Screamin’ Rooster - Review - Chinatown - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Screamin’ Rooster has extremely hot chicken—the kind you might consider serving your worst enemy (or a Cowboys fan). At night, the Chinatown spot can get busy, but the line is worth it for two simple reasons: the chicken is spicy and juicy. The meat has a blend of spices already in the breading and then gets doused in peppery Screamin’ sauce. You’ll need your waffle for relief (but don’t worry, they come with each order), or gulp down whatever drink is nearby. You can go for tenders, sliders, and a few different spice levels, so show up, stand in line, and be prepared to sweat through your favorite t-shirt if you go for the hottest." - Candis R. McLean

I was looking for something different and this place answered my call. I love their loaded fries. I had mine with mild chicken, cheese, pickles and cole slaw. I don't even like cole slaw but I enjoyed it on the fries. It was sweet and spicy at the same time. I even enjoyed their chicken and waffle. I just wish they seasoned their chicken a little more but other than that, I will be a repeat customer. Although, I was disappointed about the proportion sizes considering the prices. I really appreciate how everything was still crispy even though I got the food delivered.

Got the 5 wings and waffle for $10. The quality of the chicken is very good, but not as flavorful as I thought it would be. It’s a new place so I’m hoping they could definitely improve. The portion is kind of small for the wings option, I would pay a little more for a bigger portion. Overall not a bad place and I definitely think it will improve.

The food is really good here! I really enjoy the loaded fries. The portions changed over time though which isn’t worth the price.

One of my top 3 favorite hot chicken spots. Jahnny was so kind and generous we ordered the #4 combo and it was so delicious. The tenders were perfectly cooked crispy and juicy. Idk what they use to spice their chicken but they’re killing it! I’ve been craving it for days now! I’m definitely going to try the loaded fries next! Thank you guys again for being so king and opening a truly authentic hot chicken spot!

I’ve never had a Nashville hot chicken sandwich, but I hope they’re all like this! The texture and flavors were great. The staff was super friendly too.

Google
Everything about this place will have you coming back regularly. The food. The service. The people. The chicken is absolutely amazing along with everything else. Fries were crisp. Everything was flavorful. If the place was closer to me I’d be coming here EVERYDAY no lie. So if you’re in the area, absolutely make a visit. Staff are passionate and some of the best people you will meet. Also, the banana pudding is a sleeper item. Definitely grab some of that too. Be sure to give them a fat tip as well. They deserve it. 11/10 🔥

Got my order to go and it was so darn good! Stumbled across this place while visiting Philadelphia and it did not disappoint. Sliders were tender and juicy and the cheese fires were still crispy!

Google
Food is absolutely amazing! Service is great and the food was made fresh. We didn’t have to wait long at all even though they were busy. You can watch them making the food and they keep a clean kitchen. You can taste the quality in their ingredients and the meat is halal. The best and one of the only hot chicken spots in the area. It’s a family owned place that clearly cares about its product and it shows. Must try for anyone in the area!

Yelp
Hidden in the little food court is some amazing chicken! Very freshly cooked, and the fries are nicely seasoned as well. Different spice levels for anyone, a great kick. Choice of tenders or sandwich, and a few others. There's also some booths in the back of the food court if you want to eat there. Really good fried chicken spot to try if you're nearby. Thanks

Yelp
It wasn't busy at all when we arrived around 8:30pm. I got the #5 two tenders (medium sauce) with fries. The medium had a nice kick to it but the breading kind of just fell off the tender. He got the wings with buffalo sauce and fries and loved them. It was good for a fast food option.

Yelp
This is the place to go for amazing fries, and a delicious chicken sandwich. This is in a food hall, which has some really good options but we came specifically for the screaming rooster. You can sit in spacious chairs and find the table and sit with your family and you may find the huge screen TV to be a distraction, but The food was absolutely delicious and the portions were huge and I highly recommend.

Yelp
Came here a couple weeks ago with some friends after moving to Chinatown, and it was great to know that there is somewhere close by for this style of chicken. It was a bit difficult to find at first, but it is the rear area of the halal guys/icecream+boba shops. You'll walk through some double doors and find 4-5 restaurants on the left and right hand sides. There is seating and restrooms all the way in the back. We ordered the loaded fries (lemon pepper) and the medium spice 2 tenders + waffle (which comes with honey). Flavors overall were great (not overly spicy). The chicken was still very juicy so props to them, but the crust itself was very thick so it fried chicken felt like two entities: the crust and the meat. I personally like a thinner/flaky crust and would love to see for variety with that. For the price, I think the loaded fries and the 2 tender is most worth! Solid place in Chinatown; I still would come back and recommend anyone near the area to try it!

Yelp
Headed to Screamin' Rooster for Nashville hot chicken on a weeknight: terrific customer service--friendly and accommodating--and portion sizes! We tried: - Main Chick #4 (1 slider, 1 tender with fries) at a Medium* heat level--slider was basically a full-sized chicken sandwich, so I got a tender leftover! Medium made you start to sweat, but didn't take over your mouth. Fries were nicely seasoned. - Main Chick #6 (screamin' loaded fries) at a Screamin' heat level--spicy, but not unbearable (fellow diner asked for, and was given, extra hot sauce/pepper flakes). Give it a try if you're in the mood for Nashville hot chicken! *Options are Lemon Pepper, Plain, Mild, Medium, Screamin'.

Yelp
Just picked up a slider ($8) and screamin chicken fries ($13). Both "screamin" spice level. The service was amazing! The brother just opened shop in Chinatown Square a month ago. They truly love their food and with reason. The slider is a must-try. I added pepperjack cheese. When they were preparing the food, they asked if I wanted to try the "ghost pepper" spice, which isn't yet listed on the digital menu. It is very flavorful and brings the heat. Highly recommend. The fries were just as good but since I chose to only have the "ghost pepper" on the sandwich, it was not as spicy. Fries were a large portion for only $13. The pink/orange sauce definitely made it even better! Everything was amazing. Great food, friendly service, and affordable prices! I will definitely be back, next time I'll order 2 sliders with ghost pepper!

Yelp
Jersey's halal restaurant market continues to be FLOODED with hot chicken spots, but Philly was definitely in need of one. I've tried the few around Philly area and wasn't too impressed with any of them. I'm thrilled to say that I've found something exceptional. I came in on the evening of the grand opening. This spot is located in Chinatown Square, an indoor restaurant hall. It wasn't too crowded at this point, so I got some time to talk with the owners. They're very friendly and passionate about their business I was also thrilled to see that they're going to be a late night food spot open 3PM-3AM daily. They did a great job providing info about the options on the menu. The menu offers several combos of chicken entrees including wings. They have four spice levels: plain, mild, medium, and Screamin'. Most halal hot chicken spots don't serve wings, so I wanted to try these out. I decided to order the Main Chick #3 combo, which comes with a waffle and five wings. I came with a relative who went for the Main Chick #4 combo, which came with one slider, one tender, and fries. Our food came out shortly after, and the owners kindly offered us free drinks. The food looked delicious and exceeded far beyond our expectations. The slider is a real chicken sandwich, not the small little sandwiches they serve in many restaurant chains. The chicken in both entrees was cooked perfectly. It was fresh, crispy, and tender. The wings even managed to have flavor beneath the crispy coating. The medium spice level combined the perfect duo of heat with a hint of sweetness. Every other meal component from fries to the homemade waffle to the condiments was perfect. I'm very critical when it comes to reviewing restaurants; I've tried a ton in and outside of Philly over the years. I can honestly say I don't have a single negative critique of this place. I've tried both halal and non-halal hot chicken, and this one stands far above other ones. Pricing, quality, and service are great. I highly recommend to anyone dining in the Philly area.

Yelp
I came here last night and wanted to update my initial review. These guys definitely seem settled in and everything went super smooth. They have a digital menu that you can see from the back of the line which was a nice update. The boxes the food came in was clean and not covered in grease. These guys are super friendly and they know what they're doing with their chicken I decided to go with a #5 - two tenders and a waffle and it absolutely hit the spot. I took some friends here after they were raving about Asad's and Nanu's hot chicken, and they all have a new favorite spot now. Keep up the good work guys!

Yelp
Not easy to find but a pretty decent chicken sandwich. They need to add a sauce between medium and inferno. Guy talked me out of inferno, but medium was disappointingly bland for me. Fries were good and crispy (even after a 15 minute walk) but they should give more dipping sauce with that size order.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVED their Nashville chicken. Normally I opt out of sauce but I forgot to remove and it was the best mistake I had made. The seating in their location is very unique as it ties in other locations. Love the heat and flavor presented along with perfect crispiness to every bite.

Yelp
My close friends often refer to me as the Chicken Girl () I take my chicken very seriously and deep fried mostly. Philadelphia's food scene is evolving, and I am here to savor every minute of it. My favorite fried chicken Sandwiches used to be from Chick Fil A and jollibee. Then came Love & Honeys in Fishtown, then I decided to drive down to northeast and discover Asad's (blown away by them). I am still waiting to make a trip to try Gusto's. But I am 100% happy and excited to have Screamin' Rooster so close by. I waited in line on their opening day, of course it's new, so some delays were expected and some kinks still need to be worked out. I got the sandwich and the Main Chick #5 which is tenders over fries or waffles. I chose to get the fries. The Chicken is perfect, huge pieces, crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. I got the medium, and to me it was enjoyable, but I could use a little more heat. Also not sure if it was me but I also got hints of coconut oil. Not a fan. But overall my experience was great, I can't wait to head back. It's especially perfect since they are open late on Friday's and Saturdays. Screamin' Rooster - Welcome to Philly !

Yelp
Forgot to take a picture because I was too excited to try this place! I got the Main #4 to try a slider and a tender + fries. The guys working were super helpful and kind with my indecisiveness. They actually let me try one thing at the medium and one thing at the screamin spice level for the things I got. (I went with a medium slider and screamin tender). They put ghost pepper in the screamin' spice, so its definitely spicy, but so good . I do have a really high spice tolerance and i'll describe it as on the same level as the samyang buldak ramen (iykyk). The slider was also great. The slaw does well to mask the medium spice and pickles were super fresh. The fries have a spice mix on them as well but they're not spicy, more like cajun seasoning. Note: I would recommend eating there if you can for the best crunch factor. Overall, I really enjoyed everything I got, and I would definitely come back with some friends that can handle their spice.

Yelp
I stopped by on 7/30 sometime after 9:30PM, and ordered the Main Chick #4. Service: 5/5 It's a small group of guys that work together efficiently. The guy that took my order was patient and professional. There were six orders ahead of me and the food is made to order, so pack some patience. It took about 20 mins for my food to come out. Main Chick #4: 4.8/5 This combo comes with 1 chicken tender slider, 1 chicken tender and fries. I chose the Screaming spice level. It's one of the spicier flavors and to me the flavor mix tastes like 70% smokey and 30% spicy. You really taste the spices when you eat the chicken tender by itself. *** You can pick different spice levels for the slider and tenders. If you're ordering on Uber Eats, add your picks in the notes section!! The tenders are very juicy and well seasoned. The slider was my favorite! All of the flavors married well with each other and the brioche bun was very soft. You have the option to add an extra tender and cheese. My least favorite were the fries. Feedback: 1) The fries were just okay. I'm biased bc I feel like curly fries pairs better with this type of food. 2) I think it would be great for them to have those buzzers or send a text letting you know when your order is ready. There's a seating area down the hallway and had I known it would be 20 mins, I would've had a seat instead of standing. Everyone waiting in line was blocking the counter of the business across from it. I definitely will be back! (Not my greatest picture)

Yelp
I ordered here on my way out of Philly, and don't regret it. I ordered the main chick #2, and it didn't disappoint. The chicken was flavorful and tickled every tastebud on my tongue. I ate so quick I didn't get any pictures, but it was delicious.

Yelp
Solid favor, great services and enough to fill you up. The spicy is good if you like it hot enough to sting.

Yelp
This place is terrific, prices are low and the food is amazing. The chicken is fried and seasoned fresh and the portions are large especially considering the low prices. I snagged the two tenders and fries with their homemade banana pudding. The staff was friendly and service was quick, do yourself a favor and give this place a shot!

Yelp
Really good hot chicken - juicy, fresh, and packs an immediate heat. The sandwich had coleslaw, pickles, and their signature sauce. Ordered the hottest one on their menu (screamin')... not as hot as down in Nashville, but way hotter than Asaad's.

Bobby M.

Yelp
Great chicken tenders, you can choose your spice levels, medium is fairly spicy so be careful when ordering if spice tolerance is low. Fries were good. Chicken was freshly breaded and fried fresh as well. Came with a side of their house sauce which was a creamy orange mayo mixed hot sauce that added an even bigger kick. Tenders were decent sized, I

Yelp
Delicious, would eat again The main chick 4 is the best I get to try the sandwich and the tender and some fries. The fries are really good. I am definitely coming back

Yelp
GO EAT HERE NOW! I've always wanted to try Nashville hot chicken but never have been able to because I only eat HALAL. BABY! As l soon as I came across this restaurant on the interwebs for something new, my handsome lunch date (son) & I were literally in my car on my way to Chinatown. Then, I was freaking bummed because I scrolled down only to see that they were not yet open for the day. My heart and mind were already set on this place. No other would satiate my craving. I distracted myself with mundane errands for the next TWO HOURS. That's how I excited I was. I sent my son in (because Chinatown parking, iykyk) at 2:59. They open at 3. Twenty minutes later, the bag was secured. They did not disappoint. We ordered two things to share: Main chick #1 medium level spiciness: 2 "sliders" with their fixings & FF. They were 2 FULLSIZED chicken sandwiches. Generous portions and tasty. Perfect spice level for us. Fries were those battered ones and crisply delicious. Chicken wings screamin' level spicy: They were hot (temp wise) and juicy. So good. Now these were SPICY but good. I love all things spicy. I'm talking extra spicy chili oil on errrthang. But these wings...whew. I needed to sip on my iced tea while eating these. Bill came to under $27. So happy to add another one to our list of go-to places where we don't have to worry about cross contamination because it's HALAL! 10/10 RECOMMEND

Yelp
As close to Nashville hot chicken as you'll get in Philly! Screamin ' Rooster is tucked away in unassuming cafeteria in Chinatown but it's definitely worth a visit! We tried their chicken sandwich (medium spice level) which was perfectly fried paired with cole slaw. We'll have to come back for the wings next time. Perfect after a night out (they're open until 3am) or whenever that fried chicken craving hits - great find!

Malika G.

Yelp
Food was delightful we will definitely eat here again. I understand now why the wait was so long the food is amazing

Yelp
PLEASE READ FULL REVIEW! Review is a simple comparison to other hot chicken spots in philly. I really wanted to give a 4 star however after much debate I have come to the conclusion of 3 stars. 3 stars because it wasn't bad. It was just ok. If you try the tender by itself you'll get a slight sour taste. However with a full bite of the sandwich you won't notice it. Issue is, the chicken lacks severe flavor. They really need to increase the seasoning. Then comes the sauce. Too less compared to all the other halal hot chicken sandwich spots. As you see in the pictures it's lightly drizzled so I couldn't really tell how "good" their sauce is. The tender itself is also smaller compared to other places. I had the medium level spice and the guy behind the counter suggested I may need a drink. Typically I don't but I figured it's best to be on the safe side. I'd consider myself a Spicey eater so for me the medium did not need a drink lol. The first bite you'll notice a nice kick to it but after few bites it kind of neutralizes. The coleslaw was pretty good and the buns were perfect. Not too sweet. Pickles were just regular cheap whitish pickles. I had ordered the sandwich with pepper jack cheese which cost an extra $2 BUT my sandwich did not see the day light of that cheese. I don't understand how they forgot it since there were absolutely no customers and when I walked in all the workers were standing out side the counter socializing. I ordered their number 1 which is 2 sliders and fries. The fries were actually good. Sadly the fries were the star of the dish. I usually get full off of 1 slider but not with this one. they also do not give a side of extra sauce for the fries like other places do. The upside is they claim to be zabiha halal and this could be the cause of the smaller tender (I've noticed zabiha chicken are not as swollen as others) they are also open very late. Other than missing the cheese the service was good. Friendly people. I don't see myself going back there for a while. However given the fact that they just opened up hopefully they'll make some tweaks and I'll see them sometime down the line again.

Christina P.

Yelp
I had the chicken sliders. This was by far the best chicken sandwich I ever had!!! I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Newly-opened fried chicken joint that is open LATE Friday-Saturday. John and his team were great and very helpful and the loaded fries were topped off with chicken tenders that were juicy and flavorful. Will definitely come back to try their other options.

Yelp
Amazing food & amazing people. I drive from delaware every week to eat here. Definitely worth the hype.

Yelp
got on a whim really late at night, delicious food! really recommend the banana pudding
