Irene’s Place, a Greenpoint Dive Bar, Closes After 44 Years | Eater NY

"After a year in Astoria, Secret Thai Street Food is moving to Long Island and will reopen as Secret Thai Kitchen in a 100-seat storefront at 150 Woodcleft Avenue near Hamilton Street in Freeport. I report that the business had been subleasing a back counter and dining room in H Lopez Marketplace for $4,000 a month; when the market raised the rent to $7,000 and opened the dining area to other customers, co-founder Vasinee Levy refused the offer and decided to relocate. The new spot is slated to open next month with an expanded menu, and the last day in Queens is February 25." - Luke Fortney

New York Is in a Golden Age of Bodega Food | Eater NY

"Fatigued by the full-service restaurant model, the owners of Secret Thai Street Food banded together to open a Thai buffet earlier this year at the back of HLopez Marketplace, using that market’s space as an alternative way to serve food without the overhead of a standalone restaurant." - Emma Orlow

The Secret Thai Street Food Buffet Inside an Astoria Market | Eater NY

"Hidden in the back of a Latin market in Astoria at 30-72 Steinway Street, near 31st Avenue, I found a Thai counter run by three Queens moms — Jalen Lucky, Nisakorn Quispe, and Vasinee Levy — serving daily steam-table specials and a set menu that lets patrons mix-and-match regional Isan entrees for under $20. The food is spicy, refreshing, and intense, loaded with house-made chile paste and vegetables like Thai eggplant and young papaya; a combo of sticky rice and three entrees runs $15.50. Chef Lucky’s gaeng om is a standout: a spicy yet refreshing herbal curry soup studded with dill, yu choy, and zucchini and brightened with pla ra and housemade chile paste. A savory pork-belly stew, palo, offers a counterpoint to that heat with tender chunks of pork belly marinated overnight and braised with boiled eggs in a spice mix of black and white peppercorns, cilantro root, star anise, and cinnamon (Lucky adds pickled lettuce). Other dishes I tried included papaya salad with chunks of raw Thai eggplant, pad prik khing laced with slivers of makrut lime leaf, fish-ball skewers caramelized with tamarind, gang som thickened with ground tilapia and dotted with young papaya and shrimp, plus occasional fried chicken and grilled pork. The spot operates daily from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with about ten brothy, saucy entrees laid out on the steam table and a bright dining area dotted with potted plants and paintings of Thailand." - Caroline Shin

Google
Secret Thai is the best secret on nautical mile! A cute and cozy family owned restaurant if you love Thai food or just want a delicious bite, this is the place you need to be! Like the other reviews have mentioned they do have their own parking lot, which is more of a reason why you should definitely go! They also have a very cute back patio for fun summer vibes! I had the secret Thai chicken wings, which were perfectly cooked very crispy and that secret Thai sauce is out of this world! I also ordered a side of egg fried rice again cooked to perfection. And for dessert, I had the fried ice cream which was also very tasty!

Google
Secret Thai Kitchen did not disappoint! I had the spicy udon and it was perfectly seasoned with so much flavor. The noodles were so delicious that we ended up ordering an extra order to go. My husband had the pineapple fried rice with chicken and loved it as well—great balance of savory and sweet. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
Hands down one of my favorite local neighborhood Thai spots. I’ve been here 5+ times and it’s always consistently great. Their fried snapper is incredible and my favorite dish— perfectly crispy, tender inside, and covered in the most flavorful sauce with fresh veggies. The food, drinks, and teas never miss. You can tell everything is made with care, and it keeps me coming back every time. A true gem in the neighborhood.

Samina C.

Google
The food is absolutely incredible! Family owned and run by a mother and son duo, this spot brings all the best Thai flavors to Long Island from crispy Thai wings and flavorful peanut dumplings to the best garlic pepper calamari I’ve ever had! And don’t even get me started on the Red Curry with Half Duck, absolute must try! Whether you’re in the mood for a chill night out or a cozy date night, this spot’s got you covered with indoor + outdoor seating.

Julie M.

Google
This place sucks. I ordered calamari and they were not fresh. It was extremely breaded and crispy. I was able to snap the calamari into pieces. I do not recommend. I also ordered margaritas. Cheap tequila was used for $13. After complaining about the calamari it wasn’t even reduced off my bill. Not going there again.

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely phenomenal Thai experience! I thought I had a favorite Thai spot locked in—until I came here. From the moment I walked in, everything felt elevated: the cozy ambiance, the attentive service, and most importantly, the food. I ordered the Pad See Eww, and honestly, it was next-level—perfectly balanced, with tender noodles, smoky wok flavor, and crisp, vibrant veggies that brought every bite to life. Everything was fresh! To top it off, I tried the Naree cocktail, and it was the kind of drink that makes you stop mid-conversation just to savor it. Smooth, refreshing, and dangerously easy to love. If you’re a Henny lover this would be your top choice! This place officially dethroned my usual go-to. Everything about the experience hit the mark, and I’ll definitely be back. Highly recommend to anyone who wants Thai food done right—and then some.

Valerie S.

Google
I’m so picky with Thai food and this spot is LEGIT! Ahmee and his staff are absolutely incredible- the recipes are passed down from generation to generation. The new dish, garlic pepper calamari is an absolute MUST!

Google
Secret Thai Kitchen is an absolute gem! The food is packed with authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and perfectly balanced spices. Every dish tastes like it was made with care, and the portions are generous. The staff is warm, welcoming, and always happy to recommend something new to try. The atmosphere is cozy, making it feel like a true hidden treasure. If you’re looking for amazing Thai food and a great dining experience, this is the spot highly recommended

Yelp
Everything was good! Order the Lychee Margherita or Lychee martinis. Duck salad for the salad, not the duck. Parking lot is in the back. Servers are on point.

Yelp
I was the only one there for the lunch special at first . I basically rented the place out myself. Great customer service. Food was so yummy. And the lunch special is a great day!! I also ordered the somtum ( papaya salad ) and it was so good. Delicious ugh. So flavorful. I love how I got asked what spicy level I like with my food because everyone's level of spicy is different. I can't wait to go back for happy house 4-7 Monday - Friday.

Yelp
Waiter was super attentive. Atmosphere can be casual or date night. Food depended on the dish. We had the curry puffs, spring rolls. The curry puffs pastry was flaky. The spring roll dough was a little thick but it had an appropriate amount of vegetables. My husband had Chicken Pad Kee Mao and it was very underwhelming. It lacked flavor in my opinion and he gave it a 3.5. I had the Red curry and it was excellent. Great melding of the coconut milk, spices and vegetables. Would get again. Overall I think I would return and try their specialty.

Yelp
Beautiful lunch at secret Thai kitchen. The food was great and staff amazing! We shared the king crab legs platter. It was outstanding!! At first the crab legs came out over cooked but they made them over no questions asked and they were great!
google avatar

Anne D.

Yelp
I ordered delivery here for the first time. My order was for pad Thai with tofu and spring rolls. I really like the pad Thai but the spring rolls were not the best I've had (not terrible though). It was delivered in a reasonable time. I will definitely order from here again.

Marco P.

Yelp
absolutely amazing. pad thai was great . amazing atmosphere. Service was great. Appetizers were great

Yelp
Food was good and came out quick Came in on a Friday night and it was quiet home style comfort

Yelp
New on the mile and it's a great addition. The food was so good and re prices are fair. Service was excellent and presentation was nice. We had a small situation and they quickly resolved. I highly recommend. We will def be back
google avatar

Cheryl M.

Yelp
I'm not a fan of Thai, my girlfriend recommended we try this place. We sat in the back outside near the parking lot, they added a shed in the back. I had Chicken Pad Thai which was good. My friend had crispy Duck, she said it was really good. The service wasn't bad but they need to understand English better. The shed was cheaply decorated. I would return to try other items on the menu, they also had a nice playlist.

Yelp
What a great new place on the Nautical Mile! Hubby and I shared two dishes, a Pad Thai with tofu and a Red Curry with vegetables and shrimp. The pineapple in the curry dish gave it the perfect amount of sweetness. Both portions were well-sized, albeit a bit on the pricey side for the protein add-ons. The service (attentive and prompt) and quality of the food (fresh and tasty) were excellent on this first visit. We will be back and also plan to order for takeout when nearby!
google avatar

Cristina J.

Yelp
Great food, Service was great, pricing was a little steep. Understandably this is a restaurant on the Nautical Mile so I understand it's expensive to upkeep. They kept a lot of decor from the old "crab shack" that was there previously. I will be back for sure as the owners were very try nice. Definitely try the peanut dumplings they are so good!

Dev B.

Yelp
Food is great i cant stop eating its amazing here Service on point Ambiance is a vibe

Yelp
Let me start by saying we've been to a BUNCH of Thai restaurants (sup, kin'd, BKNY) etc so I have a good basis for this review. The waiter and bartender are really friendly, and attentive. We came midday on a weekday so it wasn't busy. The food is great, the secret Thai wings seem double fried and their sauce is amazing. They had a very good deal on a lunch special as well and I got the pad see ew. It was also very good, she got the pineapple fried rice and loved it. Their Thai iced tea is also amazing. This is definitely my new favorite restaurant on the mile and we'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Rosa D.

Yelp
I had never had Thai food before and after eating at Secret Thai I am forever changed. The good is so yummy. Ad a person with food allergies I have to be careful of what I eat and where I eat. The first time I ate at Secret Thai I explained this to the waiter and he was more than accommodating. He personally spoke to chef and was able to make changes to the way the hood was prepared so I could enjoy my meal with my husband. Not many places would do that for you. The menu is the menu. Niko the chef makes it a point to learn your name and how you like your good prepared. This is what keeps us coming back. Secret Thai is the hidden jem of the Nautical Mile. Go see for yourself.

Brittney B.

Yelp
The baileys Thai green tea is out of this world I love this place!!! Perfect drink for comfort in the winter and perfect refresher for a hot summa day! Open year round, can I get a whoop whoop!
google avatar

Stephanie W.

Yelp
Was happy to find a new Thai place with great wings! They are my fav wings lately and the pad see ewe is pretty good. The pad Thai is lacking a bit which was a big bummer but I just believe it need more sauce. Their lychee drink is great and service was great as well. Will come back to try more. Decor is super cute
google avatar

Donna S.

Yelp
Every bite was delicious! The service was excellent and love the outdoor dining option!
google avatar

Yelp
As a fan favorite of Thai food, I was a bit skeptical to try this spot, especially since restaurants on the mile haven't been that great in my opinion; but Secret Thai was GREAT. We came for lunch on the Fourth of July and enjoyed their lunch special. I had a Chiangmai cocktail, spring rolls, pineapple chicken fried rice, and crispy wings. I had not a single complaint, the staff was extremely accommodating, the restaurant was clean and inviting, and the food was piping hot and extremely tasty. Will definitely be back often.
google avatar

Jared S.

Yelp
Love this place!! Stopped by the other day for take out for the first time and was immediately impressed by their friendliness and customer service. I kept it simple and healthy and ordered chicken and white rice. I love that it hit the spot but didn't make me feel overly full. The hot sauce they included was perfect, spicy but not painful. I can't wait to come by to eat inside. It seems they have a very generous check in offer of a free Thai ice tea!

Taina C.

Yelp
The best chicken wings on the south shore, crunchy with just the right amount of sauce. Also the restaurant is very cozy and cute
google avatar

Giggock Z.

Yelp
Thai food taste so good. Great Thai tradition food and service in town. A lot of parking spots must try.
google avatar

Lana E.

Yelp
Went here with family while in town. Overall I would give Secret Thai a 5 out of 10. Thai wings were not thoroughly cooked. Pad See mao was not spicy or flavorful. Service was cool but it's not someplace I would go back too.
google avatar

Charles G.

Yelp
Food was Delicious, fresh, highly recommend. Nice ambience. Parking on site is a big plus.
google avatar

Yelp
There are some great local spots on the Nautical Mile, and the Secret Thai Kitchen is an awesome addition to the businesses on the strip. Before they came, I would hear a lot of complaints that you have to drive into Astoria or Queens to get good Thai food. But, thank goodness, this restaurant relocated from Astoria and dropped right into Freeport. The food is awesome and the team running everything are very kind, humble, and so focused on serving Freeport the best food possible. We have gone a few times since they opened mid-March and continuously have an awesome experience each time. Can't wait for the warm weather to enjoy their back patio!
google avatar

Joseph Y.

Yelp
Great new comer to Freeport. A clean casual place on the Nautical Mile with great food. The Ultimate platter was impressive and the cocktails were fabulous! Very friendly and attentive staff.

Lois H.

Yelp
They are a new restaurant on the Nautical Mile with amazing food...everything and my new favorite drink..iced Thai tea!! The staff is wonderful , attentive and so sweet! It's in the space that was Crab Shack forever and they made into a calming relaxing interior. I love their fried tofu appetizer and every Pad Thai I have tried. My friends have tried many other plates and I have only heard raves about everything!!

Robert C.

Yelp
The Thai ice green tea and the Secret Chang mai is phenomenal, customer service was immaculate!

Karine J.

Yelp
Great service and tasty authentic food with a warm cozy feel. I will definitely visit again and again.

Shari K.

Yelp
Cute place. Food was tasty. Great lunch specials. Would definitely return to try more dishes

Stephen D.

Yelp
My wife and I have lived at the end of the mile for 25 years and have seen many establishments come and go. Secret Thai is hands down not only our favorite restaurant on the mile but just might be our favorite restaurant we have ever frequented. Since their soft opening we have eaten here at least once a week every week since early April. Every meal you can just taste the freshness of the ingredients and the spices and the flavors that can only come from generations of perfecting. My favorite is the Chicken Pad Thai medium heat with spring rolls but I will alternate each time so I can eventually try everything on the menu. I have not been disappointed once so far. Some other favorites "Secret Thai Wings", "Moo Ping" "Rock Shrimp", "Pad See or Pad Kee with Beef", Spicy Udon with Pork Belly", "Tom Yum Fried Rice with Duck" and this hasn't even touched on the Soups, Salads Entrees and specials that have all been splendid as well. In closing I would just like to whole heartedly thank Niko and her staff for a dining experience that I look forward to experiencing again once my last bite of leftovers is done each time. Not only is the service attentive and friendly and the portions (I always have leftovers that heat up great in an air fryer and microwave the next day for lunch) and pricing exceptional in these difficult economic times but the taste (Spicey, Sweet, Salty and Sour) is nothing I have ever really experienced. Bravo!!!! So so good....Yum!
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
My husband dined here last night and we will be coming back soon and recommending this restaurant to all of our friends! The food and service was outstanding. We ordered the secret thai dumplings (excellent) and I had the 1/2 duck with vegetables which was delicious, and my husband had the pad thai with chicken; he said this pad thai was the best that he's had. We've eaten at numerous Thai Restaurants in the area. This one is the best Thai restaurants around and worth a visit!!

Lawrence L.

Yelp
First off, let me just say this is hands down the best Thai food I ever had. Not only was the service fast, but also the presentation and quality was artistic. Everyone there (bartender, waitress, host, etc) were so welcoming and friendly. They really made you feel like family and at home -- which makes sense because it's a family owned restaurant. It's about time an authentic, affordable, and high quality Thai place opened up. Top 10 in Long Island. If there was an option for 6 stars, I would pick 7. Will definitely be going here all year round.
google avatar

Jane M.

Yelp
Most bland thai I have ever tasted in my life. They have an outside bar/seating area that people tend to gather in large groups blocking drivers and refusing to move so this makes the atmosphere unwelcoming from the start. Restaurant lies about offering contactless delivery: if you select this option when you arrive and call you will be told they dont do that so, if you are covid conscious bring a mask.

Denice R.

Yelp
After whale watching, we walked over to this restaurant. What a find! We had chive pancakes and chicken dumplings, a lunch special of fish and chips ( huge serving), pad thai, and a chicken and rice combo. Everything, every bite was delicious. The drinks were great too! I wish we lived closer, but I may have to get lost one day and end up back at Secret Thai Kitchen!
google avatar

Bryan B.

Yelp
I really love this place it's my to go place for takeout, dining in and having drinks. The service is over and beyond they make sure the food is done to perfection. Quality Thai food at its finest . When I walk in the place it's very clean and cozy. The staff are great any questions I have they have an answer. The owners to the staff and bartender they phenomenal.

Brandy J.

Yelp
Great food and nice atmosphere! Love the wings and the passionfruit mojito mocktail was delish! Will definitely return.

Vee M.

Yelp
Food was delish!!! Clean establishment. Fast service and good mixture of music. Will definitely return.

Ashley L.

Yelp
Amazing service! Welcoming and inviting. Nice affordable prices for food and drinks. Definitely a must visit on the mile!

Danielle C.

Yelp
Great service! Finally a Thai spot in Freeport !! Affordable prices and great ambiance.

Yelp

Jalurak W.

David N.

Yelp
I went with a couple of friends and I must say the food was out of this world. For appetizers, we ordered the Moo Ping and the Secret Thai Wings and they're a must. For dinner, I had Beef Pad Thai and it was absolutely delicious. The service was amazing and the drinks were delicious. I recommend the Thai Punch. Coming back.

Gavin J.

Yelp
It's on the mile in Freeport Came by boat tied up across the street stop by for lunch I was early but they served me a 2 Go box that was Very Good I will return for Dinner soon

Monica Y.

Yelp
If I can give more stars I would. It's great and different addition to the Nautical Mile restaurants. The food is delicious you can ask for extra spicy if that is what you fancy. The food tastes delicious and authentic to Thai flavors. The service is happy and inviting. I will absolutely come here often and invite anyone around to do the same!

Amanda V.

Yelp
Was happy to see a new Thai place on the Nautical mile. The food was overall good but maybe not our favorite locally. The Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles were nice sized portions. The Drunken noodles I ordered medium and didn't find it to be spicy at all and I just felt it was lacking some flavor overall and there didn't seem to be a lot of chicken for the price. Overall, the prices are a bit high but the portion sizes do reflect that at least for the items we ordered. The Zabb wings were definitely unique and flavorful. They had a thick and crunchy coating and the dry spicy lime seasoning was really good, definitely had a kick. However, the salt level was super intense and I love salty foods. Just a warning if you don't prefer or try to avoid a lot salt. I also tried the secret thai wing sauce (I requested a side of this) and that was unique and delicious. We had a young man as our server and he did a great job! He was friendly and took accurate orders on his electronic device. There was no problems with asking for slight modifications to a dish (either requesting the addition or omission of an ingredient.) I would like to try their dumplings but the chicken dumplings also have shrimp which I avoid. Overall, it was a good dining experience.

Asad Z.

Yelp
10:10, absolute best Thai food I've had on Long Island. The chicken wings were so yummy and crunchy and tender. The vibe of the restaurant was so nice and the staff were super friendly too. Would definitely come again!!

Aileen M.

Yelp
This food was amazing!! The service was very good as well. We did takeout but I'm looking forward to sitting down there for a meal and enjoying a nice cocktail.
