A Boozy Crawl Through Hampton Beach in New Hampshire’s Seacoast Region - Eater Boston

"The Sea Ketch is a bit of a meet, so it’s not for everybody, but there are some pretty great beach views — and people-watching perches — on its several decks. The bartenders here make a stiff mixed drink, making this a good first stop: Get that buzz going nice and early." - Terrence Doyle

We had a really great server. She was very attentive and laid back. She got us the food promptly and informed us of local fun in the area. My girlfriend’s food wasn’t the best. She had great baked scallops but the steak was plain, and the potatoes (mini baked) were leaking water or oil as she cut them. And for 38 dollars a plate we were hoping and expecting better. It was a welcoming atmosphere and stunning view. And my plate of food was fantastic!

Our regular stop when visiting Hampton Beach. The Painkillers were great. The Calamari was cooked perfectly. The only thing we wish was different is offering a Thai Chili sauce instead of marinara. I got the Lobster, Shrimp and Scallops Alfredo (it was amazing) and my wife got the Signature Haddock and Lobster. She loved hers too. The service was perfect throughout our dinner. We definitely recommend it to anyone at the beach for for the day

Food was amazing. Mimosa's could be better. Service was flawless! Emily took care of us and she was so sweet! We went for breakfast around 10 and there was no wait. Got a table for 2 on the upper deck. Washrooms are pretty cramped but it was clean.

Google
This location is impossible to beat! Especially if you're willing to climb to the top tippity top of the balcony which has a limited menu compared to the 2nd level. Staff is good and food is consistently moderate which is still considerably good being that they serve a largely tourist population. Drinks are fun & creative and they have a generous draft selection. Bring your sweatshirt, the ocean breeze is fierce at the top, though the do have outdoor heaters for the coldest days. They provide ground level seating for individuals using a wheelchair or other ambulatory devices.

Google
Pretty standard seaside restaurant. The food was very good, the views of the ocean were amazing from the 3rd floor. Easy to get a table. It was busy but the service was good and our waitress went out of her way to make our toddler happy.

Google
Always the most beautiful place to spend the afternoon for lunch drinks and music. Nothing like the open air 3 rd floor overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Great staff . Thanks Deb, she's an awesome server.

Update: Returned twice during our stay this week. The colossal lobster roll is still HUGE and delicious. It is now $50, which is crazy, but worth it as a very special treat. The second time we went and had Jamie (our favorite server—she is so attentive and excellent) and the fish sandwiches were delicious. Best place to go! I love the sea ketch! My fav place on the strip. Got the colossal lobster roll and it was HUGE—two big scoops of lobster salad. Drinks, fries, haddock bites, and onion rings all great. Love to sit on the decks and take in the view! Service also awesome! Only complaint—there was a big piece of cartilage in the lobster roll that I’m thankful I pulled out before eating—larger than a quarter. Otherwise, amazing!

Google
Christine was an amazing server very nice and attentive. Drinks were outstanding . The lobster pie has huge pieces of lobster in it. The coconut shrimp was amazing but I don’t have any pics because I wolfed it down. I’ll definitely be back. If you go ask for Christine .

Yelp
Stopped for lunch at the Sea Ketch and was seated on the enclosed patio overlooking the beach, quite nice. Service was fast and very attentive. I had the Haddock and chips special which was excellent. Very fresh and cooked perfectly. Generous portion size. Fries and coleslaw also good. Would eat here again.

Yelp
Why is no one talking about how rude the staff is at this restaurant? I went here with my boyfriend last weekend and we walked up, there were 10 ladies standing around at the host desk, we thought maybe they were others waiting to be seated but we then were looked at like we did not belong and one of the girls blatantly rolled her eyes at us before seating us. The waitresses were not as bad but still not nearly as good of an experience I have had at even my local Applebees. I am astonished they get away with treating their customers this way. The food wasn't terrible but absolutely nothing to brag about. There is a beautiful view upstairs.

Yelp
We came here to eat with our mom who flew out of town for her vacation. She is patient so asked us to keep waiting for a waiter to greet us when we got seated. After 25 minutes of us looking around and waitstaff looking at us, no one even acknowledged our presence or asked if we wanted to order drinks. The hostess had not told anyone we were seated. The manager happened to be nearby when we went back to notify the hostess and she took one of our appetizers off after apologizing profusely. We enjoyed the beautiful restaurant with multiple levels for beachside views but with a very similar menu and set up to restaurants on this strip, there were too many to visit and try since nothing we ordered stood out to us. The clam chowder was a little runny and more so broth and potatoes than clam. The best dish was the Alfredo which was saved by the generous portions of seafood.

Yelp
Unbelievable the way they treat their customers. I asked at the door for a to go order. The first hostess sent me to the pickup area. They don't have the same food of the restaurant. Then, she told me I could come up. I came to order a to go order, and so i did. I asked to them to cut the meet and they said they can't "because it came pre-cooked already" - ??????. While I was waiting, I asked if I could drink something, and they said I couldn't once the order would be ready in 5 minutes. It's being 10 minutes I'm here already, and nothing so far. They have a great space, but I can't believe the managers don't teach their employees how to serve a table, how to sell. Hope you guys be better.

Yelp
We met up with our family at the beach and decided to try this place out! For such a large group, we were seated right away! Great service and the ambiance was great especially for being right off the beach! The views are great! The food was good. Lots of sea food options, burgers, and sandwiches. I was impressed for the options for people who do not eat meat. Seems like they had a great beer menu, although at the time of dinning with the family I did not try any beer. Later on I went up the top deck and got a lager beer, it was great! The Buffalo Chicken strips and fries were great and filled with flavor! My husband got the fish and chips and he said it was great. Worth checking out! Our server was very kind, patient, and had a joyful personality. I appreciated her greatly!

Yelp
Great location and great views from the roof deck seating upstairs! Live music was great with this guy singing with his guitar. The place was pretty packed when we got there, understandably so as it was peak lunch time around 1:30 on a Saturday at Hampton beach. It took a while before our server even came by, but he was pleasant and service was great. I got the lobster roll 5oz which came on a brioche bun and there was a lot of lobster meat and it was good. Side of potato salad was good too. The hubby got their burger and side of coleslaw. He thought the burger was okay, nothing special. Coleslaw was nice not too much mayo. He also got the painkiller drink and it was good maybe a little strong. The umbrellas provide nice shade and keep it relatively cooler on a warm sunny like it was today. Overall good experience to try out once.

Yelp
I'm sure this place (and dozens of similar spots on the main "strip") is HOPPING busy during the summer, but we got in and got a primo table pretty quickly on a beautiful, warm October evening. We even found a great nearby parking space, which I'm sure wouldn't be the case during "prime time!!" Super fast, friendly service, all the classic local/regional seafood options, plus some "turf" for the landlubbers. I had to try a lobster roll, since I'd never had one before, but while it was ok, it might not be my first choice if I were to return. Good deal, just a bit too mayo-naisey for my liking. My friends, however, got a great variety of interesting options, including a GF scallop dish, a few tempting salads, and the never regrettable chowder!! It was a cooler evening, but the upstairs patio was covered, heated, and quite comfortable. We were in and out pretty quickly, but never felt rushed, and our waiter did GREAT with our pesky separate checks!! Everyone loves a place like this in the summer time, but I'll take an off season visit to a beach town hot-spot any day of the week!! More relaxed, still the same (or better!!) views, wonderful menu, and no sand trapped in my bathing suit!!! What more could you ask for?!? Quite the KETCH!! :-)

Yelp
Seafood restaurant right on the water in Hampton Beach. Amazing views of the beach with a deck and outdoor seating. They also have inside seating for the fall and winter. Large menu with mostly seafood entrees. A little pricey but the food was amazing and the portions were large. I got the lobster formaggio dish and it was so big 3 people could eat it. The steamers were also great. I bet this place is packed in the summer! I would come back for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
The fried basket was good fish wasn't over cooked and super fresh. The chicken salad was a little plain but they packed it so I finished only half. The pasta salad was really mushy and felt like they only put Italian dressing ontop so nothing special. The chicken sandwich was nice and juicy. The chocolate shake had liquor and it was delicious treat to end the day!

Yelp
I've eaten here a handful of times and have yet to be impressed. However, I've had drinks here LOADS of times and it's a spot worth checking if you're planning a Hampton Beach bar crawl. The upper deck has a great view of the beach and the top floor looks westward making for one of the best views of sunsets from the strip. They offer live music occasionally. I don't mind but just a heads up, there's lots of stairs.

Yelp
I will tell you that this place has a lot of great things about it ... Right on the waterfront, the views of ocean and summertime hustle and bustle, and the food is fresh and delicious. If you are thinking of going somewhere though that you can afford on a tight budget, this is not the place. But, if you are willing to pay for the above items like ocean view and good food, then roll in and check it out. This is the only reason it doesn't have 5 stars as I am a dine on a less expensive dimes as a family) Also, don't hesitate to head upstairs and grab a rooftop seat (they also have heated tent structures set in upstairs to make sure that during some of the chillier months, you are comfortable and warm. So, if you are looking for a touristy seafood place right on the water, then check this one out.

Yelp
Sea Ketch Take Out is hidden in plain sight. It's literally underneath the Sea Ketch Restaurant with picnic tables at ground level steps away from the Casino, beach, Village Playground, and amphitheater. The view and people watching is naturally quite excellent, but it's the affordable excellent food that's the draw. Most items are under $10, the exception is the seafood. The menu is so extensive that I must refer you to the photos. The burger was very good and far above fast food grade. It was seared on the outside, and moist on the inside. The bun was fresh, as were the traditional veggies on top. The pricing is far below the Sea Ketch restaurant, as they should be. I'll be back to work through more of the menu.

Yelp
Food and service are excellent even when it is busy. We had appetizers, maple bacon chicken and spring rolls, both were great.

Yelp
i came here for a mother's day lunch and it was a wonderful experience. the views at the top are amazing. our server was giovanni and he took great care of us. the colossal lobster roll and the fisherman's platter was impeccable. lobster rangoons are also tasty. i really loved their large drink menu too. 5/5, would definitely go again :)
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Great music tonight, and the chicken tenders are also delicious. I don't recommend the caprese appetizer because there was too much olive oil. Service wasn't the best. Our stuff was brought quickly but grabbing the attention of our server was a little tricky. Over all pretty good.
google avatar

Abigail C.

Yelp
Amazing service even though it was so busy, my favorite restaurant on the entire strip!! got our food so quickly, and the server helped me pick out which drink to get and i really liked it. its the only restaurant I've ever been to thats given such a perfect portion size. not to little for the price, not too much that i have to carry it around the boardwalk. I got the marinated steak tips with mashed potatoes, my boyfriend got the same thing but with the french fries which were amazing!! the marinade was beautiful. our compliments to the chefs who prepared it! we will be back NEXT anniversary! thank you guys!
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
Their drinks menu and oceanfront atmosphere are outstanding! Gin Lime Rickey is refreshing without being overly sweet. Espresso martini, very tasty. Our server was great too. We also got a lobster roll, big chunks of lobster, really enjoyed that. On a nice day at the beach, you can't beat this place.
google avatar

Lena V.

Yelp
The view! The view! The view! (The view)! ... from upstairs of course... don't be shy and go right upstairs, the bored host will guide you... Other than that, on Tuesday 11am August 23rd... it's average, not so friendly bartender with weird attitude calling my boyfriend "brother", plastic glasses, some drinks from menu not available due to later on delivery, food is pricey.... But the view!!!
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
We stopped here on a whim. It was a cold breezy overcast day. Got a choice of either a limited fried menu at the rooftop bar or a more diverse menu in a heated overlook balcony on the second floor. Daughter and I split a lobster roll and a fried calamari appetizer. We thought the food was pretty good. Was it a value at the pricing...I say you are paying for a bit of scenery. The service was okay. They were training a new server but we really didn't see any one for most of our meal. They never refilled our drinks.

Sadie L.

Yelp
The lobster formaggio is soooooo delicious!!! Alfredo sauce with several cheeses and it has so much lobster in it! It is a huge portion, we shared with three people total and it was enough with our three appetizers ! Highly recommend

P B.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience at Sea Ketch tonight. The drinks were tasty and the bacon wrapped chicken app exceeded expectations. Crispy and delicious. My choice of scallops, shrimp and lobster Alfredo was the best meal I've ever had while visiting Hampton every year with an amazing amount of seafood. Tender, large scallops, big chunks of lobster and lobster claws, along with many large shrimp mixed into a delicious creamy Alfredo. Other dinners of Whole clams and fish and chips were big hits too. I am only sorry that I didn't take pictures for you! Yum!

Spencer C.

Yelp
I just left dinner from the sea catch and had the best surf and turf I have had on the sea coast. Chris took care of us and he was such a great guy and helped us with whatever we needed. I highly recommend coming here if in the area, such a great view and great people. 10/10 The bread and butter was also to die for!
google avatar

Elizabeth F.

Yelp
We ordered the clam platter the clams were made fresh to order and fries were crispy. Staff nice and clean place. Will definitely be back
google avatar

Jennie G.

Yelp
Since knowing we were coming to Hampton, I wanted to try the Sea Ketch. The reviews were so mixed I couldn't decide from there and I'm glad I didn't. Upon arrival you're greeted by lovely young staff that seats you according to inside or outside dining. We chose inside and were seated directly into a lovely room that had a magnificent aquarium. We had a lovely young server named Anna whose recommendation of the fish and chips did not disappoint! The fish was so flaky and remarkably not greasy! I had ordered one of their signature drinks, the riptide and it was delicious and appropriately named :) We plan on going back to try their lunch and breakfast and are really looking forward to it!
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Almost ended up paying for our table and another tables food because of an error on the waiters. The food was meh, it was typical bar food. Don't think I will be back in the future

Dawn S.

Yelp
Sat at the bar Kerry was our bartender. She was Excellent. Food was amazing!! Fish and Chips Fried Clams
google avatar

Wanda C.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this restaurant!!! The views were amazing, food was great and the service was great! We were able to sit outside on the patio because they had heaters that made the space so enjoyable!
google avatar

Traci K.

Yelp
Nikki (sp,?) a hostess is also awesome! Thanks for recognizing us. Left a tip for you Sunday night.

Colleen B.

Yelp
We had dinner last night on the 4th floor with Amy as our server. She delivers my drink and notices about 8 fruit flies in it. She tells me that's too many bugs and she'll get me a new one. Great! Before she leaves the table my son commented that his drink too had several bugs floating in it. She told him his was FINE. 2-3 bugs is perfectly acceptable!! She would not replace it because it didn't have too many with just three. Never have I ever heard such absurdity in my life! Never! Bugs ok, so long as they are under Amy's threshold for them. Mind blown. If this is how your restaurant operates, the board of health should take notice. Yuck!
google avatar

Tracy F.

Yelp
Been here a few times...the food and drinks are always yummy. We ate inside because of the heat and happy we did!! Definitely worth your money
google avatar

Warren J.

Yelp
I have had many good meals at the Sea Ketch, but the Steamers today were the worst I have ever had. I am not sure what happened, but they smelled bad and tasted terrible. Perhaps it is early in the season, and they are not yet on their A game, but was a really disappointing experience.
google avatar

Marc G.

Yelp
Great place to go on the boardwalk. Seafood is what you get here. It was very easy for us to get seated at lunch time. They have 3 levels to choose from. I asked for the best view and got it. We ordered lobster and steamers. Both came out perfectly. Very reasonably priced. A must to check out. A little something for all. Very friendly staff.
google avatar

Jenni S.

Yelp
We went to the top level and sat in the outdoor roof patio. The server was so nice. She came by regularly to check on us and was great with the two kids with us. We got a ton of fried food (clams, haddock, scallops), Mac and cheese, calamari & coconut shrimp, mango blended margaritas. All of the food and drinks were delish! Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Donnie M.

Yelp
This my favorite breakfast spot for years. I mean 5 star service food was always cooked to order great ocean view while enjoying your food today we arrived to find the upstairs closed so you had to wait in line to order self seating on the street level inhaling exhaust fumes from the traffic on the boulevard‍. The bacon under cooked the English muffins barely toasted the home fries were still very good but other than that everything was a HUGE Dissappointment I'm praying they return to the 5 star establishment soon
google avatar

Jillian B.

Yelp
I am giving this a 2 star because I feel it is overpriced with small portions. My husband and I went last night and we got The Steamers ($26.99) then The Whole Belly Clam Dinner ($36.99). The steamers were good and had a decent portion the whole belly clam dinner was a joke for the price. It was so small and the clams were small with no big belly's. The French fries were small and were okay. We don't mind paying for things at all but we were very disappointed for that price to get that amount. Service was okay, I think they forgot us so we waited a bit then someone came over as were were watching servers go by. It was busy but there were a ton of staff so it was a little unnecessary. I personally would not go back or recommend. I am sure there are better seafood restaurants on the strip.
google avatar

Bettie D.

Yelp
I got the Caprese Salad which was perfection just the right amount of everything but the Ahi tuna salad was a bit skimpy and boring as there was just the dressing, lettuce, cherry tomatoes and the tuna but it was delicious regardless but more toppings would have made it even better. Would definately go again

Sheryl E.

Yelp
If you want good seafood go somewhere else. The menu for the upstairs was basically pub food. The only thing impressive was the view. My daughter got the lobster roll & there was alot of lobster meat but you could only taste mayonnaise. It wasnt great & none of us wanted to finish it. My husband got the smaller portion of nachos with lobster & the nachos were really good. I got a fried fish sandwich with fries & it was ok. Basically expensive pub food.

Jenni S.

Yelp
Why is the girl at the counter fighting about giving me a grilled chicken wrap instead of a Caesar wrap? Just give me the dressing and I'll do it myself. There's nothing to prove.

Rob C.

Yelp
We've now been burned here twice. The 1st time was several years ago. I ordered a chicken dish and when I took the first bite it was some kind of fish instead. The thing is, there wasn't even a fish menu option for the chicken dish I ordered. Complete goof by the kitchen. I sent it back, but the dining experience was ruined as by the time I got the correct dish my wife was done hers. To top it off when I get the bill they only gave me a discount on the dish instead of comping it like any other restaurant in the world would do. What? Management said "well, you ate it, didn't you? It's our policy, no exceptions." We vowed to never eat there again. Fast forward to last weekend. We're out with a group and they all decide to go to dinner here. We brushed off the bad experience before and I thought that it couldn't happen twice to us. WRONG! My mother in law finds hair in her dish. Just few minutes later my wife finds hair in her dish. We send both back to be remade. They said 15 minutes. Over 1/2hr later the food finally shows up. Yet another dining experience ruined here because now they had to eat after everyone else was done. On top of that we were now cutting it close to get to a show at the Casino, so they just picked at their meals and boxed the rest home. Again, everyone expected the meals to be comped, but yet again both were only given a discount. Yet again they said that's policy. When the waitress was informed about the hair she asked them if they wanted a replacement meal, or if they wanted no replacement. What a stupid question - they came to eat, so they are supposed to not eat because the kitchen staff doesn't know what a hair net is? I suppose if they said to forget bringing them a replacement maybe then the meal would be comped because they didn't eat it? WOW! This place is downright AWFUL. Their meals are overpriced and bland tasting, their quality control is suspect, and their food cleanliness is doubtful. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK AT, OR PATRONIZE THIS PLACE - EVER. They fleece people with their policies expecting that folks on vacation won't put up a fight and they can just move on to fleece the next unsuspecting person. They deserve to close. Do yourself a favor and patronize one of the other restaurants on the strip.

Leisa A.

Yelp
Gluten free menu with tasty items. This is my second visit. Ocean views or dine inside. Lite fare or full dinner. Waitress was attentive. Love the bacon maple chicken bites. $$$.

Bill S.

Yelp
Lobster was good. Shrimp scampi was good. Went on Saturday night of Labor Day weekend so there was a long wait. Waiter was very good.

Krissy M.

Yelp
went to the Hampton Beach this Friday with my family and after a beautiful sunset we were starved. came across this beautiful restaurant very impressive with 3 stories and even bouncers in the front buttttt looks are deceiving. honesty for a restaurant on Hampton beach its great but for actual food I think not. My salmon was covered in pesto so I was wondering why it tasted so bitter and tangy. to my disappointment after scraping some pesto off it was deathly burnt. love the vibes but also pricey. I didn't mind it for what it is. Hence the 3

Yelp
Last time I left a review for Sea Ketch was 5 years ago. I'm leaving another one today. Another 5 star review. This place is outstanding! Outstanding service and outstanding food! Highly recommend the steamers, fried clams, and scallops. Great place to sit outside, have dinner/drinks, listen to live music, and enjoy the ocean view.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
I had a great time here on my visit to Hampton Beach. The food was excellent, and drinks were good. We had friendly service. It's a very fun atmosphere with multiple floors of places to sit, both inside and outside.

Jenny L.

Yelp
This is the only place on the strip I usually recommend people to eat, they are consistent on food quality and not overpriced.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
On the way to Portsmouth, we stopped by the Sea Ketch Restaurant, a multi-level restaurant with a great view of Hampton Beach. I liked how the patio table had patio umbrellas. Our server Riley C. was attentive. Brendan enjoyed Painkillers, which consisted of dark rum, cream of coconut, orange juice, and pineapple juice blended with ice and topped with grated nutmeg. I enjoyed the Ketch Runner, which consisted of a blend of white rum, coconut rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, and cranberry juice shaken and served over the rocks. It reminded me of a rum punch. It was sweet, fruity, and refreshing.

Alexis C.

Yelp
WORST SERVICE EVER, I have been a bartender for over 10 years and would never would give a 1 star review when the food is good but that's how bad the Bartender who was working the deck was. She made us feel like a nuisance for the short time we were there to the point we asked for to go boxes right when we got our food and just left. Save yourself the awkwardness and spend your money somewhere else, plenty of good seafood options around.

Mike P.

Yelp
Food is fresh and hot. Service is friendly and professional. Prices are reasonable for the area. We came once in the off season and had the same experience. Fried fish is lightly coated and crispy. Fries are great . Chicken tenders are also delicious. I highly recommend this place when you are at the beach.
google avatar

Olga E.

Yelp
Everything was on point...food was tasty & cooked to perfection, the ocean view was mesmerizing & customer service on point. We can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Adam V.

Yelp
WOW! Awesome! I can't say enough how wonderful the food was! We had the pasta with shrimp, scallops and lobster! It came with four lobster claws and a bunch of scallops and shrimp. It was one of the best restaurant Alfredo sauces I have ever had! We also had the clams and signature drinks -- and they were to die for. If you're in Hampton Beach, you have to try this place out!
