Classic Downtown counter spot with a surprisingly deep menu and dependable late hours. Loved by neighborhood regulars for dumplings, sesame noodles, and reliably crisp crab rangoon.

Google
Worst SERVICE EVER! How does it take a restaurant literally an hour and a half to deliver 1 tiny meal .08 miles away???? Yes, it is raining. And? You should be equipped for that. I've ordered from them before and it has steadily gotten horrible on the service. They always say 30-40min, ok no problem. But it keeps getting longer and longer. What's the deal with ordering if we have to wait so long? When you call to ask about the order, the one lady that always answered says repeatedly food is on the way but then she asks my apt and what's my order. Sounds like she is a big part of the problem. I told her I won't pay full price if I have to wait an hour and a half when it should be here in half an hour and she offeres a 20% discount for next order. Honey, no worried bcz I won't be ordering from your restaurant ever again! Ordered at 4:23pm, finally eating at 6:10pm. Not a big deal to some, but when you're disabled and on meds, it is a huge deal. Oh yeah, and the food was of course cold! WORST SERVICE EVER!!!

Google
Everything abt SenHai is a 10*** star, it's family owned, the portions are great, service, pick up or delivery never errors, the food tastes fantastic. And last; the prices are good for what they offer on menu. I order from Amy, she is so quick but always precise, never any errors with my order. I have been ordering from sen hai easily over 15 years now that is a good no errors record right? Try it. You'll like it!

Google
My girlfriend and I’s favorite Chinese take our spot! Generous portions and reasonable price. All my friends love it here too!

Fried veggie dumplings were great! The fried rice and mapo tofu could be spicier. Huge portion sizes!

Google
Ordered Chicken chow mein (Although had couple of nice Chinese rest around, thought to give this one a shot). In the menu there was no description of the ingredients for many items including Chow-mein, so I expected would be typical Chow-mein recipe fried noodles wth vegetables and chicken. What I got was a box full of watery, slushy vegetables basically chopped lettuce, onions and carrots with chicken. Never had this sort of Chow-mein recipe before in my entire life. On calling and asking the business that why there are no noodles in the Chow-mein, they said Lo-mein is the noodles , Chow-mein is only vegetables with chicken. In a nutshell dinner spoiled on a hungry day. Guy at the other end tried to shoot a lie that he called me twice to tell me that it's all vegetables but I didn't pick up, C'mon dude you playing these country tricks on people in Jersey city, I didn't receive any call whatsoever during that period except the call from the delivery guy. The guy didn't have an iota of regret and guilt and quickly hung up ensuring that discussion don't go further to a refund. Guys if thats your version of Chow-mein, at least put some effort in writing down the description and ingredients in menu so that no one orders this watery vegetables with chicken by mistake and feel cheated. Worst Chinese food experience in long time. Google search Chicken chow-mein recipe and then compare it to the pics attached. My first and last order here And don't go by their Seamless and Grubhub ratings, just go through the actual reviews, Ratings look pretty much fake and opposite to the reviews. Hope these pics will help anyone ordering Chow-mein from here. Thank me later.

Google
The food here is always fresh. Very Delicious! Perfect portion of food. They Never take long preparing it once they take my order. Everyone is kind. Prices are reasonable & Most of all out of most Chinese restaurants they still give you a free crunchy egg roll with your order after spending over $20 is & will always be a classic like back in the days. I highly recommend Sen Hai Chinese Restaurant to everyone who wants Satisfaction of enjoying Chinese cuisine & Want their money worth.

Google
Excellent! Enough so, that I am leaving a review. Chinese food in the USA is awful. Sorry! But it is. I keep trying, to no avail. But not here… The food was really surprisingly good. I’ve eaten great Chinese food in China in Hong Kong, in England (believe it or not) and in Chinatown in Queens, NY. Everywhere else disappoints. Finding this restaurant has made my day, my week! I will be ordering again. Oh - and nice generous portions. Thank you!

Yelp
Good nuff Chinese takeout. Hits the spot when u need that gen tsos lunch special. Fried rice is ok..

Shane E.

Yelp
I ordered here for the first time based on some reviews I had read. However, my special order instructions were ignored and I was not able to eat the food i ordered. I tried to reach out to them through Uber Eats, and was never able to talk to them. WARNING: If you decide to order from here make sure you don't don't have special orders, I would steer clear of here.

Yelp
Best Chinese we've had in a while !! This place def deserves a higher rating. Would highly recommend.

Sue F.

Yelp
Easily the most unappetizing Chinese takeout I have ever had. crazy high sodium levels. old roast pork. overcooked noodles. lukewarm rice. I tasted and was concerned about food poisoning. had Seamless recall, tossed it and do not recommend. but delivery was fast.

Yelp
I didn't end up ordering anything here because all I wanted was cold sesame noodles and they have a $10 card minimum for takeout, but I am so glad I didn't. It seems that most people order delivery here, but I advise you to go in and actually see the state of this place where they're cooking the food. It's absolutely horrendous. I walked in and immediately noticed a guy on the left laying down on the chairs with his feet up, sleeping. At the counter, another guy was talking with the hostess which I could hear even before I entered the place. There was a cough in the kitchen and none of the staff here wear masks anymore so it made me really uncomfortable. The place itself needs a serious cleaning up and wipe down. I would not order from here for hygiene reasons.
google avatar

Yelp
I have no idea why this place has such poor reviews. For a take out joint it's excellent, and food was delivered sooner than the delivery window said it would be. I had the steamed pork dumplings, cold sesame noodles, and the vegetarian general Tso's chicken. Portions are large and delicious. Usually vegetarian chicken is made from tofu, I think they use seitan which is even better. Hello to my new Chinese spot!
google avatar

Victoria P.

Yelp
Please give this place a try. It's absolutely worth it! Check out my old review. The bad reviews seem to be about delivery issues. Wellll...since there has been such a huge influx of new people moving into Jersey City traffic is way worse than it used to be and so are the increase in orders. I'm guessing Sen Hai is having issues keeping up with the influx? You can still order take out and pick up the order. This place has been around for YEARS. Prior to the gentrification of Jersey City and I'm proud it's still standing. Give it a shot, but I guess go pick it up yourself haha

Yelp
Hole in the wall Chinese take out. Very good Chinese food. The boneless ribs are great.

Yelp
When staying in Hoboken I always order from this restaurant. I love shrimp egg foo yong always good. They know how to make it. Pork fried rice is good. Great flavor. Sautéed broccoli always good. Great taste. Always lots of food at a great price and taste good most importantly. I've ordered from here over four times so far and I'm always satisfied with the food. I'll order again.

Yelp
So, I actually ordered via Uber eats. Rated 4.8 on there, I was shocked at the low rating on here (yelp). The food was great! I haven't had Chinese in a long time and I was really impressed with this place. Food was hot when it got to me, tasted fresh, and there was a great amount. Enough food to last me two days. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken, donuts, egg wrap, and cheese wontons. All very good, no stomach aches after eating it, all good! Great value of food, good taste, what more do you want? Haha. Oh! Also, they staple the bags closed and boxes which I really liked! Made me feel secure about what I ordered and no one tampered with it. Reviews are always based on the food, not the service for takeout. Takeout providers are different based on where you order from.

Iris S.

Yelp
Food is great comes warm ready to eat. Amy is great never makes mistakes with orders always sends condiments just great experience! You can't go wrong, food is delicious!!! Orange ChickenPork Fried RiceShrimp Egg Foo Young

Yelp
There are a ton of sub par chinese restaurants in this area but this is not one of them. Have finally found a go to spot for well made Chinese take- out.

Yelp
This family run restaurant has large portions with good value. I always get quality food quickly and one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Jersey City

Yelp
Sometimes it's great Sometimes it's disgusting Sometimes it takes 3 hours Sometimes 30 minutes Sometimes the lady on the phone is nice Sometimes she is a raging lunatic I don't know what's up with this place The last time- Two days ago...15 hours of the worst 'bathroom' I've ever experienced I'd say I'm done with here

Yelp
Being from the East Coast I miss the traditional Chinese food I love. Being in NJ on business, I found this locally owned restaurant for some of my favorites - Shrimp Egg Foo Young, egg rolls, steamed shrimp dumplings, and pork fried rice. The food was very tasty and plentiful, enough for two meals. I had to eat it in my hotel room which wasn't bad cuz I ate the egg roll standing unpacking it from the bag! When I head back to Jersey City, I'll definitely head back there again.

Yelp
Amazing hole in the wall in JC for takeout. Huge quantities and very flavorful and fresh dishes.
google avatar

Sanchita O.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from this place and the food is basically inedible. The rice is sticky and clumpy and the chicken isn't cooked well. The cheese wontons were alright because of the filling, the fried bit was too thick and not crispy at all. Terrible Chinese food experience! I wish I could get my money back for this order because it's easily the worst Chinese food I've eaten.
google avatar

Ijeoma E.

Yelp
I used to order from this place at least once a week until I found this stable baked into my food and they refused to give me a refund. Do not eat here if you don't want to choke on foreign objects!!!!
google avatar

Pamela C.

Yelp
Terrible! Ordered on Grubhub .. an hour and 15 minutes after I reached out to Grubhub. They stated the restaurant said ETA was ten minutes. Another 20 minutes passed... no food. They then called me numerous times about two hours after, not sure for what I didn't answer. By the second time I reached out to Grubhub I had cancelled the order and ordered from much better Hunan House- which was much farther from me but the food is always tasty and delicious and delivered in a reasonable amount of time. Save yourself a headache and order elsewhere. Over two hours for fried rice with chicken wings is NOT IT!

Matthew G.

Yelp
I love this place it's been my go to for years. Only reason I did 4 stars instead of 5 is that it sometimes feels like they send food out a little rushed and it can lead to small quality issues. Also, and this didn't effect my rating, I miss their old dumpling recipe. The new ones are WAY inferior.
google avatar

Kate C.

Yelp
This is our new go to spot, and we've tried all of the local Chinese food. Food is excellent and price is great.

Arianna M.

Yelp
Very dependable local Chinese take out! Unsure why the reviews are so low. Greta value for the price!

Chelsea C.

Yelp
Okay so just like you I was terrified when I read the reviews. I just moved in right nearby and wanted to try it but heeded everyone's warning. Then I randomly checked google reviews and someone said "BAD REVIEWS ARE CAUSE OF DELIVERY TIMES"... so I gave it a carry out try. Long story short: If you're getting delivery I can't help you- I do carry out. But imo it's the best quick Chinese place in JC. Everything I've tried has tasted great and isn't drowning in oil or goop. Staff is nice and quick. If you can stop by anD pick it up give them another try :-)

Yelp
I recently moved a block away from Sen Hai and wanted a quick and cheap lunch. I'd be hesitant to call this the worst takeout Chinese I've ever had, but it was lousy (though thankfully not nauseating). I went with the orange chicken lunch special with veggie fried rice and wonton soup. The restaurant itself is dirty and incredibly cramped, having only two tables and not enough room to handle three waiting customers. The wonton soup actually wasn't bad. The wontons were too firm but the broth had a nice, gingery hint. The fried rice was mediocre, but not totally lacking in veggies. The chicken was horrible: fatty meat, thick batter, and a mostly tasteless sauce with a few pieces of orange peel. If I'm ever looking for takeout Chinese again, I'll walk the few blocks to Future.
google avatar

Maria A.

Yelp
Firstly the food is terrible here. Don't order from this restaurant unless it's late and you're desperate...then the vegetarian Singapore noodles can be consumed safely. Next, Sen Hai if you're reading this...STOP WITH THE MENUS!!! They're so frustrating that even IF some unsuspecting soul was interested in eating here, the annoyance from daily solicitation via menus left at our doors completely dissuades potential dinners! I'm not really even sure what else to say other than avoid this greasy, flavorless rendition of Chinese food. Maybe I'm just jaded by the amazing Chinese takeout places in New York....

NafNaf B.

Yelp
Been ordering for delivery from here for years. Food is very flavorful w/o being greasy. Standards like chicken & broccoli, moo goo gai pan, egg foo young & the lo meins are very good. But the house special mei fun definitely stands out. The vegetable soup is clear w/fresh veggies & is not oily at all. Delivery has been prompt. But be prepared to repeat your phone order a couple of times since they can be difficult to understand at times. As to those who gave this place 1 star NOT because of the quality of their food or their service (indeed, they didn't even try this place out), but because of menus left at their door - ARE YOU F--SERIOUS???????

Sabrina J.

Yelp
We ordered dumplings and one them came with plastic inside. DON'T ORDER FROM HERE!!! Disgusting. (Posting image of the plastic dumpling-check it out)
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
I thought it was pretty solid. I got beef lo mein and cantonese chicken. The lo mein while greasy was very tasty and could def feed a family of 5. The chicken dish was not on the menu and they actually made it to order for me. Its basically a fried chicken cutlet on top of bok choy & broccoli in brown sauce. Believe me, when you are in the mood, this dish is dyno-mite. Egg rolls where eh, but what egg rolls are really that great? And that's all I got to say about that. Sen Hai - In!

William J.

Yelp
I hesitantly decided to try this place after passing by. They keep littering my building with menus - the delivery guys leave the pieces of paper in random places. Very annoying, but I decided to give this place a try. The food was simply terrible. General Tso chicken dish was cold, portion wasn't that big, and it wasn't cheap either for what I got. I had a very upset stomach for all day after eating here. You should definitely eat here if you want to clean your intestines! This place should start focusing more on the food, rather than on throwing their menu everywhere in buildings they deliver to.

Yelp
I definitely was a little reluctant to order from here because of the Yelp reviews, however, I took a shot to try and support them, and plus, i really wanted a change from my usual Old Peking. However, I am definitely a fan. Don't let the location or surrounding fool you. The taste was definitely there for everything that we ordered. The flavors were there and everything seemed fresh and this was on a Saturday night. I have to you know, even 2 days later (it was a lot of food) the rice was still soft and fresh out of the FRIDGE! It definitely WAS NOT stiff like rice from other chinese spots. I have to applaud them for that! 4 stars and not 5 because unlike other chinese spots, there do not offer "coupons". For instance, even after spending a hefty amount of money (About $50.00), we were not offered the typical free soda, free chicken wings, or any other free item for that matter - not something I was pleased about. I didn't really interact much with the staff as I placed the order online through delivery.com so I can't comment about that. Parking is definitely a struggle because of the location so definitely bring a friend and have them wait in the car just in case you have to park illegally. But all in all, I think the quality of the food was GREAT and I really felt like they offered a lot more of a variety at a fair price compare to other spots - i.e. sweet and sour SHRIMP, Szechuan SHRIMP, SHRIMP IN LOBSTER SAUCE w. PORK FRIED RICE AS A DINNER COMBO, SEAFOOD dumplings & CHICKEN dumplings (I capitalized most of these items because its very rare to find these specific items). P.S. Sorry but I was too hungry to take pictures. Will definitely post some the next time around - Happy Feasting

Yelp
Good, reliable take out. I was impressed with the quality of the chicken, shrimp and veggies in the dishes I tried. Nothing was greasy or over sauced. I will order again. Don't let the complaints about delivery stop you from trying them. The food's very good with generous portions.

Jenna M.

Yelp
Delivery is absolutely ridiculous. It took over an hour and a half to get here when I was told it would take 45-55 minutes. When I called to ask where my food was, I was asked numerous times what my address was. I could not get an answer if they even had my order, they just told me it would be here in 2 minutes. When I called back 20 minutes later, they told me the driver went to the wrong address. Eventually, he did show up. Onto the food. Agree with every review that says it tastes like hot oil mush. Will absolutely never order from here again. Not sure how they are still in business.
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
Very surprised at the quality of their food. Considering there are 900 chinese places in the area, and most Yelp reviews say "Great!" then "Sucks!", you can never be sure who to trust, even here. But, I'm a food snob and I know what i'm talking about when it comes to Chinese food, as I'm Jewish. Great BBQ beef skewers. very flavorful, as is the roast pork- a bit too much sauce for my taste, but good nonetheless. They passed my overall test w/ Shrimp and Lobster sauce. in my opinion, a very difficult dish to get right. Most places make it watery and flavorless but they do a pretty good job. This most likely means they can do the other stuff pretty good, too. 4 stars because the food is good and most in the area suck.
google avatar

Millie R.

Yelp
This started out being one of my favorite restaurants in my area but quickly turned out to be the worst! I order for delivery very regularly and noticed my orders were getting later and later. The last time I ordered from them, it took almost a whole hour. Seriously? And a couple of times the sweet and sour chicken was tough. When I called looking for my order, I kept being told it's on the way. I have not ordered from them in a couple of months until tonight. Omg, it took over an hour and they're literally a few blocks from me AND they forgot my drink. I called and she said sorry we are busy. Hmmm no worries honey, I will never bother your crappy restaurant again. Worst place in New Jersey!!!
google avatar

Yoel N.

Yelp
Love this place... while I have not experienced some of the other users complaints, this spot has been good to us and the food is always delivered fresh! 347!!!
google avatar

Jacob B.

Yelp
I live a block away, so despite the volume of negative reviews, I had to taste for myself. Sen Hai is a tiny storefront with few chairs in front and a kitchen in the back. I placed an order for pick-up online, and it was ready on time. That was good. As for the food itself: My hot and sour soup was thick and bland but edible, but the chow fun was worse--mushy and tasteless.

Ron T.

Yelp
The worst General Tso's Chicken that I have ever had. It was delivered way too quickly, and arrived cold and flavorless. I believe that it was not freshly made. They must have given me a previously made order. This comes about a year after I had gone into the store and tried to order, and for some reason the cashier refused to take my order for absolutely no reason. I attributed that to perhaps a communication issue, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt, and continued to order from them for a full year. After what happened today, I will no longer order from here ever again. They absolutely do not respect their customers.
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
"Sen Hai," loosely translated to English, means "violently ill." This lower than mediocre Chinese restaurant is always delivering to folks in my apartment complex, so when I was new to the area, I thought I'd give them a call. What a mistake that was. After waiting for over an hour for our food to be delivered during a sunny day at an off-peak time, our food arrived soaked in grease and lukewarm. Sauces were congealing and our sesame chicken didn't look to be cooked thoroughly. The wonton soup was a quart of flavored saltwater, and we were desperate for water to relieve the taste. The last straw, however, was the fact that I ended up spending the evening in the bathroom thanks to whatever nasty bacteria arrived in my containers of grease. Sen Hai's food had me in absolute agony for several hours, and as a result, I'll never order from them again.
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
Holy crap in a handbag this place is by far the worst chinese food in Jersey City and i grew up here and lived all over the city. 1 1/2 hour wait time for our food and it came lukewarm. The fried rice was dry and bland, the chicken wings were leathery and tasteless. My wife's lo mein was just soggy noodles soaked in a ton of soy sauce. The delivery guy was an idiot. I opened the door and he stared and stared and stared till I asked how much. He blinked!!! Then after that amazing physical leap, he looked down at the bill and mumbled $17 and went back to the thousand yard stare... The person on the phone was rude and not very helpful. Tried it once and I'm done with that. Stay Away!!! Have Fun
google avatar

Kenny L.

Yelp
Very affordable lunch specials. Container of food is pretty filling. Can't complain for $5.25. Pepper steak, onions, and brown rice. The delivery guy was pretty friendly too.
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
Dirty place and gross food. I get a menu at least twice a month shoved under my door from these guys. I finally gave in and tried them. What a mistake! The food was nearly flavorless and what flavor it did have was pretty bad. I had pork lo mein. How do you screw that up? Don't waste your time. The food is bad and they clearly have no qualms about wasting paper with all the menus they hand out.
google avatar

Nichole G.

Yelp
I ordered chicken chow mein and vegetable chop suey, both of which are supposed to be noodle based dishes. I received pork fried rice with chicken and veggies and a side of vegetables with white rice. Due to medical issues, I can't eat pork and I can't eat white rice. I understand if a restaurant runs out of certain ingredients, but I'd appreciate a phone call to let me know so I have a chance to change or cancel my order. I had to throw the majority of the food away and wasted $30. Also, the delivery came almost 30 minutes after the delivery window the restaurant provided. What I could eat was bland. All in all, a bad experience. I will not order from this restaurant again.
google avatar

Devon H.

Yelp
I have gotten take out from Sen Hai many times. Sen Hai makes great Sesame Chicken and fried dumplings There's something off about the Lo Mein. The Lo Mein isn't very good, it's like they used too much soy sauce and oil. I tried the online ordering menu for my last order. The online ordering works, but there is an addition to your wait-time that is just long enough to make you doubt that your Chinese food is coming.
google avatar

Denise C.

Yelp
The roommate and I have been ordering from here since we moved into the neighborhood and have never experienced any problems. Our food is delivered within 30-45 minutes and it is never cold. The staff has always been friendly. Pick-up has never been a problem either. It isn't the best Chinese-American food by any means, but it is certainly not the worst. I definitely prefer it to the other places in our area. I do recommend sticking to the basics, like General Tso's and chicken with broccoli. However, I still don't understand why everyone around here uses yellow rice for pork fried rice. Wonton soup is hit or miss - sometimes it's good; sometimes it tastes like dishwater. I usually hate cream cheese wontons, but I actually like theirs. Hot and sour soup has always been flavorful, although I always add Sriracha or Sambal for more heat. They also give free soda with dinner orders over $12.
google avatar

Debbie C.

Yelp
Well, this ain't no Domino's, cause my order took 45 minutes and a phone call reminder. When I called to inquire, my meal came in five minutes accompanied with a complimentary "I'm sorry" Coke. Usually, I'm not a very forgiving take out customer, but my vegetarian General Tso's was excellent and super duper cheap. The broccoli was steamed fresh and the medallions were sticky but not goopy. Bye, bye Big Chef, Hello Sen Hai! Update: 2013 I recently ordered my usual, and they changed the sauce. It now tastes like some La Choy crap my mom used to serve me as dipping sauce, when she attempted to pass off plain chicken. Barf-o-rama!

Racheal F.

Yelp
Okay DONT EAT FROM HERE I FOUND HAIR IN MY FOOD The Stand of hair was fried into my chicken wing! first of all they cut the wings in half and the chicken is rotten HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!

A C.

Yelp
The absolute worst. How do you mess up Chinese food? Placed my order and it took well over an hour to arrive. When it finally did, it was just a cold pile of mush floating in a pond of oil. Do yourself a favor and skip this place.
