"Second Generation in Logan Square began as Mini Mott, a fast-casual burger joint from the Mott St. team, but has since transformed into a fantastic full-service restaurant. And while they still have their great burger, that’s no longer the only reason to come here. With its warm, friendly atmosphere and delicious food inspired by the owners’ Asian American background, Second Generation is a go-to spot for everything from date night to when you realize that the only things in your fridge are beer and an old bag of lettuce. photo credit: Kim Kovacik The narrow interior has a modern take on retro design, with things like hairpin chairs mixed with minimalist metallic lamps. But while similarly curated places can feel stiff when you're there, Second Generation has some humanity thanks to friendly service and details like framed family photos paying tribute to the owners’ heritage. There’s a comforting warmth from candlelight, and though you probably don’t want to have dinner with your therapist here, the close tables create a sense of coziness rather than claustrophobia. New American dishes with a sprinkling of Asian influence make up most of their menu. And while some fusion food is as unnecessary and as unwelcome as a call from “spam likely,” everything here is well-executed and has exciting flavor combinations. A must-order is the misoyaki eggplant tartine. Thick meaty slices of eggplant are served on a crusty slice of sourdough, drizzled with rich miso butter and hoisin, and crowned with a gooey onsen egg. But you also shouldn’t miss out on the zesty elote-inspired seared scallops with miso butter and corn. And then there are the always-great staples from the Mott St. universe like the crispy soy-glazed chicken wings covered in everything bagel seasoning. Second Generation's graduation from a neighborhood burger spot to a full-fledged restaurant makes it a welcome addition to Logan Square. There are usually reservations available and walking in isn’t too difficult (though there may be a short wait if the dining room is busy with couples and friends fighting over the last Everything Wing). But chilis, fried shallots, and sesame seeds level things up with extra crunch, spice, and nuttiness. Make sure to use the side of tzatziki liberally to add refreshing tanginess. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Mott Burger Unlike their sister restaurant Mott St. (where you can only get the burger before 7pm) you can always order it here. And just like our friend who listens to us complain about every M. Night Shyamalan movie since The Sixth Sense, we like that it’s always available. It has two juicy patties topped with American cheese, savory miso butter onions, pickled jalapeños, and fried sweet potato frizzles that add the perfect amount of texture. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Misoyaki Eggplant The thick eggplant slices of this vegetarian dish get plenty of umami from mushrooms, miso butter, and hoisin, while a runny onsen egg adds creaminess. It’s served on a slice of sourdough which is not only the perfect sponge, but balances everything out with tartness. Get this. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Sea Scallops We didn’t know we needed elotes with scallops, but Second Generation made us aware of our naivety. The seared shellfish are tender, and full of richness from the miso butter, sweetness from the corn, and a hint of spice from some chili powder. Kalbi Steak Frites The grilled skirt steak has a sweet and savory marinade, is topped with bright chimichurri, and comes with plenty of crispy skinny fries. The tart chimichurri sauce masks the delicious flavor of the meat, so we suggest asking for it on the side." - John Ringor
