Sek Yuen Restaurant

Lovely traditional cantonese style restaurant with nice dishes! The pipe duck was very good, crispy skin and meat was not dry. The egg stir fry with carrots and fake shark fins was also very good. We had many dishes and everyone enjoyed the food! The food variety was huge so everyone could pick out something which they like to eat!

Five Blessings Cold Dish* - A must-have dish for wedding banquets, a bit too luxurious for everyday meals! Delicious! Crispy Duck* - Crispy-skinned duck, the plum sauce helps cut through the richness. Eight Treasure Duck* - Tender and juicy duck meat that melts in your mouth. The filling is very generous, especially the soft and tender lotus seeds! Osmanthus Shark Fin - Scrambled eggs shaped like osmanthus flowers, served with vegetarian shark fin or vermicelli, hence the name Osmanthus Shark Fin. Rest assured, this dish does not use real shark fin. The eggs have a firm and dry texture; seasoned with a little vinegar and served on lettuce, it's especially delicious! Creamy Shrimp - Not particularly memorable. Salted Egg Yolk Squid - Plenty of salted egg yolk, with a sandy texture and a wonderful aroma. Not too much salty egg white was used, so it wasn't too salty, and the squid was exceptionally fresh and springy. Chaozhou Steamed Grouper - The broth was very flavorful and refreshing, but there was a slight fishy taste in the fish, so I wouldn't recommend it. Sweet and Sour Pork - The sweet and sour flavor is great with rice; kids should love it. Golden Tofu - Tofu served with pumpkin sauce, but the pumpkin flavor wasn't very pronounced; the tofu itself was good. Shenjiang Tofu - Tofu served with vegetables and a rich sauce perfect for mixing with rice; also a great dish for both the elderly and children. Yangzhou Fried Rice - Great wok hei (wok aroma) Stir-fried Pork Belly with Chive Blossoms - The pork belly is roasted pork, and the chive blossoms are very crisp, but the whole dish is a bit oily. - In conclusion, this restaurant is a safe bet; you can't go wrong with almost anything, and the prices are reasonable. Some specialty dishes require reservations two days in advance (marked with *).

Food: Very good, traditional, and price friendly. Loved every dish. Some traditional items need to be pre booked at least two days in advance. We always come here for a meal whenever we in KL. Service: Not bad. The staff can speak Cantonese mandarin and english, and the menu is available in both Chinese and English, so ordering is easy. Atmosphere: The one I visited is their original shop, which doesn’t have aircon. They have another shop right next door with aircon, you can check with the staff.

Restoran Sek Yun is worth a visit for the vibe and ambiance—it has a lively, bustling atmosphere that makes for an enjoyable dining experience. However, I found the food to be underwhelming and not quite matching the hype. It’s fine for a casual meal, but don’t come expecting anything extraordinary. A practical tip: be prepared to queue unless you make a reservation in advance, as the place gets busy quickly, especially on weekends. Overall, I’d recommend it more for the experience and setting rather than the cuisine itself.

A very well-known restaurant in KL that I’ve been wanting to try for a long time — unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. Golden Tofu Even a small neighborhood restaurant can usually execute this dish well. What we tasted was a rough texture, lacking the aroma of eggs and the fragrance of a properly fried outer layer. The sauce tasted strongly of chicken seasoning powder — flat and one-dimensional — as if no proper soup base had been prepared. Almond Chicken The dish was overwhelmed by thick, deep-fried batter coated with almonds. The batter was slightly burnt, and the chicken inside was dry and tasteless. For an experienced restaurant, this was a complete miss. Steamed Fish This was the most disappointing dish. The fish appeared to be frozen stock, and it was under-steamed — still raw inside when served. After we raised the issue, it was taken back to continue steaming. Unfortunately, the result was overcooked fish with a tough, unpleasant texture. The entire dish lacked proper control and execution. Overall, it did not meet the expectations set by its reputation. First and last visit.

Situated along a busy road in Pudu, this is KL Famous and well known Restoran Sek Yuen. Came here to try it's popular roasted duck "Pei Pa Ngap" ( in Cantonese). Interior decoration still remain like old time 70's but the dining ambience is so nostalgic. The dishes taste good and all of us walk out satisfied and full.

14/December/2025 Had lunch here with my local friends. Food were good. Certain signature dishes required reservation, do take note. This restaurant is non-aircon, can be warm in the midday. Parking is available behind the restaurant.

A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT & REGRET! Don’t bother to eat this so-called popular Cantonese restaurant. Ambience: 2/5 Food: 1/5 Service: 3/5 Quality of food: NEGATIVE The worst of the worst. Shark fin soup: Just a few strains. Crab meat ZERO freshness. Mushy. Pork ribs: Not fresh. Meat has been over tenderized. Prawn roll: Flavorless. Bad! Steam fish: Smelly fish being served. Not fresh. Tasteless. Dead!!! Don’t come. God forbids!

Oldest Chinese restaurant in Kuala Lumpur! They are in 3 separate buildings due to expansions. The dining areas are nothing to brag about, basic and bare, but adequate. Service is efficient and quick. They have many signature dishes and some like the 8 treasures duck needs 3 day advance order. Over all a very good restaurant.

Sek Yuen is a real hidden gem. The roasted duck was super crispy and full of flavor. The place feels old-school, but in a really good way!

Can you taste and experience the difference? I ordered half of a duck as it appears to be a popular food option based on past reviews. This is a popular restaurants among local. Just a heads up to foreigners, they don't have a menu, but they did have a young waitress who spoke English. If you are able to speak a regional language, you just name what dish you want prepared. My duck was a bit of an eye opener. I am very custom to having fatty duck that having lean ducks was a breath of fresh air. The duck along with the sauce was delicious. It was simple but yet the meal was more meaningful I have previously encountered. The meal provided a new sense of appreciation regarding meal and food consumption. Since they didn't have a menu, I didn't quite know the price. I paid approximately 39 malaysian ringgit (close to $9.50).

Price point is a little steep for an unassuming neighborhood restaurant. We ordered the steamed pompano, squid, mixed veggies and duck. While the duck was good, the fish was way too expensive.

The best authentic food experience ever in a long time. I often get emotionally touched by things, but rarely by food. This dinner reminded me about my childhood, my grandma, home, family & traditions, I almost cried (def my heart) The sweetes hostes - an elderly grandma, caring for me & looking after I have what I need. Just amazing!

Came here for first time with local friend. HSD the roast duck, pork soup with figs, egg with shark fin and crab, kang kong, and ended with pancake with lotus paste filling. All the dishes were very flavorful, also had some shell in my crabmeat egg. Roast duck was not fatty which was nice. The soup had nice pork flavor and the fig was pleasant sweetness. Servers were nice too. No prices on menu, but our bill was fair and reasonable, so trust them. The lotus paste filled pancake was nice way to end our dinner.

One of the oldest and traditional restaurants in KL/Pudu. This place was opened many many years ago and has 2 sides of the restaurant. One is the old side (without aircond) and the other side has aircond. This place is run by a family. That's why mostly the employees are old or mixed up. What's good here? Well, i normally go with the pei pa duck which is crispy and awesome! The skin is crispy and the meat is tender. DELICIOUS! Vegetables - You can just ask them what vegetable that they have for the day..and you pick your choice and the style of cooking (with belacan or just normal plain garlic style). Sometimes, we will have the sang choi pow..which is fried egg + crab meat + some glass noodles..you wrap it with raw vege (iceberg lettuce leaves) it's sorta the salad in asian way. During Chinese New Year, you can have the traditional yee sang...which is raw fish slices with strips of ginger in the yee sang. That's the olden version of yee sang in a more wealthy way. Or you can always order the jellyfish version. If you want to have a dinner here during Chinese New Year, a more customised way, you can book a table here and order the dishes first. Of course, a deposit would be needed (Just in case if you don't appear)...There are all sorts of dishes and they will recommend to you too! One of my faves. Hands. Friggin. Down. My family has been going here for literally generations. This place be hella old. I'm gonna be completely not-politically correct and suggest you get the sharks fin egg lettuce wraps. Yes. Good Lord. Another thing that sends the cherubim of heaven into sweet, melodic, song is the poached chicken with ginger sauce. Dat sauce. Also, the Pat Poh Ngap is one of the best I've ever tasted. Though, that said, it's a little difficult to compare with other places because I've pretty much only had it here and one other place. Go. You'll discover the meaning of true love.

Really great Chinese food, and super friendly and helpful staff. I don't know if I've ever had my cup of tea refilled so quickly and so many times. The prices are quite good as well.

Comforting fare cooked by elderly chefs in a restaurant filled with nostalgia and history, that's what Sek Yuen is all about. They certainly know their Cantonese cuisine as every dish is cooked with love and just the right touch of saltiness. The walls, decked with black and white photographs depict the years they have toiled to achieve the top-notch status that they currently hold. So onwards with the food! Start off with the cold appetizer dish that comes in a huge plate (Lang poon) filled with various morsels of delight from mushrooms, boiled jellyfish, sesame infused meats and seafood. The perfect way to cleanse one's palate before the torrid of dishes begin. The roast duck was just perfectly thin and crispy, the way it should be done while the braised lamb dish was hearty fare and sauce amazing doused over the fluffy white rice. We also ordered 2 different greens to balance out the meal. They of course came well fried and still crunchy. Overall, don't expect fine dining, but do expect to walk out with a very full stomach

Went here with the fam for CNY eve lunch. Heard a lot about this restaurant being the oldest Chinese restaurant in KL...plus, they use wood-ovens to cook the food. SOO I was pretty excited to try it. The menu was pre-selected and booked by my aunt, so we didn't actually have much of a choice. Of course, we started with yee sang - which was delicious! Great taste but no salmon. Regardless, it was the tastiest yee sang I had all CNY. Then we had the four seasons dish (basically a seafood platter) which was also pretty good. Next came sauteed chives with roasted pork belly - noms! Great dish - generous on the pork. Then, we had fried yam topped with cashew nuts, diced chicken, onions and bell peppers. Small portion but delicious. I wasn't too impressed with the Chinese mushroom dish which came next - average. Pork ribs were awesome. Chunky, meaty, perfectly done. Steamed fish was also average but fresh. Last but not least came the duck. This famous duck that everyone was raving about was definitely too hyped up. The skin was amazing but there was barely any meat and the meat was tough. I've had better duck. Ambience wise, it's your typical chinese coffee shop...super casual and loud..holes in the tablecloths etc. But I think it adds to the "old" feel. We sat at the outside part of the restaurant since the ACed side was full. Despite being outside, they had a lot of fans and good ventilation. I'd be excited to come back and order some of their other dishes. A great first experience.

Try the crisp duck and salted fish steam with minced pork. Authentic cooking. A cuisine way back to memory lane!

What I am looking for- great food and right atmosphere. Awesome place to blend in with the locals.
