A Guide to the Middle Eastern Restaurants in Chicago’s Southwest Suburbs

"Selma has the most limited options of the many dessert spots in Bridgeview, but it perhaps has the most special. Amongst the rotating gelato flavors it rotates from day to day is mastic gelato, a popular ice cream flavor through Arabic world; it’s one of the view places in the Chicago area to get it fresh. Other desserts also rotate. The knafa na’ima has a thick, flavorful semolina topping and is generous on the cheese. The harissa — a semolina cake often made with coconut which is also known as basboosa in its Egyptian iterations — is also excellent. Selma’s serves a variety studded with anise, black seed, and sesame. Keep an eye out for Ramadan offerings, like qata’if (a pastry stuffed with nuts) and different seasonal drinks, like karkade, a hibiscus iced tea." - N.A. Mansour

If you’re looking for authentic Middle Eastern suites this is the spot. Selma hits all corners of The Levant. From Lebanese suites to Palestinian to Syrian and everything in between. This is a family owned business and the family actually runs the business. They are very kind and make you feel just like home. There’s a lot of space to sit and enjoy your most nostalgic childhood memory suite with a friend or a family member the next time you’re visiting little Palestine please be sure to put this on one of your side quest! Something I’d like to add to this location is its peaceful atmosphere. I believe it would be a great place to get some work done.

This is the best kunefe you can try in Chicago! The cheese tastes so good and the price is really reasonable seeing how good the quality is! My husband loves it, and we will always visit this place every time we travel over to Chicago. Thank you for giving us this experience. It's been a while since we had such good kunefe! Keep it up, guys!

First let’s start with how amazing and sweet the owner is. I got there at 9:50. I live in Rockford, but had to bring someone to Chicago and I was super hungry. I got here for desserts and she didn’t have knafeh she said I’m so sorry I close in 10 mins so me thinking he she wasn’t selling anything she still had some stuff I can’t remember the name of any of it but the one with pistachio is my absolute favorite and the one with coconut is really good as well. If you don’t like coconut you will not like it. She even gave me 2 free items. She told me come back anytime. She was sooooo sweet and explained every dessert to me which was sweet. Thank you for taking me even though you closed in 10 mins it meant a lot to me. I suggest if you haven’t went here do go. She’s well worth it and the prices are amazing for sizes I spent 9 dollars on 2 desserts and a Salam coke.

Try this Selma sweets on 103rd and Harlem. Their desserts are so good. If you are looking for uniqueness and less sweet desserts, come and visit this place.

Google
Came by to get a treat for myself. The Gelato was so pretty and tasty and the woman who helped me was very polite. Since it was still sunlight out it wasn't very busy but I want to come back either at night or after Ramadan to try more. 💚🇵🇸

Google
Really good Gelato! We tried the raspberry cheesecake and mint chocolate. Highly recommend!

Google
This is hands down the best sweet shop I’ve ever visited. They offer a wide variety of high-quality sweets. The last time I was here, the lady treated me with great respect and was so kind that she even gave me a sample of one of the sweets to try. During our trip this week, I stayed overnight in Illinois just to get more Kunafa. It’s absolutely the best. This is the finest kunafa I’ve ever had and the lady here today, and I believe her son were super nice to me. I highly recommend this place. Check out the photo for the Mistika gelato! It tastes so good!

Google
We found this place when we Googled desserts near me. The desserts were fantastic and the owners were very friendly and walked us through the options as first time visitors. We enjoyed our selections at the tables and bought some more to take home. We will be back for another visit. I highly recommend Selma's Sweets!

Yelp
We were in Bridgeview and wanted to try a dessert spot. We first went to Elshafei Sweets based on good online reviews, but to be honest, some items looked dried out and nothing looked too appealing. You know what they say -- you "eat" first with your eyes. There's been a lot of hype around ZMZM Sweets, but the online reviews haven't been stellar (as of this writing), so we shelved that for a future trip. We settled instead on Selma's Sweets. The interior is pretty spacious, and they offer ice cream and coffee in addition to Middle Eastern desserts. I bought two items to take home -- a piece of basbousa with some sort of custard or cheese filling, and a small piece of harissa. I also got a free sample of something that seemed to be semolina and black seed, though the black seed was overpowering. The basbousa and harissa were both very good. The basbousa was moist and bursting with flavor. I would have been okay without the center filling. The harissa wasn't the best I've had, but not bad at all. I would say Albasha Sweets is still my favorite in this area, and from what I recall the prices were cheaper there, but Selma's is a nice alternative to keep in mind.

Yelp
the man told me to take my service animal outside despite the fact my mother explained to him and his female coworker in Arabic that service dogs are legally allowed in any store area where the general public are allowed. also my mother is a medical doctor. you are lucky we did not report you to the better business bureau or the police for breaking the law. the state of Illinois has additional state laws regarding service animals on top of the Federal law: the Americans with disabilities act. not all service dogs are large Labrador retrievers. my fiance tried to give the employees a card that has the law on it and they didn't even take it let alone attempt to read it. my family has gone to this business for years, but now we may never go again. we were considering placing an order with this business for an upcoming wedding in our family but now we will take our business elsewhere.

Yelp
Met a work colleague here because the Starbucks right across was closed for training. We had coffee and their delicious melt in your mouth dessert kanafa. I have walked the earth this long without eating this mouth watering delight. Enjoyed every bite of it and crashed my no sugar diet without regret. I will be coming back for more when I am in the area. Our server was lovely and attentive!

Yelp
Great shop with different dessert options like Kunaafa and ice cream! We ordered Kunafa Naame (soft) from this place and it was really yummy! Totally reminds me of places back home. Staff were friendly as well. Lots of parking in the lot.
google avatar

Yelp
Was here again, and the young guy helped with our order. very nice and very helpful. The best Kunafeh in town and freshly made. A gem for the village of Bridgeview.

Haifa Z.

Yelp
Tastiest Kunafa ever. It was my first time in Chicago. This place was recommended to me by a friend. I stopped by on my way to the airport. They have so many amazing desserts options that I wanted to try but I stuck to my favorite Kunafa. It was amazing. I am glad I also bought a frozen one to take with me. The service is great. Friendly and helpful people.

Yelp
Amazing middle eastern sweets in a clean and welcoming atmosphere. I highly recommend the kunafa or "mutabak" sweet bread stuffed with sweet cheese or nuts
google avatar

Mandy P.

Yelp
Got some sweets here. Really cute spot, kind of like froyo shop vibes with colorful chairs. Not sure what all the sweets are called but they are tasty. My dad always brings back some when he is in that area. Turnovers are sweet and fragrant. Cakes are coco nutty and moist.

Yelp
Ok let's discuss! One of the best places to get knafa!! Knafa is a Middle Eastern dessert that is made with phyllo dough and a special cheese made for this dessert. This dessert originated from Nablus, Palestine and tastes amazing here! This bakery makes it fresh every day and it garages like home! You can also get other middle eastern desserts like baklawa, burma, other Arab cookies and NOW GELATO! They also serve their dessert in gelato sandwiches! I was able to try whatever flavor I want! They're also title sponsors for Team Palestine for PCRF's Run for Peace 5K! This is a place that cares about their customers and their community! I always make the drive for their sweets. It's great as a gift for my gluttony!

Yelp
Best sweets in bridge view , deliciousKnafa great service, generous portions, friendly staff , very clean , but they need to update their venue , poor decorations

Yelp
Lunch at another place was a disappointment, so we decided to stop here for dessert to end our day the way we started : pleasant! (Successful shopping at Walmart art and Aldi) I did not expect this place to be so large - - what a nice place! The lady behind the counter was very nice also. There is a wide assortment of sweet treats here and I hope to be back to try out more. Today, I got a small cup of coffee. It was a pretty decent cup of coffee and it only cost $1.00! We both got kunafa. There seem to be a number of different ways to spell the name of this dessert. I think there are a few different ways to make it also. One of my neighbor's makes kunafa and I am pretty partial to hers, but Selma's was very good also, and a pleasant way to end this shopping day!

Yelp
Went to introduce my friend to kenefa. Not the best in the area, but still very good. Also had ice cream (which you can add to the kenafa), a good dessert selection, and great seating. The server was very kind. I recommend.
google avatar

samar s.

Yelp
Great food, desserts and service. Very friendly people. My new favorite place to eat.
google avatar

Omar A.

Yelp
One of the best kanafe I've ever had. I highly recommend it. I also loved their blueberry cheesecake gelato
google avatar

Muath D.

Yelp
We tried different knafeh places and this was the best. It is the closest to what is served back in Jordan. The only disadvantage is that like majority of middle eastern sweet places in the area the place offers very basic way to serve its food. But who cares if the food is delicious!

Nadia K.

Yelp
The people that work there are bias towards women...The men working served the men first before helping me even though I was there before them. I didn't get a Salam because I'm a female. Not the friendliest Very unislamic and disappointing. The month of Ramadan is suppose to be positive and make you a more humble person but they ruined my evening and shame on them.
google avatar

Koury K.

Yelp
Nothing special here. The worker is nice but the food is just okay. Do not expect much. Just okay.
google avatar

Samiya N.

Yelp
Not sure why Yelp says this place is always closed but it isn't. Took me a while to visit this place and see if it was actually closed or not and I'm glad I came here. It's very colorful and clean the staff is very kind. They've got prepared assortments for occasions if you're in a rush and ready to pick up. Or you can sit and enjoy your sweets with a cup of coffee. I came here twice around 10:00pm and tried four different sweets. Their Kunafa is quite delicious. Very pleased with everything. Don't forget to ask for extra nuts or syrup. Will definitely be coming back to sit down and enjoy my sweets since most places like this are take out.

K S.

Yelp
I was disappointed from this place and decided not comeback again. I order big order from konafa and it is really so good. Then I asked the girl to taste the baklawa, to decide if I wanna buy some or not. The girl who served me was upset by my asking but she gave very small piece. When I paid I told her take money for this price, she answer me I already did . I took 1$ !!!!!! . Aha . The baklawa taste is awful . She gain 1$ but she lost a customer. what a customer service is this.

Sue Z.

Yelp
Updating my review since now Selma's has Gelato. I always leave this place with a happy tummy. There was a wide choice of flavors. I had the butter pecan and pumpkin spice, but pretty much tasted all the flavors. All the flavors were rich and vibrant and well displayed. And of course the place is always clean and the staff helpful. 5 stars for Selma's
google avatar

Asil A.

Yelp
Best knafa I've had by far. The staff is friendly and it's very easy to order off the menu. They give you samples before ordering if you're having trouble deciding. You can even get it frozen and take it home to bake whenever you please.
google avatar

Yaz D.

Yelp
This place was recommended to us. It's the first time I don't finish a plate of knafeh in my life. I can't understate how bad it was. Save your time and money and go somewhere else.

Sam D.

Yelp
Service is very bad I really don't recommend this to anyone. You will have to wait hour an a half for the Knafa and every time u ask them how long they will tell u 10 minutes. Don't waste your time and money here
google avatar

Samir C.

Yelp
Idk what these bad reviews are about. I've literally had the best kunafa and the best customer service of my life.

E D.

Yelp
Good knafe, terrible service. Lost my business as well as everyone I know. Was a frequent customer, not anymore. Train your employees better please.
google avatar

Zarmeenah R.

Yelp
I've literally never met kinder people! The guy there let us try all the sweets and he threw in something extra just for us it was so so sweet! I couldn't believe how sweet they were, their kanefa is amazing and the people even better please come visit this place!
google avatar

Fred B.

Yelp
this place was supposed to be the best place for Kenafa and I have been coming here for almost a year driving little over an hour to come and eat kENAFA with my family and take away to family and friends, and was surprised this time to be treated like crap just because I requested to have the thing I want not what the seller want, the Spanish lady behind the counter was very rude to me and didn't care if I buy or not. when I told her if you dont give me what I want not what you want I will not buy. they have just lost a customer
google avatar

Hana A.

Yelp
Knafeh is best you will find! And the Warbat are soo yummy. Staff was very nice! I called in order, paid over phone and had family go pick it up! Thank you for being awesome!

Carolyn J.

Yelp
Staff is extremely rude and disrespectful. I went in recently and saw that they did not have face masks on which was unsettling. I'm disappointed, the food quality does not seem to be what it used to be.
google avatar

Hazem S.

Yelp
One of the best sweets shop I ever found. I would recommend trying a bit of everything and then buying what you like the most. Unfortunately, can't recommend one single item because that will be unfair for the rest of the items. Staff are very friendly. Sweets are always fresh. I can't pass by the area without stopping by.
google avatar

Shareef Y.

Yelp
I know we got lucky as the tray was fresh, but when it's fresh it's amazing! Kanafa was very flavorful and soft. Don't even have to chew it.
google avatar

Gaby C.

Yelp
I've had great experiences here. The knafeh tastes great and the lady who's running the front is super friendly and hilarious! Her hospitality and the quality of their sweets will have be coming back here for a long time.
google avatar

F. H.

Yelp
The sweets here are very tasty and have very great texture to it, the only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the female upfront had the nastiest attitude whoever the owner is please teach her how to be professional no matter what customer she deals with.
google avatar

Wael K.

Yelp
This is an excellent place for authentic middle eastern pastries and sweets nice lady Selma is kind
google avatar

Ola A.

Yelp
Don't even want to give this 1 star. I've been here before with no problems but I just went in again Sunday the 16th and the girl behind the counter was the rudest person I've ever met!!! She looked like she was disgusted with people walking in and didn't want to do anything. Didn't offer me syrup for the knafeh that I bought nor did she even cover the tray!!! I used to like this place but after this last experience I will NEVER go back and I will be spreading the word about how horrible and disgusting the service is!!
google avatar

Serene A.

Yelp
Can I give them 0 stars??? Absolute fucking nightmare. I ordered my sweets at 1... went to pick it up at 5:30 and it wasnt ready. Then she start giving the men BEHIND me the sweets that I ORDERED FOUR AND A HALF HOURS AGO. She literally looked at me and said "theres a line" AND I WAS THE FIRST ONE IN LINE. When I finally got my sweets after waiting twenty minutes they were cold and tasted bad. DO NOT GO HERE . THE WORST POSSIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE IN THE WORLD
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
I didnt know what in the world I was walking into when I went to Selma's. Turns out, its a Palestinian bakery! Being unfamiliar with the food I had no idea what to try so the girl behind the counter gave us some recommendations and let us sample a couple things. They were both very good, especially with warm honey. One funny observation I had was 95% of the customers were men. (???) Maybe its a cultural thing where the guys get to make the dessert run, IDK...

Sylvia G.

Yelp
I went in real early and they only had Fresh Kenafa and Gelto but it was Soooo delicious that I went home with that one desert!!! I'm definitely going back!!!

Alexandra F.

Yelp
They took forever to take our order. We waited at least 15 mins just for service while others were being taken care of less than a min. The young lady was rude and had attitude. Did not great us only stared us down as soon as we entered. We wanted their frozen treat and she ended breaking my cone. The Ferrero Rocher frozen treat did not even taste like it or had chunks of the chocolate. She proceeded to only stare at my boyfriend making it an uncomfortable visit. Will never come back for service.

Fatima I.

Yelp
I went in today for knafeh. The knafeh they gave me I wouldn't serve to my worst enemy I had to throw it away I went in to replace it they refused. if they take off the stars option for them it would be better. Rude service

Sharmeen A.

Yelp
Their warbat and knefah rolls were extremely delicious! I regret not buying more to last me a long time considering I drove more than an hour to this place(worth it though)! Their gelatos were also very creamy, but I had my heart set on the warbat. Smiling faces to greet you and very generous with their samples. May Allah give barakah in their lives, Ameen! Please always make your desserts.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
Very friendly service. Excellent coffee and interesting desserts. The pastry is light and crunchy. The cream filling goes nicely with the pastry. Good place to be adventuresome.

Georgina J.

Yelp
I'm usually pretty fair about posting reviews, and keep an open mind, but I personally would not recommend this place, for the following reasons. Very bad customer service, no friendly greeting, especially if your not middle Eastern. I placed my order over the phone , to avoid waiting and being exposed to a big crowd , especially during this pandemic. I was extremely annoyed when I went to pick up my sweets. The place was very crowded, no social distancing, staff touching all surfaces while handling food. I was even more upset that I had to stand there waiting and not even being acknowledged! Then a man comes from behind me, reaches over me to hand the worker money. I had to get their attention in order for them to acknowledge me. I was also getting worried , as i noticed that no one else, meaning customers or staff had face masks. The sweets are good , but way over priced ! And quite honestly, I've tasted better. If you don't mind the rude attitude, or the feeling of being at flea market, then this is your place!

White S.

Yelp
The lady gave me a very small piece if Kenafeh for $5 compared to the previous customer(almost half), when I asked why she said she was just nicer to her!! Then she gave the rest of the tray for the next customer which was around 5 times my portion for $15.
google avatar

Meme A.

Yelp
LOVE THIS FAMILY OWNED PLACE. You truly feel welcomed and the staff is just outstanding. They do a great job in explaining what is in the Arabian treats and what its made out of. The owner is very pleasant to deal with. My engagement sweets were bought from him and so are all my families dinner sweets. Never a down side with this place!!!!!
google avatar

Sam E.

Yelp
Not usually a fan of Arabian sweets, but their Chnaafa(yes with a ch) is just like my favorite place in Palestine. It's now a must at all family get togethers. Great customer service as well!

M O.

Yelp
I visited Selma's a couple of times before I decided to review it. Kunafa is great- and I rarely eat it! But what keeps me from going in regularly is the inconsistency in pricing and service. I noticed a couple of other reviews mentioning the same issue.

Maria A.

Yelp
Looking for delicious kanafeh, look no further. I've tried kanafeh at numerous bakeries in the Chicagoland area and this is one of my favorite places to go. Great staff with exceptional customer service. They gave recommendations and also offered samples of their harissa with nuts. I whould suggest they put less of their syrup, however the harissa was still delicious.
google avatar

Shady A.

Yelp
Best knafa in the nation hands down!!! not even Back home it's this good.very friendly staff. Let's hope it stays this way.
