17 Best Wineries for Picnics in Napa and Sonoma - Eater SF

"Established by Italian immigrants in 1895, Seghesio Family Vineyards produces fine, structured wines that honor the history of both the region and the family. With fruit sourced from over 300 acres throughout the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys, the winery offers a remarkable collection of zinfandels and Italian varietals. Located in the heart of Healdsburg overlooking the cellar of California’s 56th Bonded Winery, the tasting room pours samples of choice varietals, which guests can enjoy among the picnic grove or while playing a game of bocce in the shade of trees. Pack your own picnic to enjoy before, after, or alongside a tasting. Midday munchies can also be satisfied with an antipasto platter ($20) that features house-cured salumi, local artisanal cheese, olives, tapenade, and crostini. Available Thursday–Sunday or with a pre-order request for Monday-Wednesday." - Jess Lander, A. K. Carroll

Very nice winery/tasting room just jorth and west of downtown Healdsburg. Mainly focused on Zins, though they do have other varietals. Excellent outdoor areas. Highly recommended.

We especially like the Vermentino, Rosato, and Chardonnay from Seghesio - delightful for the summer months. We really liked the bottle of Zin, so the promo for a case was quite appealing. We purchased 3 each of the Zin, Cortina Zin (even better), Rosato (summer time delight), and Barbera (outstanding). We like to support vineyards and wineries like Seghesio Family Vineyards that are committed to sustainable practices. The Zinfandel was rated highly in a recent issue of Wine Spectator, and we were fortunate to find a bottle at our local Total Wine store at a great price. This is a very good Zinfandel that is fruity, gentle, and smooth. Highly recommended!

Google
What an outstanding experience! Our host, Tony, was delightful and well-informed. The wine was great, and the setting was exquisite. It was so relaxing and all you would hope for in such an experience! We readily joined the club and are looking forward to our first shipment. This should be high on your list of winery to visit while in Sonoma!

Nice location, pleasant surroundings with nice outdoor area. One of the oldest wineries with strong focus In Zinfandel. All the staff are very friendly, our host Kathleen was very knowledgeable about the winery and the wines. We tried the classic tasting, will definitely the Italian tasting next time we visit. Joined as a member and you get to visit all their other affiliated wineries in Paso Robles, Napa, Oregon and Washington!

I love Seghesio! My husband and I have been members for a few years and everything about Seghesio is wonderful. The property is beautiful, inside and out. They’re (good) dog friendly, and family friendly. Everyone who works there is friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. And the wines are fantastic. While I enjoy all their Zins, I’m a big fan of their Barbera and Vermentino. I highly recommend Seghesio as destination spot. And as a member I can drop in and just have a glass of wine. Shout out to Jenna who recently took great care of my dog and me.

I had the pleasure of Jacob assisting with my tasting. He’s incredibly well versed in the history of the vineyard, and was very knowledgeable and able to answer all our questions. Very friendly, easy to talk to. What an incredible experience. The wine was exceptional. Hadn’t planned on joining the club because this is my first vineyard to visit this trip, but the wine was that good I couldn’t resist. Would definitely return here. Thank you for a wonderful experience, Jacob!

Google
Beautiful setting. Fantastic wines. Tasting was $30 per person and for an extra $5 you could add a library wine to raster against its current version. We spent 90 minutes and enjoyed every second of it. I shall return. Highly reccomended..

Google
Amazing experience at the chefs table! A 4-course meal with wine, plus extra wine and surprises. A great start to a Healdsburg weekend! Big bonus that the vineyard is walking distance (easy) from the Healdsburg square. Go here! If it’s sunny, the outdoor space is beautiful too. Even having a quick tasting and a saffron arancini by the bar would probably be amazing too, but if you have time for the food and wine pairing do that. If not, stop by and taste great wines, enjoy friendly service and sample something small from the incredible chefs menu.

Yelp
We had a terrific time - excellent wines & service - love their Zins!! I'll definitely be back with more friends

Yelp
My review is for a wine purchase / pickup: I drive my Seghesio often before they open. I was delighted to be on that side of town (as if Healdsburg is so big!) recently when they were open. I love their light, refreshing, and easy-to-drink Vermentino, especially for summer, and wanted to stock up. There were a few customers in the cool and comfortable tasting room on this particularly HOT day. Staff were quick to assist and poured me a sample to confirm I was buying what I wanted. Their computer system was down but they took my CC info and charged me later that day when it was back up and running. Easy peasy. I poured some Vermentino at a pizza night and everyone agreed that it's a lovely summer sipper. Highly recommend, and it's super reasonably priced. I'm almost through my 6 bottles, so look forward to returning soon for more. Hope to visit on a day when I have time (and the temperature cooperates), so I can sit outside on their beautiful front lawn for a full wine tasting and game of bocce! I also love their Zinfandels!

Paula L.

Yelp
Best overall tastings of any winery to date! We are big red drinkers and enjoyed the entire Classico (Zinfandels) flight, the only question is which do we love the most! Rockpile, of course! Great choice by hubby. Our host, Melissa, was so perfect -- a wealth of knowledge for the wines and nuances as well as the food pairings! She was also a great conversationalist and so welcoming. We were SO IMPRESSED, we joined Seghesio's Wine Club and left with our first delivery where we selected a vertical selection of Rockpile, plus an additional bottle of Old Vine. Great charcuterie plate, great wines, great company, great experience!

Yelp
Nestled just blocks from downtown Healdsburg is Seghesio. For over 100 years they've been producing amazing reds, mainly known for their Zins. They also make one of my favorite local white wines, Vermentino. The tasting room staff are super friendly and have always been happy to answer my questions or help arrange any of my requests. The indoor tasting room has big windows where you can peek into the cellar. The outdoor seating area is spacious and you can find a secluded area for privacy. The winery also has two bocce ball courts which can be reserved. I've visited the winery a handful of times and finally decided to join. Members get a handful of benefits including a discount.

Yelp
Jenna was an awesome employee that invited us to show up at the last minute and squeezed us in! Steffan was our host and they both did a fantastic job! Do not miss the winery!

Yelp
Very cute tasting room located just 5min drive from the downtown square. They have wonderful staff, extremely kind. Known for their Zinfandel but have a number of wonderful selections. Definitely heavy on the reds.

Jane S.

Yelp
Good wine. Poor service and information. We were the only ones in the tasting room and felt like we were disturbing them.

Yelp
Super cute outdoor area and really nice people working at this family winery in Healdsburg. It was very close to my hotel so decided to eat a delicious sandwich from Big John's Market in their patio before checkin. I bought a bottle of Chardonnay (though they are known for Zins) which was smooth and not too oaky, and only $24. Family and dog friendly. The sun was shining in mid-February and they had a lovely tall oak tree with other shaded areas nearly. Lots of rocking chairs and other comfortable seating. Will be back!!
google avatar

Michele S.

Yelp
Excellent service! Stellar outdoor ambiance with an awesome chill and relax vibe. No food but you can do a tasting board which would pair well with all the wines. Local products and producers. Seghesio is a very special place!

Yelp
Five stars for Natalie alone. Great presentation of the wines sampled. Beautiful setting inside.

Yelp
Fantastic wine. Fantastic space and outdoor patio for a warm summer or fall day. Fantastic staff who is incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating. Check out their underground wine cellar if you visit! They have a glass window from the inside tasting room where you can peak in and see a bit of the magic that happens there. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
David was the best wine server ever , loved our tasting with him ! Definitely will be coming back again thank you so much !!! All my friends enjoyed his service as well !

Yelp
We came as a late birthday celebration for my dad and our tasting was amazing. Our host Natalie was incredible. Informative, fun, relatable and full of energy. She truly made our tasting memorable. Wines were phenomenal and would highly recommend.

Yelp
Two of us stopped by Seghesio Winery on Tuesday, June 18th. We opted for two $30.00 flights while we enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. The wines were good enough that I bought a mixed half case. The cost was about $350.00. Did they waive the tasting fee? Nope! Let's see...we consumed about $4.00 worth of wine in both flights & then I spent about $350.00. on wine. Followed by an additional $60.00 tasting fee. Really? Not waiving the tasting fee?...Nice way to gouge people for a few more bucks. For those of you who scroll through Yelp comments prior to patronizing a business, know beforehand, Seghesio will not waive your tasting fee(s)....They don't advertise the fact that they won't waive the tasting fee.

Yelp
This winery is known for its Zinfandel. We have often had their wines back on the East Coast, but never actually stopped at the winery. We were in kind of a weird situation where we had some extra time early on a Friday and decided to swing by in the hopes that we could at least pick up some bottles. Upon arriving, we told the hostess our situation, and she could not have been more accommodating. Even though we had no reservations, she said "I'll get a splash for you ." Our friends ended up joining the wine club so we were able to get a discount. We bought a bottle and went on our way.

Yelp
I had no complaints about this place but honestly I had to go back to their website to find out how a couple of bottles made it in our case of wines back home. This place is always mentioned as a stop in Healdsburg with guests who stay in our home. I have heard it mentioned so much, it's been on my radar for a long time. You'll be surprised of where it's located, tucked away in a Healdsburg neighborhood just outside the plaza. When we arrived, it's always a nice touch to find your name printed on the menu but their wines compliment the expectation of this classic hospitality touch. They specialize in zinfandels and their wines come in collections. These wines have been made for over 125 years so the star of the winery is their wines. You come here to experience just a few of their highlighted wines but all their wines are offered in some sort of collection. They have a classic Zinfandel collection from a vintage vineyard in the Dry Creek, (an AVA known for their exceptional Zinfandels), their signature collection of zinfandels, and their Italian wine collection that includes a wine like the Barbera. We had a very nice afternoon talking and goofing around but honestly, their wines were so lovely that I remember enjoying all of them. I bought a t-shirt because I was so impressed with their classic wines with a pure terroir style and smooth taste that I feel represents this area. It's a winery for wine drinkers who like to compare this region with others for their style and process of wine making. For a classic wine tasting with Italian roots in Sonoma County, this is a nice find if you're into discovering new wines.

Yelp
What can I say about this winery? We didn't get to do wine tasting, but we bought a bottle of the Sonoma Zinfandel which was really good and great for the price as well. We also received our complimentary water bottle which was definitely needed after drinking. This place was recommended Yby my friend and I have thanked her for it. It's kid and pet friendly, so we were able to bring them. Wine Garden is a must if you just want to enjoy a bottle of wine and it's first come first serve basis. We visited on weekday, so it was not busy at all. Reservation is needed if you want to enjoy the wine tasting so highly recommend to do 24 hours prior to visiting.

Laura M.

Yelp
very disappointing experience. we have been coming to wine country for 12 years and between the four of us we are members of 14 different clubs. This week alone we have shipped back seven cases of wine already. this was the first winery that would not waive the tasting fee with purchases of wine. The reason we were given is because they were losing money. So how do you figure that when a tasting fee is $30 but the bottle of wine might be 60 bucks. So if we buy three bottles of wine, you're gonna make a whole lot more than just charging me the $30 tasting fee. so because of this, we decided not to purchase any wine here. So basically they're losing money by not waving the tasting fee. Terrible experience. Would not come back here and certainly would not recommend this winery to anyone.

Yelp
Finally made time to go to Seghesio. Our table was ready for us when we arrived. They also gave cans of cold water.. loved it. We enjoyed our tasting so much that we became members. We had been looking for a place and wanted a winery that does events and it seems like Seghesio will be the spot once everyone gets back into our pre covid routine. We're not much into white wines but we did cone home with some Chardonnay. And of course our favorite reds . We live close by so we will be going often for our free tastings and just enjoy setting under the big oak tree.
google avatar

Shellie W.

Yelp
The wines here are very good. We were members for years but they started releasing earlier than we used to so ended our membership, now they expect a huge Tip if you wine taste as a club member. There are too many other good wineries that don't expect a $50-$70 just to taste the shipment wines to see if you want additional bottles. Quite the shame really because we were members for a couple of decades.

Yelp
We visited Seghesio at the recommendation of friends and had a good experience. We had booked a reservation ahead of time and upon arrival were greeted by name and saw that we had a table already prepared for us with our name on a table card. We never went inside but the front outdoor space while right on the road felt tucked away. There was plenty of space and many tables but it wasn't too crowded. Our wine host was great and personable and walked through each wine in our tasting and we never felt rushed. We enjoyed the wines overall but nothing jumped out at us to purchase and bring back east. It was a laid back atmosphere and I'd return for another visit if I was in the area again.

Yelp
Beautiful winery! Our host was fantastic and we enjoyed ending the day here since the grounds are so relaxing. They even have a bocche ball court! We appreciate the small detail that each table (including ours) had the party name on them.

Amber D.

Yelp
We had an amazing experience at Seghesio. The wine was delicious, which it always is, but what really made our experience was Natalie C. She was extremely knowledgeable and very personable. Would love to have Natalie host us again!

Yelp
This winery is a beautiful hidden gem right in the heart of Healdsburg on Grove Street. There was ample parking and the grounds were lovely with plenty of patio couches and picnic tables. It was quiet & peaceful with different trees, so nice to have shade. Also great for a large group outdoor party. We brought our picnic lunch from Big John's & they were happy to accommodate - bringing out the chilled bottle of delicious Vermentino we ordered along with complimentary bottled water. Excellent, friendly service from the ladies who greeted me and my partner & dog warmly when we arrived. The wine was refreshing, nice blends & well priced. A great value with their Summer Sale. I highly recommend visiting Seghesio Winery as part of your Sonoma County wine tour! A++ experience!!
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
We enjoyed our wine tasting in the most lovely wine garden area! Seghesio's tasting room isn't located on their vineyards but they've made up for it by creating a really beautiful space. Like I'd want to host my next event here type of beautiful space. We were greeted by Kathleen as we walked up to the bar. She poured us our welcome drink of their signature zinfandel and gave us warm smiles and good info about the wine. Then she led us to our table. Kathleen was knowledgeable and friendly and made us feel so welcome. The wine was wonderful and the setting and service took this place to the next level. We really enjoyed our time here and would recommend this place to everyone!

Dana A.

Yelp
I love their wine I'm really hoping that I will get the elite invite to the Yelp event! I've never done a tasting at the Vineyard and wow what a cool experience this would be.

Yelp
Not even worth 1 star. Very bad experience. Wines were strictly okay. We will not come back. They were not flexible
google avatar

Yelp
Ahhh! I came here on a weekday in early November, it was perfect weather outside, but not busy. They allow outside food so we had brought our own charcuterie fixings. We spent a couple of hours here without even realizing. They have comfy outdoor seating that can accommodate larger groups and large tables so you can actually enjoy the food you brought! They also have corn hole and two bocce lanes? courts? That's how we ended up closing them down on a weekday. I can imagine during the spring and summer when wine tasting is in full swing, that it's not as much fun since you'll have to actually stop playing corn hole so someone else can play, but this was a great first experience here! It's in such a quiet little neighborhood you'd really never know it was here! Will definitely be recommending them to friends visiting Healdsburg!
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great experience here! We liked ALL the wines we tried and had a fantastic host name Kathleen! She made our experience so much fun! Will definitely come back!

Yelp
If you really want a special treat (or want to impress a spouse or some out-of-towners). Sign up for a weekend Chef's special lunch here (with wine pairing). The lunch is limited to 10 people, costs $75 - includes 4 courses (2 course served together for 2 plates of food) WITH wine parings. (no tip required- so $75 all in). you will not leave stuffed, so make sure to have some breakfast. You get a lovely tour - a lot of history about the winery and the family that owns it (we have Tony as a guide he was great). Our meal was: 1st two courses: gnocchi in a cream sauce with house made sausage & a hunter's braised chicken in a smoked paprika sauce (these were both everyone's favorite) 2nd two courses: a steak with pepper sauce on polenta and rib lamb chop on top of cous cous. (I have attached a photo of the menu for a more frilly explanation) The room and table are beautifully set. The grounds are lovely as well - when you are waiting for the lunch to happen, lots of cushioned furniture and shady trees.

Yelp
I became part of the Seghesio wine club based on recommendations that I saw on Instagram by the redwineguys. I loved the first shipment that I got a few months ago, so I was excited to visit their vineyard during my trip to Healdsburg. Our wine ambassador was fantastic, we just had the best time. He convinced me to upgrade my wine club membership and also offered us tasting of several premium wines that cost a pretty $. Highly recommend them specially for those who enjoy Zinfandel, I'm excited for my next shipment.

Yelp
We had the opportunity to have lunch and wine tasting here with family. The staff and service were friendly and excellent from the moment we walked in. It was our first time doing the lunch. It felt like we were in the show chopped. The chef would come in the room to describe the food being served. I wasn't sure what we were being served but it was all good. Specially the Bistro Steak and fries. It was cooked perfectly. Thank you for the excellent experience

George N.

Yelp
Turned away. I was a fan of Seghesio and happened to be in Healdsburg. Stopped by the tasting room about 3:20 on a Saturday. The parking lot was about 25% full. Saw about 3 groups sitting outside and maybe about 2 couples sitting inside. When I asked to do a tasting they said they were all booked and couldn't accommodate more. This is the first time I have ever (in 35 years), been turned away at a tasting room. I was a big fan of Seghesio before but I'll never buy another bottle of their wine, There are plenty of other high quality, lesser known, choices in the Healdsburg/ Dry Creek Valley area and I would encourage you to try some of them.
google avatar

Eydie R.

Yelp
Extremely knowledgeable and friendly Sommelier!! Excellent customer service!! The grounds are lovely and a picnic would be very nice here. Loved all the wines! This would be my very 1st stop if time allowed me to go back on another trip!! Amazing!!
google avatar

Amish K.

Yelp
The wines were great and the service was good but the host/manager was extremely rude and inflexible. They weren't ready to cater to big groups.
google avatar

K V.

Yelp
Great set up for tasting, although I wasn't crazy about all of the wine already being poured for our tasting when we arrived (see photo). I prefer the pour and discussion method - seems more personal. They are all about Zins so that was cool to experience the depth for each pour vs multiple different types of wine. This wine is available in retail stores around the country so you can always grab some bottles in your hood and replenish. The Old Vine stuff is primarily distributed through here so grab a couple of bottles for your stash. It's definitely the best of the batch in my opinion.
google avatar

Alicia H.

Yelp
Lovely grounds, great wine, great service! We did a bocce and bottle's reservation for my husband's 40th birthday and it was a great experience.

Phil H.

Yelp
I visited the beautiful tasting room and winery several weeks ago and was hosted by a lovely young lady named Natalie. She was new to the company but full of passion and knowledge about the wines. She had even done a little formal research before my visit and had a little brochure prepared for me. I asked for a tour of the winery and she kindly obliged and even knew quite a lot about the production equipment. After that, she walked me through each of the wines, starting with the whites and moving to the reserve reds. She explained that the winemaker's new style was a little more austere and not quite as extracted as in the past. While I do prefer darker, richer wines I found their wines to be very good. I noticed that a couple of my old favorites weren't on her list to taste but when I mentioned this she opened them on the spot. I bought a full case of wine and joined the wine club which I highly recommend that you do. Ask for Natalie when making your appointment and you won't be disappointed. Cheers!

Yelp
This winery was on my must-try list thanks to recommendations of friends that frequent this area. As I checked the reviews and saw that Kevin N, our former Austin Community Manager, had given it five stars, I was convinced to go. Their tasting room is practically in downtown Healdsburg but still manages to retain an atmosphere of casual beauty. The room itself is interesting in that there's a window behind the bar looking into the barrel room. Our servers were very informative and friendly. We went through several very good tastings until we got to the Omaggio. It's a 60-40 blend of Cabernet and Sangiovese. In other words, sex in a bottle, as it made me moan with pleasure. Our first server poured us our sampling and then wandered off. About 10 moaning minutes later, a new server arrived and asked us where we were in the tasting. I promptly replied, "The Omaggio is next!" Which elicited laughter from the patrons around us as they knew we'd just sampled that and I just wanted more. Omaggio means "Homage" in Latin (a tribute to Edoardo and Angela Seghesio who planted the family's first vineyard in America in 1895), altho I could think of another "O" word it should stand for. Some puppy dog eyes later and hubby bought me a bottle. At $60, it's definitely a special occasion wine, which means we'll probably never drink it :). As another winery pourer said, "Any time you open these wines, it's a special occasion!" Yeah, maybe we'll drink it on a Tuesday.
google avatar

Kali L.

Yelp
Gary made our visit phenomenal. He made us feel incredibly special on our anniversary and was so impressively knowledgeable about all the nuances of each wine, including the geography of each hill the various vineyards reside on! We will definitely be recommending Seghesio in the future!
google avatar

Jim R.

Yelp
We've been visiting this winery for more than 10 years and always enjoy their broad range of Italian varietals. The folks in the tasting room are friendly and knowledgeable and you always feel welcome here. A few years ago the family sold our to a larger group and slowly some of the little unique features are vanishing like their high end blend Omaggio. Still a great winery and worth a visit. They've also got some great food/wine tasting experiences that we've enjoyed in the past that I would highly recommend but you must book that ahead.

Rahul S.

Yelp
Worst experience ruining our long weekend. We called Seghasio for reservations and they said their policy was first come first serve. We reached early got a spot and ordered wine. In 90 mins we were asked to leave as the server mentioned another party was going to take our tables. They did not mention this when we checked in. As we ordered a few wine bottles not knowing the time limit they said you need to take these bottles with you. STAY AWAY from this place.

Yelp
Thank you Graham our gracious host for making our recent engagement so special. We loved the wine and our tasting experience! Can't wait to return.
google avatar

Genie L.

Yelp
Nice tasting room with the cutest hostess, Joyce. She's too cute! And extremely knowledgeable. We left with 4 bottles of Zinfandels, which is what they're known for producing. Very deep, flavorful zins that pair nicely with the salamis made there, as well! The salumi and cheese plate was perfect with our tasting. We ended up bringing the Family Salumi home with the zins. There's plenty of picnic benches in front to sit, drink, eat, enjoy.

Yelp
if you love red wines Seghesio is a must visit winery!!! superb wines!! and graham is the best! he is attentive, knowledgeable, fun, friendly, charming accent. we had such a fantastic time that we joined the club. can't wait to visit again.

So much fun celebrating a girlfriend's birthday with party of six inside by the fire as cold and wet outside! Love y to be picnic area when weather agrees! Awesome service and wine tasting! And everyone so friendly and wine is awesome! I highly recommend celebrating here!!!

Yelp
The family table with food and wine pairings is a MUST DO!! I'm a foodie and this was just done so well. Bo was our guide and he really did a great job. Highly recommend
