The 12 Hottest Restaurants in Charlotte, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"This shiny new restaurant — chef Jonny Cox’s first solo endeavor as chef and owner — will have Charlotteans driving north to Lake Norman to slurp an oyster or five. It’s a 10-table seafood shack meets grandma’s coastal cottage, featuring an inviting oyster bar and vintage decor unafraid of color, pattern, and personality. On the table, get the plump, grilled octopus and the crispy rock shrimp larb. And then, amidst the sea of sea creatures, is the surprising, somewhat random, lamb pappardelle ragu, which is homey and fresh." - Kayleigh Ruller

This place is a gem. I grew up on the gulf coast and always skeptical about seafood this far inland but this place blew me away. We had the opportunity to sit at the bar facing the kitchen and it was so cool to watch the back of house prepare dishes. The service and our drinks were on point. We tried the oysters various ways & the herb grilled oysters were AMAZING. I’ve had all kinds of oysters in different styles and these were unique and delicious. We followed it with a couple of small plates, the scallop toast and sea bass cheeks. I’ve had scallops, I’ve had sea bass, but I have never had them prepared this way and I was blown away. We topped off our meal by sharing the grouper over succotash and I know I’ve bragged about everything else we’ve had but this dish was so delicious. The crispness of the fish paired with sweetness of the corn and brightness of the other vegetables was perfection. 13/10, bring your family & friends!

This is one of the best meals I have ever had! When we got there, we were greeted so nicely by the hostess. The restaurant was busy, nice vibe and decor. Our server joe was outstanding! He educated us on the menu, and let us take our time and was also extremely attentive during the whole meal. The Caesar salad was amazing. Get the lamb ragu- It was absolutely fabulous! For our main meals, I had the scallops which were so amazing and the shrimp in the risotto were great. My husband had the swordfish and he loved his meal. For dessert we had a delicious lime meringue treat which was light, great texture and delicious. Also, the bill was reasonable for all the high quality food and drinks we had.

I came here for my early birthday dinner. We visited Daniel-San once so I was familiar with the space and location. The remodel is great and truly brings a high end, nautical vibe to the small space. Our server was very friendly and attentive, answered all of our questions and gave us spot-on recommendations. The food was delicious. My fiancé had the steak and it was cooked perfectly to his liking. I had the flounder and grits, delicious and very flavorful since it had okra and sausage. We tried the oysters, fresh and yummy. And finally, they added a key lime dessert for me which we loved. Tangy and sweet. The space is quite small so be advised if you are looking for a quiet setting - the table next to us was boisterous so I had to lean in and speak up when conversing with my date. The bar section looks gorgeous and will be my pick next time I go. This restaurant is well-suited for a milestone celebration, business lunch/dinner, or simply to level up from your casual fried fish type of meal!

I finally made it! I am so happy to see a new seafood restaurant take over this space. As a Davidson resident, Cornelius is so close. We hardly notice the city limits. Just a short drive from our lovely town. The owners of Seaboy transformed this old building into a spectacular dining space. We have always loved the old front porch. They also built a small but impressive bar & their dining space in the back. Our server Megan was a delight, and Winter really knows how to treat customers with her southern charm & hospitality. I noticed that the powder rooms have been upgraded & are nicely decorated with vintage sea themes, luxury soaps, lotions & lovely candles. We also got to meet Chef Jonny & he’s really nice & passionate about making delicious food. He highly recommended the yellowfin crudo, we also ordered the lobster Mac & Truffle & the candied beets. Full disclosure, I cannot see lobster and the words, Mac or cheese and not order it. There were also two desserts and we tried the cheesecake which is sourced from Joan’s Bakery & Deli in Charlotte & it was scrumptious! We topped it all off with champagne. We recommend Seaboy for their exceptional service and food. I may need to try more off their menu next time. I’ll be sure to share with our Davidson community & neighbors. Seaboy checks all the marks! Amazing how it has this homey/warmth feel but also modern, close and personal areas but you also have open space on the front porch but they all interconnect so well! All that to draw you into the beautiful food. Everything had flavor and was well balanced, so I recommend trying something here you don’t you usually order because it was that well executed. The service was the cherry on top where you know you are well taken care of. My wife and I love to find new places to eat and I must say, get here quick before the word spreads.

Where to begin - Seaboy is one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in a long time. It is definitely one of the best restaurants in the Charlotte area. I have been twice and have gotten numerous dishes - there is not a single thing I wouldn’t reorder. Food is high-quality, the flavors are incredible, and presentation is beautiful. I love sitting at the counter and watching the kitchen, they were even kind enough to let us try the scallop toast on my last visit, which was delicious as well. The chefs are so kind and friendly, and the servers are all wonderful and attentive. Even the drinks are incredible - we loved both our cocktails and mocktails. What we ordered this visit: little gem Caesar (forgot to take a picture), grilled oysters - herb, bacon, and Cajun, yellowfin crudo, crispy skate bites, crab and chorizo croquettes, PEI mussels, lamb ragu, scallop toast (compliments of the chef), and cheesecake (not pictured). I would reorder everything, but my favorites are probably the Cajun and bacon grilled oysters, yellowfin crudo, and the crab and chorizo croquettes. Last time we went, we ordered several of these items plus the crab dip and crispy sea bass cheeks. Next time, I plan to get an entree because they all look amazing, but I wanted to try as many things as possible on these first few visits. This is such a beautiful date-night spot and a great spot to go with some girl friends. This was the best addition to the LKN area - they truly blew my expectations out of the water. I am so impressed with everything the chef is doing at this restaurant and can’t wait for my next visit!

Very hospitable staff. Creative dishes. Delicious and well prepared! Immaculate dining area and kitchen. The owner was hands on and the rest of the staff were amazing! We celebrated my sister and her fiance's upcoming wedding tonight and could not have chosen a more intimate dining spot. Will be back as soon as we can!

Ordered tons of stuff to share amongst the table and loved every single plate. Oysters, caesar salad, crudo, lobster mac, mussels, croquettes, tilefish, scallops, and key lime dessert, along with wine and cocktails - all phenomenal. Cozy, quaint setting and excellent service to complement the incredible food. Flawless experience. Pricy, but worth a visit.

Yelp
My husband and I have visited Seaboy three times now, and we've vowed to return at least monthly. We are fans of tapas with big flavors, and Seaboy is so good that they deserve to join our regular rotation. The restaurant itself is small, with only ten tables in the back room (reservation only) and eight tables outside, along with several tables/seats in the bar area (no reservation required). Because they are so small, we are glad they offer earlier reservations (starting @ 4pm) for us early birds who enjoy eating when restaurants are less crowded. We've been able to get seating in the bar without a reservation, too! We have tried seven of their dishes, and here's how I'd rank them - Repeat Dishes (in order of favorites) * Lamb ragu - This dish is a favorite, and it's gotten better each time we've had it. If I came with friends and only got one dish, this is what I'd get without a doubt. * Tuna crudo - Definite repeat, and probably the best tuna crudo we've had anywhere, especially because of big flavors imparted by the Asian chili oil. * Sea bass cheeks/crispy skate wing - Definite repeat with whatever fish they have on rotation. We love their homemade tartar sauce, the light and crispy coating, and the quality of their fish. * Shrimp Skewers - This dish is full of flavor! * Scallops with Rock Shrimp Risotto - Our only large plate, this dish was served with three large scallops and perfectly cooked--and seasoned--risotto. On the Fence * Candied beets - This was a large portion for sharing and tasty, but it could have used more candied walnuts. Skip Next Time * Crab and chorizo croquettes - These were large and well-filled. However, we preferred the other dishes we discovered over this one. Seavoy's drinks are well-prepared with great care, and if you request something off the menu, you'll likely get a special creation by the mixologist. The Bulletproof Boulevardier & jazzed up French 75 were some of the best we've ever had! Service has always been impeccable, and the dishes were timed well enough that we never had more than one at one time. The plates also looked like a lot of care was factored into the presentation. They gave us fresh plates after our courses, which I really appreciated. I do wish they offered tableside payments via Apple Pay--or at least via a QR code. However, that won't deter us from being regulars! They have recognized us each time we've had a repeat visit. I love their attention to food, service, and hospitality, and am so glad we have such a great restaurant close to home!

Yelp
Very nice seafood restaurant in the heart of Cornelius. The service was really great and the ambiance is clean and lively as you enter the restaurant. It was a bit challenging trying to park but we lucked out. We sat in the back right of the restaurant with three other tables and it was very loud. The food was very fresh but over salted in my opinion. One of the two drinks we ordered wasn't quite right, but we enjoyed it anyway. Overall this was a very good experience.

Yelp
We have been eyeing this restaurant from across the street for months. I'm so happy that we finally made a reservation and gave it a shot. This restaurant has such a cool, funky vibe. The hostess was so welcoming and projects an era of we've got you and you're going to have a wonderful dining experience this evening. The menu was just a page of the most delicious, memorable attention to detail options that will make you want to come back and experience all of them very soon! The entire staff assisted us with water, filling wine glasses, setting, cleaning plates and serving the most delectable dishes that we had chosen. We visited with another couple and opted for 3 appetizers and 2 dinners. You know it's a great place when you're talking about coming back as you're exiting the restaurant and not even off of the front porch yet.

Yelp
Amazing food, service & cocktails...just try it!! So glad we don't have to trek down to Charlotte for this gem.

Yelp
Absolutely spectacular restaurant. Every dish was on point... everyone that works there is great and happy to be there.. all the patrons left beyond satisfied. Good music too. Kent had great recommendations, conversations, and even some interesting history on a few of the dishes.

Yelp
Hidden treasure. Don't deal with Charlotte, drive the short mile to Cornelius. This area alone has great places to dine and have a drink. This place has it all. From vibe, ambiance and food. The owner/chef has taken great concern to deliver both a comfortable place to dine, but puts as much effort into what goes into your stomach. The place is amazing. You can feel his passion through the entire space. This is my favorite seafood place.

Yelp
Came here on a whim after driving by and was impressed. Excellent food quality! Attentive service and pleasant atmosphere! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Update: our 2nd time to Seaboy was just as remarkable. Peter our server was well trained & attentive. He recommended the Halibut Cheeks as an appetizer. Never had Halibut Cheeks, and delicious they were! Two large cheeks, lightly battered served with a lemon tartar sauce, along with a grilled half a lemon drizzled with balsamic that we squeezed over top. My goodness what a treat. Our main courses were....again....the Tuna. It is outstanding in our opinion. The tuna is cooked & seasoned perfectly and those fried then sautéed potatoes are the bomb. I've talked about those potatoes to so many people. They complement the tuna perfectly. We also ordered the Pompano fish. It's pan grilled with a chopped apple slaw along with cilantro served on top of the fish. It had the perfect amount of salt and seasoning. And for dessert we shared the Lemon Curd with graham crackers and topped with a meringue with sea salt and grated lemon topping. We left once again thinking this is the best restaurant in this area. We had reservations thankfully. The place was packed by 6:30.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of dining here on a beautiful Saturday evening and was able to sit out on the Patio as a walk in as I arrived early. The service was excellent - they treated me like I was a food critic with the level of attentiveness and detailed descriptions of their dishes. I had their tuna crudo, which was one of the best tasting dishes I have had- I cannot wait to go back and order it again. I also had the oysters and crispy fish small plate- everything was presented wonderfully, and the fish had just the right amount of batter to fish ratio. The meal ended with a complimentary glass of sherry to top it off. Will DEFINITELY be putting this on the regular rotation!

Yelp
First visit & can't wait to go back! Sat outside on the porch for dinner which is such a relaxing nice atmosphere. Our server Kent was top notch. He definitely made our visit over the top! We tried the grilled oysters, yellowfin crudo, sea bass cheeks and croquettes (a must have) to start. We split the scallop entree - which was my overall fav! Such a great addition to our area & so happy to support such a great crew and chef!

Yelp
Amazing service, great ambiance and the food is by far the best in the Lake Norman area. The portions are big and the service is bigger! Love this spot!

Fantastic new restaurant in Cornelius. Amazing service, excellent food! We will be back. Joe gave great service along with everyone else.

Yelp
Impeccable service! From the hostess to the bar folks to the waiter, super friendly people. The vibes inside were wonderful too, from the windows to the walls to the tiny fish on the tables. We got the branzino, the croquettes, some oysters, and a skate wing. All were excellent. Although I'd particularly recommend the branzino and the croquettes. We will definitely be coming back here!

Yelp
Amazing!! Incredible food and terrific service -- can't wait to go back! We had the tuna crudo, grouper cheeks, little gem caesar, scallops and grilled tuna. All amazing!

Yelp
Our new favorite! Our waiter (Kent) was amazing, the food was over the top delicious and fresh, great vibe, comfortable. What an outstanding restaurant!

Yelp
Loved, loved, loved this place! Casual atmosphere with a gourmet touch. I met the chef/owner as the seating was limited and my husband and I were offered a seat at the chef's counter. I highly recommend it. It isn't your normal, fried, fishcamp, fare@

Yelp
This restaurant is a diamond in the rough. Absolutely, great service and the food is amazing. From the appetizers to the small dish and the large dish, you will not be disappointed. Seaboy provides high-end cuisine and a small town charm which can't beat!

Yelp
We kept forgetting to try Seaboy, and wondered 'could there really be a good seafood place outside Charlotte?' But we finally tried it tonight and were blown away - it was incredible! The patron next to us, a ships captain, at the counter said he'd been there nine times already - they just opened 4 months ago. My wife grew up in New England and she's had ocean fresh seafood hundreds of times. We had a Bourbon Boulevardier & and Old Fashioned. Then the Yellowfin Crudo, better than the crudo at Kindred. Then Scallop Toast, excellent. I had the Blackened Swordfish and she had the Scallops, both incredible, with a glass of Willamette Pinot Noir. We finished with their deconstructed Key Lime Pie dessert and chocolate cake. EVERYTHING was outstanding, we don't have to drive into Charlotte (Fin & Fino or Sea Level NC which are both very good, Seaboy is even better) for upscale seafood anymore! Service matched the food, perfect pace, thank you Joe. We will go back often, and tell all our foodie friends.

Robyn J.

Yelp
This was our second time. The food was AMAZING!!!! The service was over the top! Kent makes you feel right at home. We were celebrating a birthday, and they made it so special. Thanks so very much

Charlie P.

Yelp
I went this weekend with family from out of town and everyone loved it. Only great things to say about the wonderful food and charismatic service. We sat in the back dinning room and it's perfect for groups of 4-6. Will be back soon because I have not stopped thinking about the sea bass cheeks, lamb pasta, croquettes and scallops with risotto.

Lynnie W.

Yelp
Absolutley wonderful dinner tonight. We had a wonderful Pino Noir to start with a lovely scallop appetizer, followed by the Branzino sea bass with a side of special potato salad ( warm and seared red potatoes). Our waiter, Kent, was fantastic, well informed and entertaining. Everything was a special presentation. Desert was delicious chocolate cake. WE SHALL RETURN and THANK YOU SEABOY!

Adam D.

Yelp
10/10 incredible experience and food. Feels casual but service and food is elegant and top notch

Michael D.

Yelp
Local Guide Chandler Y and her Husband took me and my wife here and we had an incredible meal. Our favorites were the croquettes, the halibut cheeks and the halibut main. I think my favorite meal I've had in the Lake Norman area. I highly recommend.

Allie J.

Yelp
Excellent service, beautiful restaurant, and spectacular seafood! Every dish we tried was stellar. Loved the crudo, flounder, and croquettes! Will be going back!

Yelp
I have to say for a restaurant that just opened a few weeks ago...they are performing at a very high level! We sat at the bar and enjoyed one of each flavor of the grilled oysters and they were spectacular. Plump, beautiful oysters with creole, herb and bacon/Fresno chili toppings that were light in texture but brightly flavored. Some of the best oysters I have ever eaten!Fried skate wing with charred lemon tartar sauce was a light and delicious. The Little gem Caesar, which can be ubiquitous these days, was 5-6 premium ingredients that showcase the chefs ability to balance flavors. It's one of the first times I finished the salad and it left me wanting more. The candied beets, served warm with a smattering of pecans was so good, I used my spoon to ensure every beet was bathed in the delicious glaze. We finished with the lamb ragu, which was richly flavored with merguez sausage. The homemade pasta was a bit toothsome but this meal already had me preparing for my next visit. The bartender did a great job of coursing out the various dishes and the support staff was very attentive. It is a cute restaurant that has kept the charm of the original old house.

Gilbert J.

Yelp
Great experience, food and atmosphere is amazing. And drinks are fantastic. Service is the best!

Yelp
My wife and I went for an early dinner on the official opening night. Chef Jonathan, Manager Keith, and server Peter ALL did an outstanding job! The staff worked together as if they had been open for a long time. Everyone was fully engaged, appreciative of our presence, engaging to interact with... and that is just the staff. The food was beyond expectation and reasonably priced. We started with the Roasted Beets and Crab Croquet small (not so small) plates. Both were exceptional and delivered promptly. We split our second course - the Yellowfin Tuna entree which was perfectly prepared and exceptional in every way. Peter did a great job helping us select a wine with dinner and making sure that everything was perfect. He tempted us with a Key-lime/meringue tart for dessert that was tasty and light and a nice cap off to of an excellent experience. This is one of those rare restaurants where they make a point of getting to know you and making you feel welcome. That combined with incredible food will ensure their success for a long time to come. We are so happy to welcome you to our neighborhood! Joe & Uschi... Davidson residents.
