Not many people know that Pascagoula, MS used to be called Scranton, MS a few decades ago. Oh, you knew that already? My bad. ;)
Anyway, Scranton's is a local landmark, being the remains of the local Fire Station in the 1870s, and the City Hall until the 1970s. Now what has this fine establishment become? A restaurant where you can find a congregation of nearly all of the local businessmen during lunchtime.
Upon entering the door, you are surrounded by numerous 1920s automobile memorabilia as well as mementos from Pascagoula's rich history. All of the waitresses have been working this restaurant for ages, and know most of the frequenters by name. Often, you can even be lucky enough to chat with the owner who mills around leaking tidbits of historical trivia.
Though the menu tends to be relatively standard (a decent selection of po'boys and other sandwiches, salads, steaks, and chicken), the food is ample and tasty. I've been here at least four times, and have never had a bad meal. I especially love the bountiful basket of flavored crackers on every table and the legendary sweet tea.
For those of you who love seafood, I have to mention that the fish that is toped with crabmeat and shrimp...talk about loading it with goodies (you know, if you're into that stuff)!
I ordered a salad (I know, I know...boooring), but even that was great. On the offchance that you can't decide, just order the special of the day, and you're likely to not go wrong.
Oh, and make sure to save room for the Southern desserts!
