Where To Eat And Drink In San Luis Obispo

"One martini led to four martinis and before you knew it you were stumbling out of The Madonna Inn at 2:15am with a soy bean engineer’s number in your phone. Now it’s the morning after and you need a good cup of coffee and some bread. Scout Coffee is far and away our favorite coffee shop in San Luis Obispo. Every coffee bean is grown and roasted right in SLO and their house-made pastries are also tremendous (get the almond croissant)." - brant cox

Centrally located in the quaint historic downtown, on a side street with little traffic. Handicap parking spot right in front of the shop. A few tables and chairs to sit outside and enjoy your coffee in the sun. Large, bright interior with bright sunlight shining through the window. Plenty of seatings with high top and regular chairs. While busy when visiting there was basically no wait. Served quickly by a young, friendly and attentive associate. Good selection of hot and cold beverages and nice pastries. Counter area and tables were kept very clean. Great quality and reasonable pricing. Excellent find, will be our must stop when coming to or passing through SLO!

The sunlight streaming through the large windows combined with the greenery created such a relaxing atmosphere. I loved the laid-back vibe with locals casually dropping by. The coffee menu was diverse and everything I tried was delicious. I stopped by while traveling, but if I get the chance, I’d definitely love to visit again. Everything was perfect!🤍

Google
Wonderful! Staff is friendly, pastries are fresh baked every ml morning - even Sunday. Had the ml morning bun. Wow! Coffee is on brand and love the environment. Good job Scout!

Google
Very nice coffee and a good setup in downtown SLO. A popular spot and the service was good, with our coffees made quickly. Nice books and spots to sit for dining in and also while waiting. ☕

Google
The space is super crowded and noisy, with many people using it as a remote office. The coffee is pretty standard, nothing special, and served in relatively small portions. On the upside, the pastries look great

Everything was 5 stars. Pastries were awesome. Coffee was great also. Highly recommend.

For my first time coming here it was a bit busy but otherwise I enjoyed it everyone was super sweet and the drink and food I order was amazing!! Can’t wait to come back again!

Google
First time in this restaurant and definitely trying it again in my next visit to SLO. I loved this coffee place only bad thing it was full (On a Saturday) Good for business but not good for my first time wanting to have the full experience. I sat at the outside tables, it was a very nice morning to sit outside so I enjoyed that environment a lot. The service was fast-paced, friendly and organized. The order took some time to come out but I took into consideration how many orders were ahead of me. I loved their sweets I tried two; chocolate croissant and blackberry almond croissant. So delicious!! My coffee was a latte with oat-milk and the sunshine syrup which was tangerine and cinnamon…. Amazing!!! Their serving sizes were big enough to make it my breakfast meal instead of a snack with coffee. I recommend this place note; my experience was outside I spent little time inside, made my order, pay, take my order and eat outside. It was marvelous. I took the dishes back inside of course I ordered dine in but I did it “dine out”. Inside well you must enjoy places where you wait until a table gets empty and possibly wait until is cleaned or you clean it yourself with what you can etc. I’m sure the service is great enough that they would help you out in any way they can to accommodate you. Again I went on a Saturday maybe is not like that everyday. Hope you enjoy it as much or better than I did.

Yelp
This coffee is sooo good!! Had a vanilla latte and their gluten free scone (that was the only scone left and it was still amazing despite being gluten free). Everyone was very friendly and the service was very efficient. Lots of seating inside and some outside.

Yelp
Scouts is without a doubt one of my favorite coffee spots in SLO. I will go simple and get one of their more popular year round housemade syrups, like vanilla. But when it comes to seasonal drinks, Scouts coffee company has it together. Pictured I got the cardamon and orange latte iced and hot. You just never know which way it tastes better. Not pictured I am a fan of their butterscotch and the peppermint latte. Really no matter what you get at Scouts, the espresso is absolutely amazing. Now let's get into their pastries. I am a big fan of always getting the lemon pistachio shortbread, but I have tried others, like the chocolate banana loaf and honey cinnamon scone. I do always preference the lemon pistachio, but I am always thankful for their gluten free options when I bring those close with me who are GF. Service I can say I have always experienced a positive interaction with their team. Those at scout are always happy to make recommendations and I can appreciate the small conversation they make with customers while ordering. A cute place to be and great study spot if that's what you are looking for.

Yelp
Excellent coffee shop with cute little merch (mugs, T shirts, etc) and pastries as well!! The staff was SO freaking nice, just the friendliest people. Really awesome hospitality. The interior was adorable and spacious, and the menu had a really wonderful selection of interesting drinks! I got one of their seasonal hot lattes - it was apple spice I think? With oat milk. Tasted so heart and warm, perfect for the slightly cold but sunny morning we were having. We all got our drink to go, and walked around SLO afterwards. A really solid place to stop by for coffee or a pick me up if you're ever in SLO!

Yelp
Stopped by here to grab a coffee to go and it was a really cute coffee spot. It was really lively with customers and staff working behind the counter and the store is big, with ample seating inside. They sell coffee, pastries, and other items like Scout cups, bags, chocolate bars, etc. I ordered their hot matcha latte with oat milk and it was okay (3/5). Not the best matcha I've had. The oat milk was really overpowering so I couldn't really taste the matcha. My friend ordered their regular black coffee and said it was good, so maybe next time I'll have to try their lattes instead. I really did like the aesthetic of this coffee shop and would come back to try their other drinks.

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop, with a very friendly staff. I came in the afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. I ordered an ice matcha latte and an Apple danish- both items were pretty good. However, I do wish my danish was a little warmer but overall I did enjoy both items!

Yelp
I came to Scout Coffee Company with high hopes after seeing so many positive reviews, but I left feeling disappointed. The cold brew I ordered was decent but boring--just a generic cup that didn't stand out or leave me wanting more. I also tried their house-made vanilla bean syrup, but it was underwhelming and didn't add much to the experience. To make matters worse, the customer service was far from welcoming, which only added to my disappointment. A warm, inviting atmosphere can make up for a lot, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. Overall, Scout Coffee fell short for me in both flavor and experience.

Yelp
Love the ambiance here. It's super spacious and there's a little of everything here: pastries, drinks, coffee beans, cute items for gifts/yourself. If I lived in the area, I can imagine stopping by here to catch up with friends or just a pick me up. It was interesting trying out their flavored latte. I think next time I'd just get a regular latte since I'm not much into sweetened latte. Be warned, the flavored latte is double shot. Parking might be a little hard, at least right in front of the cafe since it's located in a small street with like 3 spots, one of them for handicap.

Yelp
Think Verve, Goodboy Bob, Blue Bottle, Go Get 'em Tiger, and other similar hip and trendy coffee houses. They have the requisite types of drinks: pour overs, cappuccinos, americano, lattes, matcha. They have the savory and sweet treats. They have the swag. We discovered they have at least 2 coffeehouses in SLO and one had a line out the door. All in all, you get very good selections: I had a kick ass Gibraltar and cheesy scone. The college crowd loves this place, too, and it seems to be a destination for gathering on a Sunday morning.

Yelp
Scout is a small coffee shop in downtown SLO. Stopped there during the New Year and was surprised on how packed the place was for the morning. There are plenty of tables outside and inside the shop as I saw many people conversing and studying. I ordered the vanilla bean latte as well as the chive and goat cheese scone. The goat cheese and chive scone tastes very similar to a Taiwanese green onion pancake, only thicker and drier. Although it's not to my taste, I can see the appeal in such a unique scone. Overall, the service was good and the latte was smooth and strong!

Yelp
My very first coffee shop in SLO I took a strong liking for back in 2014 as a Cal Poly student and this still rings true today now that I've moved back to the area with my wife. Their Garden Street (OG) location is iconic and my favorite across their various locations they have now to date. The brick wall behind the counter and indoor aesthetics are on point. Go-to coffee there every Friday morning is the honey cinnamon latte either hot or iced. Each latte comes out beautifully and their staff always is top notch like they have been since their inception. Cold brews here are fantastic too. No secret why this place has been so busy for a decade plus. Owners that started it had ties to Verve Coffee in Bay Area before starting this venture which I find super interesting as that was one of my favorite roasters and coffee shops up north. Downtown SLO staple!

Yelp
This place is so cute and welcoming. Very easy to find. There is very limited parking outside. I didn't see if they had parking for clients. They serve coffees, lattes, golden milk, and more. They also have sweets, like croissants, cookies, cakes, but we came a little bit to late that we only found chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. They also had chocolate cake. I wanted to try to croissants. Maybe next time I get lucky. The service is great. You make a line because it seems like the place is popular. The line went quick. My daughter got the vanilla latte and I got the golden milk. The vanilla late was so pretty when they served it. It was delicious. My golden milk had maple syrup. I thought it was great since I am trying to stay away from sugar. We really loved the experience. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Friendly service, serving up great coffee. Popped in as it was across from our hotel and I needed an afternoon boost. I got a triple Maple spiced Latte. Loved the inside, lots of seating with a cute little area for gifts, etc. my coffee was good, and while I like it strong (triple) there was zero maple/spice flavor? Regardless it tasted delicious and I would totally frequent if I lived in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has seating. At the bar, outside, and tables. They also have a menu that has something for everyone. I had to try their seasonal drink. I got the spiced butterscotch latte iced. It was good. I also looked at their pastry and got a scout cookie. The cookie was super delicious. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone.

Yelp
I'd rate this coffee spot 5 stars not because it's fancy but because it's artisan. The ambiance is very trendy and calming, staff were great, coffee and pastries 10/10, and they had beautiful latte art! There's seating inside and outside. Highly recommend for coffee lovers.

Yelp
We stayed at Hotel Cerro and was so happy to have a reliable coffee shop right across the street. Every morning during our stay, we walked over to grab a coffee and a pastry. I've gotten the Vanilla Bean Latte two consecutive days and it was delicious. The coffee shop is spacious - plenty of tables to chat with a friend, enjoy your coffee, or get some work done. They have a cute little coffee/merch station to shop small or local. Staff was very friendly! I just enjoy coming here each day. Limited parking on the street if you are driving over.

Yelp
Day 7 of spoiling my daughter. Quality/Quantity - My daughter did not know this downtown location existed... And it is your first location?!?! So we stopped by to buy her some treats. And she wanted a t-shirt souvenir for $35. Simple menu done well. Also got a drink and a snack. BTW - All baked goods are baked daily in-house. Atmosphere - Good size location. Clean organized bathroom, but you need a key. Open 7 days a week from 6:30am to 6:30pm. Service - Counter service. Price - $48; my daughter's $35 t-shirt jumped the bill up. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2014 with your 3 locations.

Yelp
Really pretty sleek looking place! Everyone is so friendly and helpful, which I really appreciated asking about different allergen needs. Their oatmilk matcha latte and oatmilk London fog were divine! Looking forward to trying some of their gluten free goodies next time
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little independent coffee shop in SLO. Loved that they make their flavor syrups in-house, and the prices were very reasonable. I had a vanilla bean iced soy latte and it was perfect, definitely hit the spot. The merch was suuuuper cute but too pricey for someone Just passing through, shame bc I definitely would have bought a shirt if they'd had some that were more reasonably priced!

Yelp
Stopped by for some morning caffeine, this place was solid with great ambiance. Street parking and restrooms available. Great place to study or meet up with friends .

Yelp
Hey caffeine friends! We were in SLO for the weekend and tried this place out because a friend recommended it. It did not disappoint and was exactly what we needed. Cute local cafe with pour overs, which we love because not every coffee shop has them. We ordered the Ethiopia and Colombian blend and were both delicious. We also ordered a ham and cheese croissant and cheese and chive scone which went perfectly. The aesthetic of the coffee, food as well as the shop itself was amazing. The employees were all super friendly and each did their part diligently. There's also a cute retail area that I didn't really go look at but saw a couple price tags that were pretty expensive but I'm sure with good reason. Seems like a place that values sustainability.
google avatar

Angela D.

Yelp
Came by to try their matcha latte with oak milk and another one on ice - I'm on a matcha kick. The latte was beautiful, hot and it tasted so good. The one on ice had more of the matcha flavor come through and it refreshing. Either way, you can't go wrong and it's in a good location. I love this place and the bathroom are clean too.

Yelp
I visit here and make it a point to get coffee. The Barista's seem to really love me. They keep giving me their hearts in the coffee. I'm a happily married man. This really a nice place with a great staff.
google avatar

Adriana L.

Yelp
Really cute coffee shop, the employees were very friendly and the coffee was good. When we went in it was pretty busy but they have enough seating. Even though it was busy we got our coffee quickly. Also, the prices are very reasonable.

Yelp
Love this coffee place in SLO for a quick pick me up. The ambiance felt bright and open and the service was nice. The ice French vanilla latte was tasty!

Tara

Yelp
Cute interior, good matcha, and good pain au chocolat. Service was good. Subpar in quality for the wait time and prices.
google avatar

Roselia G.

Yelp
Amazing artisan coffee! If this little chain were to expand past SLO, it would THRIVE! As of now there are two locations in the city of San Luis Obispo, and one in the next city over, but that's it. The shop itself is very cool, and the staff is great. My favorite drink is the raw sugar whiskey latte. It is unbelievable! Such a smooth and flavorful taste. Whenever passing through, you gotta stop by for a cup of Scout.
google avatar

Maisie G.

Yelp
Perfect oat latte, really cool coffee shop and great staff. Service was great and a cool ambience
google avatar

Ana M.

Yelp
Ah the vibe , the smell and the decoration Coffee shops should have a character and this one for sure has a strong one. Even the mugs and ornaments they sell is unique and full of character. The beautiful lady who got our order was super nice and helped us finding a closest hiking trail. We didn't have time to sit and enjoy our cappuccino but if you have time please go sit and enjoy the moment.
google avatar

Leslie P.

Yelp
Place is so cute and their matcha is delicious! I'm not a coffee drinker, but my fiancé likes their Americano. The pastries are also delicious and merch is to die for! We come here or their other location every time we are in town!
google avatar

Amy Y.

Yelp
Someone said this coffee shop is a magical experience and is the most sought after coffee shop in SLO. It's a cute little shop near downtown and the mission, opens from 6:30am-6:30pm. They offer fresh pastries and a chic cafe to sit in. Service to me was pretty average. Prices were reasonable about $5 for an iced latte. I tried their Madagascar vanilla bean latte and it was good, not overly sweet. The barista told me they make the vanilla bean syrup in house.
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy!!!!! Nice big open indoor area. Pup friendly inside and outside tables. Very patient and helpful staff too. Ordered my iced decaf mocha, extra mocha no ice and it was delish!! Great smooth coffee and plenty of chocolate. Even got a free pup cup for Fergus! We loved it!!!!

Yelp
This is my second time here visiting SLO from Tracy. Was referred by my bestie local, who great up here and she took me here. I love their set up and decor inside, its very modern and home feeling. Their menu is fun with their house made syrups for their coffees. They have good amount of space for sitting inside and outside. They are very accommodating, even when i ordered the Sunshine latte but wanted to change my mind since i saw how unique the wilderness sounded, they made it a breeze to change it without questions. Highly recommend this as a stop by, go to for your coffee when you're in SLO.
google avatar

Stacie M.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in town. Homemade syrups. I got the seasonal tangerine cinnamon in my oat milk latte and it was delicious. More cinnamon than tangerine but still delicious. Friendly and fast service.
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
Not bad! This is a trendy place and the baked goods looked amazing have to try next time.We had a cortado and cappuccino.Good coffee and service too
google avatar

Aman G.

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop and love the location and the fact that they do house made almond milk. We had matcha latte, cappuccino and latte and nothing disappointed. Staff was super friendly and service was spectacular.
google avatar

Kirsten M.

Yelp
The wilderness latte is one of the best lattes I've ever had! Got it with oat milk and it was delicious, creamy & unique
google avatar

Shay F.

Yelp
Very yummy stop and good for walking around downtown afterward. Central location in SLO
google avatar

Anderson G.

Yelp
The Vanilla Bean Latte with Almond Milk was so creamy and delicious! I have been here a few times and the service is always nice and the ambiance is very chill. A good place to relax and enjoy a tasty beverage!

Kellie D. M.

Yelp
Always great service. Best raspberry chocolate scones anywhere. Coffee also great. Nice people.
google avatar

Christopher D.

Yelp
It's a perfect coffee shop. There are plenty of options for high quality coffee & tea drinks. I wasn't feeling like anything fancy and the drip coffee was amazing. The bite that I had of the pistachio shortbread was delicious but my kid refused to share anymore than that. I hope to visit again soon. The service & ambiance were pretty ordinary but the coffee was the star.
google avatar

Karina H.

Yelp
not a huge sweets/pastry gal in the morning but after seeing this chocolate scone I couldn't resist. It was WELL worth it. Also got an iced vanilla latte and it was delicious. There are quite a few scout locations in slo so if your in the area make sure to add it to your list. Also a great place to come and study!
google avatar

Zohabe B.

Yelp
Super cool vibe with a very smooth and creamy latte and beautiful latte art. Fantastic stuff!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Excellent coffee and baked treats--try the raspberry oat bar-and a cool vibe. Parking is easy at the location nearest Cal Poly. If I lived in SLO, I'd be a regular customer!
google avatar

Alan H.

Yelp
I wanted a coffee and a place to charge my phone. Scout is a busy coffee shop but staff handled orders efficiently. I got a vanilla bean latte for 5.45 and it was good. My only suggestion is that they need more phone charging stations installed. I only saw one outlet but this is something people look for in a coffee shop. There were cookies and pastries that looked good but I didn't try.
google avatar

Jerry X.

Yelp
A cute little coffee shop right off of higuera street, Scout Coffee offers a pleasant vibe that epitomizes the slow-town feel of SLO. Our party of three initially intended to stop in just to grab some coffee before continuing on our journey, but as we stopped and sat down, we naturally ended up sitting and talking about for more than an hour. Scout Coffee Company is definitely worth a quick stop if not for the great coffee and service then for the warmth and inviting atmosphere. Check out Scout Coffee today!
google avatar

Jacqueline S.

Yelp
Beautiful area, outside seating with shade! Friendly fast moving baristas - this place is jammed inside with people ordering and others waiting, it's a college town everyone Needs their coffee! Coffee and pastries are fresh, good, tasty. Not sure if they have a low-cost refill policy, usually $1 for a refilled cup of coffee... but couldn't tell. Parking on this street is metered -use your phone to pay. Fun area to explore, energetic and many stores to browse in.
google avatar

Jevonah K.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in SLO! I came last month and got an iced honey lavender latte. I returned Labor Day weekend for another one and tried it hot this time. The honey lavender Matcha wins both hot and cold! Wish I could come here every day but maybe it's better for my wallet that it's a spot I visit occasionally when vacationing! Metered parking is available all over the place in SLO, and we were able to park 1 min away no problem at all.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
We popped in here while on our walk from the Apple Farm to Cal Poly. It had been sprinkling so we wanted a hot cup of coffee and my son wanted a snack. My husband enjoyed his Gibraltar (espresso-based drink with steamed milk but less milk than a latte). I had an Oat Milk Latte with Honey Lavender which I had never had before. It had a unique flavor but not too strong. The cup was really big. They seem to only have one size. My son had the Raspberry Crumble Bar and he really liked it. The inside of the cafe is comfy with tables and chairs, plus lounge chairs lining the walls. They have an outdoor patio as well. The staff was friendly.
google avatar

Mike V.

Yelp
Love this place and their pastries, just wish they had a much larger option for coffee! Their large is too small, but the pastries are good, the coffee is good, the service is good and the ambiance is good!
