Springwells Is Detroit’s Underrated Food Truck Corridor | Eater Detroit

"Next door, I discovered Sergio’s Empanadas, a trailer owned by Sergio Betancourt and his wife Diana Buitrago that turns out empanadas with either corn- or flour-based pastry filled with shredded or ground beef, pork, chicken, or shrimp; Buitrago, who is Venezuelan, told me they will soon begin serving food typical of Ecuador, where her husband is from." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
Just had my first sweet empanada with banana and dulce de leche. Not bad, but maybe too sweet on its own. Ate it with vanilla ice cream and it was good.

Andrea S.

Google
The guava empanada is a dessert! Fantastic. Also love the cheese and ham. Will definitely come back!

Google
Had a quick lunch here after flying in from Toronto and it’s really good. The empanadas were all very flavourful and delicious, with what tastes like an Italian twist (in the chimichurri sauce). I got their chicken pot pie, chicken and mushroom, and beef and potato flavours. All great. The pastry dough was perfect too. I just came back from Italy so I had to try their gelato too out of curiosity. I sampled the Italian classics (tiramisu, Stracciatella, and mango sorbet). I have to say the tiramisu tasted a bit artificially flavoured which was disappointing, and the straccciatella lacked flavour. I don’t blame the owner though, Italian quality chocolate chips, flavourings, and cream are hard to come by in North America. However, the mango sorbet was very delicious and flavourful, I could taste fresh mangoes. The other flavour I picked was the hazelnut crunch, and it was also surprisingly delicious. The hazelnuts were fresh, and tasted great. Would go back!

Google
Delicious!! Beef empanada combo with Greek salad 🥗 is a must!! Empanadas are baked and you can taste the freshness and quality of the products. Come here often, it never disappoints!! 🙌

Savannah S.

Google
The beef and cheese is my favorite! Flaky outside with a creamy and flavorful inside. And the Chimichurri is a must! It’s so delicious

Maria O.

Google
Amazing amazing amazing. Empanadas were DELISH and gelato OH MY GOD. You can bring your food down to the beach a few steps down. Dont miss it!

Rafferty B.

Google
Delicious Argentinian empanadas! The beef and cheese are my favorite, but you can't go wrong with any of the choices. They also sell their Alfajor cookies, which are a MUST!

Steve N.

Google
Whenever we're in Laguna Beach, we make it a point to stop by at Sergio's for their delish Empanadas and Chimichurri! The Empanadas are prepared Argentinian style with a variety of meat and veggie fillings. Slightly on the pricier side, probably due to the prime location, but the portion sizes are huge. You can even purchase frozen Empanadas to bake at home.

Yelp
Excellent food. I bought frozen empanadas and baked them at home for a party this Saturday afternoon. Got some chimichuri sauce, too.

Yelp
Food is basic but very good. The folks there are nice. Been going there for the last 10 years. Always a treat highly recommend.

Yelp
To be honest... I'm shocked this place has such a high rating on Yelp! I wanted to like these Empanadas so bad but they fell far short! It was small and clean. Service was fine. I bought my food through the Too Good To Go App. The empanada filling in the 4 I got were not good. Not sure why this place scores so well. I ended up tossing all the empanadas after a bite. Just greasy and flavorless. No sauce included. Seemed deep fried vs baked. I'd avoid this place.
google avatar

Erica C.

Yelp
Stopped by to try their empanadas. I ordered the beef empanada. It's a good size and full of filling inside. The beef was flavorful. Be sure to get the chimichurri sauce on the side. It compliments the empanada perfectly!
google avatar

Yelp
we tried several empanadas and a greek salad. beef and potato was the kids favorite. My favorite was the spicy pork empanada and the chicken pot pie empanada. the salsa was a decent size they thought the mac n cheese one was ok. the only issue with our visit was it was really hot in the shop so we definitely ate outside.
google avatar

Victoria T.

Yelp
Being from Argentina none of the fillings are traditional and $6 an empanada is a lot. I also ordered beef and there were raisins I am allergic to them which was my bad in not reading and assuming it would be a traditional Argentine beef empanada but when I asked the lady kindly if she could switch it out it was made into this unnecessary big deal and I was refused to have it switched. I guess I understand but I believe the customer service could be better. Was excited to see food from my home country but was quickly disappointed.

Yelp
So GOOD!! You can smell the empanadas from outside the sidewalk. It is a small place. There's some indoor seating inside along the wall or outdoor seating available. There's a lot of different fillings. I got the spicy beef and potatoes empanada. It was not spicy at all. Nice flavors. Kinda dry inside, but They have a house freshly-made chimichurri sauce that is DELICIOUS!!! They even sell the chimichurri sauce in jars to go! Adding the chimichurri sauce on the empanadas is PERFECTION! There is also a nice selection of gelato. It is pricey ($6 for a small cup), but ... Wow! The gelato is so good too! An added bonus is they also have vegan empanada options. There's something for everyone TIP: check in with YELP for $1 off any empanada.

Yelp
Great serving size and tastes authentic and amazing! This also gives many types of flavors for gelato and the empanadas are crispy and tasty. Behind the building there is parking and the indoors is clean and smells nice with kind staff that can give you samples!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place forever and after having a bad breakfast experience, we decided to cheer up with some empanadas. We ordered a spicy pork, beef, beef potato, guava cream cheese, and banana dulce de leche. They came with chimichurri and we also asked for lemon on the side. Pro tip: ask for the lemon!!! It really elevates the flavor. My fave was the spicy pork. I will say that I was expecting there to be a little more flavor and the beef was a little dry. As I mentioned, the lemon helps a lot!!! With the lemon, the flavor of the meat was brought out. We didn't get a chance to try the gelato or the Alfajores, but we'll come back for that. Service was great and restaurant was clean!

Yelp
If you like empanadas, this is a good place to visit. I ordered Beef & Cheese, Spicy Pork, and Chicken Pot Pie. The chicken was my favorite; I wish I had ordered more than 1. The beef & cheese was also really good; I'll definitely order it again. I wasn't impressed with the spicy pork, which I didn't find spicy or very flavorful; that's why I gave 4 Stars. Ordering is fast and easy. The staff very friendly. The food quickly ready and piping hot.

Yelp
Truly a hidden gem for the most amazing empanadas you will ever have in your life. They're so good, they often sell out - so we now know to come early to make sure they're not sold out! Amazing prices and the best empanadas in the world. If you want to treat yourself, head here.
google avatar

Yelp
Sweet potato and samosa veggie are the vegan options. The sweet potato was the better of the two with more flavor. The samosa veggie was more of a potato and pea mixture and I was missing a samosa flavor. The vegan dough was crispy and had a nice flake to it. The empanadas are hot out of the oven and we didn't wait long for them. They also serve gelato, at least ten different flavors.
google avatar

Nis J.

Yelp
I've searched far and wide for a legit empanada place. The empanadas here are amazing! The bread is soft as a croissant, which makes them different from everyone else. The banana Dulce de leche gelato is great too! Overall it's one of those local places you think you didn't need, but turns out to be the best decision of your lunch life

Yelp
I love this little empanada shop I used to come here years ago get their steak potato and they used to have a chicken curry empanada which they no longer have. We decided to have the sweet potato with bean empanada the dough was quite different , much thicker than the chicken and mushroom empanada both different both delicious... and piping hot these are some serious empanadas people.... They also have many different flavors of mouthwatering gelato, we didn't get it this time but we would come back just for the gelato... they actually had a dark chocolateI am just dying to try!

Yelp
We love Sergio's empanadas. The empanadas are large and fresh so they are worth the value. There are some interesting flavors but if you like the ingredients, you'll like the empanada. We rarely pass up a chance to eat here.

Yelp
Sergio's Empanadas l love the delicious smells coming from this cool eatery. The woman behind the counter heated up my 4 empanada's. She put them into a paper bag and sent me on my way with a smile. Another customer was also there picking up her order from TooGoodToGo I'll definitely be back! Thank you for providing such a wonderful and affordable meal God Bless you

Yelp
Very good empanada. Cool place to hang out. Walking distance to the beach. Baker was nice and humble. Always crowded.
google avatar

Yelp
Very delicious empanadas and also their home made chimchurri sauce is also very good.

Yelp
Okay- how much time do you have to read about my love affair with these empanadas?! I'm Argentinian and it's not an easy task to find BAKED, good, traditional empanadas anywhere! So when we stumbled across this modest store front with the awesome name, and were blown away by the delicious dough and the plentiful filling options, I had to share my new found love with you all! This is not a fancy place, it's casual, by the beach, slightly hidden away from the chaos of Laguna Beach and its tourist filled galleries and food establishments. It offers gelato, drinks like a yummy Thai tea, and a host of empanada offerings that are making my mouth water as I write this review! So, if you're ever down south and looking for a satisfying bite of goodness, give them a try. We actually went back a second weekend trip and bought their bake at home frozen ones and they are what I am ranting and raving about at the moment! Enough said- go give them a try I guarantee you will not be disappointed. My personal favorite is the spinach and cheese- absolute heaven on earth.

Lys G.

Yelp
Always a go-to when I'm in the area. I especially love the chicken pot pie empanadas. Definitely not a place to sit and vibe but they're always so kind to us! Accessible
google avatar

Lily T.

Yelp
Empanadas & Gelato, what a fun combo! Their empanadas were still warm & the pastry was pleasantly flaky, almost like a croissant. Che to come back to try their Gelato!
google avatar

Meena N.

Yelp
Nothing amazing but Good for a quick bite. Had the prosciutto and chicken and mushroom. We ordered the banana dulce le leche and we ube Gelato. Yummy.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
I was so impressed by the empanadas here! I got the Mac and cheese empanada and the chicken mushroom empanada. Each empanada was around $5, but they were very large and filling! The Mac and cheese was cheesy, which I appreciated because I've definitely had other Mac and cheese empanadas that have minimum cheese. The chicken mushroom was also tasty. Something unique that I loved here was the green dipping sauce! It added so much flavor to the empanada. You also get $1 off for checking in on Yelp. Definitively recommend this place for a quick bite to eat if you're in the Laguna Beach area!
google avatar

Leah L.

Yelp
It's a good to-go beach food, but lacking in flavor. I was told the chicken pot pie empanada is the most popular. I found it lacking in salt/herbs. I added the chimichurri sauce but it didn't do much for the overall flavor. Also got the mac and cheese empanada. Do not get this. I was hoping it would have nice melty cheese inside but it's almost like the cheese dried out inside & it just ended up tasting like a lot of dough. I ended up throwing away most of this one. Service was fine. It's not really a sit down place though they do have some seating inside and outside. We also got their lemon sorbet and butter maple gelato. That was nice.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Yummy, baked empanadas! This place was excellent. I had a chicken-mushroom and guava-cheese for dessert. The fillings were absolutely delish as was the chimichurri sauce they provide with the savory empanadas. Absolute best fast food lunch I've had in a loooong time!
google avatar

Penny J.

Yelp
Great little empanada shop near the beach in the heart of Laguna Beach. I first tried their empanadas at The Taste of Laguna but perhaps the flavor they served didn't wow me. I had a craving for empanadas recently and decided to give them another try and sample a variety of their different flavors to see which ones I liked the most. After trying the Beef & Potato, Chicken & Mushroom, Chicken Pot Pie, Spinach, and Spicy Pork, my absolute favorites are definitely 1. Beef & Potato (authentic empanada flavor) 2. Chicken & Mushroom (cheesy and savory) 3. Chicken Pot Pie (literally a delicious chicken pot pie filling wrapped in empanada dough). Those three were packed with delicious flavor and completely satisfied my empanada craving. I love that the baked and not fried empanadas come out piping hot from the oven and the free chimichurri sauce also makes the empanadas even tastier and we happily load it onto our food. Just remember to ask for a small spoon to scoop the sauce on to the empanadas. I've also tried great fried empanadas near LA but I love how these baked empanadas still taste delicious but aren't as heavy and greasy as the fried kind. I've also tried their gelato and my favorite flavor is the strawberry cheesecake.
google avatar

Valerie J.

Yelp
These empanadas are probably the best we have ever had! They are not too small, and the dough is soft and flaky. They have many different flavors to choose from. We had the beef and potato, and the chicken pot pie one. We will definitely come back and try more flavors in the future!
google avatar

Tina Y.

Yelp
Good empanadas, not the best I've ever had, but pretty good nonetheless. I love that they offer chimichurri with the empanadas too.
google avatar

Jessenia G.

Yelp
Cane here for an early dinner snack. We had a variety of empanadas: spicy beef, chicken and cheese, veggie, and chicken pot pie. They all cane out hot. The service was friendly. The restaurant has some wall seating and a few outdoor seats. They also serve gelato. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Brandon Z.

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick gelato and ended up grabbing two empanadas as well. Both empanadas were really tasty and the sauce that they give with the empanadas is amazing. We ordered mango, raspberry, cookies and cream, and cheesecake gelato and all were really tasty. We are on the patio and really enjoyed the food. Totally recommend for affordable food in Laguna.
google avatar

Marisa T.

Yelp
Really fresh Chimichurri sauce & empanadas! Delicious sangria & nice location. My chicken & mushroom empanada was delicious & so was the Greek salad. My husband had the beef potato & chicken pot pie, he said both were great. The banana dulce de leche we took to go was amazing! We'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Melina D.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Highly recommend trying the empanadas here- both were so tasty. Service was great, cozy vibes, clean environment, will be going back!

Yelp
What a great surprise on our walk to the beach for the day. Affordable, tasty, quick empanadas!! We tried many flavors & loved them all. We kept coming back each day we were there for more :)
google avatar

Ivet G.

Yelp
This has been the a tasteful experience! These empanadas are the best I've ever tasted! I got the mushroom cheese, beef, and beef potatoes and all of them were delicious! Definitely will be coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
4 for the empanada and 2 for the Gelato. Located on PCH, close to the Anita Street Beach entrance, the prices are reflective of the area. The Spunach and Chicken/Mushroom emanadas [$5.25 each) were delicious and filing. Crust was the perfect thickness, flaky, and held together. The gelato, on the other hand, was a total miss ($6 small / $6.50 med / $7 lrg). The icy and gummy texture didn't make for the right mouth feel. It distracted from the flavor and was a waste of money.
google avatar

Terri N.

Yelp
We have gotten takeout several times. Really enjoyed each of the empanadas that we have tried. Their Greek salad is also very good and a bargain. Have not tried the gelato yet! Will definitely be returning and highly recommend.
google avatar

Y S.

Yelp
I tried one of the two vegan empanada options - the sweet potato (the other was a samosa). I thought the crust was flakey and good but the filling was pretty one note and could have used more flavor (and salt). Kinda pricey for what you get, but that's also a Laguna Beach thing in general. The guy at the register was nice.
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
The service was nice; however, the guava empanada that I had was not great. I think that the cheese might've overpowered everything so the empanada's flavor didn't have as much depth.
google avatar

Dianne Y.

Yelp
Price is a lil high but the empanadas are delicious!!! Such a great variety to choose from I wish they were cheaper so I could try multiple but the size is good and hefty, inside is warm and just so amazing I love!!!!

Beth G.

Yelp
Love these empanadas! So good. Quick service. I always stop in when driving through Laguna. Parking is a bit challenging. A few small tables outside.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious!! Beef empanada combo with Greek salad is a must!! Empanadas are baked and you can taste the freshness and quality of the products. Come here often, it never disappoints!!

Yelp
Good place if you're walking by and are looking for a casual bite to eat with zero expectations. Sergio's Empanadas had a reputation around Laguna; they started out in the Farmer's markets. He and his mom were known for their amazing pastry Argentinian empanadas that roamed throughout farmer's market locations and eventually made their way into Laguna. Everything was fresh and empanadas handmade in his mom's bakery. Although the current owner who took over in 2018 has grown and turned it into their own place, they do not sell *Sergio's* empanadas. In fact, they used to buy and resell empanadas from West Hollywood, but now "they are made outside." Whatever that means. Additionally, the quality is not the same and it seems they freeze their food since sometimes the empanadas are undercooked in some areas and other Yelpers have also noted that they have seen them unpackage frozen pies to sell, big sigh! The availability of their empanadas is spotty. During one of my recent visits, my bf ordered a beef empanada, but they were out, and the owner said that if we could wait 10 minutes, they could have it out and ready. However, the next time they were just out of empanadas and had to settle for other options. They've tasted the best when I reheated them the next day at home, they are less dry, and with the chimichurri sauce they are delicious! The empanada itself though is nothing special, they did not taste fresh and reminded me more of pre-packed food -- It's the chimichurri sauce that works the magic. Would I come back? Ummm, if I'm walking by, sure, why not! There are still good 3-3.5 If you add the sauce, but they're not to be compared to Sergio's empanadas. They still have the same name, which can be misleading for Yelpers who will get a mixed bag of reviews older than 2018 the year they took over or those reviewers who have recently tasted the food and are referring to its prior owners reputation. I can't blame the customers there was no clear transition, and it almost feels like a trickery. I got there expecting to find one thing and I get another. Some people may not mind or feel differently about transparency, but it matters greatly to me. It would be one thing if they were selling the same stuff and nothing changed except the owner, but that's not the case. Onto the positive things! The empanadas are bigger and have a good amount of filling - a bigger bang for your buck! They added the "spicy pork" empanada which I think is the better tasting ones but it's not spicy. They have also added drinks like Vietnamese coffee and Thai Iced tea, but most excitingly, they have added Gelato! And everyone in Laguna loves Gelato, especially if you don't want to wait in line at Gelato Paradiso. The owners are very polite and respectful, hence why I was hesitant to review but at the end of the day I am the customer. So, If you come here because you're passing by, the whole impression is different! It's a counter restaurant with minimal seating so the service is super fast with reasonable prices! They have a good variety of foods for everyone from regular meat or vegetarian to sweet or savory, soups, salads, desserts and a range of drinks from iced teas, coffee to beers and sangrias. I can't stress enough, If you're going to give their empanadas a try, try them with the chimichurri sauce! Enjoy some fresh-ish, from-someone's-oven empanadas or gelato while walking by to the beach!
google avatar

Isabelle V.

Yelp
The place is a little small, but they have outside seating.., there empanadas are so good, buttery and flaky .. Chicken pot pie empanada were my favorite... after being at the beach, this is a must stop before going home, empanadas and some ginger lemonade ... no regrets!
google avatar

Lucho R.

Yelp
I came Monday noon: CLOSED; Tuesday noon: CLOSED; Wednesday noon: CLOSED. Most of the days I wanted to eat here, CLOSED!!!! This people must be rich, they never work! Why don't you sell the store to somebody who really wants to work and give a real argentinian taste to those overpriced empanadas.
google avatar

Lisa R.

Yelp
We always stop for empanadas when driving this way. Their empanadas are flakey and not too thick, and have a good amount of fillings (we don't like the thick crust, little filling versions we've had elsewhere). You can purchase them hot or frozen. They offer yummy drinks and desert empanadas as well. Our faves are the beef, chicken pot pie, and mac & cheese.
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
UHM wOw, I just had the mushroom and chicken with the chicken poblano. AMAZIN! I cry. This place is my favorite spot in Laguna. The best is a soup and empanada on a cold day! On a hot day, Their gelato is to die for!
google avatar

Connie G.

Yelp
Yum! These empenadas are huge and stuffed with goodness! My favorite was the MAC & Cheese yes please! I live how they took a tradition and altered the ingredients to place inside to give you still great flavors but a new way to enjoy empenadas in our modern world. Have no fear you can still get the classics too! Also ordered a chicken plobano soup that was delicious! Affordable and plenty of street parking up and down the street. Definitely will be back!
