Dumpling Daughter to Expand to Brookline From Weston and Cambridge - Eater Boston

"Two restaurateurs who previously ran Jack-Tar American Tavern in Marblehead could soon unveil a new restaurant in the same location (which was briefly home to Superfine, from different owners, in between). Scott Brankman and Emily Farnsworth-Brankman will reportedly open Sea Salt (126 Washington St.) in November, possibly bringing back some favorite menu items from Jack-Tar, which was known for pizza, burgers, and more." - Dana Hatic

I had dinner at Sea Salt while in town last week. The restaurant is super casual and welcoming, though a bit dark given it is in the basement of the building. The menu was very approachable, and my starter cocktail (maple Manhattan) was perfect. I was advised to try the butternut squash and beet salad, which I found to be very sub par. The tiny pieces of butternut squash were flavorless and most were undercooked. The salad lacked a crunch factor, and it could have used some goat cheese. I then tried the crab spaghetti as I had heard it was quite tasty. It was tasty, but it was a very small portion and could have used some Calabrian chili or something with a kick to add dimension. Overall it was a good meal but had room for improvement. I’d go back perhaps during the season to try again.

We had dinner at Sea Salt twice during our recent stay in Marblehead, and it was fantastic. The food, service, and restaurant were all wonderful—and the staff were very welcoming, attentive, and kind! The cocktails and wine are 🤌 while the food was delicious and perfectly portioned. Would highly recommend having dinner at Sea Salt when you’re in Marblehead!

Wow! We stopped in based on the reviews here and boy did they not disappoint! Starting with the host and server, the folks here are wonderful and kind. I believe we had Emily as our server this evening and she was a true gem! We shared the Brussels sprouts and I don’t think I’ve ever had this kind of flavor with them and we LOVED it! We each had a glass of the Malbec and that was equally delicious! My husband had the shrimp and crab spaghetti and what a meal he said that was! He was practically licking the plate! I had the rigatoni bolognese and my goodness, the flavor was amazing! Based on what I’ve experienced her and what I’ve seen others experiencing, this is a must stop restaurant if you’re in Marblehead!

I can’t say enough about the excellent service and over-the-top hospitality at Sea Salt. We showed up unannounced with a 7 lb Chihuahua in hand after taking a a stroll through historic Marblehead on a gorgeous Friday night - and asked if we could eat on the outdoor patio. David, the manager, was super welcoming, accommodating — and active (not always the case with GM’s). He took the initiative to light an outdoor heater to keep us comfortable. At one point he ran across the street to shop at Crosby’s when they were low on an ingredient - he is a rollup your sleeves sort of leader, which may help explain why all the rest of the staff are equally engaging and wonderful. Marc was our server and was extremely charming, knowledgeable and helpful about the menu and specials that night. You can tell when people truly enjoy what they do and where they work - Marc was that guy. He is going places, as they say. We had Maple Manhattan cocktails to start (divine), Korean chicken tenders, Ahi tuna poke, and Aleppo Honey Roasted Salmon entree - and shared it all. Everything was thoughtfully prepared and tasty. The Korean chicken tenders had authentic gochujang, were just slightly dry, but still solid and plentiful for an app. The ahi dish was the star of the night - lots of chunky fresh tuna, a large crispy wonton “bed”, wonderful complementary salsa adds, and the spicy mayo was a big hit with me (wife thought it could have used a smidge less mayo and smidge more spice - but hey…); the salmon was perfectly cooked and all the flavors on the plate blended nicely together. The honey advertised on this salmon did not really come through to add some sweet, but otherwise was a well executed dish. All in all - the meal was a B+ but the professional service from every employee we saw makes this an A restaurant any day of the week. Sea Salt is a “must try” for any visitor or local Marbleheader. A big thanks to David, Marc, and the chef team at Sea Salt for making this a wonderful impromptu meal on a picture-perfect New England Fall evening. We will be back!

Google
Really happy we stopped in! Saw high reviews on Google & we wanted to try something new. We used to love 5 Corners Kitchen, but fell out of love due to various reasons. My husband and I will travel for good food. This place did not disappoint. Staff was very inviting and friendly. Food was fresh and tasty. Nice sized bar. I ordered the Shrimp and Crab Spaghetti. My pic doesn’t do it justice because I ate half already. Generous portions and reasonably priced. My husband got the Cobb salad with shrimp. He omitted the bacon and onion. The place is very good at accommodating our food needs/wants. Happy to find another place to add to our roster!

Google
This place is just excellent in every way! The food, the service and super reasonable prices. We found it a few months ago, and each time can’t pull ourselves away from exactly the same order - I’m sure plenty of other dishes are great, but once you’ve had a taste of things you like, it’s hard to not have them again. It’s newish and sort of hidden so we’re very glad to see it busy.

Google
The food was outstanding!! Great service and left very satisfied!! Highly recommend if looking for a place outside of the hustle and bustle of Salem!

Google
Such a good dinner spot. I got the salmon and brusssel sprouts as an app! Cocktails were so good too. My husband loved the burger! So cute and I even left my purse there and they contacted me immediately and I picked it up. Great staff!!

Yelp
I was really impressed with this place. It didn't seem like much walking in but everything about it - the food especially and the service blew me away. We started with fries and dumplings which we all loved and then I most of us had burgers. They have gluten free burger buns which is awesome and it was one of the best burgers I've had in a while. I had the goats cheese burger - highly recommend! Prices are completely reasonable (about $20-$30 for entrees, $15 for apps, and drinks were about $13) which is a bonus these days.

Yelp
Our favorite Marblehead restaurant. You can go uber fancy - or eat burgers and wings. Either way the meal will be exemplary. Excellent mixed drinks too!

Yelp
Had the best Baked Stuffed Haddock ever! Wife was very pleased with her Haddock Basket also.

Yelp
Great little restaurant tucked away in old town Marblehead. I met some friends here for dinner and had a great meal. We sat outside and were tended to by a very friendly and attentive staff. I opted for the wild mushroom pizza and it was super tasty. The pizzas are big enough to share or to have leftovers. Definitely someplace to try if you're in Marblehead and are looking for a casual place to have dinner.

Yelp
We ordered take out after reading some good reviews. The food was even better than we imagined! Elevated Pub Food that is delicious! We have eaten there twice in the past 2 weeks. The Sea Salt burger was well seasoned, cooked as ordered and had caramelized onions, bacon and good cheddar. So good we've ordered it both times. Highly recommend the Asian Lettuce wraps, wonderfully seared chicken, beautiful sauces and pickles. We ordered the "warm chips" knowing nothing more than that description. GET THEM! Homemade, crispy potato chips with melty blue cheese, bacon, sour cream and chives- amazing! Staff was professional. We cannot wait to eat their delicious food again.

Yelp
Hadn't been back to this location in so so many years. But after one of the best shrimp tacos I've had in years (and this is from a 25+ year now Southern California resident), I had to come back for a 2nd night of those tacos before I left town. Highly recommend! Can't wait to come back and perhaps try a few more of their menu items. But ohhhh, those shrimp tacos are better than any Mexican or other restaurant in southern California.

Yelp
Great food, great service. The pear pizza prosciutto and the truffle fries is my go to meal!

Yelp
I enjoyed their wild mushroom flatbread very much. The wild mushroom flavor came through and the caramelized onions complimented them perfectly I ordered it without the goat cheese. Service at the bar was top notch. I was served by "Matt Rife" as it was Halloween!

Yelp
I visited Sea Salt's earlier incarnation, Jack Tar's, at least three times a week and loved it. Was looking forward to all that I liked when it returned with nearly the same menu, but a different name. I have only been twice since it opened, and have been very disappointed. The prices are outrageous (yes, I know everything has gone up), and the meals I've had have been disappointing. Tonight I ordered a cheeseburger, which I had to send back because it had a long hair in it (okay, that happens). It was tremendously salty, and very disappointing. The fries were no more than average. I doubt I will return; wish they had brought back the old Jack Tar instead of this new vision.

Yelp
Came here for our anniversary for dinner and they were closed outside of their business hours. Bummer

Yelp
It's good food and atmosphere here. We enjoy all their dishes and cocktails. I definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
This was honestly one of the worst meals I've had on the North Shore. We got our food to go, so I can't speak to the ambiance (though it seemed cute) or service (though the hostess was pleasant), but God, the food was just flavorless, forgettable, and flagrantly overpriced. My wife summed up the vibe when she described the roasted corn soup as tasting like "corn water." If this has been a bargain bin meal I would maybe give them a pass and an extra star, but for what is presented as fairly upscale dining, the proprietors should be ashamed.

Yelp
It was okay. Nothing great. Food was average and the service was meh. I sat at the bar and had the fried chicken at the suggestion of my server. It was just okay. There are a lot of restaurants in Marblehead. This one wasn't my favorite.

Yelp
Such a great place for a date night. We enjoyed sitting at the bar. Great ambience. The tuna tartare was the best I've ever had. So fresh. We enjoyed our cocktails as well.

Yelp
Food was ABSOLUTELY delicious!! Best Brussel sprouts I've had in my whole life & any seafood dish you get is yummy! Will definitely go back!
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
Excellent service and waitstaff very friendly. Food was excellent especially the shrimp scampi pizza and the crispy Brussels sprouts appetizer. I know everyone is kind of over the brussels sprouts thing but these are very very good and worth giving a try!

Yelp
Going to be my local hang out for a good meal and service!!! Had date night here a few weeks ago and was great. We had reservations for out side seating but it rained and they called to cancel our reservation because there was no interior seating left. Made reservations again with seating inside and well worth the wait!! Our meals were great and tasty and hot when served which seems to be a problem with a lot of establishments. Seems more of a local crowd and staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Scallops were great which was the night's special and my girl had a wonderful dish but we can not remember what she had because it was a few weeks ago!!! Lol!! Never felt rushed and everything was wonderful and looking for our return visit

Yelp
The best all-around restaurant in Marblehead, hands down. Family run with care and consideration on all aspects - food, bar, wait staff. They update the menu with the seasons. Indoor & outdoor dining. Always delivers! Good gourmet pizzas too. If you have time for one meal in MHD, this is your place.
google avatar

Yelp
Favorite restaurant ever. You can get anything and it will be amazing. My favorite appetizer is the burrata. Love the flatbreads. All of the mains are spectacular. On top of great food the service is also very friendly. Make sure to leave room for desert...the apple pie in particular is life changing.
google avatar

Yelp
Got take out from them and the food was solid. Good size portion and friendly staff. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars because I nearly bit it leaving the place. Absolutely dumbest place to have a step as you exit. Please make it a ramp.

Yelp
Hands down best spot in town! Great food atmosphere and service. Owners Scott and Emily have come back (previous owners of Jack Tar whi) and have created a space that is so warm and inviting. I loved Jack Tar and yet Sea Salt is even better. The beer and wine lists are fantastic. An impressive mix of craft brewed beers which will make any beer drinker happy. The menu is a mix of new and old favs...wings, burgers, pizzas, etc... and my fav salad dressing (maple balsamic) but on a new salad with arugula, blue cheese, beets and roasted squash. Somehow the Brankmans have a knack for creating crave worthy salads and other menu items that are both simple and delicious. I also highly recommend the olive appetizer. The olives are warm, tender and flavorful in a dressing with citrus, rosemary, salt and olive oil. Wings, pizza and burgers are amazing. They've only been open for 3 nights and we've been already there twice. This will definitely be our go to place a few nights a week. Lucky to have this restaurant in town. A must try for locals and visitors, though visitors will lament that they can't just pop down to this wonderful spot on a random Tuesday night.

Yelp
So we ate a lot. We ordered the wings, mussels, Caesar and house salads. We also had the kids spaghetti and the risotto. Everything was lights out. They started us off with some bread. Then the wings and mussels. The wings were hold overs from jack tar and tasted perfect. Didn't even desire any ranch or blue cheese. The mussels were next level. So many folks get it wrong but you got it right. The bread was a perfect touch. We loved the salads as well. I'm a huge fan of the Caesar and I've had them all over. So many places give you the gross hard past of romaine but Sea Salt served up mostly the green parts. The house salad was just as good. The kids meals were fine, small portions of pasta which you'd expect. The kids menu was expansive which was cool. The decor was pretty bland but that's cool with me. Went there for food not decorations. Did like the lights on the wall above each table.

Yelp
Great to have the original Jack Tar back! The ambiance and lighting are warm and welcoming, as is the service. We had the black bean burger and sausage pizza, both very tasty. The menu offers a nice mix of traditional pub food and fine dining. Note- not a full liquor license, beer and wine only.

Jane D.

Yelp
I love this local restaurant so much. The food is always fantastic! I'm obsessed with their tuna tartare, butternut squash soup and all of their special salads. Their menu selection always has many vegan choices. The prices are great and the staff is excellent. Great take out as well as eat in.

C C.

Yelp
Cute ambience, large inviting bar. We enjoyed the shrimp scampi pizza and the black bean burger with fries. The fried chicken dish came over cooked with tough chicken so we had to send it back. The staff was very accommodating and enjoyable!

Kara S.

Yelp
We ordered the ahi tuna poke and the salmon. Both were delicious! Great service and a great meal. I would recommend.

Yelp
Food is AMAZING. I highly recommend the house fennel sausage pizza and the truffle fries!!! Best pizza I've ever had. The atmosphere is amazing!!
google avatar

Emma W.

Yelp
The cheeseburger was one of the best I've had, so juicy, cooked to my perfection, just enough salt so you can taste it. The fries on the other hand, I'm personally not a fan of having the potato skin still on the fries so I didn't like them. But I also rate water when I go to restaurants and I give this water a 5/10 because one, I was given a paper straw (that made the water rating go down drastically) two, the glass of water was small, but the taste was good, you could definitely tell it was yucky tap water. And I got a slice chocolate cake, and that was impeccable. Overall, I love this place it's great

D P.

Yelp
Our waitress was great! We had a party of 9. Drinks were delicious. Appetizers were perfect! Crab cakes were spot on and well seasoned. I loved that they weren't fried. The seafood was great, but they also had other options for those in our party that didn't eat seafood. Very reasonable prices too. We will definitely go back again when in town.

Yelp
We had an excellent date night this past weekend sitting at the bar with Roxy. Friendly staff, delicious food and excellent service. The Brussels sprout appetizer, ahi poke, and fennel sausage pizza are amazing! Will be back soon!

Yelp
This was our last meal our Pre-quarantine. It was delightful to see the Jack Tar staff back. Supremely friendly, accommodating, and overall, great vibe. The burgers were as good as I remember. Beer was cold, selection was excellent. We had a wonderfully relaxing, well-attended dinner and look forward to going back!

Jac P.

Yelp
Wonderful environment, staff, and food. Always a treat when they have the outdoor open.
google avatar

Yelp
Our server was excellent (Eli, I think). Attentive and friendly. We had the bleu cheese homemade potato chips to start. Very good, but asked for extra bleu cheese sauce. My friend devoured her blackbean burger, and my Caesar salad was very good.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
To go I ordered the rib eye steak. Friendly staff. Excellent meal. The outside dining area was fairly busy and looked great. I will definitely eat at Sea Salt more often.

Madison F.

Yelp
Delicious foods great service. I am vegan and they were very accommodating to me, altered a pizza so I could have it, it was delicious. friendly staff as well!

Yelp
This is by far the best restaurant in Marblehead. It's a local favorite with absolutely delicious entrees, pasta, and American Fare. They have great local craft brews and the service is always attentive and friendly. Whenever I make it down to Marblehead I always head over here. If you even thinking about going here for dinner, do it! You will never be disappointed!

Jonathan T.

Yelp
Great food, great service, overall an excellent experience. Hosts are friendly and inviting, waitstaff are attentive. Owners were on sight and feel like family. Would recommend to anyone.

Harry S.

Yelp
Ate at Sea Salt last night and it was really incredible! The brussel sprout appetizer had a lot of flavor. I had the Rib Eye which was perfectly cooked and the onion jam on top was a nice touch. My girlfriend had the Vegetable Risotto and it was real creamy and delicious. Highly recommend. Our server (Mo) was very pleasant to deal with as well. Overall, 10/10!

Matthew L.

Yelp
Wonderful time. It was the perfect spot for a date with my girlfriend the other night. Extremely friendly staff, delicious food and very safe with all safety measures taken for COVID-19 including masks, glass dividers and distancing of 6 ft or greater.

Chris H.

Yelp
Excellent! I love the black bean burger, entrees, etc. Really nice owners and great food. It's been one of my local go to spots.

Camila R.

Yelp
Came in for a drink and apps. The bartender Jay gave great recommendations for food, he was really nice and welcoming. He gave recommendations for best wine to go with the food, enjoyed his company and the food was delicious.

Julie L.

Yelp
Great meal tonight at Sea Salt. We were huge Jack Tar fans so we were thrilled to see the old owners back again. Tonight was our 2nd time dining here. The first night we had burgers, wings and autumn salad--all fabulous. Tonight we had fried chicken with a side of fries. The chicken was tender and had a mild kick to it. Came with greens and cheddar grits. We had the cream brûlée for dessert. Another great meal. Love the ambience and service always top notch.
