Jota, a Takeout Restaurant From José Andrés, Opens Four Locations | Eater NY

"A "zero-waste" grocery store named Seed + Soil is opening in Woodside, Queens on November 18 at 49-20 Skillman Avenue (near 50th Street); it sells non-perishable foods and household supplies in bulk with a no-packaging policy—customers bring reusable containers or can buy them there—and is owned by two couples, Roque and Sivan Rodriguez and Kana and Yuuki Hirano, who opened Suryaside Yoga in the area in 2020." - Luke Fortney

Love this store! Such a great place to have in the neighborhood. Once you get the hang of weighing and filling containers (friendly staff are happy to help), it’s a breeze to get a whole bunch of staple food items without all of the packaging. We bring empty mason jars and tend to get coffee, oatmeal, pasta, as well as snacks like dried fruits and nuts. The selection is surprisingly big. Prices are good and it’s satisfying to help reduce plastic packaging waste.

I love being able to get so many pantry and household staples from a pretty reasonably priced and sustainable store. I didn’t come with my own containers but there were free recycled containers I could use to pack up my dried goods and olive oil. The staff and owners were so helpful and friendly. This store offers so much to the current and future community.

Amazing zero-waste store! They just opened in November 2023. Obviously it’s a little pricy but that’s the tradeoff for being plastic-free. You can bring your own containers or buy theirs to get nuts, grains, legumes, flours, coffees, chocolates, pastas, spices, cleaning products and toiletries. They have have some natural kitchen accessories and a water machine for large jugs of filtered water. * It’s on Skillman even though it looks like it’s on 50th on the map.*

So much to love about this shop. The homey vibe, how they're always adding cool new products that you can't find anywhere else, how everything I've bought here is so deeeelicious, and the pride in supporting intelligent, sustainable, wholesome businesses.

The tea selection is wonderful and I love they take storage so seriously to ensure quality; the tomato sauces are great too! they feel homemade and have very decent sugar/salt levels

The main entrance is filthy, with disgusting water dripping from the AC. The guy inside was rude and didn’t even bother to put my purchase in a bag. Sadly, it’s just another place with unhappy people working only because they have to.

I’m thrilled to have a zero waste store in Sunnyside! They sell amazing and high quality spices, nuts (love the cashews!), dried fruit, gummy candies, crackers, coffee… I’ve been impressed with nearly every product I’ve purchased. I love their hand and body lotion, and I plan to give their shampoo and conditioner a try. My goal is to try every product in the store. I’m about 25% there!

Seed + Oil is a wonderful, much needed store from the beautiful people at Suryaside Yoga. The space is community focused, calm and peaceful. I love that I can get fresh, homemade miso paste, tamari, and rice locally. I don't always plan to be there so I don't carry my own dry containers for non-dry items. It is so helpful that they have jars that they weigh ahead of time to make shopping easy. bring then your recyclable glass jars and they'll wash and reuse them so someone else has a free jar to fill.

Yelp
Wonderful addition to the neighborhood. It's very well thought through and organized store. Service is on point owners go above and beyond to explain and help customers. Selection of nuts, oats, flour , spices and sweet treats are available you bring your own jars and fill them with goodies. If you don't have your own jar the store offers paper bags for $0.15 . I purchased macadamia nuts, Brazil nuts and Everything but the bagel cashews that I sampled at the opening. I'm looking forward to being my own bottle and try alkaline water . If you haven't stopped by Seed+ Oil you are missing out. Cheerio!

Yelp
I like the concept of the store where you can get seeds + oils and other items, put them in jars or containers. Very earth friendly and recyclable. The person who worked here at the cash register was very friendly and knowledgeable. He stated that the hours would be extended in January. It's about time that we get a store like this in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I have heard about theses types of stores for a while and have been to one in PA. It's actually really a fantastic concept. These types of stores try to eliminate waste. Its a package free store. You can buy almost anything from candy, nuts, flour, cooking oils, seasonings, pastas, plus a lot more. How it works is you can bring in your own bottles or containers or you can purchase containers from the store like a starter kit and you will be able to reuse the containers again for all future purchases. You select what you would like to buy they minus the weight of the container and they charge you for the food item that you would like to buy. When you run out of the items that you purchased just bring back the containers and just buy products again. The best part is you can buy the exact amount that you would need so there is zero waste. If this concept takes off in this neighborhood it will really change the way we shop.

Yelp
So excited to have this great addition in the neighborhood! The owners and staff are super kind and helpful. The quality of the inventory is top notch. (Best Tahini I've ever had!) AND I leave feeling good to have what I need without what I DON'T! More plastic!!! Thanks so much for all the effort that has gone into creating this special place and making this option available to us all!
