14 Hottest Restaurants in Charlotte, February 2025

"Chef Ammalu Saleh of Serengeti Kitchen puts Tanzanian flavors in the spotlight at Uptown’s 7th Street Market. From the tender chicken in a biryani marinade down to the tamarind juice, the spices, from cardamom to chili, pack a punch. The Swahili plate of fluffy coconut rice, chicken, collards, and plantains is a must-get. The $20 and below prices are a nice touch, too." - Kayleigh Ruller

Dog-Friendly Cafe Boris & Horton Prances Into East Village Today | Eater NY

"In Harlem, Serengeti Kitchen is a restaurant where chef Doughba Caranda-Martin III makes food from Liberia and fills the space with his art, creating a "beautiful place" to wait for food; notable dishes mentioned include zucchini and bunapi mushroom soup and a roasted guinea hen half-submerged in a deep, mellow stew of sweet African peppers." - Serena Dai

Google
I ordered several dishes from Serengeti Kitchen for Thanksgiving and everything was absolutely amazing. The food was delicious and everyone we hosted was genuinely impressed. The samosas were generously filled, flavorful, and a huge hit. The chapatis were soft and pillowy, just perfect. The pilau rice was fluffy and delicious, and the mandazis were sweet, fresh, and beautifully made. We’ll definitely be ordering from them again — highly recommended!

WOW!!! This was our first experience trying Tanzanian food. We were excited to try and the very nice young man gave us his recommendation and we tried it. Swahili Chicken Biryani and Samosas were perfection. The flavors were absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to bring my friends and family to try this.

This was the best food I had in awhile and probably the best vendor at 7th street market. My family was hesitant but once they saw my lamb plate they went and got food from Serengeti Kitchen too! A must try.

Google
I loved it, plain & simple. Saw this place being revived on TikTok, and I wanted to try.. I was not disappointed in doing so. The food was seasoned well, with a pretty large portion (see pics below 📸.) Also for myself the sanitation score is important. They have a A. 👍🏾

What an amazing experience! Ordered the food to go but the quality didn’t miss. Bold flavors, bursting with soul. The service was beyond satisfactory. Ticket time was as promised. Highly recommend this one

Google
I needed to get something quick to get back to my meeting and they were the only vegan plate I could find in the market. Ordered the Swahili Vegan Plate and almost started speaking Swahili and I don't know the language. First of all the food looked tasty. The beans and collards and cabbage were all seasoned with care. Only thing you may need to add is hot sauce if you prefer.. I will be back tomorrow and it is out of my way but that is how I like to eat and it is good clean tasty food. Check them out!!!!

Google
RUN do not walk to Serengeti Kitchen! This is hands down some of the best food that we’ve had in Charlotte! We had the lamb plate and chicken Briyani plate- both were amazing. The flavors were delicious, there are generous portions and best of all you can tell that the food was cooked with love. This was a 10/10 experience and we cannot wait to go back!

Google
This was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I got the Swahili chicken biryani plate and the meat was so tender and delicious, I was already thinking about the next time I'd come eat here! The beans paired really well with the chicken. I would come back here 10000 times. So so so yummy and flavorful!!! The service was also amazing! Wish I could give 10 stars!!

Yelp
An unexpected find in Charlotte since it serves Tanzanian food which is rare in the United States. I had the grilled lamb bites Swahili plate which was delicious and elevated the dining scene in Charlotte. I wished the portions were bigger for the price but otherwise was delicious.

Yelp
I just savored the last of my Swahili chicken bowl, and I can't wait to be able to have more! The portion is large and flavors were amazing. Heat, but not too much, nothing over or under done w regards to cooking and flavors. I can't wait to try more of their dishes! You don't have to be an adventurous eater to enjoy this! Highly recommend!

Yelp
This is probably the best healthier option at 7th Street Market. The Swahili plate is very filling and flavorful. The food is sort of a cross between Indian and African food.

Yelp
Great authentic Swahili food located inside the market at 7th st. I also ordered side of chapati flaky and delicious. Will come back. The lamb bites, rice and beans , plantain and rice were cooked to perfection with a little spice.

Yelp
Delicious! There was a little spice/heat to the Serengeti chicken. Oh my gosh, it was fantastic!

Yelp
I was promptly greeted when approaching. The menu was not overwhelming, yet had enough options for meat eaters and non-meat eaters (Vegans ). The prices are reasonable, the food was very flavorful and plentiful (had enough leftovers for second meal). They validate parking at the connected garage (up to 2 hours). Seating was not an issue even on an unusually busy early Saturday afternoon at The Market on 7th St. I will be returning multiple times in the near future.

Yelp
Fresh delicious and perfect for a rainy night. Real home cooking. Authentic flavors! Everything was perfectly done!

Yelp
The food is amazing. Everything was nicely seasoned. The staff was super friendly. I ordered one of the combination plates which included chicken, coconut rice, beans, and some collard greens. I wish I would've taken pictures to display the food.
