Senses Restaurant

An experience for all the senses: sight, smell, taste – a meal that touches the soul. This was our first, but definitely not our last, visit to Senses in Amsterdam. Senses definitely serves Michelin-starred cuisine – even if Chef Renaud hasn't yet earned a star. For Christmas Eve, the Senses team came up with something special: a unique dish for each day of Christmas. These were complemented by particularly intense flavor combinations, for example, with seafood or vegetarian options with mushrooms and truffles. Humnah, Anastasiia and Nina, who looked after us, were incredibly attentive and had excellent drink recommendations to accompany the menu. These included non-alcoholic sparkling wine and wine options. Again, exceptionally good! We will definitely return on one of our next visits to Amsterdam. Perhaps the restaurant will have earned its first Michelin star by then. We certainly hope so.

My wife and I had the honour and pleasure of dining at Senses in Amsterdam, Holland. A small 22 couverts restaurant, on the ground floor of the Albus Hotel. The kitchen is masterfully and creatively run, by Chef Renaud Goigoux. The restaurant offers from two to seven courses, bringing to life the Chef’s choice tasting menu. The restaurant serves only fish, shellfish and vegetarian creations. No meat appears on the menu at all. The genre is definitely French haute cuisine with hints and dashes of Japan and Thailand, without becoming an all too overplayed fusion concept. Particular attention is given to the charcoals that bring the delightful smokiness to a couple of the dishes. The subtle and delicate introduction of Yuzu, Lemon Grass, Caifir Lime to one of Renaud’s signature dishes brought me vivid memories of my journeys through the Orient. Chef Renaud is accompanied by Sarah one of two of his sous chefs. I’m afraid I had already drunk a little wine, when we were offered a tour of the minuscule kitchen. I feel embarrassed to admit, I can’t remember his name. The front of house was shared by Anastasia, Jose Maria, Rosa and Noumou. It was a beautifully orchestrated ballet of wine and food, all elegantly and perfectly served, We went for the “All In” choice bringing the 7 courses with paired wines. The wines that had been chosen, for this event, were not from the great vineyards of France and other European collaborators, however there was purpose, deep wine knowledge and delicacy in the choices. All wines harmonized perfectly with each dish. Be prepared for a two and a half hour wonderful experience. Both chef and his sous-chefs come to the table to serve the specific creams, foams and bouillons. The price of this wonderful meal, came out to EUR400 for the two of us. The whole dining experience from: the ambience; the friendly and warm staff engagement; the kitchen tour offered by the chef; lastly, and most importantly, the delicious, innovative and sensorial experience of each individual dish, makes me wonder why this restaurant has not yet received its first Michelin star. I would like to suggest that the Gods of Michelin should really drop by one of these days. We read about the restaurant in the Michelin Guide, so decided to try it out. We were unsure because the guide says little about this fabulous restaurant. I highly recommend Senses to all those that travel through the Nederlands. Its worth a detour to eat there. Make sure to reserve a day or two in advance owing to the small amount of tables. Congratulation to you chef Renaud Goigoux, your cuisine is delightful and your team fabulously prepared.

What a hidden gem in the center of Amsterdam! We had the full Senses experience (vegan version), and everything was absolutely delicious. The chef Renaud blends French cuisine with Asian influences and the result is exquisite. We tried the spring menu and really enjoyed it. A great spot if you’re looking to treat yourself.

This is a great spot for celebrating either with friends or your partner while enjoying a very well curated plant-based dinner. It's in the middle of the center but the place is not hectic and provides a nice oasis away from the city buzz. The food was very well thought, the flavours were well executed and everything was delicious. The chef is very modern, but the plates are filling and you are not left with a sense of hunger.

An excellent dining experience. Lovely staff! We came for a company Christmas party and we had an excellent time. The food really surpassed my expectations! Even dishes with ingredients that I don't normally like that much blew me away! The manager took excellent care of us.

We had the 6-course menu with one of us eating gluten-free diet. Food was delicious and gluten-free taken into account where possible (some bread missing, but all dishes served gluten-free). The service and atmosphere were excellent. Highly recommend!

Came here with some friends. I enjoyed the food and good service. The only thing I was not a fan of was the pacing of the multiple course meal. Three hours is a bit long for a dinner.

I reserved 3 course prefixed early dinner. It is a lovely place located inside a hotel its entrance you are suppose to use to reach the restaurant. The food was unique and beautiful to look at. You get pre appetizer and 4? desserts (I lost count) that are all included in the menu. Service was good too.

This was my first Michelin Starred experience and I cannot believe it's taken me this long to treat my mouth to such a wonderful flavor journey. I had no idea that food could do those things to my mouth. Pause. But really though, every ingredient and spice was coupled beautifully with the other and not to mention the perfect pairings of wine with each course. I left this restaurant feeling more than satisfied and almost as if I didn't pay enough for the magic I experienced. I think about these courses on a weekly basis and can't wait to be treated to such a symphony of savory, succulent, and sweet.

If you're looking to experience food that truly heightens your senses, this is the place to go! The creativity behind each dish, combined with the overall experience, is absolutely mind-blowing. My group went for the 6-course chef's menu, and by the end, we were so full we almost had to be rolled out. ENJOY! PS: We made the mistake and didn't fully make a reservation. Amazing food and presentation, service and ambiance. We had a wonderful time. They accomodated our dietary restrictions well.

We had an incredible meal at Senses! The service was impeccable and the food was delicious and interesting.

Food ranged from good to truly memorable, especially the vegan-leaning items, and the service was as expected in this price range. But the non-alcoholic beverage pairing was truly _atrocious_, ranging from decent cocktails too sweet for the food, to a supposed fruit beer that was essentially an alco-pop with no alco - I'd have been offended to be served it in McDonalds. Judging by the wine pairing I had with the dessert, they do know how to do that - so do yourself a favor, and stick to that or water.

We had the six course lunch some of us had wine pairing. Everything was very good. The food and the wine. The interesting thing is that there is a wine cellar that is in the floor. The restaurant had a very nice feeling and decorations. The service was excellent. The waitress was very friendly, and afterwards we all had Portwine and spent about a half an hour talking to the waitress. I would certainly go there again.

Minimal yet luxurious decor. Witty artwork and open kitchen concept. The staff is super friendly and engaging. You can feel their passion for what they are about to serve. Each entree is served with black gloved hands. No detail is left untouched. The serving-ware is original and complements each meal perfectly. Every bite brought my taste buds on a journey. Enjoyed a Dutch sparkling wine and ended with a full bodied dark red Dutch vino. Thank you to Rianne and her amazing team. Lars you are a visionary. Bravo!!!

Great experience, price is fair! Celebrating with my boyfriend, the food was decent, we both had 5 courses dinner menu. Would recommend to my friends if they are in Amsterdam

Felt like royalty dining in this really neat place. We so happened to stumble across this place last minute and was sure happy that we did. Service was excellent. Nothing went wrong and everything was perfect. The portions were small but good and you were definitely full once you left. You don't get to pick what you eat you just pick how many courses you want and they bring them out to you. It was a really neat surprise to see how the chef cooked each course. Highly recommend

This place was a real treat. To echo others, each dish - from the presentation to the flavors - was so unique and whimsical. Senses is not your average stuffy "French-inspired" Michelin place; the chef really does enjoy playing with your senses (with some things being more out there than most)! Everything was a delight, although there were some occasional misses in flavors. I didn't enjoy some of our amuse bouches, finding them a little strange - especially the little sandwich-cracker thing - but I don't mind that, because the actual courses were delicious. My absolute favorite: a little chocolate coated ice cream pop embedded in the chocolate dessert plate. Such great fun, as Mary Berry would say! Service was friendly and thoughtful; they offered to take our bags for us and store them behind the hotel concierge desk as our reservation was right before we were about to leave Amsterdam, so we arrived with suitcases and all. Looking forward to my next visit :)

This place deserves more than 5 stars! Let me start w/ this. If you're looking for a full culinary experience, Senses is the place to come eat. The chef is creative w/ presentation, but also works magic w/ combining flavors. They offer 3-6 course meals that you can enjoy w/ a wine pairing to fully enjoy the flavors of the meal. We opted to go w/ their 5 course meal and wine pairing. The service here is amazing. Each course is brought to your table and explained as to what it is. Your taste buds are in the hands of the chef. So be sure you're open to trying anything and everything. You won't be disappointed. From what I'm told the menu changes so what you read in one review may not be the same as someone else. If you're not sure what the courses will have, call ahead and ask. At the end of our meal we were given a recipe book. SO COOL! We didn't expect to be as blown away as we were. Since we looked at their website and saw how well put together it was we knew we would be in for a treat. In Amsterdam no less! Make a reservation, treat yourself, thank me later!

Senses works with food to create art pieces! We were in for the special treat. A group of three of us ordered the 4 courses. Before the first dish arrived, we were treated with Mini appetizers. They were so fun to look at. The hot dog was smaller than the thumb. The cucumber ball was like a chocolate truffle size. The cavier was simply divine. Each dish subsequently showed the skill and uniqueness of the chef. There were so many rounds of interludes. Through the portion might look small, we were so full by the end of this 4 hours meal. Be prepared to spend a lot of time here enjoying the food. We had so much fun and truly enjoyed this unique experience. A must when in Amsterdam.

Shows up if you search for desserts but you cant have desserts without having a full course meal. The manager was nice and it looked good but yelp has it listed in wrong category

Great food/wine pairings. Had the 4-course pairings tonite. Salmon with Wakame Salad, shredded pork & fig, diamond steak with Augratin potatoes and fresh spinach. Wines ranged from Wente Mornin Fog Chardonnay to a Spansh Zin and Rioja.

I LOVED the food here. I think I had 4 course meal and from the beginning to the end everything was so perfect. I was actually surprised that their food was fusion/creative influenced with Japanese food. Food scene is universal. Very impressive food and beautiful presentation. I highly recommend this place. Our server was very nice and friendly.

We stayed at the hotel at the end of May and ended up having dinner there completely worth it, loved it. The 5 course surprise menu was totally worth the surprise The food was so unique so well created and so tasteful. Presentation was beautiful

came in here for their surprise menu prices are actually quite reasonable for a place that has creative and high quality food. 3 course is like 35 euro, 4 course is 45 euro and they have up to 7 courses I believe. the place is small and cozy, servers are attentive. oddly, a 3/4 course tasting menu takes 3 hours to get through!! don't come in if you are on a time crunch. food is quite creative. some of the dishes were better than others but overall you can taste the high quality and some dishes will definitely amaze you. they are able to accommodate your preferences (which is nice as well)

Chef was creative with the meals and presentations , the wines were well picked and went along with each dish , the staff was very good and friendly. Atmosphere is intimate but relaxed. Great value for money!

The atmosphere was understated and elegant: warm copper and bronze tones in the walls are picked up in everything from the lampshade linings to the fresh arrangements of autumn flowers. Cream and silver accents are punctuated by flashes of pink flowers in the table vases. Inoffensive world music played quietly in the background. The service is excellent and attentive without being overbearing. Seating and menu were prompt, and a slight wobble in the table was noticed immediately and fixed by the staff. The waitress had an easy charm. I had the seven course chef's tasting menu: To start, there was hot-out-of-the oven multigrain bread and butter, served on a beautiful olive wood board. 1) A trio of a Smoked Salmon Spiral, Salmon Rillette, topped with arugula, and Cucumber Bas frois with creme fraiche and a swipe of saffron mayo. The overall effect was smooth, verdant, and light - nice way to whet the palate. 2) Baked duck breast with compote and white bread brioche with a balsamic vinaigrette drizzle. The peppery arugula nicely complemented the earthiness of the duck. 3) Corn soup with cashews, small shrimp, and herb oil - a nice nutty follow-up to the richness of the duck. The sweetness of the corn and cashews reinforced one another, unified by the creamy soup base, accented by the texture of the shrimp, which contrasted with the crunchy cashews. 4) Plaice fillet on a bed of fennel with a peeled cherry tomato on top, accompanied by mashed potatoes with mixed sweet tomato, tart fennel, and salted fish - a soft and subtle interplay of flavors complemented by the soft textures of the mashed potatoes and cooked fennel and greens. 5) Diamond steak with wild spinach, a fried sauerkraut ball, and a potato layer cake with a variety of sauces (an earthy, almost mushroom-flavored au jus, herbal oil, and mustard with a slight hint of honey) - The mineral flavor of the spinach brings out the richness of the steak while the texture of the fried sauerkraut's outside contrasts nicely with the melted inside and tenderness of the beef diamond steak. Meanwhile, the simple potato cake is a refreshingly simple break from the complexity of the other flavors. 6) Cheese plate with grape pear sauce and nut butter: camembert; goat cheese rolled in ashes; and cow's milk cheese with red bacteria (like the kind that produces blue cheese, but red). The pear sauce picks up the fruit in the bread, while balanced out by the nut butter. 7) Cinnamon milkshake and amaretto cheesecake with raspberry and chocolate drizzle - a sweet ending to the evening that wasn't too heavy, whose combination of flavors had an almost lightly smokey aftertaste. Finally, I was offered a "Senses" chocolate and Dilmah green tea with jasmine flowers and fair trade honey to help keep me warm on the cold walk home.

Such an amazing dining experience!! The food was exquisite and prepared with such love and creativity. The prices were amazing and the food was delicious and gorgeous! The chef is so talented!!

Really liked our experience here; we actually almost went back a second time in three days because it was so good. We had the two course surprise menu, a bottle of wine, dessert wine (which was some sort of cider-port type blend I'd never seen before). The meal was delightfully filling, exceptionally affordable, and very artistic. The presentation was really quite fantastic. The wait staff were a bit slow/confused but the chefs behind the scenes clearly were on form-- everything was delicious and allergies were paid attention to perfectly. Random, but you should check out their bathrooms if you go-- very cool sink fixtures.

We had the 4 course surprise menu which was an incredible selection of stunningly pieced together dishes. A true concert of delicious culinary exploration. Good things take time, hence you should bring plenty with you (4 courses took 3 hours). Regardless of the time spent, it was well worth it and I would highly recommend coming here, and would gladly come again in the future.

Glad I did NOT read the review from 2011 before we went there for a late lunch - we (my son and I) really liked the decor, and Roos (Rose) our waitress was lovely - The restaurant is attached to a four-star hotel, one with a real lobby (unlike the two-stars I usually stay in) and uber-modern restrooms - I had a 'caprese' broodjie (?) sandwich to us 'Mercans - tasty pesto, some whole pine nuts, basil, mozzarella that tasted fresh, on two slabs of good whole grain bread. I did not need dinner later, just a snack. Will (my grown son) had a large burger on a good size roll which he declared perfectly cooked, medium well. His side of fries were fresh hot delicious and came with a smoke flavor mayo made in house by the chef, with his own (secret)formula. - GRILL TASTE for real. Maybe doesn't sound as good, but if you like the taste of a grilled steak or burger, this taste was great. And it did not linger too long on the palate - They serve dinner here too, but it's a lot pricier than lunch, which was a great buy. The lunch for the two of us, with one drink for me, and three for Will (cappucino, iced tea and a coke) came to under 30 Euro - Will left Roos a little extra, he thought she was very attractive (his remark to me after leaving started with "If I were single..." Gotta go, more yummy food finds to explore, we're only here until tomorrow - PS it's winter, no fruit flies

Senses is my favourite fine dining restaurant in Amsterdam. Take Chef's special and enjoy! You won't regret, this food is worth for every cent and actually, compared to Finnish Michelin * restaurants, Senses is not expensive at all. And the location, it's easy, near the flower market. Outside you may doubt how fine restaurant this is, it doesn't look so good but really, but you love the food.

I ate a 3 course surprise menu by myself on a whim. It was surprisingly not expensive (35 euro) for this level of taste and presentation. I didn't leave hungry (unlike some modern fufu restaurants which give you 3 peas and a carrot sculpture. The food was genuinely surprising and utterly delicious. Easily, and by the far the best meal I had in Amsterdam over 2 weeks. And possibly one of the best in Europe overall in 2 months. Almost want to remove a star for the rather silly fashion-show house music they play while you eat but taking 1 star away from 6 star food still equals 5 stars :)

Definitely highest point of being in Amsterdam. Never have I had such good food, service, and experience in a restaurant until now. Would come back a million times just to eat at this restaurant. This is a can't miss if you are anywhere near it.

This is one of my most amazing palatable experiences with edible masterpieces that will make your mouth beg for more. My husband and I got a 5-course meal groupon prior to visiting Amsterdam and made reservations by email as the groupon required. The food was fantastic. It's not for the non adventurous who don't like variety in their food but simply order the same thing over and over. The service was great. The gap between serving was a little too long for my taste. The whole dinner took almost 3 hours. I would come back to this restaurant with or without a groupon. Your senses will be gratified.

Had 3-course dinner. We had a modification of spring roll for welcome dish. Amuse Bouche: 3 plates - Apple compote with coconut and crispy noodles, rice cracker with peanut sauce, peanut and chopped pickles, Bon-Bon (veggie and chicken) All were Delicious. Course 1: Delicately Smoked Pollock topped with herring caviar and herring onto with crispy shell. Pollock was excellent. Smooth, flaky. Course 2: Cod with couscous and variety of cherry tomatoes Amuse Bouche: Passion fruit jelly on a soft cookie. Nice and refreshing. Course 3: Cranberry panacotta, with different kinds of colorful fruit based sorbet. Delicious Excellent coffee with petit fours We were pretty happy with food, presentation and service

In all honesty, I'm glad this was only a 3 star joint as I visited on my ill fated (Ill being the operative word) weekend in Amsterdam. We didn't seek it out specifically, we just kinda stumbled across this well-presented restaurant as it was opposite the flower markets in tourist central. The venue itself is very well kept, clean and has an air of decorum (leading on from the design of the posh hotel it's attached to). It was relatively empty on a Saturday lunchtime with our group of five and two couples enjoying a glass of wine and a light bite to eat. The service was fantastic. We were seated and given the menu within a couple of minutes of entering. Our waitress was polite and friendly, checking the appropriate amount of times whether we wanted anything and if everything was alright with the food/drinks. From ordering, we only had about a 15 minute wait for food. Most of us were just having paninis/sandwiches, but one of our number had ordered a hamburger which would took slightly longer to prepare. When my panini arrived, it looked perfectly fine. Plenty of melted mozzarella, warm... Y'know, standard. However, when I looked on the underside the paper towel it had been served on top of on the plate had gotten stuck to the bread! Cue me desperately trying to pick bits of black napkin off my lunch. Not good. Once I had gotten -most- of the paper off, it tasted ok. Not as fresh and tasty as I had as hoped (the tomato didn't taste as sharp and the basil not as fresh as I would have liked), but again - fine. I was only drinking cola and water so in total my bill came to around 10 euro. Not too bad, but I felt I could have gotten a better "non paper coated" panini elsewhere. The rest of the group enjoyed their food and the accompanying wine, but it's not somewhere I would hurry back too.

Excellent food with carefully defined and integrated flavors and with stunning visual aesthetics stimulates all your senses! Stayed in the Albus Hotel right above the restaurant and stumbled into this incredible place and totally enjoyed the food and excellent service! Thumbs up!

Service was impeccable, atmosphere is very hip. They are happy to cater to any dietary restrictions or allergies. The Surprise menu is the way to go, for sure. By American standards, portions are very small, but there are completely and totally satisfying. My vegetarian main course was probably the most well-crafted dish I've ever eaten, both aesthetically and gustatorily. Gorgeous everything.

Wonderful experience! We enjoyed our anniversary dinner at Restaurant Senses tonight. The service was amazing and the food was a sensation. We would highly recommend 7 courses with wine pairings to truly experience as the chef intends. Every course was delicious and the wine and beer (yes beer) complimented perfectly. The wait staff was meticulous and able to accommodate my allergies as well. I appreciated the extra questions to ensure I was able to enjoy everything - even though that meant I had 6 courses when my husband had 7 to make sure my dietary needs were met. I loved how relaxed the experience was even though it was very posh - only in sophistication, not in pretense. Thank you for a wonderful evening. Cheers.

Immediately after dinner, I was happy. Delicious starters and decent main course - wine was paired well. But I'm almost sure that something I ate there made me sick, so just be aware. And the fruit flies were out of control! Also, we were the only diners there from 7-9 p.m. on a Tuesday evening, in the heart of Amsterdam. Maybe everyone else already knows??

Beautiful plating and such unique food! You don't know what you'll be served - you just choose how many courses you want, which makes it a really unique dining experience. I really enjoyed it here!

We booked online and were excited to eat here, but were sent away because we had our small, amazing dog with us. Their lo$$.

The Senses was formerly called get together. The food is excellent. If you want to be surprised, then take the surprise menu. We ordered a la carte and it was really something! It's extraordinary food, but not pretentious. They pay attention to every little detail, for instance I had an onion sauce that was really great. We'll be back soon! This restaurant is associated with the Albus hotel. Even on a Saturday night you usually don't have to make a reservation, but you can drop by spontaneously.

I happened across this Resturant on a business stop over in Amsterdam and it was one of the happiest happenstances I can remember. The cusine was fabulous and totally innovative. The place is very modern and the food hits the mark with the atmosphere. Try to specials - I did all night and was so happy I did.

We dined at Senses in early Oct 2016. It was a Saturday night and we did not have a reservation but were very lucky to be seated due to some no-shows! (DO make reservations!) Our 4-course meals were amazing and the various amuse-bouche made it even more special. As others have said, it was worth every penny. The staff was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Senses is highly recommend if you're in Amsterdam.
