Pizzeria Melrose’s New Plateau Location Goes Hyper-Local with Ingredients | Eater Montreal

"I learned that Oliviera sources his produce from Segal’s grocery store during his daily market runs, and that Segal’s sits within a block of the new Pizzeria Melrose." - Audrey Carleton

Saw a cashier sneeze directly into her hands then continue touching people's vegetables. Last week I saw a different employee fingering all the grapes in a bag then chucking the bag back onto the shelf without sealing it. Saw another employee chucking apples into the apple container from like 2 metres away meaning they'll get bruised and mold quicker. It's been good Segal's but I'm out

Google
Really nice little super market, cheapest place to get some decent quality products. They have a nice little veggie/vegan option which is a big plus. It’s quite tiny, and usually packed, so hard to navigate and not have people yelling at you to move your cart etc.. I go there every 3-4 weeks to resupply some general essential items, but they don’t have Everything that you would need. The avocados are cheapest place to get them, and they are good size and tasty. I would recommend this little market any day !!!

Gil S.

Google
This store kind of hiding, as there are no big signs or colors. I just followed someone who walked in. I was impressed by the fresh fruits, and also by some frozen vegan food. Prices are reasonable. The checkout waiting time did not take too long.

Laura C.

Google
Very crowded on a Sat. afternoon, so I returned another day before noon. Found lots of fresh produce (some grab bags for just one dollar!) and many vegan products, including $4.99 frozen Gardein ‘meats’ (even the stuffed turk’y - a great price). Olive bar. Bulk bins of beans. Everything at very good prices. This would be a regular grocery source for me, if I lived a bit closer.

Google
Let's be real, this place ain't pretty, but it's a local gem. You better have your game face on when you go shopping here because it's kind of chaotic, but they have the best prices on the best selection of healthy foods. I come here every week like most locals in the Plateau.

Rus T.

Google
Incredibly affordable supermarket. It may be cramped and a little confusing to get around but it has a wide selection of options and truly has unbeatable prices. Meat selection is limited and pricy.

Natali M.

Google
It’s a Hidden gem. Excellent place I love it. Affordable prices, Kind staff, strategically located, wide variety of grains, pasta, fruits and vegetables. You can Bring your own bag or use their cardboard box

Google
Been there for ever it seems. Actually was closer to Marianne decades ago. Been a needed staples. Thanks Segals crew I appreciate y'all

Will T.

Yelp
Very odd ambience for a grocery store. All the shelves are packed with stuff but everything is clearly just thrown in there. There are random carts littered throughout with random items sold for shockingly low prices. As many other people have mentioned, there is a metric fuck ton of dried fish in the back. It doesn't smell as strongly as the rest of the comments say it does though haha The meat was pretty shit though and the avocados we bought sucked

Yelp
What can I say about Segal's Market? Once upon a time when I was a poor and starving student living in Montreal I shopped at Segal's every week. Yes, it's grungy in there, and smells weird, and is full of salty people, but I was able to get bags of groceries that fed me for an entire week for about $10. Admittedly that was a while ago, and I was a vegetarian back then, and I weighed less than 100 lbs, but hey I lived to tell this story. I was back at Segal's this past week, for a stroll down memory lane, and with the exception of some new security cameras and TV screens, it's exactly how I remembered it. It's still poorly lit. The refrigerated sections still have those yellowing plastic curtains. The floors are still dirty and it still smelled weird. Prices are a bit higher, but I would say keeping with inflation. They stock a few more organic items now. The bulk items used to just be in open tubs (like at Bulk Barn, minus the coverings), but are now in plastic garbage/recycling bins, with lids, lol. The "scoops" are plastic water jugs that are tied to the bins. Most are cracked or broken. I found this amusing. This place has apparently been around since 1927. Maybe it's just nostalgia speaking, but I have a soft spot in my heart for its "this is who I am, warts and all, take it or leave it" attitude.

Yelp
Funny that I am reading reviews about this place as weird and creepy. The store inside is not organized and it is not pleasant to the eyes. For the ones who value the external appearances, you wouldn't know it is a grocery store from the outside and it looks like something that comes from a third world country. To the good stuff inside: Lots of great products for a variety of budget needs. Tons of organic products both local and around the world. Due to the covid situation, you might get a lineup but they are usually not that long because they have four registers.
google avatar

Jean R.

Yelp
I have shopped here for many of years, best prices overall. took a while to find where items were on shelves, but the staff, although busy are courteous and helpful. so pleased when they began selling organic. so nice not to have food enclosed in plastic. I hope they never close while I can still walk up to buy my groceries every week

Yelp
I still don't like this place. I just find it so ... uncomfortable- between the metal baskets, the shopping carts, I'm too busy worrying about if my tetanus shots are up to date because of the likelihood of being scraped be some metal cart, basket or shelf. You can't just walk normally and feel at ease. You're constantly having to be aware of all the moving parts around you lest you get jabbed by something. Oh yeah, I'm not sure if he's a manager or something but there's a balding "bro" who hangs out by the cash and he's extremely rude and not helpful at all and just throws attitude at everyone around him. Between Marché P&A, Bulk Barn and Adonis, there are other places to get your goods on the cheap, which are cleaner and easier to deal with than this place.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
Is this the cleanest grocery store in the city? No. Is this the best smelling grocery store in the city? Hell no!!! But it sure is the cheapest and the weirdest.
google avatar

Lorena F.

Yelp
I just found out about this place. I called and this is how it went. Hello, do you deliver? Yes! Is there extra charge for delivery, how much? 4 dollars Okay! Can I place my order? No, you have to come here. So if I have to go there, there's no point of asking for delivery, right? I guess there is no point, bye! He hang up the phone! #crazyperson

Yelp
SEGAL'S IS WEIRD. It's poorly lit. It smells weird. It's badly organised. It'll take you a year to find the one thing you're looking for because it's hidden under a pile of lemons. There are salted fish in a pile at the back. The bulk items are stored in actual bins (clean ones, though). In short, it's like a serial killer designed a grocery store. And I love it. It's so cheap! Incredibly, incomprehensibly cheap. I got excited at Provigo because avocados were on sale for $1 each. Then I found out that Segal's sells them for 67c. EVERY. DAY. It's a beautiful mess here, and the staff always help you out. Yes, it smells weird. Yes, it's creepy inside. Yes, I'm never going to buy one of those salted fish and I've never seen anyone else buy them, either (why are they there?) but I love Segal's forever and always because it means I can buy all the vegetables and cheese I want without going bankrupt.

Yelp
One of the spots I miss the most about not being in MTL anymore. Imagine a small scale Costco but with tons of ethnic and organic products. That is where you want to go to shop. Seems like nothing from outside and when you firs t step in, but as you go through the alleys, you can not help but dance with your cart as you discover the amazing prices and the amount of quality shelf food (their fruits and veggies are not organic but very good prices). A spot to know!

Yelp
Cheap, BUT the large man who oversees the customer flow (apparently the "boss") at the front HAS NOT HAD A SHOWER IN LIKE A MONTH. Totally disgusting. You can smell him six feet away. I had to literally cover my face when he would walk by. His odour is pungent, overwhelming and unhygienic. I don't think I can go back, he was that stinky. If the head staff cannot have the basic decency to keep their bodies clean, lord knows how they treat the produce. I feel sorry for the four or five very nice cashiers who have to work in the presence of such a disgusting and preventable odour. For gods sake, dude, take a shower!!!! Update: I forgot about the smelly guy and went back there in April 2017. This means that his odour had an odour endurance rating of about 13-14 weeks. food was cheap and not smelly this time. Adding a star. Remember there are Plenty of Alternatives (PA for short) for great produce at cheap prices.

Yelp
Just great prices and so fun and quirky, random sales on cheese and other items mean reliable 1$ goodies

Lou T.

Yelp
If you are looking for a cheap place to buy your groceries you're at the perfect place. You'll find a nice variety of fruits and vegetables and all the basic stuff you eat for a cheap price. Run to this place, people are nice and well organized.

Yelp
Everyone in the neighborhood knows that this grocery store is a dump...but everything organic is amazingly cheaper than anywhere else, sometimes $3 to $4 cheaper. I usually get my cheeses, nut butter, soaps, protein fibre powder, ice cream, yogourt, etc...all organic and all $1 (and more) cheaper than any of the health food grocery stores around. The only draw backs are their terrible quality fruits and vegetables (often rotten), and the staff (some men are usually not very helpful, except the really "big" guy is an angel) and the poor cashiers are all adorable even though they must be frozen stiff at the front door. Very good selection of organic food. The positives almost outweighs the negatives. It's a bit like stepping into a timewarp into the mid seventies. And to boot it is right next door to the only remaining xxx rated Cinema L'Amour of North America! Time has stood still in this area!

Yelp
Why did I shop at Provigo all these years... Finally got introduced to Segals by my friend, and I was skeptical at first at how much could a few cents savings do for me, but when the total rang up it was ~1/3 cheaper than what I would have paid at regular chain supermarkets! Segals does have a bit of a sketchy, dingy vibe (partly due to the weird smell of dried fish in the back) but it is definitely worth it! They have the best deals for their veggies and eggs i found, just don't come here for meat since it is mostly limited to sausages. Also don't forget to bring a bag since they don't supply them (they have boxes)! You might come out smelling a bit funky but the prices here definitely are worth it :)

Andrea-montreal C.

Yelp
When i didn't live in the area, i used to take a half hour bus ride (or bike ride) just to get here. You get something of what we'd imagine fells like a 3rd world market experience coming to Segal's because the isles are cluttered with yet unsorted boxes, you fish your olives out of huge garbage like containers, and there is a pile of unprotected dried salted fish at the back. Yet Segal's remains my number one destination for food shopping because it is dirt cheap and i usually save between 20 an 40% of my normal grocery bill, and they have a large variety of organic and vegetarian products. if you can't find an item, just ask a clerk: they will move the three rows of boxes that are in front of your desired item or tell you they're out of "x" today. have fun shopping at Segal's!

Rc L.

Yelp
This is your hippie grocery store. If you're vegan, gluten free, fair trade, ingredient conscious, you will want to hit up Segal's. Honestly though, it's a tiny place so they don't have a huge selection but I appreciate this is one of the only places in Montreal where I can buy my hemp milk. And cute pastas for date nights. And $1 Belgian chocolate bars. And cheap nutritional yeast. And... well, just go check it out after you eat at Shwartz's next door. This is a great supplemental market for those occasional specialty items.

Yelp
Once you get over the smell of dried fish, the crazy disorganization of the store, the dirty floors, and the crowded isles, you'll enjoy shopping at this place because the prices are generally very low. That being said, I'm sure this place is in violation of some major health code violations and there are certain items that I categorically would not buy from here because I question how the food has been stored. Ex; you'll often see items like yogurt sitting in boxes in the middle of an aisle not inside an refrigerator. The first time I went in here it was a bit of a nightmare, and I remember seeing a toddler crawling around on the floor of the produce aisle in puddles of dirty water while produce literally rolled around on the floor with him. Between that and the smell of the dried fish that sits in the back of the store, I was ready to leave pretty much immediately. Other customer's are audibly and visibly exasperated by the state of chaos that the store is perpetually in. If you go on a busy evening when people are hitting the store on the way home from work, this place is likely to give even the most mellow person an anxiety attack. Again - how has this place not been cited for health code violations? Does Health Canada do its shopping here too and not want to shut it down so they can save some money?

Anne F.

Yelp
Its a lovely and cheap store but today the old store owner lady barked at a poor customer who just wanted her receipt . The lady yelled saying she was holding up the line
google avatar

Naomi D.

Yelp
In downtown Montreal, places like provigo are ridiculously overpriced. Segal's Market offered some AMAZING prices. Like seriously what a bargain. There's soooo many organic/vegan/healthy options too which is awesome. I would recommend this place cuz it's freaking dope. :)
google avatar

Jesse H.

Yelp
There are no other grocery stores that give me what I need for this level of price. Segals is crowed, has it's own aroma and gives off the impression of disorganization, however this is only skin deep. The staff can help you find what you need due to them a) having a lot of random sought after products and b) having a lot of staff. Their products are not only limited to run of the mill but also a good amount of organic products. Hummus, almond milk and dried fish, they have it all... ...except bags, bring your on bag (byob)
google avatar

Ben K.

Yelp
Best place for groceries and other sundries? Yes. Best place for fresh produce or bread or meats or cheeses? No. Thankfully it's located close to some amazing stores where you can find those other things, but for everything else it's impossible to beat. I refer to it as the Portuguese Wrestling Pit, which should give you an indication of its ambiance. I've been shopping here for 16 years and I wouldn't give it up for anything.
google avatar

Didier N.

Yelp
The grocery store that everyone refers as "4001" (its address) rather than its real name! We all agree that it is dirty and cheap. Yet it has been opened for a long time and everybody knows about this place, even my parents and in-laws that live in the West Island. The produce section is a hit or miss. However, 4001 is my go to place for organic items and good Portuguese products such as chorizos, sardines and olive oils.
google avatar

Simon B.

Yelp
It's busy has heck; trying to buy milk here on a Saturday while navigating the narrow aisles past shopping carts and baskets is like a game of stand-up Twister. Come at quieter times so you can soak in the organic hippie / poor portugese vibe and poke into all the corners to see what bizarre foods you might find. The prices are super cheap, but watch the expiry dates and age of the produce because you might not have long to eat it. Their stock rolls over fast and they're likely to be out of something you're looking for, so expect to make do. The asian market further up St Laurent is a good alternative if you don't feel like pushing your way through the crowds at Segal's.
google avatar

Sophia K.

Yelp
A great place to go if you have a limited budget - I routinely get groceries here for less than half the price than if I bought them at Provigo. A word of advice though and try to avoid peak times. The isles are very narrow and it's near impossible to move around with more than a dozen people in the store.
google avatar

Allen R.

Yelp
I read about this place as the best value supermarket in Montreal through someone's blog. I went out of my way to come here as a tourist. Although you may have trouble finding the entrance, it does not look like traditionally polished supermarket inside. Google maps kept telling me I arrived, but I had to ask locals where to find the entrance. I loved the place. It did not take me too long to figure out who the owner, head manager was. I think he thought I was trying to steal stuff as I was browsing, taking pictures, and reading ingredients for so long. He has a strong personality and dropped f-bombs in English at ease when I asked him when the turkish pizza would be restocked. I liked him instantly. I came here everyday for my five days visiting Montreal. I have difficult illness digesting certain things in foods so I have to eat from supermarkets where I can read the ingredients. In addition to the Turkish pizza (Nane pizza), I was most impressed by the tea, kombucha, and yogurt collection. Also, they have a sugar free 80% dark chocolate bar that I cannot find anywhere in the USA. Also, the cashiers are all lovely women. They all spoke English and I felt the well-known Canadian friendliness from all of them.
google avatar

Irwin K.

Yelp
Probably one of the last times I shop there...sad but true, moving on to Verdun the Plateau has changed way too much and even Segal's doesn't seem like they want to be there anymore..shades of the old Warshaw store..
google avatar

Anna K.

Yelp
Fantastic place for pantry staples. Bring cash and your own bag, or take one of their cardboard boxes. Avoid frustration by remembering each cash has its own line.
google avatar

Rosalinda L.

Yelp
I frequent this store twice a month at least. They have a variety of selection- affordable and reasonable. Even though it is out of my way, it is worth it to go. I find the employees helpful if you ask them. It is a small place but pack of good...ness. I have not encounter any rudeness but "normal" way of handling business, in my opinion.
google avatar

Ari T.

Yelp
This store is like a dream ! It is not good looking at all but sooooooo cheap! It is amazing for organic staples (but not nice for fresh fruits and veggies). You won't believe how cheap it is! It is absolutely worth going there! It is full of good looking people from the PLAteau too!
google avatar

Anne G.

Yelp
Some of the staff take pride in being rude & unreasonable. The store is dirty, the fresh produce is disgusting. Yes, they are cheap, but I would recommend Supermarché PA, marché frères Sakaris and Lobo market, three other cheap markets in the area. They are clean and friendly (especially the first 2). Life is too short for the chaos and rudeness of Segal's.
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
If you haven't heard about it here, it was probably through a friend of a freind of a friend... and now you're hooked! Hidden on St.Laurent right before Duluth and with no sign, Segal's is a great place for the budget shopper. I checked out this place once and is now my go-to place for affordable vegetarian and alternative products. Everything that will cost you a fortune in a supermarket, you can get here for a killer deal! Think tofu, tempeh, cereals and granola's, alternative milks, spices, spreads, organic breads...they have everything, including a selection of Portugese products loyal to the nature of the neighbourhood. Produce is so-so...gotta be there on the right day. Hidden find: they receive fresh vegan muffins and treats on tuesdays, and they only cost from 1-2$ Be sure not to piss off the big-guy...you know who I'm talking about! Put your carriage away!
google avatar

Offer R.

Yelp
Cheap with good selection of products. Not the place to get fresh meat, but definitely good for fruits and vegetables. It's got a bit of a third-world market feeling, but it's the cheapest place around. It is very disorganized, but once you know where to find stuff it's ok. I shop there weekly for a few months now. Can be really crowded on evenings and weekends, but relaxed otherwise. They always have nice specials that change weekly. They don't accept credit cards (debit and cash only). Bring your own bags. delivery possible for $4. I'm lucky to live a few minutes away!
google avatar

Elizabeth F.

Yelp
I always got fruits and vegetables, olive oil , milk and juice here. Very cheap price and fresh. Big line up after 5pm

Alex S.

Yelp
Some organic products at a good price. But the place is so small that making the groceries there is just not a good experience, at all. And more important, the big guy (from the staff) in the front can be really rude. No manners at all. A shame.

Nora K.

Yelp
Ty segal's is the BUEST grocery store for price wise yum yums in TOWN! I chatted with aisle clerk zak, mitch, and patrick for HOURS and had many lols. I feel bad for the people who work in the freezer, arent there human rights in place here in our great nation! WOuld eat here again.
google avatar

Ashley D.

Yelp
As hectic as it is, Segal's definitely has the best prices. I don't love the dried fish bin at the back of the shop, but generally they have everything I need!

Emma W.

Yelp
"Community" grocery store for no regard for the community. They knowingly let their delivery trucks block all of St-Dominique for over 15 mins at a time., disrupting traffic, causing people to have to reverse into oncoming traffic and potential accidents. They have no regard for anyone but themselves.

Sierra H.

Yelp
The people are not very friendly and their customer service is horrible. Make sure you check the expiration date because they do sell expired goods and will not give you your money back if you ask to return it even with a receipt. With that said however, I still shop there because of the low prices but if there was another market with the same prices, I would definitely shop there instead.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
I didn't expect much from this store judging its exterior (and even its interior) but was really surprised at the myriad of items they have for sale. They have organic items, cheap produce and many items from different countries. I will be back ALOT! But remember to take a bag, they don't have any, not even for sale (except fabric ones).

Velma D.

Yelp
This market was a great find for us, as we transition to living in the lower plateau! its a relief to find a well-stocked market with basics + an eclectic range of organic and healthy grocery options, in walking distance. Big, big step up from the depanneurs; cheaper and more convenient than the big chain supermarkets. As others have noted, segals carries lots of vegetables and prices are pretty good. The quality of the vegetables can be variable - you have to go in with an eye to what looks good, rather than counting on something you saw last time, being in stock and fresh-looking.

Hao Y.

Yelp
The fruits and veggies aren't the freshest, and you don't have a huge selection of meats to choose from ... but aside from that, this place is the cheapest place for groceries - organic, local stuff at "no-name" prices. It's incredible. I miss this joint so much.

Jan A.

Yelp
Folks, may be it`s time to protest Segal. I`m really fed up with staff attitude. This is what happened yesterday; I lined up and one of the employees came to talk to the lady in front of me. Fine, it`s good to be friendly and cozy with clients. I did not hear what they were talking but all of a sudden the staff raised voice and said `You fu...ng bitch.` The 40 something year old well dressed client was shocked and her face went red. When the guy stepped out I told her that it was really inappropriate to be called like that in public. She couldn`t say a word. By the way I`m a man. This is part one. Next; it was my turn and cashier (she is new and blonde) was asking question to long black hair supervisor about pricing. a bossy and condescending supervisor was very impolite with the staff. She too raised her voice and told cashier to use common sense and said `Ohh I see why you are blonde` The cashier was red too. All she could say `I don`t understand what do you mean` While leaving I said to cashier `Good luck` In 3 minutes two incidents. It`s too much. I decided not to go to Segal anymore. I strongly recommend the regular clients to do the same. Especially girls and women (if you don`t want to be treated as a bitch. I will copy and paste my comments in every review sites. Segal should change their attitude. Their are rude, impolite and they cross the red line. They take clients and temporary staff as granted.

Philippe L.

Yelp
Best grocery deal in Montreal. Lots of health foods and organic products. Save about 1/3 on any other place in the city and about 50% off places like metro.

Jessica B.

Yelp
A great place for dips, bread, cheeses, organic dried goods and a big selection of fruits and veggies! I love going here. I buy everything I need- and more, and am always shocked at the low price when I get to the cash register. A Montreal landmark as far as grocery stores go!

Markus S.

Yelp
I wouldn't buy my produce here but easily the best place to stock up on dried goods. Great organic section too...

Grace B.

Yelp
not the most organized or shiny grocery store in the world, but it's way cheaper than the competition and has a ton of variety.
