This little shop is packed to the brim with candies; Wall-to-wall delights everywhere you look.
See's Candy has a special place in my heart. My grandmother used to buy me See's Candy when I was a little girl. It's one of the relics of my childhood that still remains. Although See's kiosks can now be found in airports, as well as in stores, across the country, there's still nothing like getting it in California. It's made fresh here and the brick-and-mortar stores have certain treats that are not simply available at the smaller retail locations.
I came into this store after work, as wide-eyed and glee-filled as I'm sure I was over 25 years ago: holding grandma's hand and trying to make the impossible choice of which (one) sweet treat to get.
I will tell you that the decision gets no easier as an adult. These beautiful displays of perfectly polished candies are just as tantalizing now as they were back then, if not more so. The difference is that now I'm spending my own money, so I can get as many as I want.
I'm sure grandma is looking down from Heaven; smiling and shaking her head.
As soon as I hit the door, the gentleman behind the counter offered me a free sample. I gobbled up an Apricot Delight and immediately knew I was going to need at least one more of those.
In addition to the Apricot Delight, I decided on the the California Brittle and the limited edition Mint Scotchmallow, which I think is only released around St. Patrick's Day.
I can't pick a favorite, because that would be wrong, so I'll tell you about em all.
The Apricot Delight is a sunny, tart, and delicious shock to the senses. It looks nothing like what you imagine it will taste like. The coconut is simply a cover for the bright burst of apricot that you get once you begin to chew the candy. It's a unique confection that is executed beautifully.
The California Brittle is a square of buttery rich toffee enrobed in silky-smooth milk chocolate with a delightful crunch... it's one of my old favorites.
The Scotchmallow was the yummiest chocolate confection I've enjoyed in a long while; a green peppermint marshmallow, plopped atop a layer of rich chocolate butter caramel, then wrapped in delectable dark chocolate.
Forget the Shamrock shake... this is the new St. Patty's Day treat that I crave! I'll definitely be back for another.
