The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week, December 2022 - Eater NY

"Selo, meaning “village,” is a newly opened Serbian and Croatian restaurant, which is a rare combination. The menu runs to stuffed schnitzels, pastas from the Istrian peninsula, Turkish-leaning salads, and pastries common to the former Yugoslavia. A cherished dish rarely rendered so well is cevapi, finger-shaped and skinless grilled sausages of pork and veal (five for $10.50). They are served with chopped onions, a round and puffy loaf of pita that’s made in-house and served warm, and the red-pepper paste called ajvar. But tender up another $2.50 and receive kaymak, a thick and buttery dairy product that has no equivalent among English speakers — except perhaps “clabbered milk.” Spread it on the pita with a couple of cevapi, and the flavor is marvelous." - Eater Staff

Selo is spectacular! It was our first time trying Croatian food and everything we had was delicious! We made an early reservation here on a whim - this area is so saturated with decent restaurants, but we really wanted to have something new and unique. First, the host is amazing. He’s so willing to help you understand the menu and choose dishes. We ordered a bottle of Croatian wine (red-Terrano) to start, and it was amazing. The appetizers we ordered on the host’s recommendation were also all on point: eggplant was so flavorful, the octopus was the most tender I’d ever had in almost wondering if it was sous vide or just really fresh. And the burek. THE BUREK. Order the burek! Crispy warm bread and cheese! For dinner we then ordered branzino (cooked and seasoned absolutely perfectly!) and the homemade pasta (unrivaled!) We were too full for any more dishes to try or dessert and let happy with full and satisfied bellies. And prices were actually reasonable, with is rare to find these days. Do not sleep on trying this place out for a meal. Especially if you want to try great, freshly prepared Croatian food! I will rarely give five stars to a restaurant. This one earned every one of them!

A lovely Croatian restaurant! The Istrian gnocchi was incredibly indulgent. Soft and chewy gnocchi bathed in luxurious cheese. The burek was so light and crispy, baked to a perfect golden brown with creamy cheese filling. The cevapi was meaty and flavorful. I couldn't get enough of them! The Zito cake was surprisingly good. Not overly sweet, nutty, and creamy. Really enjoyed its sticky, soft, and silky mouthfeel!

There are times when you are missing home, and then you find this place, where they serve Balkan food and they have wine form your country, and then everything comes to place. The food was delicious, the service was awesome and then there was live music that reminds you of your youth. We will definitely be visiting again, this was not only food for your belly, but also food for your soul.

Came for lunch. Had the veal lunch pasta which my hubby LOVED. I had the Istrian gnocchi which was homemade melty cheesy goodness. the Cheese stuffed red peppers were good and a little more expensive than i would have liked. Also had the Balkan mule with the pear brandy. Would love to return to have the mixed meat platter.

The service was excellent! The waitress did everything from making our drinks to getting our foods. She promptly attended to all of our needs. Thank you again.

The grilled octopus is a must. It did not tasted fishy. I could eat it all by myself. I drool looking at the pictures. The dish that didn't hit the spot was the pork. When my friend got it before, the cheese oozed out and was much more moist. This time felt overcooked. Overall a nice local restaurant serving up some tasty dishes. Appreciated the house wine and hospitality. Server was helpful but service on the slower side. two gendered restrooms.

Let me tell you about my most favorite meal in nyc in a long while. I originally noticed this place by running past it on a warm summer day. The food atop each table looked mouthwatering and I knew I had to try it. After meeting someone From Serbia, and then realizing Selo is Serbian/croation/Mediterranean food, I know it was fate. We visited Selo on 11/14. There were two other tables sitting when we came around 5:45pm. The lighting dim, with Romanian/Serbian inspired decor in deep yellow/orange color. Our server was from Montenegro, just to the left of Belgrade. Absolutely amazing service from the second we walked in. We ordered a Serbian beer and I a hot water as I always do. For appetizers, we tried the charcuterie, bruschetta, and the octopus. The meat and cheeses BLEW ME AWAY. I still look forward to tasting this dish again. It was incredible, all imported and full of character in each bite. I don't eat octopus but my sister really enjoyed the octopus. The bruschetta was pretty straight forward and delicious. very fresh. We had the traditional Serbian cucumber and tomatoe salad paired with soup for one entree. I got the nocchi, and we also tried the stuffed pepper in mashed potato's. Every plate was different and just as delicious as the next. They all tastes home made/made with love. It seemed like a family business. The owner mentioned every Saturday is Serbian night and we should come as many Montenegros also join that evening for traditional music and dancing. The absolutely beautiful desert consisted of euro cream (you can get Nutella also) crepes and jam crepes. We originally got them to go for our mom, but had to try them, and could not stop eating them. SOOOO GOOOD. Crepes or "pancakes" in Serbian culture are huge, when I tell you they go crazy over them.... And I see why. All in all I really look forward to coming back to Selo. You should absolutely stop by for an incredible meal.

I wanted to visit this restaurant for a long time since I've never had a Crotian food before. Tonight I had the chance to finally have a dinner here. We ordered burek as an appetizer and stuffed pepper, karadjordjeva with veal as main dishes. I liked the service, but we were the only customers in the entire resturant around 6pm, which felt little weird. I might be mistaken, but the burek felt like a frozen food rather than homemade. My friend found the veal very stiff and could not finish her plate. I personally really liked the stuff pepper. Thus, I decided to give 4 stars as my final evaluation.

Yelp
Loved everything about this spot! Including the fact that it's dog-friendly. Super warm and welcoming. The epitome of mom and pop shop. The wife is the chef and the husband (Mirko) is taking care of customer orders up front. We got the sampler for two and the grilled octopus. So much food but also so tasty! The Fusi pasta with veal is a MUST. The pasta is handmade by a famous Italian chef and the sauce is just right. The Monastery Peppers surprised me how good they tasted. The Shopska was salad is so refreshing with cucumbers and tomatoes and onions. The cevapi sausages were my favorite part of the mixed meats. The octopus is also lightly fried to perfection on a bed of arugula salad.

Yelp
I had a wonderful time here at Selo. The food is just really priced well and was cooked and made to perfection. The service is very respectful, attentive, professional, and diligent. The ambiance is very elegant and unique in a way that I personally love. This place gave me an experience to remember by. I will definitely come back. 5 stars.

Yelp
Looking for a very hearty meal - this is the spot for you . You have to start with the Burek. I mean , flaky phyllo dough filled with cheese , it is a must . It is enough for 2-3 , it is precut in 4 pieces served with a nice yogurt dip. For my main course I had the Gurmanska. It is ground meat (pork and beef) filled with cheese, bacon and onion and on the side potatoes sort of like hash brown pieces . The meal so filling and satisfying. The waitress was incredibly helpful and explained the dishes . She even gave a little history lesson about the origin. There is a nice selection of deer as well, which always compliments a meat dish.

Yelp
Lovely spot with unique menu items. Wonderful family-like service. One of the best burek in Astoria so far, baked fresh upon ordering. Istrian gnocchi were very creamy and saucey. Monastery peppers were distinct and delightful. The projice (Savory Corn Muffins) were a miss, very dry and dense, even with kajmak.

Great vibe, delicious Balkan food, friendly staff, awesome service, Serbian music and awesome experience!

Yelp
First time trying Croatian food; cuisine is different from what I'm used to but overall I enjoyed everything. Thought the urnebes went well with the pita, which was warm and fluffy. The gnocchi was very, very rich and I couldn't eat more than a few bites but the flavor was good and the cheese really soft and melty (great cheese pull!). The gurmanska was tasty as well. Portions are pretty sizable, you're definitely not leaving hungry.

Yelp
Nice clean spot with excellent food. Quick attentive service with cevapi and burek like in the Balkans. It is a bit pricey for what it is but it's not like this is available in every corner of the city. Love the vibe inside, comfy and familial. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Ken W.

Yelp
The sampler for two was quite substantial in size. The pork kebab and cevapi were juicy and prepped well; the Karadordjeva breading was light and the stuffing gooey, which helped with the somewhat dry meat. The zito dessert was light and not overly sweet.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food, highly recommend the mixed grilled meat platter for two. Everything cooked to perfection!

Yelp
5 stars across the board for Selo!! I already know I will be back! Came here on a date and it was perfect! We ordered the sampler for two as advised by the owner Elvis who came around personally to meet everyone and then to ensure everything was going smoothly. I really appreciated the attention and he asked for feedback which further proved they care a lot about customer service! Service stood out to me because everyone was very nice and attentive and I feel that it's hard to find a restaurant who genuinely cares about people enjoying their time. The food was delicious. I'm glad we went with his recommendation because we got to try everything and the portions were perfect for two people- we even took some home! It's also pretty romantic place and has live music which is lovely to enjoy while at dinner. The meal comes with a free wine bottle but he told us we could substitute for anything else we would like such as different drinks or dessert. I would definitely come back multiple times and bring friends! He said it's a family business and everything is freshly made in the back which you could tell because it was magnificent!

Yelp
First time trying Croatian/Balkan/Serbian food! It was a good introduction and made me curious to try more of these cuisines, though the meal itself was average. Started with the cevapi (Balkan sausages), which was good. The bread had great texture and the combination worked well. My entree was the homemade istrian gnocchi, essentially gnocchi with shrimp in cream sauce and lots of cheese. I wasn't sure how this was different from regular pasta but this was enjoyable and hearty. I wish there had been more shrimp. I was looking forward to (and saved room for) cream puffs for dessert, but unfortunately they were disappointing. While they looked good, the pastry was completely soggy, not airy or crispy as they are supposed to be. They were clearly old and I would not serve these in a restaurant.
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
I literally never write reviews, but this place was soooo freaking good! Got the grilled octopus - texture was melt in your mouth--was not expecting it to be so tender! Then got the gnocchi as the main course. My goodness, the richness of the sauce & the cheese pull!! The server was super friendly & attentive. Seriously a great all around experience here.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Wow, truly an amazing experience!! We ordered the gnocchi and grilled octopus... both 10/10. The service was also incredible. I will definitely be coming here again!!

Yelp
I never had Croatian or Serbian food but I always wanted to try it. It is a personal mission of mine to try all the different cuisines from around the world. To start, we had the Urnebes Salad, not a salad at all but a spicy red pepper spread that tasted divine when paired with the rustic bread they bring to the table upon being seated. I then had the fish special, which was tender, flaky, and perfectly seasoned. We enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, and the service. Service was prompt and friendly, and we left completely stuffed. We had a really lovely evening at Selo and cannot stop raving about it to our friends and family in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Selo is an amazing ballon restaurant located in bustling Broadway! This is my second time coming here and it does not disappoint. Great ambience, good food, and good service! Food: the monastery peppers are a must when you come here! The portion size is very small but one of my favorite things on the menu. The burek is also delicious but a bit too oily. The salad was very refreshing and much needed after the heaviness of some of the food. I ordered the chicken with mlinci and it was very flavorful but it had way too much oil, and that made it feel very greasy. The gnocchi is really good and you can get a vegetarian option, if you don't eat shrimp. For dessert, we tried the cream puffs which were decadent! I'd recommend 3-4 people share 1 portion! The one thing is that some of there menu items were not available, which was a bit disappointing Ambience: I love the ambience of this place. It has a very romantic feel and after 7:30 pm it starts filling up with people. In the summer, there is also outdoor seating Price: reasonably priced Service: good service overall

Yelp
Great spot, delicious food and reasonably priced. I had the Greek salad which was fresh and light. Just the right amount of feta. We also had stuffed yellow pepper with mashed potatoes underneath. Flavors were very good, not overwhelming. Service was outstanding. Casual, clean place. We had w late lunch and I'd recommend if you're in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Kenneth E.

Yelp
Came here with some friends for dinner. The place was pretty empty, but the service was super friendly and nice. We ended up getting a few dishes to share. We stared with the burek which was very good! We got the cevapi which was the shining star of the dinner. It was so delicious and flavorful. Personally, I would not add the kajmak, that just tasted like butter, and there were other better tasting sauces that came with it standard. Finally, we got the veal schnitzel, which was good, but not great. I feel like this was probably the worst thing we got. the center had a slice of ham in it and cheese and oil so it was kind of like a veal cordon bleu but I feel like it was mostly hollow which was deceiving. Overall, a pretty good place! The service was friendly and I'd suggest sticking with the cevapi!
google avatar

Shiwen T.

Yelp
This is probably going to be the best burek I'll ever have, and it is made by the owner's wife. If one is in the neighborhood, Selo is totally worth checking out!
google avatar

A A.

Yelp
I'd 1000% come back for a monthly Gnocchi here. I'd like to try pork schnitzel and burek next time. Food 5 I'm always on a quest for good gnocchi. Came for a quick lunch. Ordered ahead. Home made. Soft and tender. Cheesy. Lots of shrimps. One of my favorite gnocchi in the city. It's an Eastern European restaurant. Sauce is unique. It creamy orange cheesy. Almost looks and taste like vodka sauce w a lot of cheese mixed in. Deco 4 typical Astoria restaurant vibe. It looks like it could be any type of restaurant, diner, Chinese, Italian... A bit dated clean w semi worn out wooden furnitures. Good place for everyday dining out when you don't want to cook. Playing foreign pop music. It was mid afternoon. Was not crowded. Service 5 friendly staff.

Yelp
Solid spot. We saw the cevapi featured on Eater and had to come try it for ourselves and were not disappointed. Selo is pretty new as of this writing. The restaurant is right in the middle of Broadway and in an area that's filled with other great restaurants and bars. We came pretty early, 6pm for a group of 10 and the restaurant was pretty empty. It's good for large groups and also intimate dinners. Food is really good - cevapi was the highlight and highly recommended. The burek was great and a super large serving size. Personally, I would pass on the pork schnitzel type dish the next time and just get more cevapi. Drinks are decently priced - $7/8 for beer and a glass of wine. We got a bottle of whatever house wine they had and that was only $25. Highly recommend getting a bottle if you're looking to order drinks
google avatar

Yelp
Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures before I devoured the food. We got the sampler for 2 and couldn't get enough. I've been back multiple times since. Service and ambiance were also delightful. Would highly recommend to everyone!!!

Yelp
Wow! What a fantastic surprise! After spending a few hours in Astoria Park and the pool, we were starving and picked Selo for a late lunch totally by chance. We didn't know what to expect, and we were totally blown away by this place. I've had food from Eastern Europe before, and I've been to a few of the former Yugoslavia countries, but I don't think I've ever had Serbian food specifically. What I can say is that the food at Selo is incredibly flavorful, rich, and really really good. Our meal started with savory ustipci, which are fried dough balls served with cured beef, Serbian bacon and kajmak[1]. That was followed with the best grilled octopus I've had in a very long time: tender and wonderfully charred on the outside, perfectly cooked, and super-flavorful. We then had the homemade Istrian gnocchi with shrimp[2]. I was a bit skeptical at first of having shrimp in a creamy sauce, but this dish was fantastic. Just like fantastic was the karadjorjeva: A rolled and fried pork schnitzel stuffed with kajmak and served with baked potato and tartar sauce. When this dish arrived on the table we bursted laughing because of the sheer size of this thing[3]. The dish was no joke, though, packing some real flavor. We ended our meal with the "zito torta", which is an old fashioned Serbian cake made with walnuts and served with vanilla cream. After such a rich meal desert could -and perhaps should- have been avoided, but I'm glad we got the zito torta, as this cake was delicious and wonderfully airy. Service was impeccable and the servers were friendly. Finally, Selo is beautiful inside and manages to look classy and feel welcoming at the same time. I would definitely love to come here for dinner. ------- [1] Kajmak is a creamy dairy food similar to clotted cream. [2] If you get this dish, let it cool on the table for a good 10 minutes because it is scorchingly hot. [3] This is definitely good enough for 2 people.

Yelp
Food (5/5): Food here is amazing!!! Haven't had much of this European food before but loved every dish. It was a great start when the dressing on the bread was flavorful and the calamari tasted super fresh and the right amount of crispy. Then from everything to the gnocchi, veal pasta, snitchzel, meat, and chicken wrapped in sausage was well flavored, cooked to perfection, and flavored effectively. Definitely one of my favorite spots now. Venue (5/5): The restaurant is open to the outdoors but you have to walk in a certain area to the host who will then seat you. It has a nice space, tables and area were clean, and overall sophisticatedly decorated. Service (4/5): Friendly, helpful service. Food came out a bit slow but ended up being worth it. They could check up on us more often and refill waters. Additionally, it took a while for the check to come out when we asked.
google avatar

Austin K.

Yelp
Tip: there's a yelp check-in for 15% off but I only realized this after coming. Came back here a 2nd time, and was explained that the menu is part Serbian and part Croatian (pasta and seafood dishes). I got the pork schnitzel this time - karadjordjeva. There's apparently a veal version of this that's more expensive that I saw on the website. It was an interesting dish - circular and rolled up pork in a creamy sauce. I liked it but the sauce was very watery and spilled out as soon as I cut into it. The accompanied potatoes and slaw were standard, but good. Burek: friend got this, and I ate a little piece - it was good, maybe the best I ever had. It was the most crispy and airy that I ever had, and the feta cheese filling was nice but I would have preferred spinach or other fillings in addition to the cheese. It was a little too much along with the kajmak (cow's cheese) 'dip'. Walnuts cake: this was better than I expected - a little more nuanced flavor than simply cinnamon and walnuts, although not a must-try.

Yelp
I have been to this restaurant several times. Most recently on my birthday in July 2023. It was a party of 7. We were greeted with open arms and the staff really made us feel welcome. The food is delicious and portion sizes were perfect with plenty of leftovers to enjoy for a snack later. Prices are great. We will definitely be back again. (Apologies on the photos not being perfect. It was only an iPhone 8 at the time haha) The music was really nice and we even had room to dance a little!
google avatar

Eon C.

Yelp
We've never had eastern euro food before so we were a little nervous but the food was top notch. We also got calamari on top of the Cevapi, Gnocchi, and Gurmanska. Everything was great, I think my fav was the gnocchi (so creamy) and the cevapi. The onions with the cheese and the peppers went well with the pita bread! Service was good and the ambiance is relaxed and great for a nice dinner date!

Yelp
The food was AMAZING and so was the service! I don't usually leave reviews but this place definitely deserves it. Would go back anytime

Yelp
The cuisine of the Balkans seems to be having a moment in New York, and is no longer constrained to casual börek shops in converted pizzerias. And there are few finer ways to pass an Astoria sunset than seated outside at Selo. We started with the monastery peppers, which were actually our highlight of the evening. The rich white cheese stuffing paired perfectly with the crispy texture of the fried pepper exterior. For main dishes we shared the börek, which had a lovely soft interior filo dough texture (although the outside was a bit too crispy for my liking) and the Istrian gnocchi. The gnocchi was both incredibly decadent and a lesson in the geography of the Balkans, with a clear influence from Italy to the west, yet layered with the taste of cheeses that are clearly Eastern European.
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
It's been a long time since I've walked into a restaurant, immediately...genuinely greeted and seated. Amazing. The inside is full of unique/beautiful decor from the moment you walk in. I ordered the monastery peppers as an appetizer. Delicious. Entree: Homemade Istrian Gnocci. (Homemade potato dumplings w/shrimp and cheese )YOU MUST. MUST order this. Eat it slow. Savor it. Perfection. I paired it w/a house cabernet (staffs choice) superb. And then for desert at the staffs recommendation we had the Princes Krofne. (delicious little cream filled puffs) Not too sweet, just right and light w/a cappuccino.

Ljubica C.

Yelp
The food is really good and the service is very friendly, but on the slower side, though it would count as fast compared to what you might expect in Europe. If you have a background from the Balkans, you can expect to be asked if you speak the language, which can be uncomfortable when you don't speak it. It happened to my child and it wasn't fun.
google avatar

Thomas J.

Yelp
Went here for the first time with a couple of people that have never had food from the Balkans. Owner is great, helpful, and enthusiastic about the cuisine. Loved the octopus and stuffed squid.Intetesting beers from Bosnia, Serbia, and Croatia. Will definitely go back.
google avatar

Dave K.

Yelp
If you've been to Croatia, then you've enjoyed its beautiful architecture, beaches/waters, and wonderful cuisine ('mainly fresh seafood). The cuisine at Selo reminds me of the type of food you'd find in Hvar. While the menu is somewhat limited, they make up with flavors and good service . Server was knowledgeable, attentive and enthusiastic about making recommendations. We enjoyed a great seafood pasta (tied a main course as an appetizer), Squid stuffed with Squid (yeah, the double whammy), Bronzino fillet and whole Bronzino. One word - "delicious"!
google avatar

Sophia Z.

Yelp
This place is really affordable and delicious. Highly recommend the gnocchi and sausage dish. They are both highly recommended and rated by the waitress and they did not disappoint. I was very full on the dishes, and paid less than $40 total for two people. The restaurant feels a bit European and upscale.
google avatar

Toyin D.

Yelp
I'm not even sure how I found this spot but I'm glad I did and I will 100% be frequenting this place. The bf and I were impressed with how kind the staff was here and how good the food was. Now, full disclosure, I'm no Croatian cuisine expert and this was kind of my first time, but everything we had was super flavorful. We got the karadjordjeva (fried schitnzel) and the Gurmanska (ground meat). The gurmanksa was definitely the star of the show - phenomenally seasoned and tender. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu.
google avatar

Frank M.

Yelp
Don't have much to say -- good food good time, good service, unique ambiance and unique selection of Croatian beers. The burger is a new take -- doesn't need a bun to be good. However the chicken (middle pic) didn't seem the best item on the menu.

Yelp
I came here with my family to celebrate my Mom's birthday. My Mom wanted to try something new and we are so happy we came to Selo's Restaurant. The waiter was so friendly and so nice and everything he recommended was delicious! We tried several dishes and each was unique.

Yelp
Wow. Giving 5 stars doesn't come so easily for me. I'm pretty critical. I happened to be across the street from here and noticed that this place has 5 stars and over 60 reviews at this time. That's really saying something. So I had to come in. Because of the photos, I ordered Octopus appetizer and Gnocchi as a main. They were both delicious. It's not fast food... takes a bit even for the octopus to come out, but it was so soft and nicely done, served with a salad with a great dressing. The wife got the stuffed pepper dish, which I thought was good, though she loved it. The gnocchi is so cheesy. Loved it. Service was on the money... nice atmosphere. Would definitely return. They have a small menu, but they make up for quantity with quality.

My boyfriend and I had a great time at Selo! We got the burek (cheese pastry), cevapi (sausage plate), stuffed calamari, istrian fuzi pasta with veal, and two bottles of white wine. Everything was delicious, and the owner and staff went above and beyond to make it a memorable night. The wine was great and very well priced for NYC at under $40/bottle. We can't wait to return, hopefully when they do their next wine tasting night!

Yelp
10 stars ! Very delicious food and big portions. One of my friends did her daughters birthday party here and it was the best food experience that l ever had at a birthday party. Definitely will recommend this place especially if you love eating cheese!

Yelp
First time having Croatian cuisine and wow! Every was so delicious. Our waitress was super sweet and amazing , she helped us pick out our dishes and we throughly enjoyed it all . Please order yourself the bruschetta!!! It's probably the best bruschetta I've ever had . Their fish soup was full of flavor & to end off the meal I had a delicious cappuccino!!

Yelp
Had a really great experience here today. Excellent food and service. Everything we had is worth recommending: the proja appetizer, the salmon special, the spinach ravioli, the žito cake, and the (to go) burek which did not make it very far. Lovely ambiance and not crowded on an a Sunday early afternoon.

Yelp
This spot just opened up on Broadway and I am so glad it did! This is a family owned, family run business that has a great menu and very chill vibes. The waitstaff is super helpful and friendly, too! We ordered the urnebes as an appetizer, which is like a roasted red pepper and feta cheese dip. It was delicious and it came with baked bread which was fresh out of the oven and therefore scrumptious. For mains, we got a pork schnitzel and a shrimp gnocchi. The schnitzel was good, but the shrimp gnocchi was the star of the whole meal. The perfect combo of melted cheese and firm shrimp with soft dumplings. I will definitely be back for that. For dessert we ordered a traditional cake (zito torta I think?) with walnuts and it was very different from other desserts I've had, not too sweet, and you can really taste the walnuts. They have live music on Fridays/Saturdays so bring your friends and family for a hearty meal!
