Second State Coffee

Second State Coffee is such a cute, quiet, and quaint spot — the perfect place to relax and enjoy a really good cup of coffee. I tried one of their fall drinks, the Sweet Potato Pie latte, and it was delicious! A unique, cozy flavor that wasn’t too sweet and still had a great, rich coffee taste. The atmosphere is calm and inviting, and the barista was very pleasant and welcoming. Overall, a wonderful experience. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area!

This was one of the two coffee shops I chose to visit on our visit to Charleston. Second state was a great experience. The lady who helped us was patient when helping me pick beans that matched my preferences. She even gave me a small discount to taste the brew before buying. She made me feel welcome with my toddler daughter, and I left feeling excited to return again. Coffee was delicious and I felt valued as a visitor. Will be back the next time we’re in town. Thank you!

I’ve never had a savory waffle before and OMG soooo freaking good. This place is awesome and wholesome. I love the fresh plants they have around and the team is really down to earth! I’m Gonna dreeeeeam about this waffle

I got the “coffee crush” off of the winter menu. Now this was not my favorite thing at all. It was truly bizarre. My friend got a regular coffee and it was bangin good. Perhaps the winter menu wasn’t my cup of tea. Giving them the benefit of the doubt with the review.

Best oat milk latte everrr. I didn’t try the waffles, but I’ve heard raving reviews from multiple sources and will be back to try them!

Really good coffee. Friendly staff. Didn't try the food, but the coffee is worth every penny. Great place to start the day off. There are community vibes here. The playlist was also good the day I went. It is a relaxing place.

An insane espresso, so delicious and rich! Also got a pour over to go. Amazing staff and great indoor seating **update: GET the waffles too- churro, deviled egg and cinnamon are incredible!!

Very cute small location. The baristas were kind and whipped up great lattes. Their pastries were also very good and a decent size. This would be a good place to chill or work/study.

I come here at least once a week as my son is in a morning weekend bowling league at Ashley Lanes. The coffee and customer service is ALWAYS good and consistent. I will say the place is on the smaller side but nothing to really complain about and they do have ample outdoor seating. I won't say this is a complaint but just know on Saturday mornings this place and the business center parking lot it is located in gets SUPER busy! It's literally The Hunger Games when it comes to trying to find parking. This isn't Second State's problem as it appears there is a dance studio next door that is the cause for the extra car and foot traffic. Not a deal breaker for myself as I have become used to it and this doesn't affect their coffee or service as things still move at a great and steady pace. Just an FYI if you go on a Saturday and you're asking yourself what is going on?

Met a friend here for morning coffee and a chat, we both intended to work here after but it's a bit loud and lots of in and out so wasn't ideal for that. The coffees were great and came out quick relative to the length of the line. The staff are friendly and efficient. Their scone was really good too! Parking is easy and they have several table options.

Went to Second State for their monthly complimentary coffee tasting they hold on the 2nd of each month. This was an educational session I didn't know I needed. Our educational consultant (Brianna) was very knowledgeable about the varietials of each bean and filled our minds as well as our nose and palates with the great taste of coffee, great information, and a great communal gathering. Really relaxing vibe and cool event. Looking forward to the next session.

Cute spot that's worth searching out. Comfortable, sunny, free WiFi, friendly and skilled staff. Our barista recommended several options and we chose a honey lavender latte that was perfection. My friend had a special request and they were move than happy to accommodate. Nice selection of non coffee options and baked goods (nothing gluten free on our visit but looked great!) with plenty of easy parking up front. We will be back.

Always a good cup of coffee and friendly workers! The desserts are good but I have yet to have one that leaves me saying "I gotta get that again." All in all though super convenient when you're waiting for your kid at ballet.

Arriving at this location on the edge of town (out of several locations) yielded a somewhat limited food menu. I wasn't up for sweets, but the idea of a peach-flavored matcha latte was interesting enough. On the scale of what it might have been, it was more matcha than peach, plenty bitter with just a hint of the local fruit du jour. Not a large beverage, but it was ready quickly. I may try one of their other locations if I do find myself more in need of a waffle.

Love their coffee although a large needs to be bigger! LOL! Great store and staff! I go to the one in West Ashley!

This place was cute, nice atmosphere. We split a muffin and had a chai latte and a lavender latte. Interesting menu, I'd return and get the waffles next time I'm in the area

Great coffee, good atmosphere, public restrooms, plenty room to study! Kind service, very inviting.

MM and myself here for waffles. I'm doing Prosciutto and Greens version. Mark a Cinnamon Apple. And of course our Americano and honey. Only one size cups...small. And honey is the syrup type. I'm still ok however, eagerly waiting for the waffles. Cute place and hidden behind a row of trees in a small strip mall setting. Nice seating situation. Gzzz best waffles I've ever had. Texture was...healthy!! Strange thing...no maple syrup. They did bring some maple glaze after our begging/crying!! And they make it with maple syrup and powdered sugar. Apparently didn't want to share any syrup though!! Was ok. The glaze was pretty good anyway. The idea of no syrup is because the waffle variations are covered with other good stuff. Lovely lasses attending and a nice guy doing kitchen duty who came out for short visit.

This place is definitely quantity over quality, just trying to pump out as many drinks as fast as they can. My espresso came out boiling hot, making hard to drink, it should never be that hot coming out of the machine. They didn't have any clean cups because they couldn't keep up with the rush so they asked me if they could put it in a to go cup. I also got a cold brew and it has an off flavor that isn't right, I suspect they haven't cleaned the lines in the tap system in quite some time, but that's just a theory. The ceiling has black mold all over it, directly above their work station. Very sloppy place over all, go elsewhere if you're serious about coffee, if you're in a rush, this place is a slightly better than Starbucks.

I've come here several times and it's better every time! The coffee is quality beans roasted perfectly. They don't have a ton of flavored syrups because all the syrups they have are made in-house so they're very fresh and good. The baristas are friendly, informed, and professional. The atmosphere is really nice and welcoming. They have phenomenal snacks and even sell merch and coffee beans to go. I love it here!

I already wrote an extensive review back when this location was Broom Wagon, but I figured it should be updated for the takeover by Second State (SS) Pros: the staff has remained just as kind & friendly, and SS kept the delicious waffles from Broom Wagon! Some of our favorites include the deviled egg waffle, the peanut butter & banana waffle, the prosciutto & greens waffle, and the lemon & blueberry waffle (Small) Con: some of my favorite lattes disappeared when SS took over because Broom Wagon made some of their own syrups. We loved the candied ginger and cardamom lattes in particular. Initially, SS kept the candied ginger and got rid of the cardamom. Then, they replaced the candied ginger with a ginger cookie that mostly tasted like cookie, not ginger. That ultimately disappeared too. On our most recent trip, they brought back a cardamom latte, but it was a very floral side of cardamom, not the spice notes of the old cardamom latte. Even though my favorite lattes no longer exist, I s enjoy stopping in for a waffle and a latte (they're still good without my favorite flavors) whenever I am in town, and SS does try to offer new items on rotation. For example, we recently tried the "Blutini" tea latte (iced only). My fiancé really enjoyed it, and while I would not necessarily get it again, it was fun for that day. As long as they keep the waffles, we will keep on returning, and we definitely recommend that you check this location out!

Decided to try Second State's West Ashley location & complete some work. The shop was cute and the employees were so nice. I tried a salted caramel latte with oat milk and their lox and cucumber waffle. My latte was simply one of my favorite I've ever had. It was well balanced and delicious. The waffle I had on the other had was not my favorite. Each component individually was good, but for my liking having all together just simply did not work. Everything tasted fresh- cornbread like waffle, pickled cucumbers, lox, and a cream cheese drizzle. I believe I would try a different waffle next time for sure! My only complaint for a coffee shop was that there was only 1 or 2 outlets that were accessible for patrons to use. I will definitely be back!

Friendly staff that was also very helpful in telling my friend and I some places to go on our girls trip here this past weekend. The coffee was good, be forewarned that you ask for an iced coffee with no ice, there is an upcharge to have them fill the cup to the top. I frown upon places that do this because it means you're not getting a full cup of iced coffee, but I guess in these times everything is priced accordingly. However, the service and vibe is fantastic so I was able to overlook that. I would recommend.

Was on the way to the golf course and drove past this place and decided to turn around and try it and I am so glad I did. Had such a good vibe and the coffee was amazing. I would recommend the churro waffle!

Friendly staff, quick kind service. Very tasty lemon blueberry waffle. Had an Ethiopian wet process that was well prepared and and delivered timely in great shape ... selection of wet process Ethiopia's always puzzles me, they are so good with dry process that tend to have more complex flavors and distinctive fruit notes...4 stars (of 5) for the coffees I had to pick from that day. I roast so I have my biases AND I'll definitely go back there next time I travel thru.

This West Ashley Coffee shop is has delicious coffee and lattes. I scoped by for a honey latte and it was made with love and care. It has plenty of parking and a few tables to work or chat with a friend. Great local spot!

Great cold brew, nice atmosphere. Quiet and comfortable. The employees were nice and efficient. They have an array of different coffee blends to choose from and I haven't tried one that I don't like. I prefer my coffee black as well.

I've been coming to this location for coffee for several years, but it's now under new ownership with a new name. I'm very happy to see that the original menu is still in place, and that they've also incorporated the flavors and treats that Second State is known for. Today I ordered the lavender latte, a drink that I began ordering at their downtown location. It was made quickly and perfectly by one of the baristas. I didn't order any food this time, but several people around me did and it all looked very good and appetizing. Next time I'll order more and will provide feedback on the food, specifically the waffles.

The waffles, y'all, the waffles. Gluten free and amazing. My daughter and I split the lox and cucumber and the lemon blueberry and we couldn't believe how delightful they were. Friendly service and good food. This made our morning!

Absolutely delicious! I had a small, hot, vanilla latte and it was so refreshing to not taste that bitter, burnt aftertaste that can often accompany lattes. True craftsmanship and excellent service. Safe to say I'll be grabbing a cup every time I'm in the area. Can't wait to try some of their other flavors.

Second State Coffee on Ashley Hall Road in West Ashley is a great place to get quality coffee, a drink, or snack any time of the day when you need it. I really like the atmosphere here and all that they have to offer. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating to make sure that you have everything you need.

My favorite coffee shop in Charleston! The coffee was fresh and locally roasted by second state. I even bought a bag of their beans! Milk was steamed to perfection and my friend really enjoyed her peach matcha. Food was great for a small breakfast and tasted good. Staff was super friendly, very sweet people and they were even short staffed but had awesome attitudes. check this place out!

I got a hot vanilla latte and my boyfriend got an iced salted caramel latte (both with whole milk). The barista was very efficient and accommodating when I asked him to make my latte hot instead of iced after I already ordered. The milk foam in the hot latte was awesome, and it had the perfect amount of flavoring. Neither drink was overly sweet and each was very clearly made with care! About $4 a latte.

Great coffee shop! Staff is helpful and friendly and the coffee is great, but don't skip the waffles-especially the the peanut butter honey and banana. The outdoor seating is perfect when the weather's nice.

amazing food and drinks! i had a strawberry matcha with strawberry toppings for their spring break menu and it was amazing. i would definitely recommend this place to anyone that's new to the area or a local as well. customer service was great as well, they really made you feel wanted there and interested in their coffee. The store itself was very clean and had great ambiance, great music! literally amazing :D

Stopped in while on work. Location is a little off the beaten path but the coffee was perfect! Try the salted Carmel mocha.
