What a post-war supermarket used to be. Family operated, local, not a warehouse, but pretty good selection, and carry some small local and premium as well as ethnic stuff. Unpretentious, diverse clientele and employees, a looser atmosphere than the chains, real conversations, workers can kid each other and not have someone tell them they aren't fitting the corporate image.
Probably better than NE Lunds at rotating perishables and which uses misleading and inconsistent dating schemes.
I'm especially impressed that if you need the manager, they give you to the owner. I had to speak to him twice about safety issues (neither within his control) : A brand of bottled red cabbage had a lot that was barely cooked and missing the vinegar - a setup for botulism. Unlike the chains, he understood the problem instantly and was already having the staff pull the items before I ended the call. The other - a charitable aluminum can drop he allowed a charity to set up at the end of his parking lot had been colonized by yellow jackets, and he was similarly proactive.
What a business should be: A friendly, unpretentious place, with an owner that takes pride in the business and is professional and safety conscious.
