The Best Ethiopian Restaurants in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"Selam, once a longtime Minnehaha Avenue coffee shop, blossomed into a full-service restaurant not long after the onset of the pandemic. Owners Belai Mergia and Rahel Tassew serve fine samosas — crispy on the outside; steaming when they’re cracked open — alongside tender lamb awaze tibs; generous vegetarian platters; kitfo; and rich, fiery doro wot." - Ali Elabbady

My first time trying Ethiopian food and I was so impressed. The food was absolutely delicious! The waitresses were sweet and provided great service. The owner was so personable and polite. We enjoyed the Ethiopian music and hospitality. Thanks for an excellent experience.

First time visiting the restaurant. Interior design is awesome and restaurant is neat , service is okay ( it might be cuz I went around the closing hours but couldn’t be an excuse. I tried ጎመን በስጋ. I love their presentation of the food but taste wasn’t meet my expectations. Restroom was clean but cleaning chemical smell was intense. Overall my experience was okay.

Stopped in and picked up kitfo, alicha wot, doro wot, and lentil samosa. First time eating lentil samosa and I liked it with the sweet dipping sauce. The doro wot was just perfection in its savory goodness (quite meaty chicken leg too). Kitfo beef was cooked rare and was unbelievably good (some of the best kitfo I've ever had). Alicha wot had very good cubed beef that was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. Everyone was friendly and the portion sizes and prices were reasonable. I don't know if Selam is the best Ethiopian restaurant in Minnesota, but it's definitely in the conversation!

My wife and I had an amazing experience. We were coming from out of town from Rochester MN (1.5 hrs away), and every mile was worth it. The food was amazing, we had the Salem meat combo for 2. The food was well-seasoned and fresh, the staff were very humble, and their bathrooms were very clean (which is something I always appreciate about any establishment). This restaurant is truly representative of Ethiopian culture (the ancestor's would be very proud). I hope you all have an exceptional time there as we had, and can't wait to eat there again soon.

Outstanding Customer Service at Salem Ethiopian Restaurant I had an exceptional experience at Salem Ethiopian Restaurant, and the customer service was truly the highlight of my visit. From the moment we walked in, the staff greeted us with warm smiles and genuine hospitality that made us feel immediately welcome. If you're looking not only for delicious food but also for a welcoming and attentive dining experience, Salem Ethiopian Restaurant is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Great, authentic cuisine. It was a little spicy for me, but I could tell the food was top notch. Can’t wait to go back and try something different!

Yelp
Stopped here on the way to catch a flight home. A wonderful family owned restaurant. The seating was very American, I was hoping for more traditional basket tables and stools...but never the less clean and bright location. We were the only patrons at the time so service was good and fast. We ordered a variety platter of meat and veggies. The food was amazing. The beef top had great flavor and the chicken was tinder. Overall, this was a great experience. I do wish they carried Ethiopian honey wine, but they did have some good Ethiopian beer!

Yelp
Yummmmmmmmmy. Amazing time super charming staff. Have eaten at many different Ethiopian restaurants in many states. This place is great and an amazing value for the money.

Yelp
Fabulous neighborhood joint that I've passed way too many times without going in. I always assumed it was just a coffee shop but then realized they serve food! The ambiance is lovely, low key but beautiful with murals and lovely baskets and decor. The staff was friendly and prompt with the service. The food was delicious. The friendly cook came out to ask us how the food was and chatted with our 4 year old about his meal. We will be regulars!

Yelp
The food was amazing! I used to go to Fasika in St.Paul, but they closed down. If you are a Minnesota native, you know that was the go to spot. Selam was so good. There was a little bit of a wait, but well worth it because the food came out super fresh and so good. I got the Beef Tibs platter and added, greens, lentils, and cottage cheese! Everyone please check them out!

Yelp
Love this place. The owner is so welcoming and comes by to make sure you're enjoying everything. Here, you're encouraged to take your time with your meal. My teens loved the coffee ceremony. As a group of three, we had a combo platter and samosas. The samosas were so fresh and hot. The combo platter gave us the perfect amount of variety, with the beef tibs being a real favorite. It was all so hot and freshly made, we felt like lucky guests at a family establishment. Support this wonderful spot!

Yelp
Amazing food, thoughtful and pleasant staff, charming ambiance, tasty vegetarian options, variety of exceptional cuisine which will please both mild Scandinavian palettes or thrill those who enjoy a bit of spice. I can't recommend this establishment highly enough, have to start coming here often!!

Yelp
Some friends and I stopped in Selam for a late lunch, never having had Ethiopian but excited to try something new! My bf and I split the veggie combo and the awaze lamb tibs and were very satisfied with our choices. The lamb had such a nice level of spice to it and was the perfect portion. The veggie combo was massive and the lentils were 100/10! Service was great too, with both the owner and chef stopping by a few times to see what we thought and if we were enjoying our meals. They even offered to make more of some of the veggies for us to take home in a to go box! We'd definitely come back

Yelp
Repeat customer, food always excellent. Had the special beef tibs, doulet and veggie combo. Went with me kids, we ate it all. Friendly service, spacious seating and spotless bathroom.

Yelp
If I could give 6 stars I would! We were on the hunt for Ethiopian food since we don't have much near our home. Home run at Selam! Low key and unpretentious. Staff were super helpful and friendly and great with the kids. The combos were HUGE and served 3. Everything was delicious especially the spongy sweet injera. Easy parking. Not super busy when we visited. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Thank you for the delicious take out order today. Love the lentil sambosa! Shrio Wot yummy! And enough injira to last into next week. Also thank you for the free coffee, that was great. See you soon. My wife will love.

Yelp
Authentic Ethiopian food with the nicest staff. I ordered the vegetarian combo with lentil samosa and kitfo. Everything was really delicious and i ended it with a chai tea latte.

Hannah T.

Yelp
One of the best ethiopian restaurants in minneapolis. Family owned and they give generous portions. Always kind and they give you a call to check to see if you've enjoyed the food!

Yelp
This restaurant gas it all: excellent service, friendly owners, and delicious food. With every bite my tastebuds feels like the 4th of July. So many flavors! We'll be back again.

Yelp
I ate lunch here yesterday. The owner greeted us at the door and made a delicious coffee. Then served lentil sambucas and the vegetarian combo platter for two. Everything was absolutely beautifully presented and delicious. The owner was friendly and the price was reasonable. I will definitely eat here again.

Yelp
Fantastic Ethiopian, generous portions, great service. Coffee was rich and full of flavor. Highly, highly recommend! I brought my BIL here to try Ethiopian as he has never had it before. He is now a fan! We got the vegetarian combo, lentil samosa, and a beef dish; sorry I forgot what it's called. ‍ This place will fulfill your craving!

Yussef J.

Yelp
The food and service are phenomenal with each visit. I always stop in for a vegetarian platter to go before driving back to Rochester from MSP airport. It is such a lovely treat. I highly recommend if you are in the mood for delicious Ethiopian food or just wanting to try something new. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend Selam restaurant on Minnehaha Avenue at 39th St. They recently started serving Ethiopian food after being a coffee shop for many years. This is a family run restaurant, and they've done a great job of making it feel welcoming with a distinct Ethiopian atmosphere!

Yelp
We accidentally walked into Selam Restaurant. We were not recommended it by anyone, nor had we heard about it before. Having eaten at a large number of Ethiopian restaurants in the Twin Cities, this is by far the most authentic tasting Ethiopian cuisine I've had, besides my moms cooking. The pricing of the dishes is quite fair. We had the vegetarian combo with lentil sambusa, and this one plate could feed two to three people. The service was great and the staff was extremely kind and friendly. We are extremely glad we came across this great establishment.

Yelp
My wife and I ordered takeout from Selam last weekend. We miss Lucy's Ethiopian Market and were looking for another great Ethiopian restaurant nearby. (Others in South Minneapolis are great, too... but just not quite Lucy's). Selam was WONDERFUL. We ordered the Selam combo, which includes both meat dishes and veggie dishes. The owner(?) or primary person responsible when I called was super friendly, taking time to explain the menu to me and recommended a few specific dishes to include in the combo. She and her colleague were also super friendly and kind when I picked up our order. Most importantly, the food was amazing - certainly among the best Ethiopian meals I have ever had. I generally prefer the meat dishes, but also loved Selam's veggie options. My wife generally prefers the veggie dishes, but also loved the Selam's meat options. To please both of our picky tastes means the food was spot on. I hope this restaurant does really well - they deserve it. Try it!

Yelp
Selam Coffee just reopened as Selam Restaurant, and I'm so impressed. The space is lovely, the owners are warm and welcoming, and the food is freshly prepared and fabulous. I really like Ethiopian food, and Selam will now be my go-to restaurant for it.

Sarah T.

Yelp
The absolute best Doro Wot in the Twin Cities! Great service and space too! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Delicious food. The beef tibs and the vegetarian combo were exquisite, especially the shiro wat. Friendly owners with a lot of justifiable pride in their food. We'll be back.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much when you walk past, but its a humble and delicious place to visit for authentic Ethiopian food! Would come back again!
