"Dating all the way back to 1757, this striking former mill looks like it's been taken off the front of a Norfolk picture postcard. Lovingly restored by sisters Siobhan and Caitriona Peyton, it's now a chic dining pub with contemporary bedrooms and a riverside terrace. The cooking doesn't reinvent the wheel, but instead offers well-judged, flavoursome dishes like green gazpacho with Cromer crab. Ensure you save some room for dessert, especially if the terrific Norfolk pear and hazelnut tart is on the menu." - Michelin Inspector

Sculthorpe Mill, Fakenham, Norfolk - Explore & Book

"Heading home after a glorious day on the beach at Holkham, you might wish you could just stumble upon a welcoming old pub on a sleepy river somewhere. You’d sip gin as the sun sinks over the fields, then dine in style on smoked trout and samphire before wandering upstairs to fall into a sumptuous bed. Well now you can. Sculthorpe Mill is just 20 minutes inland from the finest stretch of North Norfolk’s coast but far from the thronging hordes at Burnham Market. Steeped in fields, it’s so tranquil here that there’s a nature reserve next door; the mill pond looks like Constable’s Hay Wain. Inside, though, it’s another story. The Peyton sisters (veterans of The Atlantic, and Peyton and Byrne gallery eateries) have poured gallons of style into this quaint 1757 mill, creating warm contemporary spaces with flamboyant touches, and filling 7 spacious bedrooms with luxuries such as super-kingsize beds, Nespresso machines, and drenching rain showers. But locals flock here for the fabulous food. Executive chef Elliot Ketley has created a brilliant menu, working his alchemy on Norfolk’s finest produce. So spend a few days here, sign off from the modern world, and explore Norfolk’s wondrous beaches. Highs The food is phenomenal. Local ingredients made epic Great location, 30 minutes from King’s Lynn: easily accessible from London, Cambridge or the northA whole array of beaches lie within easy reach Modern, stylish and feel-good décorVery comfortable rooms: deeply cosy beds, excellent showers, Nespresso machines and good tea Lows No lift in this quaint old building, so the 7 bedrooms are reached by stairs No televisions in the rooms – take this chance to switch off from the modern world – but the WiFi is excellent and Roberts Bluetooth speakers are there for your own soundtrack, if you need one This is a buzzy pub, and music from the bar, mellow as it is, can be heard on the top floor" - Christabelle Dilks

Our B&B host, who runs a local cookery school about 10 minutes away, gave Sculthorpe Mill his hearty recommendation. We are very glad to have followed his advice. Located on a fast-moving stream at the end of a dead-end road and surrounded by benches and tables under the trees, the mill looks lovely. One walks into a bar, and dining is up some stairs in a large room that is a nice mix of old and new. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive, and our drink orders were taken promptly. We started with a lovely small plate of cured ham and pickles, then moved into mains of pork loin and a venison dish that incorporated delicious potato dumplings. Everything was nicely presented, tasty, well-proportioned, and fairly priced.

We needed somewhere to cater for our Family wedding 21st September 2025 the Staff at Sculthorpe Mill were more than happy to oblige! They gave us a couple of rooms, one filled with Food and Drinks, which was amazing!! If you haven't been, you must try it. If you have been, you'll know what I mean.... Thanks again from Mr & Mrs Rumney xx

A truly magical setting that is so popular, as it is even busy on a Monday!!! The food is cooked to order so it is not a speedy establishment, but when you are with friends, forget WiFi, and just talk, it is not one of those fast food chains so it is priced accordingly. Service was friendly and unobtrusive and the servers had smiles on their faces, a rare commodity in todays marke. An enjoyable lunch with two friends.

Delicious lunch. Chose from the restaurant menu and told had to eat inside if eating from that menu. Restaurant did have gorgeous decor and really lovely service. Took drinks outside into the beautiful, garden afterwards - there were people eating from restaurant menu outside, so that was a bit disappointing as we had gone there to sit in the sunny gardens. But doesn’t detract from the quality of the food and service and lovely surroundings.

Bit dissapointed, our first visit and eagerly anticipated as I'd heard got things regarding the restaurant. We had the pie, a share for two meal, unfortunately it was a bit on the dry side, needed more sauce inside it, and the pastry was over done. But personally and I mentioned this to the waitress, who was very nice, more vegetables would hve been appreciated, maybe carrots and broccoli, a nice combination wth pie, we had some new potatoes, and what I thk was reheated cabbage, horrid! We paid £87.00 for a disappointing and mediocre meal.

Haven't been here in a while. Believe the Mill has changed ownership. Found a space on the (busy) car park. Very pleasant setting. Ordered drinks which were reasonably priced and then went through to the garden. Pleasantly surprised. Spacious and well laid out. Live band who were decent. Outside kitchen Worth a visit.

Fantastic location for lunch. We ate in the garden, which wasn't our booking- but the weather was nice; the staff were lovely to specially accommodate a table service for our picky musical chairs family. The food was exquisite. The menu was small but well formed. Maybe for myself too many fish options, leaving options for sharing plates or a steak. But in this world we often have too much choice. Wine selection was fab. Staff more than amazing and friendly.

We decided to visit Sculthorpe Mill after the reviews. We went with friends who we hadn't seen in a long time. All I can say is we were utterly disappointed. The shared roast was vile. It came with a full chicken which was OK but the veg consisted of carrots and no other veg. The potatoes were OK, the gravy/jus obviously came out of an Asda packet which had no taste to it one bit. I spoke to the manager about my concerns and his attitude was extremely defensive and no apology. He did give some money off our bill which at least was something but ive never had such poor roast in my life. I could make one better myself! Let's put it this way, I will not be returning.

Yelp
What a disappointment!!! Over the last decade or so my family has used Sculthorpe Mill for casual meals and big parties... lovely setting, lovely food, lovely service!! Alas no more... new ownership After waiting over 50 minutes for our food to come, my brother's medium steak turned out to be burnt shoe leather!!!he called the waitress over and asked for a medium steak! Nothing arrived and my mother and I had finished our meal so he just told the waitress to forget his order and we would just get the bill and go!! Enter angry blond woman who tried everything to get him to stay and eat his meal... argued with us over how long we had been waiting!!! Her attitude was very aggressive so I asked her to leave and please stop talking at us!! She accused me of shouting( I wasn't) and informed the room exactly how rude I was! We went to pay at the bar... no mention of food fiasco... no sorry for your meal etc... just give us this much and good bye!!!! This is not the first negative review I've read and heard since the new owners took over! Completely ruined an always pleasant place to eat!
