Best Charleston Bars Lounges | Eater Carolinas

"Johns Island bar Seanachai may look like a traditional Irish pub, but the drinks go far beyond pours of whiskey and beer. Owner Gerry Keiran visits the Farmers’ Market every weekend (when in season) to draw inspiration for his ever-changing “cocktail of the week.” The menu also lists classics next to newer creations for the more adventurous palate." - Erin Perkins

The bartender was also the owner. Very attentive and nice. Our meals took a little longer than expected, but they were delicious. My friend absolutely loves the meatloaf! When you get the french fries- ask for gravy on them or on the side...Mmmmmm

Google
The little hiding piece of perfection was awesome! Food, we had banners and corned beef, was delicious. Bartender was constantly making sure we were good. Servers was friendly and helpful. Other than the perfect lighting, great selection and staff my only thought was some Irish music would have set a better tone. Side note : save a little room for a small frozen yogurt next door. They staff was great too and their yogurt delicious! Thank you for the experience.

Google
This bar is an incredible place for some amazing cocktails and a wide selection of whiskeys. It has a calm and almost low-light atmosphere inside, and the walls are decorated with interesting posters and stories. The drinks here are very good, and they do not skimp on the alcohol. The prices are fitting for the quality as well. If you're hungry, they do have a delicious menu as well. There is something for everyone here, but do understand that you should be ordering cocktails and whiskey... beer and wine not so much. The only downside is that it can feel a bit cramped inside. Apart from that, I highly recommend coming here for drinks.

Google
This brunch is not for sissies. It is the real deal. Irish influence on every dish and beautifully prepared and packed with flavor. I will be back and often.

Google
Great freaking meatloaf. The Irish guy behind the bar seemed to care if I liked it as well. Serviced was good. Very friendly and made it a point to ask my name. Been back 3 times since.

Google
From the West Ashley area and first time in here. I'm glad we stopped in. They have a great assortment of Bourbons from all over and can make anything you want. Great beer list, and they have a good assortment of draft beer. I was in awe. Bartender Matt was over the top. They have an outside patio where bands play. You can smoke back there. I'm going to try it out when they have a band.

Google
We went here on Mother's Day for dinner and the food was delicious and manager friendly. However, the place smelled like urine outside and indoors, not sure if they're having a plumbing issue or this is a common thing. Our waitress also acted annoyed that we were there and disappeared after we had gotten our food, we asked manager for check because she had not been seen for about a half hour. Drinks & food were pretty good but probably wouldn't go back just over the smell.

Google
I've been to pubs in the UK and Europe, and this is the only place in the US that compares. The atmosphere was spot on; calm and fun. There was not a TV in sight, which was exactly what my husband and I wanted. We went here for drinks and ended up coming back the next night for date night. We both got the fish & chips. It was a massive serving but delicious none the less. The whisky menu at this place was impressingly extensive, and I loved all of the drinks we had.

Yelp
Sweetest, most empathetic female bartender... ever! Cannot wait to come back to John's Island to visit this establishment again! Janet, CT

Yelp
Lively and friendly local Irish Pub. Tasty cocktails, shepherds pie and veggie options. Glad they are close to where I live in Johns Island SC

Yelp
Great atmosphere and the whisky selection is huge. Food is good traditional Irish. Fun time.

Yelp
Great beer selection, burgers and bar food . Take a look at the authentic Irish wooden bar, shipped to US That alone is worth it. Since I don't eat pork I would prefer more options , otherwise well worth try this Johns Island classic.

Yelp
Great service, nice crowd, polite bartenders, and the food was great. The fried chicken sliders were sooo yummy. The cocktails were yummy as well. Too bad they were out of the Sunday fried chicken dinner!
google avatar

Yelp
We live on Johns Island and love coming here. It feels like a real pub. Not a television is sight. You have to talk to your friends. Beer selection is great. Food is excellent. Service friendly. Parking ample. What else can one ask for? 10/10.

Yelp
I try not to hype things too much in reviews, but Seanachai just served me the best meatloaf I've ever had in my life! They make it with ground beef, pork, and lamb, and it was tender, juicy, and filled with flavor. My friend said he had eaten there several times, and every item he's had had been memorable. As far as drinks they had a special, a wonderful take on the mojito that went down real easy. Their bar is epic. The layout - long bar on the left, booths on the right, long and narrow room, covered in dark wood. Also an outdoor area if you walk straight through to the back. Take note, their happy hour is a little shorter than previously mentioned in other reviews, it's now 4-5:30.
google avatar

Stephan C.

Yelp
Still an awesome spot! The meatloaf is simply delicious. Whew! And it's dog friendly out back.

Yelp
We have tried three different times to order takeout from Seanachai and have had no luck. The first time they had a pop up menu, the second time they were closed for a private event + the third time they told us they just weren't accepting takeout orders that night. This totally could be bad luck, and we picked the wrong 3 days to try, but felt very frustrating. Would be maybe helpful if somehow the restaurant could indicate that on Yelp or biz profile if this is something that routinely happens for them.

Yelp
Food amazing, service topnotch, tater tots, spectacular. Very cozy bar, great variety of liquor, outside dining also. Steak frites the best. Have I said enough? Go there. You will be surprised. Frank G

Yelp
We were staying at a local resort while in town for six days, and tired of the overpriced and crowded restaurants on Kiawah. We stumbled onto Seanachai totally by accident; someone recommend Maybank Highway in John's Island as a place with a lot of good eateries, and we saw Seanachai and decided to stop in. Wow, what a great choice. We both have little experience with mixed drinks, but the bartender guided us through some choices and delivered some really tasty cocktails, possibly the best we've ever had. I had the terrific tasting Shepherds Pie and my partner had the vegetable sauté with chicken. Both were delicious. We were in Kiawah for six days and came here for dinner twice! The second time was for Friday fish fry. Super tasty. The vibe is great, the staff friendly and amazing, and the place is popular and crowded, but in a good way. Tables were short, but a couple seated at a four top made up of two smaller tables split their table so that we could have a place to sit without waiting. It was a perfect place to find people like us. Overall, a fun and flavorful experience. We live 700 mikes away, but can't wait until we go there again.

Yelp
Cozy little bar that has some great food as well. Atmosphere was perfect - great place to grab a drink with a friend and sit down at a booth for dinner. Service was great and ample parking is available!

Laurie K.

Yelp
Great food in a pub atmosphere. Shepherds pie, fries, burgers were all excellent. Low key casual atmosphere with good selections of beers
google avatar

Victoria B.

Yelp
A dark, traditional pub with Irish fare that's consistently.. filling and Irish. The staff here are great and this place is low key but food never blows me out of the water. The mules are the best in town though - they make their own ginger beer.
google avatar

Jeremy C.

Yelp
So this is probably going to become my regular bar. If you're going here expecting fancy fancy, then you're going to be disappointed. But if you're looking for a dark bar, with lots of wood, and lots of great whiskeys, bourbon, and other spirits then this is your place. I believe there are around 12 different draft beers, and about 7 wines being poured. They make good cocktails too. If you hungry they have a good menu. A few flatbreads, Meatloaf, bangers and mash, fish and chips, etc. There's a nice large patio outback with a fire pit for great times enjoyed outside. The staff have always been friendly and had time to share a word or two. A Great Irish bar!
google avatar

Jess W.

Yelp
So far I have only popped in for a couple cocktails, but the outdoor space is cozy and beautiful & often has live music. I absolutely loved the vibes out there! I'll report back once I return to try the food, but have heard wonderful things.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great little spot on Johns Island. The indoor ambiance is very Irish and dark. They have a great bar. We sat outside since it was a beautiful evening. They have a great outdoor spot that can seat many. I ordered the Seanachai burger. It was very good and juicy. I loved the aioli on it. The fries were great too. I ordered a side of gravy to dip them in and it hit the spot. Definitely stop here for some drinks or a great meal!
google avatar

Max M.

Yelp
An enjoyable, but thin like a shotgun style house, loud "bar with burgers" kind of place. Irish oriented in brews and a bit in the food. Tuesday night is the $12 Seanachi burger (highly recommended with horseradish aoli) that comes with a choice of brew, but the fries or tater tots are $2 extra. Normally on every night but Tuesday. WITHOUT the fries or tots, the $12 burger is $2 off without that side. Complic but good enough for me. We'll be back on another Tuesday! BTW, happy hour is on Monday through Friday from 4 to 6. Enjoy!

Yelp
Seanachai is a Johns Island spot I hit often. I love the dark authentic feeling pub. It's my favorite restaurant to go to on a chilly Charleston evening. Today I went for brunch. The staff was incredible. They all worked as a team to make our experience enjoyable. The food was good. My dad got the combo omelette, which is new to the menu, and joined the clean plate club. So it was obviously good. I got the veggie grit bowl. It was a large serving and I love the goat cheese. The grits were a little dry. I prefer my grits more creamy. But over all good flavor. Be sure to go for happy hour and get discounted apps and $5 mules! They have the best ginger beer in town!

Betsy M.

Yelp
Fun place. Staff is accommodating Can get very busy when they have special events and menus. Worth a try!

David T.

Yelp
Great food and drinks. Traditional Irish food and good atmosphere. Chill and low key.
google avatar

Opal D.

Yelp
The back patio is in desperate need of mosquito treatment--I was eaten alive back there. Was surprised to have smokers hanging out there too. Service good, menu okay.

Deborah K.

Yelp
The food is great and service is excellent! The only thing I wish they had is iced tea not a fan of can sodas
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
I've always heard good things about Seanachai and it did not disappoint. They have a huge drink selection and phenomenal food. I ordered the Corned beef Reuben and It was the best Reuben I've ever had. I will be back just for this sandwich and to try their other food choices.
google avatar

Shannon N.

Yelp
We tried this spot for brunch and the food was very good. The only complaint is that the waitress assumed we knew the "drill" and schooled us a on how we should have sat ourselves and grabbed a menu for us when we walked in. We're new, what can I say lol. But now that we got it - we will be back! I thought the Bloody Mary was excellent - had a little kick to it but a honey/sweeter rim. I can't wait to try to corned beef! Nice location with plenty of parking.
google avatar

Yelp
Bartender, wait staff, food, drinks, ambience are all awesome. Writing extra words to fill the character requirement
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Seanachai has a great vibe! Smaller spot but such a cool atmosphere. Bartenders are great and so is the food. The meatloaf is awesome and so is the bangers and mash- what they're known for. Tuesdays are burger and pint night for $12- it's a great deal!
google avatar

Deb P.

Yelp
Really enjoy this place! Gone a few times now and if you don't mind the bar atmosphere you'll love it. Food is amazing and service is great! Had the burger and meatloaf so far. Will continue to explore the menu!
google avatar

Jill G.

Yelp
Great local bar and restaurant on John's Island! Menu has a good number of options from a burger to corned beef and cabbage. Don't sleep on the meatloaf. The place is small so you might have to wait or go eat dinner at 430 like we did lol
google avatar

Jonny S.

Yelp
Such a cool little hidden gem. Small little pub that has a wide selection of whiskey, and encourages you to get to know the people around you. Great place to go to if you're trying to leave the day behind you. Great atmosphere for relaxing and connecting with others.

Callie C.

Yelp
Great food and drinks during Hurricane Idalia. We have started coming here more and more do the consistent food and great service. We had a tradition of visiting another JI spot during storms but they were closed today. Thanks again for great food and service!
google avatar

Bronwen B.

Yelp
Great place! We stumbled upon this gem when we happened to be in the area and hungry! I wanted to stay away from the typical chain places, and this restaurant fit the bill! They have different specials every day. We stopped in on a Saturday and there was a shepherds pie and pint of Guinness for $10. A steal! The shepherds pie was delicious. Service was great and we just really enjoyed the vibe of this place. I can't wait to stop in again!

Yelp
Seanachai Whiskey & Cocktail Bar on Maybank Highway on Johns Island is a great place to go for drinks and delicious food. I like the laid back atmosphere here where you can relax and enjoy everything. I have enjoyed everything that I have tried on the menu and they have been consistent in their quality.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm very surprised this place has a 5 star rating. Must be lots of Employees and the owner writing them. It was eh at best. The waitress acted like we were putting her out when we asked a question or wanted to order. She actually turned around and walked away when we were mid sentence. Tons of menu items were "out." The waitress wasn't knowledgeable about the liquor at all. She just seemed super annoyed the entire interaction. We tried to order like 7 things and 5 things they didn't have. What we did eat and drink, was ok. Not terrible. But definitely not worth it with such an unfriendly waitress. Won't be going back.

Susan H.

Yelp
Great happy hour! Have the croquets...delish! Bartenders are the best! Just a real, local bar feel

Yelp
Án Seanachaí .. The Irish pub that I've had in my list for about four years.. I managed to frequent last night. It is so authentic and I really did feel like I was back home. A difficult concept to get it just right without overdoing it. It's a small and compact dark wooded pub with a full inventory of alcohol behind the bar. I looked at the rather large menu with Irish & Low Country choices and chose a chicken and Kale Salad with feta. Just Delicious. They also had specials written on chalkboards up on the walls. I could have had something more decadent but I chose wisely. It was pretty busy in here with people eating dinner. They also had live music which added to the ambiance. The staff were super helpful and attentive. Certainly a great spot to take you right back to the Emerald Isle
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
John's island's Maybank Culinary Mile has a lot of hidden gems and Seanachai is one of them. Dinner and drinks for four last night was a great treat. Meatloaf, corn beef and cabbage, fish and chips and the specialty house burger was over the top. Drinks included Guinness and several of the outstanding specialty cocktails. The bourbon menu consist of over 25 selections including Pappy. The Irish whiskey menu is close to 75 bottles. There is a small selection of beers including several local selections. It also has a small patio area. This is definitely on my list for visiting guests who appreciate an Irish pub.
google avatar

Kevin E.

Yelp
This awesome Irish pub is a hidden gem - like finding a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Located in a strip mall on Johns Island, one might think that this is a hole in the wall worth overlooking. Take a chance and go inside and find a warm and inviting pub with decadent dark wood, booths, and high tables. The bar is beautiful and the drinks are delicious. Gerry grows his own herbs and is a cocktail crafter connoisseur. He makes the best gin and tonic EVER and all of the mule drinks are yummy (some are even on happy hour). The curry tater tots rock! Check out the patio - fire pit, darts, corn hole, picnic tables, and fun! Service is super and we always enjoy our time!

Yelp
Ok- Johns Island, I see you! I cannot believe there's now places as ~trendy~ as this on Johns Island. I grew up on Johns Island, but I only come back a few times a year to visit my parents now. I went with my mom for a night cap on a Friday evening on my most recent visit, and we had a really fun experience! We walked in, and the place was packed! They had live music, and we managed to get a seat at the bar. I felt like we were at a bar downtown- who knew the Johns Island nightlife scene was like this now? The ambiance is that of a swanky Irish pub where I'm sure the bartenders would quickly know your name after a visit or two. I also loved that they had outdoor seating with a fire pit. We weren't that hungry, but we ordered the shrimp fritters to share. They were pretty good, but heavier than I imagined. What really wowed me is the drinks. They have a great selection of draft beers, but I especially liked their handcrafted cocktails. The cocktails, the ambiance, and the wonderful service will definitely bring me back to Seanachai on my next visit to Charleston!

Patricia K.

Yelp
We liked The place when we started going there about a year ago. We always sit at the bar. Bartenders were all great. we always order food which is very good, but when we get our tab, they charge us for a drink AND $1 for the mixer! Also, when we order wings, they charge us $1 for the blue cheese! We have told them several times it was unacceptable since the menu does not disclose these extra charges. Some bartenders stopped the extra charges and others claim they have to. we average $100+ per visit at least once or twice per week. We are rethinking this as a regular go to.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
It's nice to be back at Seanachai. Limited seating inside and out. But the food is still FABulous! Jason and Marissa are wonderful owners and very, very consciences about maintaining social distancing and cleanliness. There is a relaxing outside area that is available also. C'mon down!!! You won't be dusappointe The seating at the bar is BACK! Social distancing even at the bar! Well done

Yelp
Would somebody please put me out of my misery and tell me how to pronounce this place's name?! I'm going to assume it's not said the way I think it is. Nonsense aside, this place seemed pretty neat. My experience is a tad limited as I have only been once, for a family event, and didn't visit the patio which feels like a big error on my part. But, the inside of the Bar, the drinks (two Mules), and the food (I only had the croquettes, I think they were) were all fantastic. My mother in law has been a few times and really loves their corned beef. My grand-MIL had the fried chicken sliders and said they were delicious. I got the feeling while I was there that this place is a local favorite hangout. Not sure why, just had a sense about it. More of my nonsense, I suppose.
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Like always everything was delicious. They had a pop up today. Tonight they had Chicken Fats manning the kitchen. I had the kale salad and wings, my hubby had the crispy chicken sandwich. The wings were so good he order more of them. Everything was delicious and the drinks were on point as always. I had the mule and the hubs had a Manhattan and old fashion.
google avatar

Panayota E.

Yelp
Great atmosphere!! Feels just like an authentic bar in ireland! Small little gem of a spot! The only reason I'm giving it four stars is because i thought the fish and chips were decent but there isn't a huge menu selection so if you have dietary restrictions it's kind of hard to choose something! Otherwise great place to hang out and if you can eat meatloaf and shepherd's pie, it feels like this is the right place to go!

Yelp
We visited here the first time on Tue 2/11/20. Seanachai was highly recommended by our niece & husband who live on the island. Seanachai translated from Gaelic means "bearer of old lore", a story teller. This pub is located in a small stip of restaurants & bars. So with that competition you need to be unique, value priced, knowledgeable, friendly, and offer the best service. Seanachai has all of this and more. The owners Marissa & Jason Myers purchased this pub in 2019 from original owner Gerry Kirean. The pub offers 50+ whiskeys & scotch, many imported from Ireland, Scotland, etc. There is a printed list so you can keep track of your tastings. Great selection of Irish favorites & local craft brews on tap. Signature cocktails are made from scratch. Happy Hours are everywhere in Coastal Carolina. Senachai's is among the favorites for locals, snowbirds, & visitors. This Tuesday (4-7pm) the HH special was a pint of Guinness & a burger for $10. Hard to beat that. The burger was the same as is offered on the regular menu. Other HH specials are Sat-shepards pie, Fri-fish & chips, Irish stew, wings. There is also a Sun brunch 10am-2pm. Hours are Mon-Thur 4-10pm, Fri & Sat 4pm-midnight, Sun brunch 10am-2pm. Also check their calendar for local live music. And no TVs-enjoy the music & the craic. We also visited here on Sat 2/15 for dinner, drinks, & music. The following week we visited Th 2/20, F 2/21, Sat 2/22, & Sun 2/23 for brunch. We had 4 adults & 2 preschool kids for brunch. The server "Bar T" set us up w/ coffee & a Bloody Maria. We placed our order for breakfast. My niece, the Mom, requested that the kids be served first as we adults were not in a hurry. This request was handled graciously and the children were eating in 10 minutes. Thank you. There are 13 choices for brunch $10-12 ea. Omelettes, Grit bowls, bangers, french toast, quiche. Mimosas, Bloody Marys (& Marias), & Irish Coffees are served at brunch. This is one of the friendliest pubs we have visited. The staff is exceptional and deserve praises & raises. A hearty thank you to Adam, Matt, Colleen, Rachel, Jesse in the kitchen, & "Bar T". To Marissa & Jason - your staff is certainly a reflection of your commitment to your patrons. Also thank you to Marissa for sending the T-shirt to my wife when they were back in stock after our trip home. A great Irish public house to visited when in the Charleston, SC area. We will be returning to Seanachai's on our annual trip to Johns Island. Thank you & Slainte. Nick Parisi & Liz Farrell, Albany, NY Yes we are a "mixed marriage". LOL

Yelp
Seanachai is right around the corner from our house but we had not yet tried it until my husband found himself craving Shepard's Pie one night. We walked in and the bartender let us know that we could seat ourselves, once we found a seat, she came by to greet us and tell us about the cocktail of the week. Once we ordered the food came out quickly - I enjoyed my chicken sliders and the fries were certainly enough to share between us. My husband really liked the Shepard's Pie saying it was the best he's had, it perfectly filled his craving.
