Yelp
As many of my Yelp friends here have said, we have to consider that Seabirds is a vegan restaurant when giving it a rating. I wish there were a more nuanced system on Yelp but this time I will just do what I occasionally do and set my own parameters, from 1 to 10.
Let's start with the spectacular menu and food, a solid 10 -- both are exceptional in every way. The offerings are many and varied, the flavor the best, the presentation fresh and appetizing. Honestly, we said it may be the best vegan food we have ever tasted, and actually one of my friends said, "the best food, period." I list what we tried via my pictures.
Service: 10 - everyone seamlessly shared taking care of us, from the reception area to the beverages, to sides and mains. Friendly, warm, helpful, and informative (we asked questions and got thoughtful answers), they were always right there when we needed them. Trinidad was our main server and she was superb.
Atmosphere and vibes -- 7. The environment inside is just a step or two above a hospital cafeteria. I hate saying that because I can see thought went into the appointments, e.g., warm wooden tables, huge windows (only in front - the back is a bit dark and isolated), comfortable benches with cushions and pillows -- all clean and cheerful. But, somehow it is lacking the sparkle and liveliness that the menu and food deserve. More fairy lights, maybe a neon sign or two, more plants, and a better way to disguise the utility areas, including the doors to the kitchen -- sort of dingy.
Accessibility -- 8-ish. We almost didn't see it as it shares a space with a nameless Starbucks. There is a pleasant patio outside but I am not sure who, outside of locals, would drive to Seabirds Kitchen. We did because I want to sample every meat-free restaurant in the greater Los Angeles area, eventually and Seabirds has great and well deserved reviews.
Neighborhood -- 8-ish again. Los Feliz is quirky. Above Los Feliz Boulevard are the tony Hollywood crowd and their compounds. Below, the hipper, grungier, more informal boho-cool people (and believe me, I relate to and identify with both genres). The drawback of the latter is a rather relaxed approach to urban hygiene. You are going to experience odors on your way to your great meals that are less than appetizing, shall we say.
Still, I love the area, have many favorite places in Los Feliz and will be adding more reviews. It is a tree-filled, older neighborhood with some down home charming digs (that still cost a King's ransom to own or rent). On a cool, sunny, breezy day as we enjoyed this weekend, Hillhurst is a perfect place to shop and eat and stroll.
The real star here is Seabirds and its amazing food. We will definitely be returning multiple times to try it all.
