How Buffalo’s Beef on Weck Became an Icon in Upstate New York | Eater

"A downtown sushi spot whose chef reimagined the beef on weck as a sushi roll after combining leftover carpaccio-style beef trimmings with sushi rice and horseradish, creating a hybrid that recalls the sandwich’s flavors in a sushi format." - Jessica Kelly

Our order taker was attentive. The complimentary grilled pita bread and hummus was good. The ambience was relaxed and pleasant. My lunch special grilled Branzino with spinach was tasty and perfectly portioned for my appetite. My sister liked her grilled sardines and lobster bisque which has some lobster meat although the soup was not as thick. My Nay’s crab cake could have been appetizingly presented with a few green leaves to make the plate not look plain. My hubby’s steak sandwich hardly had any meat. It was all bread. Very disappointing!! This was what pulled this down to a 3 rating.

The food was surprisingly good, you can tell the ingredients are fresh farm/sea to table. The lunch menu offer a bang for your buck.

First time here. Great place. They start you off with hummus and warm bread. Nice owner and staff. Good comes right out. We enjoyed oysters which were big and great. We also ordered crab cake, lobster roll and fries, lychee martini, and what not in the picture old fashion and shrimp tacos! We found this place on our way home to Jersey! Grateful

Owner Giannis is very nice, friendly, and funny. Foods are excellent. Tried few different types of fish for 3 visits within 2 weeks. All dishes taste great for me and my wife. Highly recommended👍👍👍

We did a dine-in on Fri at 11:10am. It's across the street from the shopping center the Gardens. You will need to do street parking. People were coming and going so I don't think it will be a problem. We ordered calamari as an appetizer and Tuna and salmon. The calamari was very tender and it had slight bread crumb coating. It wasn't crispy but I preferred a tender calamari. The tuna was over a farmers salad. I asked for rare and it came out rare. It was fresh tasting. Not fishy. There was a lot of different things in the salad which was great. My lunch mate had the salmon which was medium. It came over a bed of Roman beans. The salmon was fire roasted and not dry. It had a lemon oil sauce. The beans were very tender. They also gave us Complementary naan and humus. I rarely eat up the bread but we ate the whole thing. The naan was so soft inside and nicely grilled outside. The hummus probably just came out of the refrigerator. I prefer a warm hummus but it was good. Overall pricing for lunch was reasonable, portion size very good and taste was great.

Lovely find, cozy restaurant. Great service, like used to be in old times, casual though very professional at the same time. The restaurant on Friday was full, but the wait time for meal was short, we also got a complimentary appetizer, which was a surprise: hummus with warm (!) pita bread. The food was very fresh: excellent & huge portions too lobster rolls were delicious, Kobe Beef Chopped Steak was very tasty and juicy, fries and fingerling potatoes just great, shrimp pasta had a generous amount of shrimp. We absolutely loved it and will be back when in the area.

Sea Bar is a quaint Mediterranean location. It's the perfect size and atmosphere to eat and drink well and still be able to enjoy the people you are with. If you have ever doubted if fresh herbs, salt, and pepper were all that was needed to make food taste good, Sea Bar will answer that question, and it's a yes. Our server Vanessa was also the bartender, and the drinks were great, not too strong but definitely not weak. We had the Sea Bream and Tuna for entrees, grilled sardines, octopus, and the grouper soup (it's not called grouper soup, but i can't remember the name) for the appetizers.

Google
The food was excellent. There is only one server. We went there for lunch on early Saturday. We were the only group of 9pax. Then it gets busy. The waitress was patient and attentive too. I would recommend this restaurant. The price is reasonable with quite a generous portion. Most importantly everything was very fresh. Will definitely go back again.

Yelp
Okay, this place is a gem, This is my second time coming here and everything is well prepared, fresh and delicious. They start your meal off with fresh grilled pita/bread and a yummy hummus. To start I had the chargrilled octopus, very good. For entree- Last time I got the full bronzino, so good. This time I got the lobster roll with fries (I asked to sub for truffle fries and there was no upcharge!) They also have a very good steamed broccoli as a side with some sundried tomato's. I ended with the Fig parfait which was light and not too sweet. The place isn't big, so I do recommend a reservation. I will be back!

Yelp
Service was awesome the person who helped me was so sweet. Downside to this night there was a weird smell inside this place and I think it was the cleaning products mixed with the smell of food so I decided not to sit down and just order take out. The way this place is presented online you would think there was going to be something that I had to come back here for but I was disappointed nothing special just ok. Parking is good because it's located across from a shopping center.

Yelp
Food good, nice ambiance, quick service. Keep eating, keep living!! On to the next one!!!

Yelp
Wonderful food, especially the lobster pasta, the lobster rolls and the tuna tartare and incredible friendly and attentive service. The ambience is cozy and moderately noisy when the restaurant is full.
google avatar

Yelp
Lobster roll isn't as meaty as last time and too much mayonnaise. Fish soup terrific. Lemon sole nice and broccoli vibrant green retaining that inviting crunch.

Audeth D.

Yelp
I went here for late lunch. I had for starters the chicken wings and the popcorn shrimp. It was sooooo salty I was afraid to order anything else. I ordered the soup and specifically asked for no salt and that was ok. The drinks were good. Place is small & cozy.

Yelp
I got a Groupon gift for my birthday. It was a prefix meal deal consisting 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and a bottle of wine. Never used Groupon for a restaurant before, so we were a bit skeptical at first. First thing as soon as we arrived, we were greeted by Kristi. She is very attentive, warm, and friendly. She explained to us the menu and how Groupon deal works. She recommended great choices. Food, service, ambiance were all great! Very grateful to be able to dine in at Sea Bar and will definitely go back!

Yelp
Seafood plateau was good portion for the price. Ambience was really. We've also tired the squid and calamari which was good. The lobster pasta is a must get!

Deema I.

Yelp
Ordered a branzino filet and grouper. The branzino was not seasoned at all, so nothing you can't make yourself. The grouper was better, small portion for the price. Was deciding between this and Cheesecake Factory for an after shopping lunch, Was excited to find an independently owned place, but sadly not special.

Yelp
Modern ambiance, and a great selection of cognac but the food and service left something to be desired. My fish was overcooked but no one checked on us until my date had already eaten half his meal. At that point I really didn't want to order again, and try my luck with it being prepared correctly, so I skipped it. The oysters and clams on the half shell we started with were well shucked and very good. The millefeuille dessert was okay but not actually a flaky pastry like I expected it to be. The best part of the meal was the cognac I had after dinner, which cost more than the branzino whole fish entree.

Yelp
Cute spot with modern decor and friendly staff. The food was pretty good, so I will definitely keep this as a local option.

Yelp
There was a buy one get one free deal on Ubereats so I decided to give Seabar a try and opted for their Lobster roll. It was pretty plain but good: lobster & lettuce on a buttered bread. Fries were still crisp when they arrived. No complaints.

Yelp
Went on a Monday night and we were greeted by the friendly staff and seated promptly. The food that we ordered was all quite yummy! The standout being the veggie chips! Branzino and shrimp tacos were good too. The restaurant ambiance is nice..good spot for a casual dinner or a sit down lunch. Overall a solid spot!
google avatar

Suzie S.

Yelp
The food here was pretty good, it's a cute little spot with a full bar and few tables. Parking is a little hard but definitely Worth going. Our waitress was super nice and attentive. The hummus and pita starter was soooo good. One of the best hummus I've had, couldn't stop eating it. The pita was perfectly hot and crispy! Truffle fries were delicious crispy and fresh. Just the right amount of truffle and salt. Wasn't a big fan of the calamari, texture wise, was not a fan. Little bit chewy and the breading was not crispy at all. The octopus was tender but the sauce was a little too sour. We also got an entree each. Delicious all in all and would certainly come back. They also have a great happy hour menu.

Yelp
Boy am I surprised. Expected what was shown by others and also from the business pictures of their lobster rolls. But it seems like they're falling on hard times. Barely any lobster meat and also meat used are leftover shredded bits. Taste wise they're fine, nothing amazing or bad about them. Fries were decently crispy and seasoned. But not worth the price for the meager amount of lobster provided.

Yelp
Had a wonderful dinner, beet salad and grilled tuna, service and food were excellent. The ambiance is spare but cozy and modern. I appreciated the warm toast and pita served with hummus for dipping which was brought to the table when we sat down. The waitress also brought a bottle of tap water to the table which I appreciated. All in all, great food, great service and reasonable prices. Who could ask for more?

Yelp
Came in today and it was a packed house. It's not usually his crazy when we come in here which gives me time to write a review while I wait or eat. They gave us an estimate of 15 minutes and we sat down in about 20. Because it was so packed service seemed slow. There was a table of two who came in after us but they seemed to have gotten their food faster and have already left. Maybe they ordered something that doesn't need the grill. The waiter apologized for the long wait because their grill was so backed up for being so packed. They updated the menu. We ordered as soon as we sat down since I perused the menu while we waited. We're about 20 minutes into our wait after we ordered, so I told them to bring out whatever is ready. We've received the flash fried calamari first and it's super tasty. The shrimp pasta and the fish tacos came out 5 minutes after and the shrimp pasta has a super generous serving of shrimp! Then our fishes came and they were grilled to perfection. We had the branzino to be safe & and new fish called the Fargri. The fargri did not disappoint. It's actually super similar to the branzino. We ordered fries and green beans for the kids and we gobbled it up. Eventually the complimentary hummus and bread came. Hummus here tastes way better than store bought. The meal was great! We ate super fast, a little bit more savage than usual. The waiter even came to apologize for the wait today which would've been my only complaint. I still think fish tacos is my ultimate go to here. That was my favorite part of the meal. We're finishing up full and happy even though it's 9:30 PM on a week night past the kids bedtime when I'm asking for the check. til next time sea bar! Oh btw after our 4th time here, I learned that they are on Groupon! So today we got $30 off our meal and that was one entree so it was extra worth it.. and I will definitely purchase it again.

Yelp
We came here for Father's Day, Vanessa was our server and she was amazing. The food was wonderful, Everything that we got. My favorite was definitely the fried shrimp with green sauce. Having said that everything in my photos was great. The ambience was OK, in that it was very loud. There was also a family with a baby crying, which irritated my kids. I would recommend doing something to improve the acoustics, especially for customers who are sound sensitive.

Yelp
Even though we just had dinner somewhere else, we came here based on our friend's recommendation. Loved the place immediately before I even walked through the front door. I love how the sign looked above the clear glass windows where you can see the entire restaurant from the street. I love the little raw bar area where you can see all the fresh seafood on display. The four of us sat down and started going over their menu. Start I had one of the Margarita cocktails and it was light and refreshing. Since we have just had dinner, we decided to go with a few appetizers to get a little taste. The truffle fries were my favorite. They were light and crispy with a nice dipping g sauce on the side. I also like their calamari. The breading has good flavors and the calamari was soft and juicy. We can't leave without ordering a dessert. Not sure exactly what we ordered but it looked good and tasted delicious. Overall our experience was great. We need to come back for a full formal dinner!

Yelp
Sea Bar is a great seafood restaurant in Great Neck. Seafood is Sea bar's specialty but the lamb shank with orzo is amazing
google avatar

Dennis L.

Yelp
Seafood tower are of poor quality, containing tiny mussels and clams without real meat and a few crawfishes, which are unsanitary and cheap. Not worthy of the expensive price.

Yelp
Will return. Simple and pleasant deco. Single bathroom with changing table. Feels female touches. Female serving staff. The few staff in the kitchen seems women too. Reportedly, it owns by the same person who has the Greek Xpress at 37 Great Neck Road. About ten tables and a bar. While having our dinner, there are take outs. Good stem - Grilled Sardine - excellent, just too big portion - Grilled octopus - so so - Sea bream on the bone - great Street parking, which is easy. Oh, love their pepper mill - will get one myself.

Yelp
Our first meal at this establishment was good. We started off with raw oysters which came served in your typical oyster tray over ice. The oyters were fresh but not the large type that I am accustomed to, although they were fresh. grilled sardines were also good, but again three different size sardines in the plate, the smallest of which was probably too small to serve. They were tasty and grilled well on an open flame. The Lobster roll was very good, and the pasta with lobster was also very good. The star of the meal was the Bronzino, which I opted to have whole. This was by far the best prepared dish!
google avatar

Yelp
3.5 stars overall. I rounded up for great service. This is a fairly new restaurant in Great Neck which opened during the Pandemic. Just minutes from the LIRR and across a busy shopping plaza. Street parking only. Every main entree on the dinner menu was practically seafood and/or Greek by design. Three meat proteins are offered so do browse the menu before going, especially if you're not feeling seafood. They offer salads, desserts, plenty of cocktails and small appetizers. The bartender does a good pour as I enjoyed my drink of choice, Negroni. Made right with one giant ice cube. The waitress was pleasant and checked in on us a few times. She took our order without writing it down. And she got it all correct! The menu has a variety of options - raw bar, hot food and sides. Onto the food: - beet salad with a creamy garlic topping was really good but I wished for more garlic flavor. I just love garlic. - grilled octopus - great char and good plating. Just a tad too well done for my taste but flavors were good. Especially the red onions paired with. - Tuna tar tar was the stand out appetizer topped with avocado - the Chilean Sea Bass had a refreshing lemon/citrus finish. The grilled vegetables that came with the entree were excellent. - Greek fries served in a mini pan. Sinfully delicious. Tables were nicely spaced and the restaurant decor was very comfortable. This was a Thursday night prime dinner hour and it was not crowded. A little tweaks needed on the food and it'll be a much more solid spot.

Yelp
The grill fish are number one favorite. Pasta is very good with friendly team . So good to stay at my window seat . Prefect day

Yelp
Came here for mother's day and it was really good. Especially since my mother in law or sister in law accidentally made a reservation for 4 instead of 5, my boy counts as a person even if he's a toddler! He definitely enjoyed himself. Great meal and we all loved our food. Nice place. I'd come here again and recommend it. Lobster was good and I rarely eat lobster.

Nicolette T.

Yelp
When this place first opened up, the food was good but there was a bit of an odor in the restaurant and I stopped going for a while. Recently went there and the odor was Gone! the food is still amazing. The staff is friendly and attentive. The drinks are the absolutely amazing especially their mules. The seafood is fresh and everything is seasoned well.

Yelp
I had a lovely weekday lunch here. The lunch specials were a pleasant surprise as well as the robust cocktail menu. I enjoyed my branzino special ($17.50). The side spinach was good but a little salty. The fish tacos were surprisingly large, though I'd do a little less on the sauce. We also went for the 1/2 dozen little neck clams, which had a nice presentation. The space is very casual, and I like the large windows that bring in some nice light. Our waitress was really nice and cheerful. Music was a little all over the place but made for some amusing conversations.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was excellent and I suggest you try the ted sangria. The mushroom ravioli surprisingly good flavors. Also the steak tacos are really good.

Yelp
I have eaten at this restaurant several times now and have only had excellent meals. Yesterday, I went for the week day lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The food was wonderful and the staff very attentive. Although, a small space the seating and spacing makes it feel larger.

Yelp
Enjoyed my shrimp tacos! The tacos were very tasty and a good sized portion. The service was spot on and the decor is casual and comfortable.

Yelp
Met a friend here for dinner last week . We had reservations , but there were tables available on a Tuesday night . That being said it is relatively small, so on a weekend there may be a wait . There is a small bar that looked like a nice place to wait . It's a casual but also cool vibe good for friends , family and dates . It feels modern. Service was lovely . Our server was able to answer our questions and was very familiar with the menu . We were not in the mood to rush and ordered as we went along . Sangria was delicious ! and we even got " one on the house " We shared the veggie chips .We were served crunchy thin pieces of zucchini and eggplant . They were on a Taziki sauce that was tangy and a perfect compliment . The grilled octopus was tasty and citrusy . The cook of tentacles was perfect but body slightly chewy . we shared a perfectly cooked Branzino. We chose to have it taken off bone , but you can have it whole . Dessert was a crunchy and perfectly sweet pistachio baklava ! Plating on all was beautiful ! I would highly recommend a trip to Sea Bar if you're in the neighborhood. If not it's worth a ride . I came from Wantagh but my friend came from Riverdale.

Yelp
What a great little spot for all of your Mediterranean culinary. Yum Yum. I would suggest trying everything on the menu. Great service we definitely come back.

Yelp
I've been ordering delivery from Sea bar for a while now. The last few times the portions have definitely gotten much smaller. Ok no biggie I still enjoyed the quality of the food, until yesterday this is what I received.... (picture below). I ordered a Connecticut roll, there was no butter at all, and just few skimpy dry sad looking pieces of lobster. Really disappointing especially for the price.. $30.. not worth it.

Inbar K.

Yelp
Great food, hospitality, and happy hour! Thank you Giannis for mixing the best drinks:)
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
This restaurant is right near the great neck lirr and has quick service! The Connecticut lobster roll is really good as are the fries, would definitely order both again. The ahi tuna was really disappointing. The flavor and texture were not great. The spinach was soggy and not well-flavored. Because the lobster roll and fries were so good though, I'd definitely eat here again and try other things!

Yelp
Nice cozy seafood restaurant located near the LIRR. Good food and knowledgeable staff.

Yelp
As a lobster fan, I'm glad that Sea Bar serves many lobster dishes. I dream of the lobster pasta: lots of lobster in a tomato vodka- ish sauce. I've also tried the crab meat stuffed lobster-- lots of buttery real crabmeat, not just bread stuffing. I prefer the cold lobster roll over the warm one, at least for takeout because the hot butter can overcook the tender lobster when you let it sit too long. Maybe the hot lobster roll is different in the restaurant, but I've not tried it. The branzino is good, with crispy skin. As for the ahi tuna with Asian sauce: good fresh tuna but I prefer a more traditional Asian sesame sauce. This has tomato and is not that Asian. Same thing with the Chilean sea bass: need a miso marinade instead of just grilled. East Pacific in Staten Island makes the most perfect miso Chilean sea bass. If Sea Bar makes a miso Chilean sea bass, I would definitely order it. The Roman beans are the most wonderful side you can get here. I often order another dish so I can get the Roma beans as a side, otherwise it is quite expensive for a side.

Yelp
Going to go 4.5 stars here Came here to celebrate my "monthiversary" with my bf. (YES WE CELEBRATE EVERY MONTH!) I've been wanting to check this place out since they opened. We started with some drinks, I got a Hibiscus Collins and my bf got a blue moon. We got the tuna tartare and lobster roll for our appetizer. Both were amazing!!! I'm not sure what was on the bottom of the tuna tartare, it was lemony and amazing. The Connecticut warm lobster roll was SO. GOOD. I haven't had a warm lobster roll in awhile and it was stuffed with lobster meat. Also came with fries which was nice. For entrees, I got the Chilean sea bass with fresh herbs and cream and my bf got the baked Maine cod. I didn't know the sauce for the Chilean sea bass would be a cream like that. I was thinking it would be more like a creamy sauce, not a thick cream. I would've opted to get something else if I knew! It was a tiny but salty for my taste but my bf really enjoyed it. The baked Maine cod was a littleeee over cooked but I liked the sauce. It made it taste better! Both dishes come with a side, we both got the grilled veggies for an extra dollar, which was worth it! Will definitely come back here- loved the appetizers. Will probably try something new next time for my entree! Great service as well
google avatar

Yelp
My family and I came here on Friday for lunch. We had the whole restaurant all to ourselves, as no one else was there. We ordered the warm lobster rolls and the lobster pastas. They have a lunch special and many different seafood + non-seafood items. The warm lobster roll was a great size and it came with fries. The fries were very subpar but lobster roll was good! I definitely think it could have used more flavors/seasoning though. The lobster pasta was the highlight. They gave a good amount of chopped up lobster and the pasta was delicious. It was very filling so I was able to take half on the go. Environment was very clean and waiter was friendly! Not sure if I will come back anytime soon as I've tried better lobster rolls but if I do, I would come back for the lobster pasta.

Yelp
Oysters were super fresh, followed by Ahi Tuna Tartare. Definitely get the Sea Bar Martini. Fish tacos were out of this world. Great service. Nice atmosphere. Perfect! Will definitely return.

Yelp
Soooo.... Have been 3 times. The first two were excellent. Good service, delicious food. Last night, not so much. Worth trying, prices are fair and it's a cute, comfortable neighborhood spot. I can't comment on most of the menu as I'm gluten free but they offer cucumber chips instead of the pita so the hummus can be enjoyed. Props for that. The tomato salad is fabulous. Last night we made a reservation for two and sat at a table for four in the corner. The restaurant was largely empty. The waiter asked us to move to two-top that would have put us essentially in another couple's space. We politely declined, would have left. When we finished eating, most tables were all still vacant. This was an unnecessary unpleasantness. I ordered the Faroe Island salmon, medium. I had had it on a previous visit. I don't think it was Faroe Island, much lighter in color. I also think it had been frozen, the outer portion was firm to the point of solid, mushy, not flaky on the inside, tasteless. I cook a lot of salmon at home, fresh fish is never like that. Again, possibly a bad night, wouldn't discourage anyone from trying them, but last visit disappointing.

Yelp
A relatively new spot in Great Neck and finally decided to give them a try. They mostly have seafood but also have options such as a burger for those who aren't seafood people. Our waitress was super kind and gave great reccs! The octopus and oysters were pretty fresh as well. Would come again:)

Janet J.

Yelp
love love love, no complaints. maybe serve the bread sooner, otherwise yummy. Drinks are great, service wonderful.

Yelp
We came here on a Friday night and were glad we made reservations because this place is small as it only has about 10-12 tables and was packed. We ordered the grilled octopus for an appetizer, and it was a good-sized piece and tasted good. For dinner, we ordered the lobster pasta and the branzino. The pasta tasted very good, and I could've ordered another dish of it. Only two things could've made that dish better. One of them was more food and two if it came with some bread to sop up the sauce. The branzino also tasted fresh and was a good size. You can get it with or without the bones in it, and we suggest without them. The service was good and we would go back. They also offered us a free dessert that they said was because of the commotion, but we didn't get it because we had dessert waiting for us at home. We still don't know what commotion they were talking about but we both said we should've taken it after we had already left, but oh well, maybe next time.

Yelp
Super good! Had the fish tacos which were out of this world, with the fish perfectly cooked, still a bit translucent, the taco shell was grilled to perfection, all topped with a wonderful chipotle sauce and served hot. I also had the grilled octopus and it was delicious, served with red onions, capers and vinaigrette. Instead of wine, I had one of the special cocktail that my waiter took great care of fixing with fresh ingredients. The service was very friendly and professional. They serve the aperitifs with triangles of grilled pitas. I swear the chef know how to grill! Amended to 5 stars, went back for lunch and had the salmon burger, and the french fries were hot and crispy served with chipotle mayonnaise. Service is still super good and so pleasant!

Yelp
Girlfriend and I stopped in at someone's recommendation. We're also always looking for new restaurants that have gluten-free options (my girlfriend has Celiac). We were immediately greeted by a strong odor of bleach. Obviously, the tables had just been cleaned. I am 1000% in favor of cleanliness, but it was hard to focus on my meal when the place smelled like a middle school cafeteria. Our server was friendly and cute. Our meal was...a little disappointing. We both ordered drinks (which were good). I ordered lobster bisque for an appetizer (also good; creamy without congealing). My girlfriend's fish was average, nothing to write home about. I ordered the raw platter for my main course and it was just WAY too fishy. I wasn't even given any utensils to help pry open the crawfish. We probably won't be coming back, unless we happen to be in the neighborhood.
