I had been walking around downtown Greensboro a lot and was so glad I stumbled into this cozy, locally owned bookstore. It was the perfect place to take a break—grab a book, read a few pages, and relax in the charming back area. I loved the thrifted, vintage-style furniture—it adds so much character and makes the space feel warm and inviting. A real hidden gem!

Google
I loved the bookstore and the selection, their inclusivity is abundant and beautiful. I was not incredibly impressed to pay cover price for a used book with damage and crayon marks on the cover, but maybe that’s just me being picky.

Google
All the great characteristics of a classic book store. The sights, the smells, the feel of real books old and new. Coffee bar and sitting area, just simply wonderful

Lori A

Google
Lovely little shop with a wonderful coffee bar. The staff were so kind and welcoming. It was nice to see the regulars come in & the staff greeting them by name. Great place!

Tiana G

Google
Lovely bookstore, with such a great warm atmosphere. They have some suggestive books and it seems the majority of novels are definitely catered towards a select audience but other than that, it’s a nice little shop.

Google
Love the employees. Love the atmosphere. I just love small independent bookstores. I'm so glad its location is easy to get to by car and/or public transportation.

Google
silent book club is the best. focused time to read and great people to talk to. And even when I ducked in on a rainy day the friendly staff and people browsing make it feel like a calm, safe place in a crazy world.

Google
What a lovely bookshop . So much to browse and look at. Good selection and feels very friendly when you enter .

Yelp
Such a big space! I didn't realize it was so big from the outside. Large selection of new and used books. They can order almost any book for you if they don't have it in stock (which I did). They also have wine, coffee, tea and water options, along with snacks. Lots of space to sit and read and enjoy your beverage of choice! Everyone is respectful of each other's space and controlling voice levels as not to interrupt. Cannot wait to go check out the silent book club that meets there!!

Yelp
I've been super excited to stop by here for the books and cafe, but honestly, I was a little disappointed today. I will start by saying that the book selection is AMAZING. I love the selection, I love the curated displays, I love the political stance they take in what they do and do not stock. I love everything about it. In fact, I spent $117 and probably would have kept going, but I cut my visit short. With that said, this is the LOUDEST bookstore I have ever been in, in my entire life. Clearly there was some kind of children's event going on, because there were dozens of small kids running around. And I love that it is child friendly-- that is vital to a community. But I want to emphasize that the kids were RUNNING around. And screaming, and "playing" recorders. I expect a certain level of chatter and squealing when there are so many kids, but I do think that part of the importance of kid friendly space is that it is a way to teach children the social norms of a given environment. I.e., "we don't play tag inside bookstores." Ultimately, it was so loud and chaotic that we didn't end up staying to check out the cafe. It would have been like trying to enjoy books and tea inside a Chuck E Cheese. Super overstimulating and generally unpleasant. I was actually really torn when deciding how many stars to give this-- I am super excited about my new books and I am always happy to see progressive businesses that are family friendly. So, in theory, I like this a lot. But did I, personally, actually enjoy it that much while there? Not really. I'll have to come back another day. I really wanted to like this. I'll be sure to check the events calendar and avoid times when they're hosting things with kids, since clearly some people treat that as a free for all.

Yelp
We randomly bopped in here for a bathroom and were pleasantly surprised - we found a cozy, clean, friendly local coffee and bookstore! They had a great selection of books and very approachable staff making coffee.

Yelp
This is the definition of a local bookstore. I absolutely LOVE this place. The place isn't your fancy perfect bookstore instead, it has a home-y vibe. My daughter loves this place too. It's quiet where she could read books while I'm working or doing something. The people here are also nice and friendly. Coffee's also great I'm usually not the person who likes places like this but something about the energy of this place is

Yelp
Wonderful bookstore with new and used books. They also carry books from their own independent publisher. This store has a cafe too. A must visit if you enjoy local bookstores. A bit jealous that we don't have as good a bookstore in Durham.

Yelp
We stop in here often. I love the selection of books. They have very cozy spots in the store to enjoy coffee, wine and to read. There is a unisex bathroom is actually very thoughtful. There is a changing table and lady products. I've had coffee here and it was very delicious. Check them out online. They have events there often if you are looking for socializing activities. The cashiers were very nice and offered complimentary bookmarks.

Yelp
My husband, my Dad, and I visited this bookstore while on a day trip to Greensboro yesterday. The store is much bigger than it looks from the outside. They sell both new and used books. There is a bit of something for everyone. They have tables and comfy chairs in the back of the store which makes it a great place to study or work. There were a few people there studying. One of them took a stretch break and told us he studies there all the time and asked if he could help us find anything. How nice! My husband ordered an iced chai latte from the coffee shop inside the store and he said it was amazing. Very cool that there is a coffee shop inside the book store I was looking for a very particular genre of books and someone helped me find where to look in the new section and in the used section. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly and helpful. They even had a clean bathroom! If we lived closer we would definitely frequent this amazing place.

Yelp
I had written a review of this place fr Yelp but can't find it now, perhaps blipped. We stumbled onto this place on a Friday evening while walking around the area before a performance at the Tanger Center. We love books and we enjoy wine, so this place was like a little slice of heaven. My wife purchased a book and we enjoyed some vino before the performance. There was an event going on in the back (author reading?) and the vibe was very social and friendly. Our kind of place.

Yelp
Scuppernong Books is an independent bookseller in Downtown Greensboro. When you walk in, it is very welcoming and it is easy to browse and find those books you were looking for. I liked you could see a lot of the covers and see something you'd like that you didn't know you wanted before. I liked the theme sections as well. The local books and the banned books are the areas that got my focus and brought me back the next day to pick up more books. The bookstore has been open ten years and besides selling books they have events. One was just finishing up when I arrived the first day. You can also stop at the cafe for a drink and Jerusalem Market will deliver food if you order it. I'd be a regular here if I lived closer but look forward to my next visit.

Yelp
I haven't been in for a while, but glad I stopped in today. They have a wide selection of great titles to explore. The coffee bar is great and prices are reasonable. I enjoy browsing in Scuppernong Books. You're sure to find a great book in here.
google avatar

Yelp
A great little locally owned book store. The offer sections such as local authors, staff recommends and many of their books are faced out which makes for a great buying experience and as someone who Judges a book by its cover...I came home with many titles. Inside is also a little cafe offering coffees and teas. They have a cozy reading area in back as well. If you're a book lover you need to stop.

Yelp
Came across an independently owned neat bookstore in downtown Greensboro. They sell new, used and even some rare books. Three words describes this bookstore: books, wine, community. Check out their website for events. Disappointed that I missed their wine tasting last Saturday. The name, "scuppernong" (muscadine native to southern US), caught my attention. I'm a wine enthusiast. Being a proud Grammie that I am, I headed to the kids section to find something for my granddaughter. She's only 21 months old but already addicted to books. Lol She signs and says ,"books" whenever she wants you to read to her. So excited when I found a book called, "Kitty Corn" and a plush animal that goes with it. The cashier said that her daughter have the same book and that she loves it. I plan to go back when they have wine tasting.

Yelp
This little bookstore is so cute! It's filled to the brim with a great selection of new and used books. Has cozy seating if you want to hunker down. And has a large coffe/wine bar.

Yelp
I love books! And I love Scuppernong! The atmosphere is comforting! They have a great selection of current books and classics. My favorite part....? The squeaky floorboards! A great staple of the community!

Maya B.

Yelp
Nice and cozy atmosphere for any bookworm. I love the addition of the cafe and an area in the back to read. I like that it brings the community together with the book club it has. Would definitely go back just to sit and read in there.

Yelp
I fell in love today!! This place is gorgeous and smells like books, what more could you need. Picked up two books I've been waiting to read and browsed for a magical amount of time. They have a used section in the back that I am all about! If you need books highly recommend coming to check here prior to Amazon or Barnes!! Yay for book smells and coffee!!!

Erin C.

Yelp
I think this might be the best bookstore I have ever visited! The shelves are lined with all the best genres. There is a coffee and wine bar. There is plenty of space to sit and read a book, and perfect low key music. There are bathrooms and several book clubs you can join virtually. All the staff members were so kind and helpful! Shout out in particular to Mo who spent a great deal of time with me and my brother :)
google avatar

Samantha B.

Yelp
Great bookshop. I come here to use as a co-space when i don't want to go onto campus or into the office. They have a great selection of books. The coffee shop is great and drinks always come out perfect. Not too loud in there as well which is a plus.

Yelp
Amazing little find in downtown greensboro. I totally support the little book store over Amazon or Barnes and noble. Notice, as of August 7th, only fully vaccinated can stop by for drinks. Need the vaccination card as a proof. This store has a small selections of books but great selections beyond imaginable. The recommendations always stand out and all were great recommendations. Helpful and most friendly staff there is always a plus!!

Yelp
Adorable bookstore with a well-stocked bar and friendly service! I popped into this place while waiting for a show at The Carolina Theater. The space is cozy and exudes warmth, making you want to stay for hours, just as a good bookshop should. The selection of books is smaller than you'd find at most stores, but the choices seem to be thoughtfully curated. I especially loved the selection of children's books, which were timely, relevant, and educational. Having worked in the Kid's Department of a large bookstore for several years, I remember parents asking for recommendations in which a black or Hispanic child was the main character; or they'd be looking for a book about recycling and taking care of our planet; or they wanted something that would teach their little girl that she was strong and brave - this bookstore has all of those in spades. They seem to do a fair amount of readings and book signings, since I noticed a space for this in the back of the shop and plenty of signed copies mixed in amongst the book stacks. The cafe/bar has a nice selection of beer, wine, coffee, and tea. I went with a masala chai latte, but I liked the beer and mead choices! They have 3 craft beers on tap, and about a dozen or so more bottled. And you can order wine by the glass or by the bottle. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Very cute bookstore and cafe with a great selection. We had a drink and ended up with a bag of books to take home. The staff was friendly and answered questions. We had a nice visit and would definitely return when we come through town again.

Yelp
Scuppernong is a great place. The only one star review is from someone referring to drag queens as "graphic adult entertainers" which is homophobic and transphobic rhetoric. If you follow those kinds of beliefs I doubt you read anyway, so I'm not sure why you need to go to a bookstore! Support local business and be as gay as you want at Scuppernong. There's a peaceful café area in the back for your drag queen book club or sapphic poetry circle. ‍‍

Yelp
Excellent location in Downtown Greensboro. They encourage you to browse and read anything. If you order food or drink from the bar, they will find you and bring the food to your location. There is an eclectic selecting of books, magazine and such. There is a large window in the storefront thay serves as the perfect place to sit and people watch. I'm thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

Yelp
According to their website, Scuppernong Books opened on December 21, 2013. Imagine opening a book store in the age of Amazon where Barnes & Noble is barely surviving and beloved bookstores are closing. You'd have to be crazy. Okay, add a nice coffee bar. A little less crazy. Oh add some nice snacks. Getting better. Next add fresh made Jerusalem Market dishes delivered to your seat at the bar. Okay, now add a great selection of local and nearby authors and mix in a signing and presentation area with authors around the world. Finally add in great craft beers and wines - ad occasional wine tastings. Scuppernong is a Carolina Sweet Grape, after all. Book clubs meet there. Real advice is given, and Steve and the staff are warm as can be. This is a great spot to find a book, a brew, and even some baklava. Plus you can order any book from their website or ask in store!

Yelp
Scuppernong is such an incredible asset to the Greensboro community. I can't imagine Greensboro without Scuppernong. It is the perfect friendly, cozy indie bookstore. You can hang out with friends or get work done, and they also put on great events. I've been to many poetry and fiction readings they've hosted. It's also great to be able to grab a drink while at an event. Just a great place with great staff!!

Yelp
This is a great place to sit and work. Very cozy and comfortable with a nice, homey feel. A great selection of USED and NEW books! The shop also has a cafe with coffee, tea, pastries and more but due to COVID, they're only serving to-go orders. If you're in downtown Greensboro, check it out!
google avatar

Shelby S.

Yelp
This is a great local bookstore in downtown Greensboro. They also serve coffee, tea, beer and wine. The workers and owners are friendly and helpful. They can even order you books!

Yelp
Nice store in a great location. Lots of current books along with many classics. Good collection of used books as well.
google avatar

Lan S.

Yelp
I'm not in Greensboro too often, but on a recent overnight visit I was glad to find this small indie bookstores downtown. It seems to be very community-oriented, with lots of local readings, hosting book clubs and so on. There's also a reasonably priced coffee bar that sells sandwiches and such as well. The service was friendly, and the owner seems very knowledgeable. Along with an intelligent selection of new and used books of a general nature, I was impressed to find a sizable collection of books at Scuppernong on Black Mountain College , the radical experimental college near my hometown of Asheville that was so important to the Abstract Impressionist art movement and even the Beats, along with other art and cultural movements during its relatively short history from the early 1930s to 1956. (There is now a museum on the college in Asheville, which is expanding to a larger location in late 2018. It's also possible at times to visit the two sites of Black Mountain College, one of which is now a boys' camp and the other remains a religious meeting and assembly site.) Greensboro is no Asheville (or Charlotte or Durham or Chapel Hill-Carrboro) yet, but bookstores like Scuppernong go a long way to turning a sprawling group of suburbs and strip centers into a real city.

Jes H.

Yelp
I stop by whenever I'm in Greensboro. It seems small at first but they pack a lot in there, I can usually find something on my TBR. I like that they have both new and used books, a little coffee shop, and a super cozy event space.

Yelp
Scuppernong is a locally owned and independent book store with a trendy downtown Greensboro vibe, yet a cozy, comfortable atmosphere to read, study, grade, or just simply take some time to get away from the world a while. Grab a latte, a glass of wine, or a cup of tea, and you are good to go! Books- The best thing about this book store is that it is well stocked for its size. It is divided by your standard fiction/nonfiction/children sections, and it has a huge used book selection in the back. Totally worth checking out! Quality books for a great price. What I think is really unique about Scupp. Books is lately they have been featuring a hand written "note" from someone who read the book and why they recommend it. I find this to be a very unique idea and some of the notes from readers really draw you in. In my opinion, books in general are meant to inspire, inform, or awaken some type of emotion within the mind or soul. I feel as though the 'note' facilities this enlightenment. Well done by the owners/staff! The store has a nice cafe area, where you can sit at the bar or the window seat, and order coffee, tea, a latte, OR you can order a glass (or bottle) of wine from a generous list of reds and whites... some of which are on tap! Wine on tap? Who knew!!! Craft beer is now also available, although I have not tried any yet. Perhaps my next trip back to GSO! This is my first time seeing a bookstore feature wine and beer....and such a plentiful selection, so I'm impressed and I think you would be too! Food is available as well (no worries, you won't go hungry haha). Make sure you take a walk to the very back of the store. Plenty of seating and a large table. They are are extremely community oriented and have a lot of local readings, book clubs, etc. I recall when I lived in Greensboro a few years ago, they had a celebration of Flannery O'Connor and her writings. She is one of my favorite authors and for the most part, underrated I think (at least up here in NJ). They featured her books in the front of the store and then had discussions on certain nights to commemorate her work and life. A very active, engaging, community book store. If you are in downtown GSO, this is worth the trip. Lovely.

Yelp
this place is so cute!! I was looking for a study spot down town and scuppernong is a gem. I had an iced caramel latte that was amazing.

Yelp
I am embarrassed that I have lived in the Piedmont Triad (W-S) for 10 years and I did not know this store even existed. Maybe it hasn't been open that long? In any event, browsing around downtown Greensboro, we happened upon this local, independent bookstore, which is a treasured part of a diminishing number of communities. Add to it a wine/coffee bar that serves food, too, and you have a winning combination. The space is big and light, with some cool seats in the front window area. They have a well-curated selection of local and national authors, as well as some really nice used books in the back (I picked up an "Oprah's Book Club" edition of Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections" I had been looking for). There was a discussion group happening in the back area while we were there, and some guys playing chess in the front. The only thing that would make this place better is if it was in Winston-Salem. I will be stopping back in this coming week to hear a book reading by one of my colleagues at Wake Forest. It's a shame he can't do that in Winston, too.

Yelp
not native to greensboro & this was suggested to me - such a cute place & the used book section is the best !!
google avatar

Em H.

Yelp
Fun little store to shop. I found my home in the used book section where I purchased "Waiting for Godot" & the play script for "A Streetcar Named Desire" for just $6 total. I also like my free bookmark! I am glad Greensboro finally has a good, solid place to buy books, read, & even have a small meal now. Thanks for being that place, Scuppernong!
google avatar

Pamela K.

Yelp
I dropped in to browse and walked out with several unique books, featuring backyard nature and some poetry. All interesting books that likely wouldn't have been featured in a big box store. Wonderful folks working there who love books. A neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Crystal T.

Yelp
Do you like wine, beer, or just a nice hot latte while you enjoy the enticing smell of books? If you replied yes, this is your place. The wine/draft bar is amazing as are the people who run it. Maybe it's your first time or your millionth, they'll never run out of suggestions. You'll find books from local writers to nationally acclaimed NYT authors to everything in between. It's all kept amazingly clean and organized. With a nice relaxing seating area in the back unless you'd like to sit at the bar and enjoy a light snack. This is bookstore for the community that gives to the community.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
I ordered some books through here, and they had the books here quicker and with better customer service than Amazon. I picked them up directly from the store, and was completely mesmerized by the interior. A small coffee shop, meeting area, and cozy nooks make the place warm and inviting. Not to mention the thousands of books that I could have browsed for hours if I hadn't been there on my lunch break. I will definitely revisit so I can enjoy this charming store at my leisure and soak in the atmosphere.

Yelp
This is a nice local bookstore that sells both retail priced new books as well as used books. As Holly K noted, it is quite a bit larger than it looks on the inside compared to the outside, and they do have quite a good selection here. They have chairs and tables to study at, and they also have a little outdoor patio where you can enjoy your book in the sunshine. It also has a little cafe where you can get drinks, order sandwiches, and order some wine. They have a nice selection of stuff, however I opted to just drink some iced tea so I can't speak for the rest of their offerings. One of the owners here, (John I think) seemed to be very passionate about the store and had a lot to say about the community here, and was more than happy to talk about some of the clubs they knew about and upcoming events going on. However, I wish this place was easier to navigate. It doesn't seem to be accessible to people with mobility impairments or people who might be obese which is a huge bummer for me because I really want to give this place 5 stars. The passageways are very narrow, with very little room to spare, and that makes it very difficult to move at times, even for me and I do not have a mobility impairment, nor am I obese. Still, it's a bookstore, and a pretty good one at that. Accessibility issues aside, I really enjoy coming here.

Yelp
Came across this nice bookstore a few days back while strolling on elm street. This place has a very nice collection of books and a cafe. Perfect place to spend a lazy evening.

Yelp
This is our favorite book store. (SorryNotSorry Malaprops.) Friendly, helpful staff. Nice selections of very tasty coffee, wine and beer available to sip as you browse. Comfortable seating. There is nothing to wish for.

Yelp
Bookstores you want to feel warm and inviting. You sit in them for hours and pick new adventures. I was really excited to find one with coffee/cafe inside. Get a cup pick some books and pick several to take home. I asked upon entering if I could get a cup and take it with me while I walked around and started to pick out books. I was told, no the policy, so as not to ever remove your mask, is you can only get a coffee as you are leaving. Many establishments have needed to balance, removing your mask only as you sip, putting the mask back on, and then removing again only as you sip. Adults are capable of being adults. This policy of only being allowed a beverage when you leave didn't feel welcoming. Neither did some of the sections. On a positive note, the used book section is wonderful and well setup. I left with two selections, one new and one used, as I really like to support book stores. Balance is really important and for my two cents, could go a long way here.
google avatar

Holly K.

Yelp
Whats not to love about a local book store? The inside is bigger than you would think if you were just walking by. They even have a fairly large area in the back with tables where people can quietly read or study. This book store also has wine, so that is always a plus. I haven't tried any of the food offerings here yet but when I went in around lunch time there were quite a few people enjoying some tasty looking sandwiches. They also host a variety of events here including a zen meditation group (thats how tranquil it is here). As others have said the prices are standard, basically the price that you actually see on the back of the book is the price you pay. With certain online retailers paying that price sometimes seem to be a thing of the past, but supporting local, and the awesome atmosphere here, makes those few extra dollars worth it.

Yelp
Great local bookstore with a simple menu of delicious items to snack on for breakfast or lunch while reading a great book. They offer a huge selection of wine and beer. Perfect for an afternoon getaway to work on a special project in a quiet and comfortable atmosphere, or to meet friends for a drink after a long day. Love their selection of books, their breakfast/lunch menu and their tea list. This place is great and really cares about their patrons.

Yelp
My favorite place to go downtown for a good book and tea/coffee. Very good chill spot for the downtown area. My sister and I go there to study and catch up once a week. Worth checking out!
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
I love the intimacy of a local book store and Scuppernong captures the best of what a local bookstore should be. Of course they have books. They offer quality over quantity and while the prices may be higher than online options, you can't have a coffee, meta, beer, or glass of wine while browsing the book shelves online. Being in Scuppnong is about the experience. It's relaxed and welcoming. There's a feeling of community here whether you came to get a book, browse a bit, sit and read while having a drink, to eat lunch, or to hear a reading. This is a wonderful literary oasis.

Yelp
Stopped here during our trip to Greensboro. Nice independent bookstore downtown. They have both new and used books. Nice community feel with meeting area. They have a small bar with both wine and beer on tap as well as some muffins and such.

Yelp
I used to live in Greensboro about 6 years ago. I was in town recently visiting my daughter in Winston Salem. This bookstore used to be favorite for hard to find books and great reads. I drove 15 miles to stop in buy a book and grab a coffee. I love to support independent businesses. The older gentleman greeted me when I came in and I told him I wanted to browse for a book and buy a coffee. He directed to a guess appeared to be a makeshift coffee counter. The man behind the counter was a hippie type that did not even greet me even though he was doing nothing at all. When I finally got his attention I asked for a black coffee. He proceeded to the inform me he needed to see my vaccination card. I told him I did not have it with me but I was fully vaccinated and had a mask on. He rudely said I cannot serve you. I offered to pull up the proof on the Walgreens website where I was vaccinated. Again he refused to serve me. He spoke to me with a condescending, self righteous attitude. Shocked, I left and went to Green Bean down the street where they treated me very well and while I had no book, I had fabulous coffee from a great staff who were masked like me.

Yelp
I love a good book store! Came here for for the first time on Saturday for the Ta-Nehisi Coates book discussion and fell in love! First of all the discussion was a great meeting of the minds. It was refreshing to be engaged in such a thought provoking, timely conversation about the book. So I started there because as I was sitting there I thought was a wonderful establishment to host an event on such a controversial book... it must be an awesome place! So yeah, in addition to the intellectual draw of the place, the coffee is pretty amazing and it's been a long time since I've been to a bookstore that served wine.. an added bonus. The prices are reasonable and they even have a punch card for the drip coffee. I just wish they had better, freshly delivered baked goods! Otherwise, it was such a pleasant experience I went back this morning for more coffee.
