Sometimes you get smiled on. My husband bought a Groupon and neglected to notice that the emphasis was on the place being a bar not a restaurant and we no longer drink. So with some trepidation, we traveled up to Legacy and the Tollway and found a pleasant surprise in Scruffy Duffies.
With an actual somewhat scruffy brick, board, wrought iron and sports bar/pub atmosphere, the main room is loud and cavernous with multiple jumbo screens and a long bar across one end. There's a small pool room separate from the main room and then, through another door, is the patio.
Now the patio is unusual in that it's not actually outdoors; the parking garage is above it. However, wrought iron doors open onto the sidewalk, NOLA style, and there are misters and fans and built in heaters and a fireplace for the colder months. It's a terrific design and no one but us was interested in being out there. It was perfect; but it was a Tuesday, so I wouldn't expect that on a weekend, anytime.
The food was also surprisingly good. We split two sandwiches: a club sandwich that was the perfect bite with thick bacon and a pesto aioli and a savory Philly Cheese Steak on a wonderfully fresh and soft hoagie roll. They came with your choice of fries or tots. We tried both and they were terrific - soft inside and crunchy outside. Both sandwiches were also modestly priced.
My spouse wanted to try the crispy chicken wings and of the 4 available versions, he opted for Cajun. The 10 wings for $13.00 came with giant carrot and celery sticks with ranch dressing. The wings were perfectly cooked and crispy; but the seasoning, although flavorful, didn't strike me as Cajun and was simply too salty. It lacked any heat or paprika. They were good with the ranch dressing, though.
A special mention about our server, Rian. She made an effort to meet us at the door, seat us out on the patio and then had to continue to attend to only us out there while keeping tabs on everyone else inside. She was exceptionally busy; but always kept an eye on us. I never saw anyone else. She had a lovely personality, as well.
We liked Scruffy Duffies. Parking was easy - across the street or in the garage. It's a comfy place to eat, drink and watch sports. I noticed they have a live DJ on Friday and Saturdays and all kind of specials through the week. We had a good time and would return.
