Find the Best Liquor Stores in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Many of the most common spirits one would reach for to build a classic drink involve an expensive bottle to be poured from in small quantities. This post-prohibition grandfathered-in liquor and grocery store in northeast Minneapolis offers many of those same products at an often lower cost than can be found anywhere else." - Eben Stine

Google
Terrific store in a great neighborhood. Has become my go-to location for getting meat as the prices are terrific with a surprisingly good selection for the store size. Has pretty much anything you’d need for an average grocery run and is always well organized and clean. Definitely lucky to have a high quality grocery store in NE as most neighborhoods do not around MPLS.

Google
Nice grocery/liquor store. Good prices. The sausages from the meat department are killer! Too bad I don't live around the corner. This place is integral to the character of Nordeast.

Google
An absolutely charming neighborhood grocery store. Everyone is amazing! Excellent selection.

We have been big fans of Sentyrz since we moved to the neighborhood. They've got everything you need and are mere minutes from our apartment. Tonight, however, the kind folks at Sentyrz really came through for us. I've been having car trouble for a while, and of course my battery died while my partner was inside shopping (I was hanging out in the car). My partner talked with one of the employees and explained the situation. Next thing we knew, the kindest employee was out in the parking lot with us (in the snow no less) jumping my car. Not only is this a wonderful neighborhood grocery store, but the people working there are truly kind. We are very grateful for Sentyrz.

Google
Nice fairly priced market which doubles as a liquor store for a one stop shop experience! Very convenient for us Northeast siders!

Google
My local family grocery, i know the employees by first name basis and enjoy going there to shop. Clean and well lit inside. My only complaint is sometimes the sales prices don't ring up at the register, so keep track of the sales prices.

Google
I've been going to this store for years, the people who work there have been there for years and are so helpful and friendly, it's a neighborhood staple for sure, I can find things I can't find at other stores.

Google
This is an old school, local grocery store and liquor store. I love coming here because the staff is so helpful and I like supporting the community.

Yelp
Always great staff, and different items for sale, I always leave with more than intended to buy!

Yelp
Love having a local grocery in our neighborhood. Wally and team are always there to help with excellent service, good selection (but not overwhelming) and reasonable prices.

Yelp
Friendly, local. The same family has run this store for generations and it is obvious they care for their community.

Yelp
What a post-war supermarket used to be. Family operated, local, not a warehouse, but pretty good selection, and carry some small local and premium as well as ethnic stuff. Unpretentious, diverse clientele and employees, a looser atmosphere than the chains, real conversations, workers can kid each other and not have someone tell them they aren't fitting the corporate image. Probably better than NE Lunds at rotating perishables and which uses misleading and inconsistent dating schemes. I'm especially impressed that if you need the manager, they give you to the owner. I had to speak to him twice about safety issues (neither within his control) : A brand of bottled red cabbage had a lot that was barely cooked and missing the vinegar - a setup for botulism. Unlike the chains, he understood the problem instantly and was already having the staff pull the items before I ended the call. The other - a charitable aluminum can drop he allowed a charity to set up at the end of his parking lot had been colonized by yellow jackets, and he was similarly proactive. What a business should be: A friendly, unpretentious place, with an owner that takes pride in the business and is professional and safety conscious.

Yelp
Great little local Nordeast grocery store with its own liquor store inside. The groceries are a little spendy, but if you need just a quick dinner pick-up or forgot an item or two, this is your spot. It's so close to me I just hop on my bike most times to go grab what I need. The staff know the regulars & are very friendly, too. If you're ever in my hood, check them out.

Yelp
Sentyrz is an awesome store! I've been going there over 20 years. Wally Sentyrz and all of the workers are family. They offer specials on a wide variety of items from liquor to awesome hand- rolled veggie rolls. I've even purchased tomato plants in the Spring. Take a stop in. I love them and I avoid the crowded, spendy large grocery chains. Tell them Rosie sent you!

Yelp
This is the only spot in Minnesota where you can buy your groceries and alcohol at the same time. Dontcha know? The store has been owned by the same Polish family since 1923. And I don't think there are many other grocers that cater to the Polish cuisine as well as they do. Service is excellent! It helps that all of the employees are true Minnesota Nice, and their accent is on point! I feel so at home when I shop here. Because it's such a small grocer, their selection is pretty limited. However, they almost always have what I'm looking for, and their produce is extra fresh!

Yelp
Always friendly staff, decent food selection for a small neighborhood store, and the best prices on lots of local beer, wine, and liquor. Surprising selection of local beers, including some of the best brewers in Minneapolis and St. Paul. I love a bright IPA or pale ale or sour or solid porter from Surly, Insight, Fair State, etc. Some of the liquor prices even beat big chain stores. Check the weekly ad for best deals, like $7.99 for 4-pack of tall cans from local featured breweries.

Yelp
If you consume eight daily servings of anything, this is not the place for you. If you enjoy classy ice cream, this is not the place for you. If you appreciate clear signage indicating merchandise location, this is not the place for you. If you seek some combination of chips/dead cow/exotic beer/strange cashier editorialization, this is the place for you. This is the place for me.

Yelp
I can't stress enough the convenience of the grocery / liquor store. I mean, really...how many are there out there? I heard that Sentyrz was grandfathered in, which is why they got to keep their current setup. I'm always amazed that this tiny little store has what I need. I assume an "ethnic market" of this size (and Sarah J, you're right, there's nothing ethnic about it) won't ever carry the random things I ask of it, but I'm constantly surprised. I wouldn't recommend shopping for your produce, but again, if you're in a pinch, they'll definitely have what you need saran-wrapped ten times. The food that can't be beat is their brats and sausages. They make their own brand and they are fantastic AND cheaper than all the others in the store. hmmm.. coincidence? Probably not. Either way, be sure to take advantage of a typical NE fare done right. Favorite Sentyrz moment: While my boyfriend and I were getting a few things at the store, we just got word that our offer was accepted on our house down the street. Once the staff overheard, we all celebrated with a small wine tasting. Each staff member introduced themselves along with the NE street they live on. Now... is that going to happen at Rainbow? Doubt it.

Yelp
Great local store that has everything you would need. Friendly knowledgeable staff that is always willing to help. Fresh Produce and meat department with great selections on everything throughout the store.

Yelp
I wouldn't do my regular grocery shopping here (I live in Como not NE, but still), but I originally came here in search of good perogies and found a few other gems. They have a surprisingly good meat counter and brat selection and I randomly found a massive bag of hush puppies, which I haven't seen/had in years, super cheap. Also, their ice cream seems better priced than others and they actually have a decent, albeit small, selection. Bonus for having a liquor store inside that's actually pretty good, especially for its size. Not sure how they got away with that. It's an awkward place and pretty small but I come back for the those perogies and a few others things they do oddly well.

Yelp
Great little grocery store. Has just about everything you need in a pinch and a few surprises too. Check out their smoked meats and locally made spring rolls and pierogis.

Yelp
I'm surprised this place gets such good reviews. It's a dump, in one of the worst neighborhoods of Minneapolis. Felt unsafe simply going in there.

Yelp
Sentyrz bills itself as a neighborhood ethnic market of sorts. For what I can tell, it is ethnic in that it sells polish sausages in the meat case, but otherwise, it's a pretty crappy little grocery store. Now don't get me wrong - I live around the corner from Sentyrz and I'm very happy to be able to trot down to the market and get some eggs or bread or whatever I'm out of. But the quality of the food just isn't very good. And the prices are high - which I would support, since it's a family business, if they actually sold quality food. The produce comes wrapped - in plastic! On Styrofoam trays! Yuck. What Sentyrz does have going for them is that you can find really strange products and no-name brands that make for an entertaining half-hour of browsing if you're looking for something to do. And why Sentyrz gets any stars is because they have a liquor store *in* the grocery store. They got grandfathered in! They have a decent selection of beer and a couple rows of curious wine selections (I went in there a few weeks ago to by beer and looked at the wines on a whim - they had several bottle of a cult wine that sells out immediately at places like Surdyks. Whoda thought?) Prices are a little higher than say, Chicago Lake, but I love being able to buy beer and brats at the same place (points for their polish sausage BTW. Tasty) If you for some reason were to drive to Sentyrz (it's not exactly a desination), park haphazardly in the half-circle drive out front. That's what everyone else does, and it feels good to ignore the parking spots.

Yelp
I work nearby and very much appreciate the selection of healthy items at Sentryrz. I frequently get an Amy's frozen vegetarian item for lunch, but sometimes it is yogurt (good selection), V-8, mineral water, or other items. Always welcoming, friendly service. A great neighborhood place.

Yelp
Great prices for two of my must haves in life - good meat and green chartreuse.

Yelp
Fun little grocery store located on the corner of 16th and 2nd, meat selection wonderful, freezer section is moderately stock with items ranging from frozen vegetables to pork neck bones. I go here for my simple needs most times and sometimes you even find gems here. They have these wings and nuggets THEY make in the back, and I've love almost all the flavors (The Honey BBQ was questionable and waiting for Parmesan Garlic :) ). But if you're looking to do some quick shopping and stay convenient to the neighborhood, Sentyrz is your stop, did I mention they have a liquor store inside... with a decent selection...

Yelp
Solid neighborhood Grocery. Surprisingly good beer and liquor selection at good price. Got curious after reading some reviews and tried the axe-head 24 oz cans of malt liquor one night, bad choice, I guess I can't handle all those hops in the 11% ABV beverage... Pleased to see that many fine bevs are offered, this is America after all.

Yelp
I suggest that Sarah's review is more than a little heavy handed. Sentyrz is unique in a number of ways. It is a thriving small neighborhood supermarket that has been in existence and in the same family since 1923. The prices are about what you should expect from an independent this size. It's not a "crappy little...store." A couple of co-workers told me about this store and their sausages which they have been making themselves for years. Their hot dogs and brats I would rate among the best that I've found. I do remember seeing some produce in plastic wrapped styrofoam. Big deal. You can find the same thing at Byerly's. The building was rebuilt. Check out the new sculpture outside. You can also find beer from all over the world inside. The rating takes into account the size of the store, what you can find inside, and the neighborhood. It has done well for itself. Be a little fair. George in Minnetonka

Yelp
Fancy Sentyrz is not. But it is convenient for us NEsters and the staff if friendly as all giddyup. Their sausage is awesome and the butcher is very helpful Ask him what cuts he has in back and you may surprised by a cheap custom cut primo piece of pork or beef. They've also added quite a few organic and healthier items to their shelves and the freezer lately. Ask them to stock something and chances are you will see it there next week. Of course, the cherry on top is the liquor store, which has some surprising wines. The produce is not great, but has improved.

Yelp
I know that come winter I'll be frequenting Sentyrz even more frequently than I am now as a resident who lives in the vicinity. It's nothing to look at as far as the inside goes, but you're here to buy foodstuffs, beer/booze and probably have a nice little chat with one of the friendly employees here and there. While they aren't overflowing with health-conscious items I get my Bolthouse Green Goodness and avocados for noticeably less than other grocery stores in the area and ditto on the Athenos Greek Yogurts (the only good yogurts are those that keep in the fat/flavor), which on a recent occasion were on sale and I ended up doing a bit of hoarding. Unlike some fancy prepared items at Lund's which purport to be prepared with fresh ingredients only to be tainted with cheap nasty partially-hydrogenated oils, I can feel better about buying the Shurfine Oreo knockoffs which surprisingly enough are free of the stuff. All in all, considering the convenience factor, selection of goods, and decent hours, I'm willing to tilt my review up to 5 stars.

Shannon L.

Yelp
I think Sentyrz is a great little store and has everything there that you may need! Best meat department around with awesome prices!
