Sensational Subs - Review - Downtown Atlanta - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Georgia State University students need no introduction to this casual downtown sandwich spot. It sits off Edgewood surrounded by campus buildings and is a reliable place to grab a decent sub if you’re in the area. Colorful murals depicting downtown ATL liven up the walls lining the walkway to the order counter. While their soggy bland cheesesteaks leave room for improvement, the cold sub selections are solid. Our favorites (the Italian club and the American club) come heaped with meat and lettuce on your choice of a 7- or 14-inch white or wheat sub. Since it’s a big takeout operation, the dining area is never full, but the casual, relaxed atmosphere is ideal for students, city employees, or if you already paid for two-hour parking and want your meter’s worth. photo credit: Sarah Newman" - Juli Horsford

I love the subs and the salads here! The food is delicious and fresh and made to order. It's easy to order online for pickup, too.

Google
Unimpressed by the lack of meat in the sub. Tried a Chicken sub and a Crab sub, both were okay. Also, you can get a footlong sub with thrice the amount and variety of veggies, protein and sauces from Subway at pretty much the same price point.

Google
I ordered delivery from this store. Not worth the $15 price for a 7 inch sub. Literally one slice of turkey and one slice of Swiss cheese on the roll. They also did not add mustard as I requested. Also no napkins or straw in the bag.

HQ Do

Google
Long time patron of this GSU staple. This place always satisfies my sub cravings. Not sure what kind of magic they got but it’s always the perfect amount of mayo, condiments, meats. The entire menu is appetizing and flavorful. They also make party platters that are perfect for catering! It’s always perfectly constructed and sliced for the ultimate enjoyment.

Google
Tried this place twice in an 1 hr period. My first order was pretty much destroyed because of my DoorDash driver so I couldn’t blame them for that but I got to reorder and I asked for pretty much everything on my on my sub plus extra of a few things. My sub arrived to me like this. Nothing but meat tomato’s onions with a ton of oregano. I can’t even eat it. Sad cause someone recommended this place and I came up short twice.

Fresh and Delicious My Order: #4 Turkey Swiss Tomato Basil Wrap (No Bread), Mayo, Lettuce, Tomato, Oil, Oregano, Mustard, Extra Cheese

Google
I ordered the Italian all the way sub. It was a good sub and the wait time was very minimal. I also received good customer service. I would definitely come back!!!

Google
Best subs I ever had. The proportion of meat, veggies, and bread is so perfect that every bite is amazing from first to last bite!

Yelp
So good and quick. Must try. Get the veggie sub with extra oil and vinegar !!! Best sandwich spot near Georgia state

Yelp
Ordered via Uber and was extremely disappointed. Ham turkey n cheese could have been eaten by a vegetarian due to lack of meat and all veg. They also didn't add requested toppings to my Philly cheesesteak. $30 for 2 sandwich combos that were not prepared correctly is a dealbreaker for me. I don't recommend this restaurant. Go to Rueben's instead.

Yelp
A very busy sub shop. Food is good Fast service. Tables to eat inside Friendly staff.

Marvin J.

Yelp
this place just flat out sucks! the worst part is the owner who responds to reviews accepts no responsibility for ripping off the public and continues to make excuses like you can't please everyone and we have an extra meat option. well fact of the matter is if you made a sandwich properly, there would be no need to add extra meat. on anything.
google avatar

Yelp
Perhaps a name change would be appropriate. I wouldn't actually call my sub "sensational", Decent" at its best! Why is it so difficult to get crusty bread in Atlanta? The roll is soft and squishy. Perhaps adding something to the water would improve the texture of the bread. The taste of the sandwich was fine except for the yellow mustard used. Suggestion: Please use deli or brown mustard on your sandwiches. It would enhance the flavor of your subs.

Yelp
My favorite sandwich shop downtown. Nowhere else comes close. Bread and sandwich very similar to Blimpie, which has also been a favorite of mine for decades.

Jam W.

Yelp
good place to grab a cheap and quick sub. very casual and the food is pretty good. Would recommend.

Yelp
Got a cheesesteak sub and it was pretty good and at a good price for a combo, definitely coming back

Yelp
Popped in here on a whim while working downtown. Ordered quickly and got my food pretty shortly after. I had the chicken salad sub. Exactly what I wanted and expected. Looks like a found a new lunch spot while in the area.

Yelp
Great local sub shop. It even has that old school feel with the white menu with the red letters and numbers. This place has amazing food with great service and very affordable prices. I'd highly recommend checking this place out if you're ever in downtown Atlanta. I got the chicken cheese steak and devoured it in minutes. I wish I had bought two!!

Yelp
This is my ole hangout from 1995-1998..when I was messing with the music game..My peoples used to work here too..I haven't ate here in years..and today I happened to walk by and decided to check it out..Everything flowed smooth..decent customer service..and the ham, turkey and cheese subs are..SWANGIN!(VERY GOOD)..DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED.

Yelp
Amazing and always yummy. James is one of the nicest guys you'll meet and they meet your expectations every time :)

Yelp
Philly cheesesteak is out of this world! With the perfect portion of meat to melty cheese, it's as close to that as you would get in Philadelphia! Crab salad and Italian sub were fresh. Their buns are so soft and fresh. Have never seen voodoo chips outside of New Orleans, so glad they carry these...think bbq with a hint of sea salt vinegar. Super friendly staff and clean facilities. The upstairs has tables overlooking into the dining area. Free board games to keep you entertained. They treat regulars like family! We were inside finishing eating and they were closing up for the day but they unlocked the door when a few late stragglers were dying for a hot sub.

Yelp
Been a fan for 20 years. Great cheesesteak, chicken cheese, cold subs and salads!

Yelp
one of the workers was yelling and threatening to beat up a student repeatedly. none of the other workers or the manager stepped in, they let her go on for at least five minutes. me and my friends do not feel safe there anymore, we are going to have to find somewhere else to drink on campus. i don't think it's safe to hold frat events there anymore

Yelp
When you very boldly in your name claim that you're "Sensational", you better be able to back that up. Well, this place does. Located just catty-corned from Woodruff Park, you are smack on the Georgia State campus when you visit here (and there are college ID specials too). It was pretty busy when I walked in but don't let that dissuade you. Dang, they are FAST! That chain out there that says they're freaky so? Nothing on these guys. And what a delicious sandwich to boot! I had the Italian Club (ham, genoa salami, pepperoni, capicola, & cheese) with all the fixins (garnished with lettuce, tomatoes, oil & vinegar, oregano & mayo) -- of course you can choose which ones you want. Your choice of white or wheat bread as well and since I know bread is a BIG DEAL when it comes to sub preferences: here, it is nice and soft. It's not crusty or flaky or something that's hard to tear into. It's just the perfect carrier for all the ingredients. And it was big. It was fresh. It was tasty. It tasted like a good Italian should. If you find yourself downtown, take a lunch break, grab you a To Go Daily Deal and go enjoy sitting in Woodruff Park across the way or even Hurt Park a few blocks down Edgewood. Very convenient also to the Park Place Atlanta Streetcar stop. Also: they serve beer! And have FREE WI-FI. (those things are very important too) :-)

Yelp
I was in a rush to class when I decided to grab a sub to go. Best decision ever. I had the Italian sub with whole wheat bread and topped off with all the dressings/sauces. The sub was so good and tasted so fresh. Even though I usually don't like whole wheat, the bread tasted very good with the sub. It was not soggy at all even after carrying it to class. I'd highly recommend coming here for a quick, affordable and delicious sub! I also had a bite of my friends philly cheese steak. Also very good :)

Hines B.

Yelp
I walked into this shop not expecting much but looking for something hot and good. I went with the cheesesteak and was not disappointed while not the best I have ever had it did the job and came out fast and hot.

Yelp
First time visiting this place. I was searching for a real sandwich place not the regular schmegular places. I was walking from work & for lost, lol! That's not their fault, I'm terrible with directions, especially while walking. Anyway, as soon as I walked in the aroma hit me and what a pleasant aroma indeed! I was on the phone w/ my boyfriend and said to him, "Oh this is a real sub place". They serve hot subs & cold subs. I got the pastrami & cheese and yummy-yum-yum! I got the combo, which is a sandwich, chips, and a drink (Fanta Cherry). I am a sucker for Fanta Cherry! If they serve it, I'm going patronize. Again, this was my first time, so I wasn't familiar with their setup and what exactly comes on the sandwiches. There are two cashiers but they are not necessarily the ones taking your order. It can feel a little rushed which is unnerving considering it was my first time and I would've at least like to ask for recommendations. But I was able to make a decision and pleased with it. I will definitely go back. Parking is street parking or in a nearby garage. The price is average for the area which is good because the place is frequented by students as well as professionals.

Yelp
I use to visit this place when i worked at Zoo Atlanta back 2009-2010! I recently found they were on DoorDash and was excited to try them again ! When i use to visit the physical location i remember i always order their wings and subs . Fast forward sensation subs still taste delicious . I love them . I didn't realize how big their 12" sub is . It took me two whole days to finish it (i eat small portions now) . The chocolate chip cookies were delicious and the sweet tea was sweet ! I will visit their physical location very soon again ! It's been years

Yelp
I haven't eaten there since the pandemic hit, but I miss it. I hear it has reopened and is making my favorite sub sandwiches again! YAY. I plan to get there soon for a take-out order. THE best tuna sandwich in the world, and many other good things - fresh onsite-baked breads, pickle spears, soft drinks, beer, chips, cookies, ice cream. Nice, fast staff!
google avatar

Dymond C.

Yelp
I have eaten many a sandwich in my college days at GSU. The Philly cheesesteak being a staple. My dad used to take us to the Decatur location when I was a kid long before Subways etc. I went back today for the first time in well over a decade and the food is still hot, fresh and filling. The ladies behind the counter are still preparing & serving up yumminess. I missed the old brunette guy that used to manage back in the day but the guy that was there was nice too and to the point which I love. Now that I'm no longer a college student I was even able to spring for a double scoop of ice-cream which was a great treat! Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
My recent visit went very very bad, i order the American club sandwich with twice the meat and paid an extra $2.00 for it but when i got my sandwich, well you know the rest of the story. No extra meat very bad sandwich the worst ever. Im so mad let me stop right now.
google avatar

Shawn V.

Yelp
Reasonably priced subs. I had the Chicken Philly and it was great. There is a garage next door for parking. I think it's 6$.
google avatar

Tiffany W.

Yelp
The best turkey sub i have had in a while. Everything was fresh and delicious!! I will be back again!!
google avatar

Reggie H.

Yelp
The staff was friendly and easy to talk to. The cheese sub with mushrooms and onions is the perfect combination of crunchy, chewy and juicy. I wish I would've bought two! I gotta learn the sauces they used!

Dude D.

Yelp
When the bread is fresh it's awesome, chips are not always great but I get the American double meat it's really good all the way. Both Philly's (chicken & steak) are good all the way.
google avatar

Yelp
Most amazing subs in the world. I eat here weekly, they remember me. I typically order delivery through door dash because I live their discount on delivery service during lunch hours. Please never stop that!!!

Yelp
I discovered Sensational Subs in the late 80's or early 90's when there were several locations in Atlanta. One by one they quietly faded away as the national sub chains inundated the Atlanta market. in 2009 I took a job working downtown and was delighted to find the Sensational Subs on Edgewood. I made it a point to eat there at least one per week. I tell my friends and co-workers to try it. I sometimes pick up sandwiches for family members. in 2009/2010 there were two older gentlemen running the shop. I believe they were the owners. One of them was very serious, the other more outgoing and humorous. The more serious guy retired 3 or 4 years ago. Sometimes his humor crosses over into sarcasm. I always over looked the sarcasm because the sandwiches are great and I think he is really a nice guy. However, last week I saw him bite a customer's head off. I thought to myself, he should be mindful of how he comes across because she could be a first-time customer not accustomed to his sarcasm. Today, there was a misunderstanding between us. I ended up with another customer's sandwich. I'm not sure if I misheard him or he misspoke. However, he cannot speak to customers any way he wants. I was during the lunch rush. He had lines back to the door. I am happy to see them open and doing so much business when at least a half dozen eateries in the area went out of business. A few minutes before my mishap, a customer returned a sandwich for being made incorrectly. With the crowds and mistakes, I understand the stress. After I returned my sandwich he discovered it was there and he did not know it. He then yelled at the cooks so that everyone could here to let him know when the food is ready. He also snapped at the man working the other register. I did not recognize the other man. Apparently he is new or filling in. For their, sake, I hope he gets a handle on his temper. There are too many other options in walking distance, 1 Rising Roll, 1 Jersey Mikes, 1 Jimmy John's, 2 Subways, 2 Quiznos, and a few mom & pop shops.

Kimber B.

Yelp
I went for lunch after seeing great reviews online. The service was super fast! My sub was ready before I even had a chance to put my card back in my wallet! The taste is delicious! And the black woman and the man at the front were very friendly and hospitable! I will be back!

Yelp
This is the Sensational Subs that Georgia State students go to. It's on Gilmer St, or whatever that street is that everyone walks down when they are coming from Aderhold towards General Classroom Building. The guy who works there is a cool dude, and he never looks at you funny for ordering a pitcher of beer when you are just by yourself. In fact, it's not uncommon to see a few, or several people sitting alone with pitchers, or sitting together, each person with their own pitcher. Sensational Subs has been serving small pitchers of beer for $4.10 and large ones for $7.40 for several years. When the guy pours your pitcher, he fills it all the way up, and then fills up your cup, too. He is a cool dude. Yes, it is cheap crappy beer, but it's just what you want when you're in the middle of a stressful day at school. Or about to start one, or whatever. The subs are great. Simple. White or wheat? A simple decision, unlike Subway, which has more than 4 kinds of bread with complicated names. Not to dis Subway, though. Subway has better tuna. The philly cheese steak at Sensational is quite good. I like how they serve Golden Flake potato chips, and they have the dill pickle kind. They also have ice cream. I like this place.

Yelp
More like SinSational !! Super fast and yummy. They've been around 30 years and definitely know what they're doing.

Yelp
Yes! A replacement for the elusive Blimpie!! Since I don't eat at Subway, and I can't find a Blimpie, and Jimmy John's didn't deliver to my old work site, and doesn't deliver to my home, I needed to find a sub place. Enter YELP! I was near GSU, and Yelpers directed me to this place. What delicious sandwiches, and ever better bread! Mmmm! Be warned, there is NO parking. It's right near the 5 Points train station downtown, ON the GSU campus, so no parking. Howver, it's worth the illegal park, throw on your hazards, and run in! There is a wonderfully nice gentleman making the sandwiches, and he's great. He writes nothing down, but gets your sandwich perfect! Prices are reasonable, too. Glad I went, and I intend to visit over and over. You should know that the onions are SUPER DUPER STRONG.

James W.

Yelp
I've enjoyed these subs for years. I believe this is the last location. It would be great to see them grow again. The service is always great and as fast and better tasting then JJs. The soft fresh bread and shredded lettuce make the sandwich light almost like a salad with the your choice of meats and cheese. Also they have some of the best sweet tea. My only complaints....they are closed on the weekend and there aren't more locations.
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
I am a GA State Student and I grab a quick lunch (and sometimes study too, free wifi yay!) here between classes at least once a week. The food is cheap but its delicious, I'm obsessed with the philly chicken & cheese, it's especially good if you add mushrooms on it. Simple, cheap, good- best way to describe this place. The guys behind the counter are REALLY friendly too, it makes this place really inviting.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
Definitely a hole in the wall type restaurant in downtown. It's really close to my office so I pop in from time to time when I have a hankering for a sandwich. I like this place better than subway...but not as much as quiznos. Overall the sandwiches are pretty average. I like their bread more than most sandwich shops. The lunch sandwich deals are a really good price, overall. Sandwich, chips and a drink for like $7.00. Avoid the noon lunch rush or be prepared to wait a while to get your order in. The only negative impression I have of this place is some of the staff. I've seen one guy mess things up (small mistakes) a few times and another guy working there verbally abuse him as a result. This seems totally inappropriate and I've seen it happen twice.
google avatar

MrHack I.

Yelp
I love this place. It's student friendly and the food is delicious and quick. The price isn't too bad. Make sure to get your sub card stamp so you can start earning rewards.
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
Good sub! Went during lunch rush, was extremely quick! Would stop there again if in the area.
google avatar

Zack S.

Yelp
A place in Atlanta that actually knows what a real sub is supposed to taste like. You won't find a better value or a better sandwich in my opinion. The employees are also super nice and if they aren't busting their butts knocking out a rush within minutes then they'll happily talk to you and get to know you. Thanks for the great food y'all.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a fantastic little restaurant conveniently located near Georgia State University. After crossing by this place many many times, I finally decided to stop in for lunch. The interior isn't exactly a sugo or anything, but feels very homey. I ordered the ham, salami, and cheese sub (roughly $5), and I must say that I am impressed. The cashier was an elder gentleman, who was incredibly friendly when taking my order. Within minutes, my sub was served. At first sight, the sub didn't look like it was made with precision, and the maker must have quickly slapped some ingredients together (which actually could have been possible). Overall, the sub tasted exceptional! Compared to the overrated subways across the street, this small gem is the clear winner. Price is great. Food is great. Atmosphere is great. Service is great. This restaurant has my approval. I highly recommend you stop by this place if you have the chance. I promise you will not regret it!
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
They have some of the best combo deals in the area. I have had the cold cut and the meatball sub. I always get the meal deal. The cold cut is your run of the mill sub sandwich, somewhere in between average and good. The meatball is rather bland. The meal deal makes this place more appealing. Don't go in expecting the best sub sandwich ever. It gets the job done, nonetheless. They have a pretty efficient operation, although it is hard to get a refill during peak hours. The upstairs area is pretty cool. They have free wi-fi and easily accessible outlets to charge your devices. If you don't have a whole lot of money but you want to buy enough food to get full, I'd definitely recommend this place.

Ashley B.

Yelp
Mannnn sensational subs are amazing!!!! It was my first time and won't be my last. You get a bang for your $$. This goin on my list of favorites. I had the lg Italian and it was really good!! The bread is the best bc it's not alll bread little meat. The meat to bread ratios is great. Amazing subs!
google avatar

Che W.

Yelp
Let me start by saying subway forget you, Blimpies forget you too overcharging folks for those sub-par sandwiches. When I'm working on GSU campus I light up like a Christmas Tree because I know I'm going to eat at Sensational Subs for lunch. This is by far THE BEST subs around no questions asked. It's affordable and it you'll be full as hell. I wish I could eat and go home I be so sleepy lol. The chicken philly is awesome I'm talking bout holy Dorritos Batman, turkey and cheese was also extremely good get extra meat. The meatball was so good I was dipping the bread on the paper to get all the sauce(yeah I'm that greedy) lol the bread here is a big part of the great sandwiches it's always soft and fresh. This place needs a franchise seriously. I would eat here way more often if I could find an inexpensive place to park. Do me a favor and just eat here.

Yelp
i've been coming here for years & SS never disappoints. food is consistently delicious and the service is always quick and friendly. i've told several coworkers and friends about this spot and they all agree. added bonus - they have a frequent flyer card which can earn you a free meal!
google avatar

Marisa F.

Yelp
Don't let the hole-in-the-wall store front fool you, these subs are great! They're way better than the Subway, and cheaper for what you get. This is where the cool kids at GSU get lunch because they've got pitchers a student can actually afford. Makes a great halfway spot between GCB and Adherhold. Oh, and now they take MCard/Visa but not AmEx.
google avatar

Bobbin W.

Yelp
Sensational Subs reminds me of 1993, and I like that. Today I ordered a tuna sub all the way, worried that it might be piled high with weird pickled substances, but instead less was more: a modest layer of tuna salad, onion slices, tomato slices, shredded lettuce, spices and what tasted like vinegar. Even though the 'wich contained no cheese, I gobbled it up. That's a huge deal for cheese-adoring me.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
I remember when my father would take me to this place when it was on Ponce De Leon. They had a drive-thru window. I rediscovered this place just from searching online and hearing my coworkers talk about it. I was suprised to see the gentleman from my childhood; I believe his name is Leslie. But the subs are great and just the same as I remember from when I was a kid. This place is wonderful. Keep up the good work.
google avatar

Tara M.

Yelp
As much as I wanted to not like Sensational Subs (maybe its the fact that I almost get run over from people leaving the parking deck next door) I have to say I have succumbed to the awesome sandwich making abilities of this quaint little spot. Helps that they serve beer too :)
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to go for cheap beer and good sandwiches. The american is killer, along with the oreo icecream! Its one of my favorite places to visit on break.
