Cafe Tropical Employees Are Missing Thousands in Paychecks - Eater LA

"The Dragon, Koreatown’s longstanding Korean-Chinese restaurant, served its last plates of jajangmyeon over the weekend after being in business for over 40 years. The restaurant opened in 1980 and has been a go-to for gatherings, celebrations, and more." - Rebecca Roland

18 Amazing Takeout and Delivery Options in LA’s Koreatown | Eater LA

"Korean-Chinese takeout is as traditional Korean as it gets, with jjajangmyeon (Korean-Chinese-style black bean noodles), beef with green onions and sweet and sour pork all major hits. The Dragon (or Yong-Goong, as it’s known to Koreans) is an LA banquet institution and is keeping the lights on by moving takeout orders." - Euno Lee

Amazing Chinese food! I came back and ordered Egg Fu Yung and Shanghai Chow Mein. Both excellent and super awesome old school! Great stuff! Previous visit: I’ve been here before and don’t know why I never returned till today. The wonton soup is flavorful. Like as if they used MSG. Remember, MSG is not bad for you. It’s a lie that it is. Look up what George Takei has to say about MSG. I’m not saying they use it here, but the food is amazing! The wontons are great and the soup is packed with meat and veggies. The chow fun is spectacular. Packed full of meat and sprouts and not much onion which is great! So good! The orange chicken rules! Perfectly battered and tangy! So delicious! The tea is great too! Service is efficient. They have a parking lot!

Plates are abundant and flavorful. Prices $13-20 each. As a health inspector I came to this restaurant about two months ago, and as it was so clean, I said I have to come here to try. Fortunately they did not recognize me lol. Then here we are. We ordered walnut shrimp, eggplant, seafood rice, bean curd beef. Everything was fresh and good. Attention was ok, you know they are like in a rush, but it’s ok, really focused in what they are doing it’s like cultural. We enjoyed the food, and we paid for five plates around $80 including tip. We’ll be back.

Got the House Special Chow Fun and Walnut Shrimp. Very Delicious. Each dish is huge so you may have to share, so bring a family member or friend with you!

Portions are huge! The broccoli and beef were really good! Family style servings. Parking lot is small and compact.

Google
Had an amazing meal here! Service was nice and fast and the food was amazing! Being picky with orange chicken loved it here. They give you a large serving of white rice and the food is in a sharing portion. Recommended 100% Can’t wait to come here again in a few weeks!

Google
Lo mein used spaghetti noodles. Looking at photos it seems like that isn’t normal. Very bland The chicken with spicy garlic sauce was good though. Still seeking good Chinese takeout that doesn’t require a drive to sgv…

Pamela

Google
Delicious food— got two dishes—1. clams and 2. honey walnut shrimp mayonnaise (bf LOVED this) — all came with steamed rice. Convenient parking in plaza. Had a good amount of seating.

Yelp
I forgot to take picture before we started serving. But it was great. We ordered Teriyaki chicken(bit gamey for me but great with hot sauce), Kang pao chicken( you can't go wrong with this one), cod fish in black bean sauce( ultimate), and shrimp chop sui( we just added veggie dish just to make vegetarians happy)in catering size. It was tiny bit tight for 40 people but we made it. We had one serving left over. THE BEST MOTHERS DAY COMPANY LUNCH WE HAD SO FAR

Yelp
This place gets five stars for a lot of reasons... 1 their house special chow mein is delicious and their salt and pepper chicken wings as well are a delight. 2 you have to love a place like this that still does a lunch special 3 every order comes with egg drop soup 4 They are fast with food and service.they definitely know how to make use of their wok back there. 5 Asian uncle smokes cigarette in alley with paper hat. (Quality indicator) 6 if you know you know... you have pictures of all the food faded from the years and modest furniture you are in the right spot. A happy place in a strip mall on Vermont

Yelp
If you are local to the restaurant and don't feel like driving to downtown, Sea Dragon is an okay alternative. We ordered to-go and service was fast and friendly, however, packaging needs improvement. There was oil everywhere and the bottom of one of the containers melted off due to no lining of any sort. It was a messy surprise that we were not very happy about. We ordered the following: 1. Porkchop w/spicy salt - This one was a miss this time. Tasted like they refried leftovers. It was okay last time, but not sure what happened this time. 2. Chinese broccoli w/garlic sauce - A tad bit overcooked, but still very tasty. Seasoning was good and not overly salty. 3. Shrimp w/spicy salt - Just okay. Seasoning was good, but was also a bit overcooked so it was dry. 4. Fish fillet in black bean sauce - It was tasty and the fish was nice (not fishy), but too oily. We order this dish at Chinese restaurants all the time, and we've never had it this oily. 5. Eggplant w/garlic sauce - It was okay. Very oily. 6. Shrimp fried rice - Very delicious and seasoned well. Would definitely order this again.

Yelp
$$$ but this is post Covid we have to remember, these people took a loss and need us to pay them back. Other than that, the portions are huge. You order a Chow Mein to go and you get home to find the Styrofoam container busting out on all sides there is so much food. I got those General Pao Chicken, which is like an orange chicken but better and it's lasted several days. I also got a deep fried spicy pork that is still tasty because I'm still eating it. And I got Egg Foo Young not like any that I've seen before. This was teaming with veggies, meat and a gravy poured over it.

Yelp
Hole in the wall with an extensive menu with all the classics. Everything's around $15, serves 4 easily and is delicious. The servers are incredibly kind and were making jokes with us. They even brought us the biggest bowl of fresh rice without us needing to ask (was built into the price!) As someone who's not Christian I've come on both Christmas Day and Easter - which has been a coincidental pleasure. Love me a spot that's open always.
google avatar

Yelp
Lunch does not include soup. Only rice. This differs from what multiple websites say. Otherwise, this is a strip mall Chinese restaurant with decent food and good prices. No atmosphere to speak of but the food is terrific

Andy H.

Yelp
Good food and good portions. The ladies who work here are also very nice. Open till a bit late as well.

Yelp
Affordable and yummy Chinese food! If you are looking for a last minute dinner/ take out for your family or friends, I would recommend checking this place out. They do open early! You can feed 4-6 people under 100 bucks! I highly recommend the orange peak Mongolian beef, their house special chow mein and cod fillet in their sweet and sour sauce! Lilly is my girl that always takes my family's order and is always hospitable whenever we see her! Say hi to Lilly! She will take care of you!

Yelp
There are some good reasons to eat here: you're exhausted; you lack transportation to leave the area for good Chinese food; you lack a flux capacitor to go back in time to the days when you could easily get chop suey and egg fu yung. If any of that describes you, this is your joint. Chinese broccoli is just broccoli, with minced garlic. I'd say "and not much else going on," but more accurate would be "and nothing else going on." The egg fu yung is in a bland cornstarch goo, which is really quite charming, and it has a nice crunch, which is more than I can say for the rubbery shrimp that surrounded it. But the shrimp was plentiful, and they did give fortune cookies with the check (but not jasmine tea).

Yelp
Met up with my childhood school mate for dinner to play catch-up. I let him choose where to grub and he says he swears by this place, so, off we go! It wasn't busy so there was no wait time. My friend got there a few minutes before I did so he was already able to secure a table and put in the orders of food he recommends. Although there were a lot of to-go and pickup orders, our food came through in no time. CHINESE BROCCOLI WITH OYSTER SAUCE: If it were pasta, I would say this was cooked to a perfect al dente. It wasn't tough, nor was it too soft. It's as simple as it's going to get: steamed (I'm assuming) and topped with oyster sauce. The veg tasted great and the oyster sauce does elevate the flavor. PAN FRIED SHRIMP AND WALNUT WITH MAYONNAISE SAUCE: I'm going to be honest and say I'm not normally a fan of this dish. Past experience dictate it's just too rich and the batter tends to be too thick. But not this place: the batter was light and crispy, the mayo wasn't too rich or heavy and the shrimp was a generous size. I couldn't stop poppin' them in! It was a subtle rich and savory but not filling or heavy tasting. (Did that make sense?) In other words: GET THIS! CHICKEN WITH CURRY SAUCE: My choice because at anytime I try a new Chinese restaurant, this would be my must try (and one of the dishes I use to judge the place!) This was really delicious! The sauce was really (although not quite) close to the one from my favorite place. I would attribute that to the fillers (a little heavy on the green peppers and onions - those two did a number on the flavor profile.) But still much better than average. I would most likely get this again. FOOD: 4. SERVICE: 4. Not a lot of interaction but they didn't really follow through either (I needed a water refill and that took a minute.) But they were friendly when we had our run-in. VALUE: 4. Fair for what you get. PARKING: Small private lot shared with other businesses. I believe street parking is also available. Not an issue for a Monday night dinner run. OVERALL: 4. I would return for all three dishes, but will most likely try other stuff as well. But the point is, I would return. Good first run!

Yelp
Who says there's no good Chinese food in LA?! This place is great. I refuse to go elsewhere. Food is always ready for pick up so quickly. Pretty good deal too and large portions so there's always more for lunch the next day (or 2).

Yelp
Ordered fried rice online at $11.95 listed price with a service fee of $0.99 and tax of $1.14 coming to a total of $14.08. Once I was in the restaurant I was charged $16.27 and tipped $5 on top of the order not realizing that i'd been over charged until i went back to my car and checked the receipt. I called the restaurant after I got back home and they proceeded to tell me that the price just hadn't been updated on line. I'll be disputing the charge and never coming back as there is zero state of this anywhere on the receipt. Don't go here if you believe in honest business practices. Thank you:)

Yelp
I have been searching for a good Chinese restaurant near Koreatown. It seemed an impossible feat and I was resigned to think I had to drive all the way to El Monte or Alhambra. Then, out of nowhere, Yelp led me to this gem. Just for reference, the pictures I posted were taken after I took my portion out and wolfed it down lol. I am so happy to have found this place!!! Egg foo young? It's been a decade since I had some! Even in El Monte, not many places have it. Now to be fair, I'm used to the shrimp and veggies being mixed into the pancake, but having it on top didn't bother me at all. The gravy is quite flavorful, I will say that the flavor on the egg foo young, and egg drop soup (not pictured) have a very delicate flavor, so if you need a punch in the face kind of flavor, don't try them. The chow mein is quite flavorful, salty, in a good way, so many bean sprouts!!! The walnut shrimp...words cannot express how delicious they are. I ordered online for pickup and when I got to the restaurant, the dishes were being finished, so you know everything is fresh. I'm excited to finally have a spot for yummy chinese food!!!

Yelp
Service is still horrible here. Havent been here in 6 years. Thought i would order all my old favorites since i was feeling under the weather. And wow. I will never return. Spent $80 on trash. Does this look like magnolia beef to you? All the dishes were watered down. Had no flavor. I couldve spend $80 at panda express and felt it was worth $80 bucks!

David M.

Yelp
I've been here several times and keep on coming back. Basic traditional menu, very fast service, and friendly staff.

Yelp
DO NOT GO / DO NOT CALL This place is atrocious from a first impression. After seeing many good reviews from Google and Yelp, I called to order lunch AROUND 12 PM when I was at work. I was looking to order through the phone to find out if they had char siu pork as a lunch special option. First, the person who picked up the phone was very unfriendly and no personality. Very aggressive customer service by phone. Then, when I ordered the Kung Pao chicken lunch special as clearly stated on their website / attached photo, they said no lunch special. During the order, there was a brief pause and she rudely yells hello? Absolutely garbage customer service which is where they can also send their food.

D M.

Yelp
Definitely won't come back nor I will recommend to anyone. I called around 3:30 PM to pick up party trays at 5 pm. Betty ( the person who got my order) said 5 pm is good and even called me at 5:05 to verify and I said Im 5 minutes away. I got at the restaurant at 5:10 and paid. There is one customer waiting for his food and that's it. After 15 minutes, my order was not out and said it will come. 45 minutes had passed and the food wasnt ready yet. I would have probably be understanding if there are customers, but only one!!! Totally unacceptable. The food wasnt even great.

Douglas L.

Yelp
When ordering lunch special, I was charged the full dinner menu price. Be aware of the the price you are charged, not an honest business practice.

Marshall D.

Yelp
Health food, it ain't. But this is the place for generous portions of good Chinese food at reasonable prices! The House Special Chow Fun is a meat-loving feast. The Sesame chicken is also a keeper. Hey, it's where you go when you just gotta have it!

Niwre O.

Yelp
My fave there is the sweet and sour pork. Service is also fast and good. The ambiance is just normal but clean.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
Great value! Big portions food is fresh and good quality especially for the price. Really great option for Chinese takeout if you're within a few miles of this place I would definitely recommend it.

Kelsey M.

Yelp
The food is amazing, especially the meat. Everything I've had is 10/10. Hot and sour soup is fantastic. Go here instead of some overpriced fancy crap. This is legit.
google avatar

Gema G.

Yelp
I am obsessed with this place. I was looking for a good Chinese food restaurant in Ktown and I was not disappointed. Prices are so reasonable for portion sizes, the flavor is very authentic and quality of food is great. The orange chicken is so tender and breading and glaze is sweet like a donut mouth watering. I like my food spicy so I always request my Brocolli shrimp to be spicy and staff was nice enough to do it. They also hook you up with a nice pot of rice. The restaurant is small and clean and they have a lot of pictures on the wall to show you the variety on the menu. I've already been back two times but I can't wait to come back and try other dishes like their soups they look so yummy for a rainy day.

Yelp
Craving Chinese food near neighborhood, found this place on yelp, so we came and tried their House chow mein. My friend got food poisoning from this place. Even-though the portions are big, the food quality is really bad. Wouldn't recommend this placez
google avatar

Cathy U.

Yelp
I loved Chinese food and sea dragon is the best. we always order spicy porkchop (salt and pepper). So good. Service is great. I recommend this chinese place for chinese food lovers out there.
google avatar

Yelp
Revising my old review. Food was much better this time (I went in myself vs using DoorDash) and the lady working was very nice. Very clean restaurant
google avatar

Emerson I.

Yelp
Finally, I tried Sea Dragon Chinese Restaurant today. I ordered baked pork chops with salted pepper and house fried rice. Both were prepared as you ordered and must say, it's so good! The fried rice has lots of meat/seafood and not oily at all. Of course, the star is fried pork chop, crunchy outside, but moist inside not oily at all as well. Try this restaurant you'll never be disappointed
google avatar

Adri R.

Yelp
The food is delicious! I usually order for takeout or for small events (catering platters). The owner is friendly and always gets my order right. The portions are pretty large and perfect for next days lunch. I've never had any bad experience here. Nice and clean restaurant.
google avatar

Lan T.

Yelp
My new found favorite Chinese restaurant. From the workers to the chef the workers are actual Chinese people. The food tastes so authentic and made fresh. The food is always piping hot when brought to your table and the portion size is so reasonable. My favorite is the chow fun. That will always be my go to plate. My family loves everything we have eaten at this restaurant. There are plenty of parking in the plaza and the restaurant has a good amount of seating. Restaurant is nicely lit and has a tv for all who enjoys watching tv while eating. This place is a must try for fresh, hot, authentic, delicious Chinese food!!!
google avatar

Guillermo E.

Yelp
This is my go to place when it comes to Chinese food. The food is delicious and for the portions of the food the price is just right! Fast service and friendly people... they have a great selection of Chinese food. Decor is simple and the place is clean. You can't go wrong with this restaurant if you love Chinese food!!!

Bella P.

Yelp
While the service was great. The food came out fast and the lady taking our order was sweet, the food itself was raw and over sauced. I ordered the house chow mein and the chicken rice. Chicken was raw and over spilling with how wet it was. The rice was good and the shrimp on the chow mein also great, noodles were still hard and when it did get soft with how hot it was, the sauce put on it was overbearing. All in all. Cute small Chinese place, just know what you're ordering
google avatar

Arielle D.

Yelp
Placed an online order for fried rice for a total of $14.08. Had my fiancé go in to pick it up and they charged him $16.27 and on top of that he tipped $5 to be nice to the ladies. Shady place, food was mid too.
google avatar

Joshua C.

Yelp
I found myself here spontaneously with a few friends, and my order was delicious! I have been craving Chinese food, specifically Chow Fun and I was sad that I couldn't find it on the menu. I decided to call to order and to ask if they have Chow Fun and it turned out they did! The beef chow fun was so delicious, and they were not stingy on the beef! The noodles were soft, and I still had enough for leftovers! I would definitely come back if I were in the area!
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
Came back again to test if my last visit was an exception and I found out it wasn't. Then I observed the 2 women treated everyone very well. And the food was amazing again! I tested the King Do Ribs and it wasonce again! I saw others ordered it too so this must be a signature dish. I tried the HK style chicken core mein and steak with berk peppers. Both, were also good. So the staff consistently treats you well and the food is excellent. If you want good value against Korean places with the long wait times, come here instead and you won't be sorry. Six stars but Yelp only alloyed five.
google avatar

Edgar O.

Yelp
If you want simple authentic Chinese, this is the place. I order the shrimp W/ Spicy salt very crispy pack with chilies and green onion, orange chicken isn't as sweet but savory and seasoned well. I'm here for the food which is great, diner kind small tho
google avatar

Los Angeles C.

Yelp
Food is good but ask her to give water atleast lol I like the food just make sure you ask for the water
google avatar

Katrina R.

Yelp
A dish typically costs around $12 and it also comes with rice. Thanks to their huge portions, this lasts me 2-3 meals! Their lunch specials are even cheaper for what I think is the same amount of food. I always appreciate good food with great value.

Enrique P.

Yelp
Orange chicken, walnut and mayo shrimp..... 10/10. Very tender meat and crispy coating with sauces that weren't over powering. We also had the egg rolls which also get a 10/10 for the perfect fry and tender filling. No chewy meat, no rubbery shrimp, no soggy egg rolls. Everything was cooked to perfection
google avatar

Roel C.

Yelp
Love this whole in the wall! Go to Take out, really good pricing. Only reason they get a 4 was the Eggrolls Suck! Not Home Made. Soggy Vegetables.
google avatar

Daniella O.

Yelp
All the food is incredible! Love the Thai tea and the fortune cookies . Also service is amazing
google avatar

Cody C.

Yelp
This is my go to Chinese restaurant in Koreatown. They have the perfect little ambiance inside as it's not too big and not too small. It's your perfect little hole in the wall spot. They have all the classic Chinese dishes and the ingredients are great. The food is really tasty and is even better as left overs the next day. The portion sizes are huge so you will definitely have food for the next day. The service is really great as well. The ladies who run the front are very attentive and provide amazing service. I would definitely recommend this spot to anybody who loves Chinese food.
google avatar

Michiko A.

Yelp
I would give it a three and a half stars. I think it depended on what you ordered because a lot of restaurants have really good selections and sometimes they also have a miss. Let me tell you about the good points. Overall the service was very good and they treated us in a very friendly manner. I have no complaints with regards to how they treated us. Let's go over The food I liked. They had an outstanding sweet and sour pork. The meat was soft and moist and the outer coating was just right. The flavoring of the sauce was perfect. Next I like their garlic Chinese broccoli. To be honest I've eaten better but this is acceptable. I would probably have used more oyster sauce which I can fix tomorrow when I have left overs. They did kind of overcook the leafy part of the broccoli but it didn't deter from the taste. Next I like there fried dumplings. They were like pork gyoza except deep fried. Very tasty. I ordered chicken chow mein with pan fried noodles. The flavoring was good and the chicken was tender. The noodles were definitely nice and crispy. I would have preferred that they used more than just one or two bok choy stems to go into their sauce. I'm used to seeing more ingredients with China peas, sliced celery, water chestnuts, and mushrooms. None of those additional items were in there. Just two pieces of baby bok choy and the rest was mostly chicken. Some people might prefer that but I like more vegetables. The white rice was perfect. It was moist it was soft and flaky. I'll probably make some homemade fried rice tomorrow morning for breakfast. Now for what I didn't like. I didn't care for their Mongolian beef. Some people might like it but I didn't care for it. I also didn't care for their chashu pork. They had sliced the barbecue pork and then cooked it with sliced round onions. I've never had it that way. The best chashu pork in my neighborhood is Kim's Restaurant. It's marinated for a long time and then cooked so that the outside has a deep flavor. Then you can request it to be sliced or whole so that you could slice it when you get home. You're thinking why did I try another restaurant. I like to try different places because you never know. I might add with all the different dishes that we ordered, The bill came to quite a lot. Still, you don't know unless you try. I wanted to be fair. At the end it all depends on your own tastes. This is just my opinion.

Serena C.

Yelp
Honestly, I was hesitant from buying food from here for some reason, but was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a few different dishes from here and everything was great! Mongolian beef, tofu in brown gravy, and Chinese broccoli with garlic tasted like home to me. Staff was super fast for pickup too. I will definitely come back to visit! 10s all around!!

Mark J.

Yelp
I have enjoyed Chinese food all over California and this tiny place is very impressive, food is excellent! Don't let the lack of ambience for you. Darn good food.

Scott P.

Yelp
After reading some good reviews about this place, I decided to try it. The food I had from this restaurant has got to be some of the worst Chinese food I've ever had in my life. Even my Chinese wife found it disgusting. The baked pork chop with spicy salt was pretty much all dough and no pork. The walnut shrimp with mayonnaise, which is typically a favorite for my son and I, tasted different than what we're accustomed to, and not in a good way. The chicken with curry sauce was bland and does not deserve to be called curry. Save yourself a trip and a bad experience, and avoid this place.
google avatar

Enkhtaivan E.

Yelp
This restaurant so good my son really love this place is orange chicken me neither our family is favorite spot to eat dinner and not much expensive too Thanks
google avatar

Juliana D.

Yelp
the food was so good at a good price! definitely recommend getting the baked pork chops with spicy salt. so yummy! it was busy so the service was ok but otherwise they were attentive and very nice. the place looked okay.
google avatar

Chelsea B.

Yelp
Very yummy will definitely go back! We got the sweet and sour chicken, broccoli, special rice, (which has all the meat options), chow mein, and Mongolian beef. Everything was good and large portion sizes.
google avatar

Carver D.

Yelp
Very solid option, for no frills Chinese. The hot and sour soup, lo mein and everything chicken will hit the spot. Special shout out to the baked salty pork chops.
