10 Real-Deal Bagel Shops in Portland | Eater Portland

"Henry Higgins and Puddletown may be carving up Portland, but Vancouver is strictly Seize the Bagel territory with its four popular locations, from Mill Pain and the Heights down south to Hazel Dell and the Orchards up north. Twenty bagel varieties on hand include irreverent flavors like chocolate chip and snickerdoodle — along with plenty of classics — and sandwiches range from a basic egg-and-cheddar to a bagel beef dip (yes, with au jus). Unlike many Portland spots on this list, each Seize the Bagel location has ample on-site seating." - Daniel Barnett

Hi there. First-time buyer here. And newly converted to lifetime consumer. 😎 I'm from out of state and decided to try a local shop. I got my cold brew and a breakfast bagel. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. I definitely recommend this place. *chef's kiss 🤌

Google
It is completely UNACCEPTABLE for my sandwich, that I did not order avocado on, to have avocado on it. Plus all over the wrapper. This is the second time I’ve had this happen at this specific location and it’s absolutely ridiculous. They should be using clean knives OR AT THE VERY LEAST A DIFFERENT ONE!!! I love Seize the Bagel. But this location needs to understand how bad it could be if someone were severely allergic.

Britt Ching-Melendez

Google
One word: monstrosity. I asked for the BYO vegan ham, egg and cheese toasted, and this is what I got. It wasn't even toasted, just cold. The customer service seemed cold, like I was a bother? It was off putting. I'm sad as I've been coming here and on off for 5 years and this? No thanks. I didn't even eat it, threw it away, and left.

Google
Crisp exterior, dense yet tender crumb, rich malty flavor—these bagels are exactly what bagels are supposed to be. Every bite has the right balance of chew and softness, with a fresh-baked aroma that actually makes you slow down to appreciate it. The spreads taste made in-house, with cream cheese that’s luxuriously smooth and generously applied, not a token smear. Service is quick without feeling rushed, and the staff actually remembers regulars and their orders. The shop is clean, well-kept, and smells like a working bakery, not a chain café. Prices are fair for the quality, and the consistency from visit to visit is remarkable. This isn’t “good for the area”—this is the benchmark for how a bagel should be anywhere.

Ariadne Cassity-Cole

Google
This is probably the worst coffee/breakfast sandwich combo I’ve had in Vancouver. The bagel was soggy, the pumpkin butter (or whatever it was) was absolutely globbed on, and the sandwich itself was cold. Not lukewarm, cold. Like it hadn’t been sitting on the counter for an hour before it was wrapped up. The coffee is fine but it is cloyingly sweet. I’m willing to try this place again and update my review if it’s better but this was really, really bad in every possible way.

Google
I've been going to Sieze the bagel for over 15 years now, and I still love it. Ive pretty much been ordering the same thing, and will never tire of it. Theres always plenty of seating, and the food usually only takes a few minutes. I'm loving the variety of treats and desserts they've had lately too

Google
So seen on indeed seize the bagel was hiring called the exact store got attitude from manager, so called a different store got told from hiring manager never ever call between 1030am-1230pm. She said usually if a customer calls before 1230 asking about a job she won't call back because in her words "customers should know the food industry" Have called hundreds of other restaurants and fast food joints have never been told that what so ever so seize the bagel has just lost mine and my family's business been going since they opened their first restaurant told family about this and they agreed completely BS for a manager to say not to call during lunch or you don't have a shot at employment

Google
Busy morning, help was fast and courteous as it was my son and myself first time trying. Good recommendations and Elizabeth at the counter was extremely kind and helpful to us and everyone in line even being very busy. Will definitely be making it a pre golf stop.

Yelp
Previously had only thought of this as a breakfast option (and our go-to for early morning tournaments), but discovered their great lunch options too! Been there about twice a week for a little over a month now and have even gotten the office hooked. Highly recommend the avocado toast and Cubano. They make the BEST iced chai teas I have ever had. Cost is a little high for some items, and a few drink orders have been missing a few items (ie cold foam), but overall customer service, especially their younger staff, has been great. Even met an older couple today who said they go there daily and have been impressed with the newer staff hires.

Yelp
If I could only leave a tip based on my experience, rather than upfront, before I even see/ experience the service/food. We came in to order six bagels to go, four sandwiches and two just bagels. Things were going fine with my daughter helping me to remember them all. When we got home we were missing the two plain bagels, my daughter phone to see what happened to them, it turns out someone just forgot to bag them. When I unwrapped my bagel a veggie sandwich with a vegan sausage patty. I found a sandwich with egg and a sausage patty and cheese. First off I'm allergic to eggs, I'm a vegetarian, and vegan. I'm done, I didn't need to be eating that late anyway. At least the wife was happy with hers.

Yelp
Walking in and waiting for someone to come help I heard employees talking shit about another employee . Which was super inappropriate for all of us out there to hear . Really mean and rude . Bagel was a waste of money tasted like shit should've went to Einstein bagels

Yelp
The food was delicious I got a vegetarian bagel with omelette, vegetarian sausage patty and avocado. It was delicious and very filling, I had the second half later in the day when i got hungry again so it accounted for two meals! That always makes me happy. The service was pretty good but the bag for my order was left to sit for a pretty long time, eventually I was able to get it from them. The inside is super clean and spacious, this is also a great place to sit and do work.

Yelp
Excellent service and taste! Out of state family came and they love bagels. Especially sesame. I purchased several yummy and different kinds! They loved the flavor and ate them all up!! as an aside I didn't know it was so close to my home. The shop sees the bagels and I was thrilled now I'll go back many times myself.

Kevin R.

Yelp
I've been to this location multiple times and have never had a problem before. But today my whole opinion on this location changed. I ordered the vegan taco salad with bagel chips. And the person who took my order responded by saying " it comes with bagel chips". I wouldn't think much of this while interaction had I received the bagel chips that " come with it"

Yelp
First time trying this place, I had the food dropped off by Uber eats and it came pretty hot still after the road, and I got my food quick within 15 minutes and I had it. It was full and packed perfectly, just fell apart a little bit but I had a lot so makes sense, everything taste fresh for the most part, I got the seasonal rosemary bread, it was a little dry and dense ngl. The pickled red onion taste a little unusual but everything else was spot on!

Prechous H.

Yelp
The bagels are always fresh and tasty! I typically get the Basic; with Tomato and Hatch Chile spread, on a spicy bagel. The Vanilla Chai with Oatmilk is equally great. The service is great, and quick even when the place is packed. I think the longest I've ever waited for my meal was 10 minutes. Ambiance is always family friendly.

Yelp
We are staying nearby on vacation and we decided to do a pickup for breakfast. We got different bagel sandwiches and coffee. I arrived they were nice, friendly and said they had my bag ready of food. They were working on the drinks. We were able to order and pay ahead the night before. Which was a great plan. The omelette sausage and cheese on a bagel was good and tasty. The only negatives and why I'm providing 4/5 stars is that none of the sandwiches were marked. It was game to see who had what. The late had 0 sugar in it. Other than that I would return.

Tarin B.

Yelp
So done with this place. Order a toasted bagel for the fourth straight time. Also in comments I said please toast well done and for the 4th straight got a bagel not toasted at all. Ridiculous, terrible...done with this place 4ever!!!

Yelp
Posting on behalf of the customer who was in front of me over the weekend. Customer asked to purchase 8 Jalapeño Cheddar bagels and was informed by the staff that he could only purchase 4 as it wouldn't leave any for other customers. Another staff member stated it wouldn't be fair. The customer was dumbfounded and just walked out. Otherwise I would have offered to buy the other four for him. Yes, a business has a right to manage their inventory accordingly but there were other ways this could have been handled that would have kept a customer. And folks, we're not talking about stock piling water, toilet paper, or a life saving drug. We're talking bagels. The next customer who wants a Jalapeño Cheddar bagel might have to accept the fact that they're out and choose something else. Or, here's a thought, make more bagels.

Yelp
Omg I was in vegan heaven eating my vegan breakfast sandwich and oat milk snickerdoodle latte! Vegan, or not there's plenty of options! Coming back more often now this is my go to spot now, and coming back tomorrow to show my hubby! I found out they're small business owned too! Support support support small businesses only!

Yelp
This location of Seize the Bagel is a VERY large establishment in a huge industrial complex off of a busy street in Vancouver. Service is fast and friendly, and the variety is wide. Items are made fresh daily. I'm from New York, and as such, tend to prefer their style of yeasty, malty, chewy, crispy, and intensely flavorful bagels. Seize the Bagel's offerings are definitely not this; they're most like "round white bread", but are definitely better than most of the other big chains. Their big selection of savory and sweet items as well as fresh-squeezed juices, low prices, and super friendly service are what earn Seize the Bagel four stars. The quality is exactly on-par with their Mill Plain location, so their consistency is spot-on as well.

Yelp
The food is always great! I would give it 5 stars for the food. The reason for the 3 stars is there were 4 young ladies working this Sunday morning and not one of them smiled. They all seemed to hate their job which is really too sad. This review is actually for the Manager. It seems time to figure out how to raise moral.

Barbara M.

Yelp
This shop has the best employees. On my way home from a difficult appointment their kindness and genuinely nice service made my day so much more better.

Yelp
If you're looking for a quality bagel, this is your place. They have a great selection that will satisfy whatever your craving may be. Stopping in for a late breakfast we got both the sausage, egg, and cheese, and the Degen. The sausage is turkey sausage and there is plenty of it. Got it with the everything bagel and it was solid. The Degen has a bit more action in it with both bacon and ham, and spread on the spicy bagel. The bagel was not too spicy and the sandwich is just amazing. To drink, we got the pear and peach smoothie. Probably one of the top flavor combos I've ever had. It was fantastic. Could have been blended a little longer because we still have some ice or frozen pieces seizing up the straw. I'm a bit of a cold brew connoisseur, so I had to try it. I'm not sure what they are brewing, but it is not good. I'd stay away from that. Service was fast and friendly and they even sell day old bagels (6 for $2). The restrooms and restaurant were also clean and pleasant. Go hungry, expect a good bagel, leave satisfied!

Jennesa G.

Yelp
Rudest employees you'll meet. I work in customer service and I have never treated a customer the way they treated me and my friend. Today We wanted to get some breakfast and were very polite and greeted the worker, she ignored our greeting and was very short with us over everything and kept glaring at us. We had a different lady at check out who was even more rude when all I did was ask how her day was. When the food came out it was lukewarm and the cheese wasn't even melted.

Barry B.

Yelp
Food is great! However, this is the only business I've ever been to that's purpose for being open is to sell food, yet basically stops selling a half hour before they close! If you are to walk in anytime after 3:30, they close at 4:00pm, your greeted with "We close soon" and most of the food is already been put away. WTH? You can walk into any other business that I've ever been to at 5 minutes before they close and they will still serve you. I'm not advocating this behavior but the point is still valid. Not sure if this is a management choice or an employee driven decision but I have spoken to more than a few individuals who also experienced this and found it quite odd.

Yelp
My son and I really enjoyed our bagel sandwiches while visiting firm out of town-the menu was pretty substantial, and I chose to build my own sandwich. Bagel shops are never cheap, (actually, the bagels are cheap, it's the cream cheese that cost you more than the bagel‍)but grocery stores don't carry awesome flavors, soooo... The staff was friendly and patient, and gave honest opinions for suggestions as we asked. I'll be going back tomorrow with my second son!

Yelp
I was so excited when this bagel shop opened in the complex I work in. It was so nice to walk to get something for lunch. The sad thing is most of us only have a limited time lunch hour. I'm disappointed that it takes 15 min to make a sandwich. And to witness coworkers just standing around chatting. I'm all for a great workplace atmosphere and when coworkers can get along. But, for the high price of a bagel sandwich ( which I don't mind paying for ) I'm disappointed in the time it takes now.

Tom N.

Yelp
We went as a group for coffee and bagels and a couple of people in our party needed to minimize their caffeine intake so asked for decaf. Nope. They don't have decaf. Being a caffeine addict myself it's no biggie but for a couple of the other people in our group... I have honestly never seen a coffee shop in my life that did not have decaf as an option.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
The bagels are soooo good! The snickerdoodle bagel should be illegal cause it's super addictive! I love that they offer vegan options. You can't tell that it's vegan! They also have a frosted snickerdoodle cookie that is to die for! Love these guys!

Yelp
Staff was friendly, the new location in Orchards was nice and clean. In an industrial park, there was plenty of parking and easy to get to off the highway, but the speed bumps in this complex are HUGE for some reason. Really super disappointed that their "Mac N Cheese" is KRAFT EASY MAC. (Called to verify, and they did confirm). Pretty crappy to order thinking you are going to get a good plate of macaroni, just to open it and find the same nastiness I could have purchased in a 4-pack for the price they sell it for. Transparency is important... update your menu board to reflect that you are selling Kraft Easy mac, and not actual Mac N Cheese. Egg Salad on an Onion Bagel: Heavy on the veggies, light on the egg salad... but flavor and the bagel itself were good, my friend said. Key Lime Tart: Canned lime jelly, it tasted like. It was odd that the crust and the whip topping were cold, but the jelly center wasnt? But it tasted ok for the price. Polish Bagel Dog: Just ok. I was SO hoping for out of this world at this place, and am very disappointed.

Yelp
Two out-of-towners on the hunt for genuine breakfast, we found "Seize the Bagel's" Breakfast Sandwiches. I had the Greek Eggel on an Everything Bagel. Comes with an omelet, spinach, tomato, onion but, most notably the very tasty Olive Cream Cheese! As bagels will do, it kinda fell apart after the first bite but, it was still good to the last bite. My daughter had Sausage, Egg & Cheddar on everything, which was good but, a couple of packets of Cholula made it better. We took home a Baker's Dozen (13) of sesame, onion, everything, garlic and some w/cheeses on top. These appear to be the real thing and properly boiled. IMHO, they're a little underbaked so they stay nice and soft. I prefer a little harder crust but, I'll just toast them longer. The Lox Cream Cheese was terrific and quick chunky with lox bits. I think I'll come back to try Italian Bkft Eggel or the lunch Cubano or Reuben (although they have no rye or pumpernickel bagel to put it on.) Still, a great, authentic choice if you don't want a boring, nontraditional "round roll" like you'd find anywhere else.

Yelp
Yummy bagels!!!! First time eating here and I will be returning when I come to visit Vancouver again.

Rose D.

Yelp
They have quite a variety of freshly made bagels along with bagel sandwiches to choose from for breakfast & lunch. They also sell their day-old bagels for $2 a bag (they are located on the half-wall that separates the counter from the dining area so it would be easy to miss them as you normally would be facing the other direction). The bagels we tried were very good. Their fruit cup was good quality, but still a bit overpriced, in my opinion, at $3.50. This location is quite large with a lot of seating. There is even more tables & chairs on the other side beyond the counter/kitchen area that might be a place you can reserve for meetings, but I'm not sure. They also have a small children's play area to occupy the kiddos. It wasn't obvious to us which side of the counter the line formed on, and apparently most folks we observed coming in after us had the same issue. Though, in hindsight it makes sense the line would start closest to the entrance (on the left side of the counter) but time and again most people went to the right. It might be helpful to hang a sign from the ceiling to "Order Here" or something like that (and if there is one we & others completely missed it).

Yelp
This used to be our go to bagel place. We love the seize the bagel off Mill plain so we were super excited when this one was built near our house. However, this establishment particularly goes through ups and downs. When it gets a good manager, things flow perfectly. When it gets a bad manager, everything falls apart. Today I went into purchase a dozen bagels. They didn't have a dozen bagels because they're now limiting the quantity in which they produce every day. So I opted to take the nine bagels that were left. I was told that I could only have four bagels because I was not allowed to have all the bagels. it was around 11 o'clock and I'm pretty sure not that many more people were going to come in. It makes absolutely no sense to limit the customer who are willing to pay for the bagels that are there, only to satisfy one or two customers that come in later. I have no clue what they are doing at all anymore. I was told that I should purchase the bagels a day before I wanted them. Normally we would come in and grab two bagels to eat for ourselves and then grab a dozen bagels for us and our children to munch on throughout the week. Looks like I'm gonna need to start looking for another bagel shop if this is the kind of service that we're forced into now. I will say there is no sign that says we reserve the right to limit quantities. There is no information on their website saying that you can't order X number of bagels a day. I'm just really confused with this new policy. Bad business all around.

Yelp
This place was ok. The bacon egg and cheese Parmesan cheese breakfast sandwich was not too bad. Light and fluffy bagel and pretty hot temp wise. The bacon was tasty. Too bad it's like a microwaved egg and bacon tho. I think it costs me $4 bucks or do for it. I will come back and try a bagel with cream cheese. Overall nice place with friendly service. Oh they had some good tunes playing too when I was there that morning. I like how you don't have to open the front door to enter they slide up for you.
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
If I could rate 6 stars I would. Everything was delicious. We got the Cuban9 on a jalapeño cheddar and the degen. Bothe were amazing but the cubano was AMAZING! Service was fantastic. First time in so they gave us a chocolate cupcake on the house and a whole pastrami sandwich. Which was also amazing. Such sweet staff. Thank you so much!
google avatar

Avielle L.

Yelp
Every single time I doordash a bagel I request it toasted, it has yet to arrive toasted even once. Do y'all have a toaster or????
google avatar

S L.

Yelp
My coworkers and I have been eagerly waiting for this place to open since we work in the next building over. When we saw it was open we all but raced over. The place is clean and bright and you're hit with an outrageously good aroma when you walk in. The staff was very friendly and fast. I ordered a toasted jalapeño bagel with jalapeño cream cheese and a garlic chicken bialy. The bagel was delicious and fresh with just the right amount of heat, and with the jalapeño cream cheese it tasted like a jalapeño popper! I'm saving the garlic chicken bialy for later but it looks smells really good. We'll be coming by again, for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
So good! My favorite is the turkey bagel sandwich with basil cream cheese. The choc vegan cupcake is the best I've had in a long time. Perfect frosting and super moist.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good choices, friendly people I have to write more so the name seize them bagel I like
google avatar

Shelbey L.

Yelp
Their food is really really good and reasonably priced but every time I come in here, the staff is so rude. So if you don't care about customer service but want really yummy bagels, this is the place for you!
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
5 STARS! BEST VEGAN BREAKFAST SANDWICH EVER!!!! Vegan sausage, egg, cheese on a jalapeño bagel. This place is a local gem and I'm thrilled to have found it. Delicious food, yummy smoothies, and the most magical sweet treats! The cinnamon roll was heavenly and the staff is just as sweet! Highly recommend this place - the prices are great and the location is clean and spacious. But the food if the star of the show. I'll be back many many times :)
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
Mediocre at best. Service was okay - restaurant was cleanly. Couldn't even tell the bagel was toasted (still not sure it was) by how lightly it was toasted. Cream cheese on the thin side. Bathrooms not stocked. Decent selection but quality is sub-par.
google avatar

Jamal C.

Yelp
This is thee spot. Friendly staff. Great food. Vegan options. Clean. Plenty of parking. There are no down sides. Well one. I wish they were open all day! So I could get a smoothie
google avatar

Cindy M.

Yelp
And now there is no parm bagel plus a few others were removed. Tomato herb cream cheese is different. Guess maybe time to learn how to make my own.
google avatar

Kerri E.

Yelp
I went to the DMV next door and then stopped by Seize the Bagel for a delicious bagel, toasted with peanut butter. They have SO many bagel options and topings. I got a jalapeno and cheddar cheese bagel to go, for later. Scrumptious. The staff were super friendly. Dining room had PLENTY of seating and nice, clean bathrooms. Really glad I stopped by and will go back to try some other items, like the cookies they were selling. Worth it!
google avatar

Jenny E.

Yelp
I got The Degan (Egg Omelet, Ham, Bacon, Pepper Jack, Tomato Herb Cream Cheese on Hot'n Spicy Bagel).. a little pricey, but not bad overall. I'll definitely be back to try some of their other menu items!

Yelp
1st time visiting. Was really looking forward to a great bagel and finding a new place to eat. They have a great selection of bagels and sandwich choices, along with sweets and full coffee bar. I ordered a breakfast sandwich, hot tea and 1/2 dozen bagels. Unfortunately, one and done for this location. Asked for lightly toasted breakfast bagel sandwich. Bagel was not toasted but microwaved with the egg, ham and cheese. Didn't realize cream cheese was not part of the sandwich until too late. Guess I should have asked. Wanted hot tea, the tea I wanted was empty, asked if they had more of the flavor I wanted, while waiting, one of the workers burned her hand taking a very full cup of coffee out of the microwave. Others workers didn't seem to know what to do or have anything in place on how to treat or help her. I hope she is ok. They seemed more concerned on who would take the reheated coffee to the customer. A box of tea was brought out but the wrong flavor. Meanwhile my bagel was getting cold so I skipped the tea, had them wrap my bagel to go and left. Did witness 2 of the employees talking and eye rolling while watching the injured co-worker. I am looking forward to trying the bagels I brought home. The sandwich had potential, wish it had been toasted. The egg was premade scrambled and had 2 slices of deli type ham with cheddar cheese.
google avatar

Brad L.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and bagels. They say they close at 4:00pm, they actually close earlier than that. Called to order a sandwich 15 minutes before they actually post when they close. I was told they couldn't do that as they had turned off their toasters and could only give some bagged bagels. So they don't close at 4:00, they close for service 15-30 before that unless you want cold bagged bagels.

Katelyn L.

Yelp
Expensive. I got 3 bagels, all sandwiches - bacon, egg and cheese. Canadian bacon, egg and cheese and I got a "specialty" bagel called "South of The Border". Mine was pretty good. The other regular bagels, I guess you would call them, where just plain bagels.. not sure if I had to ask for the cream cheese but there was any on them so my daughter didn't care for it. Also.. now that I'm thinking about it, the person who took my order didn't even ask me if I wanted cream cheese nor did he offer guidance when I told him it was our first time.. lol. Very pricey for a bagel combo I can easily make at home. I was expecting sandwiches I haven't ever thought of making but they were all pretty common sandwiches, just with bagels. They have a coffee menu, although.. i think they should just stick to bagels. They also have smoothies as well. Calzones.. menu attached. I love that they have a children's play area too! With Lysol wipes handy. All in all, I would just order my bagel with no drinks next time.

Veronika B.

Yelp
Honestly awful customer service. Girl with green hair was extremely rude. I asked for a nutrition menu and they looked at me like I was insane, then proceeded to tell me they didn't have one. It is legally required by the FDA that all restaurants must have a nutritional menu for standard menu items. I literally got a plain bagel, how do you not have the nutrition facts available for that? I also should add that a plain bagel with cream cheese is $5. I will not be returning, and hope they get a nutritional menu before someone reports them.
google avatar

Nickie Mae B.

Yelp
They were super friendly and very fast. I ordered the blt light. It was yummy. I thought it would have bacon on it. It was in the spread. Very interesting. Try it some time. I'm full and happy.

Colton J.

Yelp
Had breakfast in here food was fine but the tables were sticky watched the red head cashier come out and half ass wipe down the tables and half ass sweep but makes you wonder if the basics get half assed that bad what is happening with your food
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
It states clearly on their doors and website that they are open at 5am. To my surprise I arrive at 5:35am and left at the door with no answer. I called their number and then was told they open at 6am.
google avatar

Chelsea C.

Yelp
Seize the Bagel was a last minute stop as we were running around Vancouver looking for a quick breakfast bite. Seize the Bagel had a variety of options at reasonable prices. Classics bagels with spread, sandwiches, and new combinations really brought together the freedom of their menu. Although I don't live in Vancouver, I'll always know where to stop if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Tali J.

Yelp
The only bagel shop in Vancouver we go to. Their sandwiches are the best and the chai latte is so good!
