Serenity (Zhongzheng)

"The first Sichuan vegetarian restaurant in Taiwan is jointly helmed by a chef specialising in vegetarian cooking and another well versed in Sichuan cuisine. As half of the shop is enclosed in glass panes, it feels airy and bright. Must-try items include basil-scented vegetarian crisp tripe, bean sprouts in truffle pâté, steamed stinky tofu, fried king oyster mushrooms and Gong Bao vegetarian chicken. No garlic or onion is used in any dish." - Michelin Inspector

5 Michelin-recommended Restaurants In Taipei For Delicious Vegetarian Food

"Basil and mock “pork uterus” at SerenitySerenityBib Gourmand, MICHELIN Guide Taipei 2018Serenity is Taiwan’s only vegetarian Sichuan restaurant. It ticks onion and garlic off its list of ingredients. The owner has been following a vegan diet after converting to Buddhism, but his preference for strong flavours inspired him to cook vegetarian dishes as if they contained meat, and that became the direction of his venture since Serenity opened 12 years ago. Basil “pork uterus”, the restaurant’s signature dish, actually employs king trumpet mushroom as a substitute. A rarely seen and skill-driven creation, it has the fungus velveted in water before shredded and rolled by hand to resemble its meat counterpart. The mushroom is then marinated in master stock, deep-fried and stir-fried upon order. The vegetarian Gong Bao chicken hardly looks or tastes any different than the original. The classic napa cabbage salad with tofu receives a luxurious update with black truffle." - MICHELIN Guide Taipei Editorial Team

Loved every dish we ordered. Tofu dish was super comforting. Truffle fried rice was a flavour bomb. Salad was slightly tangy and sweet - delicious. Eggplant was melt in your mouth. Great service and friendly and respectable staff. This spot is great for vegans as most dishes were vegan. We wanted fried king oyster mushrooms but they didn’t have any / ran out at the time. For the truffle fried rice, just ask for no egg. But we did wonder, what other dishes that contain egg can be made with no egg? Highly recommend!

The hot goods tasted well. But the cold food like the sesame sauce noodles was no good. I had diarrhea and my husband has diarrhea and vomiting 4 times. Recommend to order hot food only.

A pretty good vegan restaurant. Don’t come here alone because portion size is generous. The tea and sticky rice cake dessert that come with your meal are delicious. I really liked the sesame noodles, it was packed with flavour. I also liked the cauliflower girdle, its flavours are subtle but I kept reaching out for more. My mum loved the eggplants cooked with basil which we ate over the fragrant vegetables rice. I think if I wasn’t constantly comparing it to my favourite vegan Szechuan in London I would have had an even lovelier time.

I can see why it got Michelin recognition. Extremely tasty Chinese vegan food. *The cabbage with truffle, eggplant, fried rice, and spicy (slightly) chicken among our favorites! - Less so were the - Wanton, pork intestine, thin rice/glass noodle with cabbage.

The food was so good we came back a 2nd time on our trip. We had eggplant and chicken this time. The place was packed with people so we were lucky to be squeezed in at the last table. Just be sure to order a variety of dishes so the taste doesn’t become too redundant. For example, don’t order only fried food, make sure you get some noodles and vegetables in there and mix everything together. The flavors are enhanced when combined. Our favorite restaurant of our vacation!

Wow!! What an amazing experience! My husband (omni) and I enjoyed a very memorable meal at serenity restaurant. I w had the seitan and fungus, sweet and sour, chilli wontons, basil oyster mushrooms. Everything was a 10/10

There's a wide variety of options to choose from the menu. Everything was solid and delicious! Most memorable dishes were the vegetable fried rice (so good we got two orders), sashimi (how could it taste like real fish!? Incredible), stir fry eggplant, bamboo, and the cabbage stew. Really appreciated the staff's attentive service especially with my husband's dietary restriction for refined sugar. They made sure to specify which dishes had soy sauce and sugar. They also prepared a room for my family gathering of 11 which was lovely. One improvement needed is to take credit card! How can a Michelin guide restaurant with above average pricing not accept credit card? Good I brought enough cash!

From the cozy, clean atmosphere to the friendly service, this Michelin Guide vegetarian restaurant is to die for. All the dishes contained unique ingredients that harmonized all the flavors in each dish. We tried vegetarian chicken with special sauce, betel flower stir fry, eggplant and basil casserole, and vegetarian shark fin soup. The eggplant with basil melts in your mouth; the soup consists of different textures. I loved how we could choose portion sizes for each dish to try a variety of dishes. For this restaurant, it’s best to make a reservation since they’re quite busy instead of walking in. My only regret is not going a second time.
