The 25 Essential Montreal Sandwiches

"It sounds basic —egg, lettuce, tomato, and cheese on a brioche bun —but when the egg is fried to perfection, the cheese melted just enough, and the tomato and lettuce are fresh and crisp, it’s anything but basic. To really level up, order the deluxe with ham, pickles, and mustard." - Erinn Blicher, Eater Staff

The Best Cafes in Montreal - Eater Montreal

"This café-surf shop offers a hefty food menu featuring halloumi toast, breakfast sausage biscuits, energy balls, buttermilk pancakes, fruit bowls, and one hell of a cheeseburger. It has a second location inside the Nordelec Building in Pointe-Saint-Charles." - Daniel Bromberg, Eater Staff

Great coffee (SP’s recco), BEST breakfast sandwich (egg cheese spicy mayo tomato lettuce on a squishy griddled bun). Nice spot to work but gets really busy.

Google
Even though there’s always a lineup but its one of my favorite local brunch spots. They provided great coffee. And the food is amazing. We love the Pancake with the maple syrup and butter on top, such a good combination. And i love the halloumi toast, it comes with toast, grilled cheese and mixed veggies on top. It gives the perfect tastes with their dressings. Also the tomato soup is really good. So happy that we can finally stop by at this place.

Google
We loved it so much we went back-to-back days for breakfast. The pancakes were even more delicious than they look! No matter what time of day you, you must get the pancakes. It’s big enough to be shared for two and worth going just for them. The avocado toast is delicious as well. The plates are more than if enough, so come hungry or be prepared to share. Aside from the food, the drinks were your classic cafe options and delicious. If you can squeeze in dessert, I recommend the chocolate chip cookie. Overall, our favorite breakfast place in Montreal, and we will be back.

Google
Yes there’s a line and all the tables are taken, but somehow the line moves quickly and seats open up. The varied menu is delicious and such good value that it sometimes feels like inflation missed September. The pancakes, cashew chicken salad, salted chocolate chip cookie, or nourishing bone broth are some of my favorites. The coffees and matches are especially good, hot or iced. Also, they’re thoughtfully open on Monday!

Google
The most amazing way to start a visit to my home-city with a new favourite brunch spot. My partner and I came here for brunch. There was a line-up outside but it moved at a good pace, and once inside it was a bit chaotic. The seating system was unique and we weren’t sure we were going to stay, but we decided to stick it out. We are so glad we did. The food was absolutely to die for - we each had avocado toast with added smoked salmon (OMG) and we shared pancakes which were moist, fluffy, and mouth-watering. The cortados we had were yummy and the iced matcha latte was delicious. The staff are so kind. We struck up a conversation with barista Sonara (I hope that’s correct), and that catapulted an amazing first day back home (they mentioned Jazz fest was on, and we managed to see Nas). Everything about our experience here was so memorable - the food of course, the staff, and the vibrant energy with Montreal charm. Very worth the wait and seating system. We love it so much we bought merch. You NEED to check this place out. We can’t wait to come back.

Google
One of my favourite local brunch spots. Love the pancakes and breakfast sandwich. Honestly every item I’ve tried on the menu really hit the spot. Only complaint is the ridiculously long line on the weekends and limited seating as well. Going there has to be a time investment in the mornings which is honestly be a deterrent.

Pooja Chandrasekharan

Google
My go to brunch place. I’ve had the best tomato soup with grilled cheese here. The place is a bit crowded so be prepared to stand in line, but it is so worth it. I have also had the avocado toast and halloumi toast, which is also really good.

Zoey Choi

Google
Foods are amazing the toast and pancakes🤌🏻(+ add up chicken⭐️!!). Drinks are lower than average☹️(can be optional). We needed to line up for 15mins outside, and get inside order right away. It was too warm with a crowd. If you have a bite of food you will understand tho

Google
September Cafe delivered on quality and pricing, making my visit enjoyable. I’d seen long lines before and wondered if it was overhyped, but the experience justified its popularity—though the wait might not be essential. The banana bread was outstanding, and the latte, chocolate cookie, and sandwich déjeuner were all well-made. Seating was tight due to constant crowds, but the space was thoughtfully decorated and efficient. No regrets—good food, fair prices, and a nice vibe. I’ll be back to try more from the menu, confident it’ll be just as good.

Yelp
Cute cafe with decent amount of seating indoor and outdoor. Tried the halloumi toast which was really good and filling. The bread was really soft and the flavors came together well. Also tried the lemonade which was not that sweet

Yelp
Definitely packed if you go on the weekend but really enjoyed the breakfast sandwich. I want to go back and try more food next time I visit.

Yelp
Fabulous experience trying September cafe. Food was really fresh and drinks were so good. The breakfast sandwich was super delicious! The pancakes are an absolute MUST. The fluffiest pancakes I've ever had. Beware, this place gets really packed on the weekends so try it during the week if you can!
google avatar

Julian H.

Yelp
It was packed! The place seems to be very very popular. It was filled with friends going on lunch, having a nice time. The line was not so bad and while the place was very full and there were not many seating options it still had a lot of tables, so in a less packed day you might find plenty of space to sit The matcha in here is great. You can feel and taste the matcha but is not bitter and the milk doesn't overwhelm it. One of my fav spots for matcha so far.
google avatar

Yelp
Worth the drive to Saint-Henri for the food alone. I got the breakfast sandwich and the quinoa chicken salad to share and it was so good. It almost makes no sense why this cafe would have such delicious food but they do and I highly recommend. I ate on their patio and it was in the sun which made for the most pleasant lunch in the sun. Great prices for amazing food with great products displayed for purchase and great aesthetics for instagram pictures. The coffee glass was so pretty!
google avatar

Matt A.

Yelp
A very charming, modest cafe serving wonderful, delicious, abundant food and lovely coffee. Some of the best, most fluffy, yet dense and very filling pancakes we've ever had. Very fast and very friendly service - we were in and out in 35 minutes.
google avatar

Jan G.

Yelp
This place really leans into the hip millennial dream of owning a cool little coffee shop, and it works. Everything was delicious - the Avocado toast, the pancakes, and the breakfast deluxe are huge stand outs. It's no wonder why the place was so busy!
google avatar

Jack R.

Yelp
Loved this surf themed cafe, awesome vibes. Felt right at home. The avo toast was on point and the flat white incredible. If I lived in MTL, I'd be here all the time! I wanna come back and try the classic pancakes

Yelp
September Surf is a cafe located on Notre-Dame in the Little Burgundy are of Montreal. The ambiance is somewhat of collective communal experience. People sit in close proximity to each other and it feels very friendly and inviting. A lot of people were doing some work on there laptops and it seemed to be a place of comfort for many which goes well with the name. That surf culture is evident in the space. The menu was not huge yet there is something for everyone. If you would love to indulge, you can get the pancakes. They were the best ones I've ever had and I've been back multiple times just to have that fluffy goodness. There are great breakfast sandwiches as well. I also had the chia bowl which was French and energizing. The lattes are perfect and I am a big latte lover so I don't take that lightly. Overall, an amazing place to return to. They also have amazing magazines for purchase and great merch to add on as well.
google avatar

Yamilex T.

Yelp
Over all friendly people, amazing coffee and good food. One of the best breakfasts truly, pancakes seem to be topped with salt and it surprisingly works. I also got the matcha cookie, it was good just some bites were a tad too sweet. I would get the bone broth every single morning if I could. Only down side is how crazy busy it is! I had to hover over people for a seat

Lilly H.

Yelp
Super busy! But definitely some of the best cafe drinks and food I've ever had. If you go, try to get there right at opening or early on Sundays. This is the only time I'd say $15+ for toast is 100% worth it. The creaminess of the avocado toast was unreal and the halloumi was absolutely delicious. Would definitely visit again!

Yelp
It's one of my favorite cafes in Little Burgundy, well located on Notre-Dame, this place is really nice to chill. I think that they don't offer wifi so you shouldn't bring your laptop to work there. They also close quite early in the weekend. I took matcha latte the last time I went there, it was great! The vibe at September Surf is lovely, the staff super friendly. I used to come here for some Th3rdwave coffee tasting events, it's a place that I recommend you to come and hang out with your friends. Enjoy your coffee!

Yelp
Cool, hip café in Little Burgundy. It's directly across the street from L'Gros Luxe and a few doors down from the Joe Beef empire. Came here on a Tuesday afternoon. Busy but lots of space to snag a seat. Don't miss out on the backyard; complete with a hammock to chill in. Love it! Even the outside seating (in front of the entrance) is cool and comfy. Inside is bright and open. Coffee is from Anchored Coffee (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia). They had coffee, summer drinks and a couple light food options. Like how prices already include tax. - 50/50 ($4.00) - half lemonade, half tea. Refreshing and light. One of their four summer drinks available. They even make surf boards! Dope. Great spot to chill.

Yelp
Stopped here twice in a few days, expected little but was blown away. First time grabbed a BLT on challah that was epic. Tomatoes were so fresh and tasteful I wanted to keep the taste sensations in my mouth and I just savored the food experience. Very chill and laid back experience. Another day I grabbed a morning order of blueberry pancakes which may have been the best BB pancakes of my life. Three hefty pancakes with big, bold fresh blueberries. I'm a big blueberry lover (pretty much every day for breakfast) so I literally was freaking out at how delicious these were. Only downer is it's a small kitchen and if it's crowded, food comes out slowly. I waited 20 minutes and 12 minutes approximately for food but it was worth the wait. Chairs aren't the greatest either but at end of the day if you're looking for great food at reasonable prices, this is a wonderful place.

Yelp
Drove to Saint-Henri to try this out and it did not disappoint: had the deluxe breakfast sandwich and it is worth the drive. Brioched bun, egg, meat, spicy mayo, pickles. Decently priced for the quality and quantity. Coffee is great. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Courtney K.

Yelp
The coffee and food are both amazing here. And the vibe is perfect -- excellent music, kind staff. I really enjoy coming here to get some work done and eat a healthy, nourishing meal. One thing to note, though, is weekends and holidays are laptop free.
google avatar

Natacha G.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in Little-Burgundy area. Their coffees are great, its a cool place to go have a coffee and a bite to eat. Really relaxed setup, music is also really good and fits in with the surfer vibe. They also sell merchandise, tshirts, hats... Overall really friendly place, tends to get crowded around 12-1 but they have outdoor seats as well.

Yelp
I've wanted to try September Surf Café since they opened a few months ago, never being able to catch them at the right time. Today, however, September and I were finally in sync and I had the opportunity to enjoy an iced latte with cononut milk. It was strong (I kindly asked the barista to add some more milk, please) and good. The quantity served was generous too. The service was courteous. I sat at the front of the coffee shop, right by the window, enjoying the view of the outside and the inside simultaneously. The decor is very pretty, simple and organic, with an emphasis on the vast space they allow to remain empty. The sunlight entering the shop by their large storefront windows in the morning is almost magical! At the back of the shop, they sell clothing, mugs and other items which, I think, might be surf related. I went to take a look, I was not sure, and wasn't particularly interested enough to ask. I went back to enjoy my latte instead, ha! For your information, all their prices include tax. They also accept debit, credit and cash. Overall a nice place with a nice and clean ambiance; I recommend.

Yelp
Great avocado toast and matcha latte

Annabelle N.

Yelp
Super cute place close to the metro but did not even get the chance to taste anything. I asked for lemonade and they didn't have anymore then asked for a coffee and the espresso machine was not working.. Which means we couldn't even get any kind of coffee. A coffee shop that can't sell coffee...
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I was very pleased by my breakfast and coffee as my friends and I made our way touring through Montreal. We ran into it walking on the street, and from the outside it looked like it had a super chill vibe so we decided to check it out. I can say I am glad we did, because I absolutely loved how fresh and healthy everything was. I honestly didn't even want to eat it at first because they did such a good job preparing it. Kudos to the staff working back there. I was so pleased with it, that I even went the extra mile to share your cafe on my Adventure Blog at https://whereismikenow.travel.blog/. Feel free to check it out!
google avatar

Claire L.

Yelp
Love this place. Great vibes! Get yourself over here ASAP. Really cool group of guys behind the bar serving up great coffee and now amazingly curated beer and wine. This shop doubles as a surf board making studio...and that is just plain cool. Went here on a Saturday around 5pm, shop was full but not packed. We got a spot right in front of this glass window looking into their studio space where they make surf boards. Was feeling a bit peckish so was super excited to see that they serve up small appetizers beyond the classic cafe grub of cookies and croissants. Got the cheesy toast, and was beyond pleased. Also treated myself to a pint of Beau's Organic on tap. My friend got a pint of Brasserie Harricana beer. Overall, these guys know what's up. For the winter season they had a projector playing up on the wall of a fireplace. But, not just any fireplace.... it featured a sleeping dog in front of the fireplace. All about it!!

Sabrina C.

Yelp
Long wait but the pancakes are incredible. I found the prices are reasonable for coffee and pancakes because normally brunch is like 20$ a plate. Would go back
google avatar

Serge N.

Yelp
No fizzy water, but good and cheap cold brew coffee. Most patrons come here to read, relax and get some work done. It's pretty lit (quite literally) and the terrace in the back is quiet. Oh, they make a delicious BLT breakfast sandwich on English muffins
google avatar

Tammy M.

Yelp
My favest when-in-Little Burgundy/ St Henri area morning coffee stop. Excellent coffee, baked things, and surf board maker with lovely westcoast vibes. Great ambiance and people Go make a surf board! Shaper Studios. http://shaperstudiosmtl.com/english#welcome

Yelp
My friend and I are planning to visit as many cafés of Montreal. The name of this café is so unique. When we got in, the decor is very modern, spacious. Love it because it's not cluttered. Simple decoration such magazine of surfing and odd shape plants. We ordered our food. The servers were so nice and friendly. My cappuccino was very delicious. The texture was creamy, giving a smooth feeling. My sandwich was very tasty too. When we were done, our table was cleaned up. The waitress was sweet and she offered us water. Very nice place to try!
google avatar

Peter R.

Yelp
Was hoping to get out of the house for a couple hours to do some work as it says this place is 'good for working' and open on the weekend. Unfortunately after ordering a coffee and finding a seat I also found this very small sign stating that weekends are not a good place for working. Although I appreciate the concern for creating a place for socializing, I also feel a bit burned for wasting time and money here. Coffee and ambiance were good, and might come back...just not work work
google avatar

Max T.

Yelp
Cappuccino was stronger than many. Not cream and softness. Hard and sharp approach. I appreciate the electricity. I forget the tipping. I feel shame.
google avatar

Sababa S.

Yelp
I loved this cafe. It's minimal and clean. They have a long table in the middle which is "laptop-free" zone. They also have bar stools and other tables where people can work and a bench for sitting. I would come here for talking and chilling rather than for work.
google avatar

Max S.

Yelp
Great for their breakfast sandwiches and especially their all-out avocado toast, and their coffee is quite good too! Sad to say that it isn't the best place to hunker down ever though, so if that's what you're looking for from a cafe, September probably isn't your bet. But for a takeout cortado and a snack, you can't do much better in Little Burgundy/St Henri.
google avatar

Priscilla L.

Yelp
I've been wanting to come here since they opened, so I was glad when my friend suggested this place to meet up. With big windows, open space, and a good vibe, this is such an inviting place. The staff was friendly and we got to meet the owner quickly while one of the staff explained to us the meaning of "September Surf". A lot of people here will leave the city to go West during September to surf. They have a surfboard workshop open to everyone so for all the surfers, go check it out. Also, part of the café sells shirts and other surfing related stuff. I had a latte and a chocolate chip zucchini bread. The latte was perfectly done and so was the bread - not too sweet, moist on the inside and lightly crispy on the outside. All their prices includes taxes which I love so no more surprise when you pay your bill. :)
google avatar

Jolie C.V. H.

Yelp
Small no-nonsense kinda cafe. Modest and minimal decor but that doesn't seem to bother their patrons and I can't say I blame them. Service was quick and friendly. I actually got several smiles from various employees. Imagine that! Not very common these days, I'm afraid. The place was full and everyone seemed to be working on something important, laptop, notebooks, etc. With limited space to sit I decided to get a chai latte to go. Fantastic choice! Smooth, creamy, and spicy. Will be back to try their coffee. Bet it's out of sight....
google avatar

Gab G.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick drink and snack with s friend, though I only ended up getting a chocolate chip cookie. Anyway, it was delicious, and my friend enjoyed her tea. The barista was closing up, but he let us hang out for a while, which was nice.
google avatar

Maria V.

Yelp
Yet another cute and cozy cafe opens in Little Burgundy. As a a rare non-coffee drinker I walk in searching for the hot chocolate. To which I can't see it being mentioned on their board. Disappointing! Till the staff was kind to let me know they so serve it. Wonderful! Sadly, there were no places available to sit, or anything left to eat. This was at 2:30pm on a Wednesday. Surprising and disappointing. The place in general is very cute, well lit and lovely lively ambiance. As for the staff, I can't say I'm fond of it. Perhaps it was a bad day. They seemed a bit disoriented, and confused. Strange! Having said all this. Cafe September didn't leave too much of a bitter/sour taste just yet. So I will give it another try. After all, I'm quite fond of cute, cozy, and comforting cafes. Cafe September seems to be on the right path for it. I hope next time you impress me a tad more.
google avatar

Noha G.

Yelp
Stopped by to meet a friend in the AM on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance and coziness of this café. Part café and part clothing store, September Surf is a cool place to hang out over coffee/tea/a snack. Their grilled cheese is yummy and their prices/service is great. So why just 3 stars? Because their seating arrangement is uncomfortable as it gets! Otherwise, a cute little place to stop by the next time you're looking to grab a quick little something!
google avatar

Katarina M.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee, friendly staff, comfy atmosphere with lots of different seating options. Salmon bowl flavorful and full of veggies. Terrace in the back. Chill vibes. Would hang out in again any time. Cute merchandise for sale, There is one outlet near the front if you need to charge. Takes credit card.
google avatar

Shazia K.

Yelp
September Surf Cafe is one of the first cafes I explored this summer. To be honest, it was the cafe's name that drew me in, and once I walked in I knew I was about to have a good experience. The service was great. I was given a free cookie (which was delicious) when they mixed up my order. The food and coffee was good too. There is enough space for you to sit and chat with friends and another table for when you have work to do. A nice little place to catch up with a friend over coffee.
google avatar

Lucinda F.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of this place. Coffee is great, music is good, staff is always on point, happy-friendly... and the food is always good. The cheese toast and soup is usually my favourite thing to order. The fun thing is that the soup always changes, and if you feel like a salad instead, well they can make one for you easily. The only thing is that if you want to work... make sure you have some battery on your phone, laptop or tablet... They have only one plug and it's usually used by someone. But overall, if you are meeting someone or just want to grab a coffee before work... It's the place to go.
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
Very nice little cafe in a surf atmosfere. Mitch fixed a ding in one of my surfboards. He did a great job. So if you need to fix one around Montreal, he's your guy! They also have a shape room and shape lessons. The coffee was good too !
google avatar

Cally C.

Yelp
Pretty cool space. It has a tiny Hollister/A&F vibe. There's a little workshop room where they make surfboards. The cafe attracts an interesting crowd, very few business people and a good number designers, photographers, students, and more. The cortado was not bad. The london fog was pretty good, aromatic and not too sweet. The staff was friendly, seemed like a pretty cool group of people. This place is also close to some hot restaurants such as Joe Beef (2 minute walk away) and Le Vin Papillon (less than 5 minute walk).
google avatar

Hannah B.

Yelp
Under caffeinated, on my way to work, as I often am, I stumbled into September Surf a little skeptical- this place had pretentious little burgundy written all over it. Long story short, I order a "breakfast cake" and a latté and somehow manage to spill my drink all over the bar before I can get the lid on. The barista immediately begins mopping up the mess while I'm frantically apologizing. He smiles and talks about one time busting an expensive plate on the job and really, it's no big deal. While he's making me a (free!) replacement drink a handsome patron approaches me and begins to politely stammer that I look great. I step outside and start noshing on the awesome breakfast "cake". Dayum, it's going to be a good day. The space is pretty textbook third-wave hipster-chique and the coffee is good but I'd contend nothing beyond your standard anchor beans coffee shop. I think I still prefer the product at Lili et Oli down the street but the service and space are likely the best for a sit-down (and potentially getting some work done!) in the neighbourhood.
google avatar

Roxane K.

Yelp
Super friendly staff and tasty pastries. I haven't tried their coffee yet but the 50/50 (lemonade and tea) was perfect and so refreshing on a hot day! Don't hesitate to try the hamac in the backyard :)
google avatar

S B.

Yelp
Nice place, I quite like the feeling and the decor. The staff is friendly and of course the coffee's great. The little terrace in the back is like a little hidden gem so check it out too. Good to note: possibly the best mocha in town and they have coconut milk too. :-)
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
Stopped in today after seeing the rad reviews and the pic of the cheesy bread! Lol I got some work done this morning and enjoyed my Americano with Cheesy Bread + Arugula. The staff was friendly, the cafe is bright and the vibes are good. That's always a plus for me! Thanks guys!
google avatar

Alex Catherine L.

Yelp
Great spot! The decor is nice, the coffee is delicious, the staff is friendly. The only downside is that it gets quite crowded and sometimes you can't find a place to sit... the cute little terrasse makes up for it.
google avatar

Roberto C.

Yelp
This place has quickly become my favourite cafe and hangout in the area. Try the matcha green tea latte...it's amazing!
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
Wonderful coffee spot in the area that also happens to make surf boards in the back. They'll soon start a brew bar where you can learn a bit more on how to make your favourite drinks and about coffee, in general. The space is a awesome to work in and they've got a super delicious Asian-style bowl for lunch. Check it out. Or be sad you didn't.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
The music is a little loud if you go there to study when you really have to focus but other than that coffee is

Honest R.

Yelp
I love their iced café latté - the best! But for some reason, the to-go one does not taste as good as the one if you have it "for here". I love coming here to work, but the downside is their wifi never seems to work on my device. Hence, I go to September cafe if I have non-wifi work to do. I head to Starbucks across the street if I need wifi.
