allergies we cannot enjoy. They offer 300 rotating flavors. What I felt was so thoughtful is how the gal allowed our girls to choose their own flavors 2 scoops each in a cup and then she proceeded to create an adorable animal character for each of our girls with the toppings they were able to eat. I appreciated that so much and our girl even more!!! The little things like cute ice cream faces go a long way especially with younger ones growing up! I wish we were closer! We will be stopping here when we are back in the area for sure. They haven't stopped talking about it!

Yelp
I have now downgraded it to one star on account of the nasty response. To the owner-I reserve this alias for negative reviews. I have all positive reviews under another ID. You can state all you want about the problem not being you. Denial is classic. Frankly I don't care whether you fix what I see as a problem. Your loss not mine since I do not plan to ever visit your store ever again. And if it was you that served me - you need to get a personality and learn to better greet your customers. I note that you did not address the complaint because you know you do not have a leg to stand on. Poor attitude while serving - not addressed in your response Reaching for the smallest size cup for a 2 scoop order. Why? Not addressed in your response The deflection to my other negative reviews which are all grouped under one ID is not an answer. Filling it at most to the top of the cup, so it's not like you chose the smallest cup and then piled the ice cream high. From the start to finish it was an awful miserable experience. Deflect all you want, it won't increase business. Based on my experience I'm not surprised that there were NO other customers in your store when I visited

Yelp
Who doesn't love a scoop of ice cream? I stopped in here after grabbing lunch next door, and it did not disappoint! I got a scoop of the cookie dough and the staff asked if I wanted a "surprise on top", which turned out to be the cute Oreo and marshmallow face on my ice cream. This is just damn good ice cream. A great place to sit and enjoy an old fashioned favorite!

Sal O.

Yelp
I like scoop enjoy because it has all my favorite flavors and it gives us surprises on our ice cream you should try it out

Howard A.

Yelp
Nice new ownership! They offer a great selection including low sugar variety .Wasn't happy with previous owner but will come backand sample some new Dole flavors !

Yelp
Pro-tip: Get the flight - three mini scoops for $5 which is great for anyone who likes more flavors but it is less ice cream than if you just got the double scoop. They offer samples!! Also, the ice cream is Lappert's Ice Cream from Hawaii so it's delicious! Definitely get the surprise. Highlights: I had a much better experience than my first time. The workers were so friendly and patient while I was deciding my flight flavors and let me sample a few flavors. I love the variety of flavors they offer because it's beyond the classic flavors, some have lots of mix-ins and some are Hawaiian inspired which is always fun. The flavors rotate, but my favorites have been the coconut macademia nut and Nuku Hiva (coconut pineapple ice cream brownie pieces raspberry sorbet). Lowlights: The flavors do rotate so you never know which you'll get. I've been really curious about their baked goods/cakes, they should think about giving samples out to let customers try them first since they are pretty big and most people go with ice cream on their mind!

Yelp
Oh my goodness this place is SOOO good!! Staff is super friendly, complimentary tastings. For someone who does not like ice cream I highly recommend! So many flavors and their lemon ricotta is to die for!!!! Our new favorite spot.
google avatar

Urba M.

Yelp
Fun and quirky spot to grab some ice cream! Lots of flavors to choose from. They ask if you'd like it with a surprise and give you a fun animal/character topping on your ice cream scoop. The service was very friendly and prompt. They also have soft serve - the dole pineapple and mango right now, that they switch out seasonally with blood orange and other flavors. Ice cream itself is creamy and fluffy and delicious! But the surprises take the They also sell cakes, cookies, milkshakes and boba tea here. My MIL had the lychee rose boba tea and she enjoyed it. Will be back!
google avatar

Audrey M.

Yelp
Such a sweet shop with an amazing selection of flavors. Took me awhile to decide, but I'll definitely have to come back and try more. Really nice staff and the ice cream is really good. They asked if I wanted the surprise and I said why not. So cute! Will definitely return.

Kelly O.

Yelp
The reviews are confirmed. Superb place. Kind service. Clean and well kept. Kids super happy

Yelp
I stopped in here with a couple of Yelp friends at another Yelp friend's recommendation. I was not dissappointed. So this is an ice cream place, but they have boba tea. Now this is a rare treat for me as there aren't an over abundance of places that sell it. I ordered the Granny Smith boba tea. This is made with guava nectar, pineapple juice, green tea, almond milk, and of course boba bubbles. Sweet deliciousness as I sipped on this delectable treat. A flavor explosion in my mouth as each boba bubble emerged through the straw. I am looking forward to my next boba tea here at Scoop and Joy Lounge.

Yelp
If you've ever been to Hawaii, you may already know of the deliciousness that is Lappert's ice cream. When looking for an ice cream shop one night, Yelp directed us to Scoop and Joy. I didn't really look too much into the offerings; I just saw the cute scoops and decided that was the perfect place to appease our sweet tooth. Walking in, I didn't notice the Lappert's sign in the window. I noticed all the Hawaiian-like flavors and it finally hit me that they served Lappert's. I am in love with their chocolate chip cookie dough because the dough chunks are huge. I also got a scoop of Nuku Hiva; coconut/pineapple ice cream with brownie chunks and raspberry sorbet swirl. It sounds like none of that would go together, but it's really quite delicious. I'm pretty sure two scoops at Scoop and Joy are cheaper than you can get them in Hawaii too! Pro tip: always say yes to the surprise!

Marzieh B.

Yelp
After having brunch in the neighborhood, a friend suggested this place for ice cream! They offer tons of different flavors. I tried a couple of them and loved the chocolate peanut butter and pistachio. They would ask you if you want a surprise, and if you do, they will make your ice cream super cute!! I already wanna go back again!

Stephen S.

Yelp
Under its previous ownership, Scoop of Joy was a great ice cream shop. You always received a generous portion of delicious ice cream and one of the owners was always working the counter to insure that the customer was fairly treated and happy. On our visits there since the sale, the shop has been managed by two unsupervised young women with no attention to customer service and quality control. Our last visit, the young woman who served my girlfriend gave her a generous single scoop as expected while the other young woman gave me a scoop that only partially filled the cup and was half the size of the other scoop. When my girlfriend paid for the two items, she should have refused to pay for the second item until the serving size was corrected. The girl who checked her out should have noticed the discrepancy and offered to correct it. Unfortunately, I did not notice the discrepancy until after the items were paid for and both girls were already serving other customers. I later sent an email to the owner and requested that something be done to make it right -- either a free scoop or an extra generous portion on our next visit. A reasonable request as we drove a round trip of over 12 miles to get their ice cream and left feeling cheated. The owner did not offer the courtesy of a response. Poor service and lack of quality control ALWAYS result in a failed business. Given the uncertainty of getting what you pay for on any particular visit to Scoop of Joy, it does not make sense to frequent them any longer. In my oppinion, there are better alternatives nearby.

Yelp
"Do you want a face?" The answer must always be yes. Great ice cream and fantastic customer service. Even better goofy ice cream faces. 10/10.
google avatar

Allison B.

Yelp
This is THE BEST ice cream in town! Also homemade treats (cookies, cakes, banana bread). Staff is always friendly and helpful! Love the "surprises" on treats for kiddos! It's a neighborhood staple and we love it!
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
Dole whip in AZ? BRB. Drove across town to try- this does not disappoint. Tastes exactly like the special treat from Disneyland/world but comes with a cute smile. Extra friendly service, very reasonably priced- and a pretty big portion for a medium. So happy to have found this place!
google avatar

Mansi S.

Yelp
This place is so cute! We were nearby and our usual go-to ice cream spot was closed for the night so we decided to give them a try. They have a good variety of flavors, lots of unique flavors. They offer milkshakes, sundaes, or ice cream sandwiches on cookies. There's also a good list of boba options! Opted for a single scoop in a waffle cone, they let you split it into two flavors if you like. Prices are very reasonable! The "surprise" on the ice cream is adorable, I think it would be so fun to bring kids here. Looking forward to coming back and trying some more desserts!
google avatar

Zack G.

Yelp
There is a great selection of flavors and options at Scoop and Joy and it's a cool place! I've been here a few times and my favorite flavor is probably the ube. I was excited to try the Kaui Coffee, but the bitter coffee flavor was a bit overpowering and the texture was not as smooth and creamy as I was expecting for ice cream. Still delicious though! I can't end this review without mentioning the "surprise". It's what they are known for, but I don't want to spoil it. Just say yes when the server asks!

Kyler G.

Yelp
Holy crap. This is a top tier establishment within the Scottsdale area! Zoe, one of the amazing scoopers there saw a friend and I come in and promptly cleaned and wiped down the tables and provided exemplary service. Totally recommend :))
google avatar

Sake C.

Yelp
Fun ice cream shop in North Scottsdale! Their ice cream comes from a manufacturer in Hawaii, so you'll see a lot of tropical flavors. They always ask you at the end if you "want a surprise"...then they make you a cute animal face on your ice cream.
google avatar

M M.

Yelp
Over 300 ice cream flavors in rotation! And so many are gluten free!! Absolutely delicious. Smoothies, boba, sundaes, cones, and more offered. They also provide made to order desserts and cakes. Clean restrooms. Lot parking. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Terry S.

Yelp
We have always loved Scoop and Joy, but wow did they take it to the next level with their remodel! New Ice cream flavors plus freshly baked waffle cones! We are so lucky to have them as our local ice cream parlor

Kels O.

Yelp
Wow! We were in the area and decided to check this place out. The staff was so naturally nice and helpful-I don't think I've ever had such nice staff in an ice cream shop before. The variety of flavors was great, and so yummy. The place was clean. I wish they had a bit more seating since it is hot in the summer. I loved that they ask you if you want a "surprise" on your ice cream. It made my 4 year old so happy. we will definitely be back if we are in the area again!
google avatar

Kayla S.

Yelp
Normally I'm not a big fan of surprises but when the surprise involves turning my scoop of ice cream into an adorable pup (or bear?) I couldn't resist! @scoopandjoylounge is the perfect place if you're in need of a smile and something sweet. I was torn between boba or a scoop of @lapperts so I got both! From the menu: Scoop of Hawaiian sea salt caramel in a chocolate chip cookie cone Not pictured- Goldie (mango, lychee, vanilla, green tea with boba) @wellfedbedhead
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
After seeing all the pictures on Instagram, we needed to stop by this place and give it a shot! My boyfriend got the the unicorn sundae, which he thought was delicious! I got the brownie sundae, which had vanilla ice cream, brownies, caramel sauce, and a rim dipped in chocolate chips. While it was good, it wasn't anything particularly amazing. Next time, I'd probably ask if the vanilla ice cream could be substituted with another flavor! My boyfriend's dad got a double scoop in a waffle cone that was so cutely decorated and he thought his ice cream was delicious. I would definitely come back to try some of their milkshakes and other ice cream flavors!
google avatar

Reena R.

Yelp
We were in the area so decided to stop by and try this ice cream shop. My husband thought he had heard about it from somewhere. The kids who were working were very nice. They said there are q00s of flavors that they rotate around. Lots of options but not your typical flavors. They had a lot of tropical flavors like lychee, coconut pineapple, coconut macadamia, mango, rainbow sorbet. My daughter was disappointed that the cookies and cream was a blue 'cookie monster' version. Son ended up getting lychee and husband had a pb and chocolate milkshake. Both were happy. They make a cute face on the ice cream for the kids.

Yelp
Terrible, don't get the good reviews. Tried it for the first time last night. Ice cream tasted old, and had a weird icy texture. Two single scoops for $11 and both of ours went right into the trash outside after a few bites. Better off sticking to Sweet Republic Response: I review places based on experience, I have a good mix of reviews not all 1 or 2 stars. We got one single scoop chocolate chip in a cake cone and a chocolate peanut butter in cup. Ok just shy of $11, $10.65. We walked over by Walgreens with the ice cream. Each just just had a couple bites and threw them away. After the terrible experience we just had at Goldie's next door we just wanted to leave. It's not our fault the ice cream had a weird texture and tasted old
