After dealing with our unfortunate turn of events, it was too early for dinner but everything was closed, so we walked around downtown Denver to kill time and work up an appetite. After we walked around the Capitol and Civic Center Park, we decided to walk to the Sculpture Park. It was a bit of a trek, but hey, we had nothing better to do, and we might as well get our steps in.
The reason why we chose to walk to the Sculpture Park is because we like parks, and we like public art. However, we hadn't really done our research about the Sculpture Park and I thought it would be a cool park with sculptures, like the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden in DC, so I was extremely disappointed when all I found was a crappy field with one sculpture.
I'm not criticizing the sculpture, the 60 foot "Dancers" by Jonathan Borofsky, but it wasn't so amazing that the walk in the hot heat along busy roads and glass-covered sidewalks, past numerous homeless camps, was worth it. The sculpture was just so-so, and the "park" was gross and ugly, with trampled grass and no amenities. I also really had to pee, and out of desperation I walked to the port-a-potties in the park, only to find that they were locked. Perhaps there were washrooms elsewhere, but I didn't see any.
From what I have since discovered, the Sculpture Garden is located at the Arts Complex and it is a popular place for outdoor events. But in my opinion, unless there is an event happening, the Sculpture Garden is nothing but a barren field. Don't go out of your way (like we did) to see it.
