The Wonders of Florida in 24 Museums

"Ever wondered what a hybrid of an antique store and a curiosity shop would look like if it had been run by an artistic pirate? If so, the Sea Hagg may be your answer. Opened in 1998, The Sea Hagg is perhaps best described as a three-way combination of maritime oddities museum, outsider artwork installation, and nautical antique shop. The residents of Cortez, Florida, still struggle to come up with any better definition. Owner Jan Holman estimates her collection includes more than a million dollars worth of antique mermaids, pirates, sea hags, fishing floats, fish nets, oars, lanterns, coins, buoys, and shells. It’s not clear if that estimate also includes the 16-foot sawfish bill, the seashell-coated African fertility chair,  the “Grandmother Willow” from the Disney film Pocahontas, or the skull-adorned shrimp boat Deanna Belle that are connected to the store—every last one of which is for sale. The Sea Hagg has also become a venue for events including book signings, fishing festivals and, naturally, a pirate treasure show." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Sea Hag has always been a great local spot to go and see all the unique items for sale. The customer service has always been great until lately. The shop area has a good footprint and you can find almost anything for decoration and if you want to make your home look more like Florida, this is the place to come and find something. Outside you will find more of the bigger items. Inside is more quaint….. Everything here is unique and there is something for everyone’s taste.

Wow! This place is a do not miss experience! I have lived here for 7 years and had never stopped, but my visiting oldest daughter noticed it on our way to Coquina Beach and asked to stop on the way home. I am so glad we did. My daughter said that is more like a museum of nautical treasures than a store. We did make a purchase and I will certainly go back with my wife. I highly recommend! The owner is delightful and the store a landmark.

I'll start by saying I'm not a Karen/Ken, I have worked in the tourist and hospitality industries most of my life. I don't know how this place stays open. Horrible employees and owner. Always rude, unhelpful and argumentative. I have taken friends and visitors and recommended multiple people to visit this store. I liked to think that I had just caught them on bad days, but it seems that every day is a bad day. I have had this told to me by people I have sent there and have had it happen to myself. I asked if they had something was told "maybe but I'd have to go find it, take pictures, send them to the owner to get a price, I'm not doing all that". I will never go to or recommend this establishment ever again.

I would agree that I did not feel comfortable with the man that worked there. I did not feel welcomed and I was irritated and angry at the attitude I got from him. Who knows, I may have spent some good money there, but not after his presence. It is a cool shop though. So many nautical items from rope to sextants to beach signs. I mean it’s cool! The guy... not so much.

Was looking so forward to seeing this place. We drove couple hundred miles to spend an obscene amount of money on our new Island bungalow. However, upon entering the building, I asked the manager about the sale of the building. He was extremely rude, and curt with his answers and purposely tried to belittle and may us feel unwelcome. We tried to shake it off and continue to shop as we had found many must have items. But we decided to leave and go spend our time and money on a more accommodating and civilized establishment. Never coming back !!

I am only giving the 1 star review because of the male staff in the store. The store itself is amazing. This guy was rude. I asked about prices of some paintings and when he named the price, I said that it would be too much and that I will think about it. He walked away and said that if I cannot afford it, someone else will - I was shocked! Well, I am an investor and have vacation properties. I needed decoration and I just simply wasn't willing to pay the price for those paintings - I surely could afford it. It is rude and silly to judge people like that. I instantly wanted to leave the store, but I had already chosen some amazing merchandise to buy. Another family that wanted to buy some things there was greeted with "only buying small stuff today?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing. After I was done paying, another customer told me that I had chosen nice merchandise and I replied that I would buy everything in that store if I could. The male staff responded: "yes, buy all the stuff, so I can go home". He clearly doesn't want to be there. You would think that after COVID-19 he would appreciate customers - but that only applies to people with manners and that know what customer service means. Other than that: the store and merchandise is amazing!
