My Three Decades of Pizza at Sergio’s in Connecticut | Bon Appétit

"A suburban Connecticut red-sauce joint that functions as a family ritual and neighborhood takeout institution: large pies (often half cheese, half sausage and peppers), a classic salad bar with iceberg lettuce and pickled antipasti, and a windowless white back room used for kids’ birthday parties and group dinners. The restaurant is sensory in memory—the red-tinted, pebbly hard-plastic cup, birch beer, and the deli counter in the back where takeout is picked up and slices of cheesecake or biscotti are grabbed for dessert. The pizza is familiar and slightly flawed—sauce a touch too sweet, crust with a mild char and what some call too much cheese—but that predictability is exactly why generations return. Phone orders are handled by the same voice who knows your family, and the place is woven into decades of personal moments, from noisy adolescent birthday chaos to fraught family dinners and even a frightening medical emergency in the dining room." - ByAmanda Shapiro

Really cool place. The food was delicious and the staff here were friendly and professional! We were able to enjoy the clam casino pizza in a new haven style which was delectable. The cookies were sold separately but we're delicious! Parking was easily accessible and had plenty of spots open for lunch. I am looking forward to going back again soon!

Google
If you can get there, the pizza is delicious! But don't trust their hours. Get confirmation that they're actually open before heading out. Walked there to enjoy dinner by the Trail on Sun 5/25/25. Maps said they're open. Their site said they're open. Nothing on their door indicating they'd close early. But they did. Locked tight. Lights out. Walked back home hungry. :/

Google
They make the best Italian food but I love the personal size pizza 🍕 so I can get what I want and almost finish it, it was real busy the night we went but everything seemed to go smoothly, there isn't a waitress situation but I think it works well here, can't wait to go back

Brian

Google
The pizza is awful. If you like like slop in a cardboard box, this place is for you. Overloaded and disgusting. We will never order here again. We didn't even eat it. I tried to pick it up, the crust broke away from the soggy pizza. Gross. We threw it out and ordered other food. This is all (everything is this post) my humble opinion.

Google
Real deal pizza! On a very short list of good pizza places out of Hamden..Great food! A little loud when busy. Plenty of Parking in rear. Clean bathrooms. Experienced wait staff!

Google
Absolutely delicious Italian food with a homemade feel! Very expensive menu… Lots of delicious option! The tortellini carbonara was amazing!

Ordered food last night with my husband. Manicotti was pretty good but the woman who answered the phone had a terrible attitude. Snappy, sarcastic, and hung up before we could say thank you. Not everyone is cut out for customer service. Perhaps keep her off of the phones and possible away from tables until she learns some manners and phone etiquette.

Google
It's probably the best Italian food and pizza that I have had so far in Hamden, CT!

Yelp
I am remiss in writing a review of Sergio's. I just saw the latest rankings of CT pizza places and Sergio's was sadly overlooked. I remember when they first opened in that small front of a house before they moved to the current location which was a former dress shop if memory serves. Their pizza, calzones, GRINDERS (CT saying) and entrees are excellent. But what really impressed me was their stuffed breads. The last years of my time in Hamden before I left for college was enjoying Sergio's excellent varied menu. I hope you will too.

Yelp
In my first review I wrote I can't wait to come back to try more items on the menu. So we stop back for lunch. We started off with an order of their wedding soup, and a meatball grinder. We also took home their carrot cake and tiramisu. Dessert portions were huge.Everything was delicious, and you can tell everything here is homemade.

Yelp
Great value for money! My very picky husband liked it and he's a pizza snob. I found the gluten free pizza weirdly fluffy. I was not a fan but I do appreciate that it's not the grainy rice cracker most places want to offer.

Yelp
Have been back twice since first review. I'm glad that this business survived the pandemic and rash reviews written during it like my last one. The owner reached out to make it right, I declined. I made it back twice on my own since. The last time we ate in and it was fantastic! Steak sandwich, fries, eggplant pizza, and pasta and meatballs. The pizza was especially tasty, the crust crisp, the sauce tangy, good quality cheese. All food was quite good and the prices quite fair. A combination that's very hard to find these days. Will definitely be back with my family. I really like that you pay after ordering and get your own plates and utensils. This model speeds up service. Everyone was pleasant and courteous, even though it was very busy.

Yelp
Kind of a hole in the wall type place but the food was great! I shared a chicken parm platter with my husband, it was quite large. The platter came with bread, pasta and a small garden salad. The desserts also looked delicious but I didn't get to try them this time around.

Yelp
Food is good, whether dinners, pizza or catering. Like all restaurants in Hamden, it's something like 20% higher in price than the surrounding area. Don't know why I can't get a couple pizzas and a salad for less than $80. Service is iffy on the phone sometimes, but they deliver well.

Yelp
I've been going to Sergios since they opened more than 15 years ago. Their pizza is delicious. Their regular menu items are delicious. The cookies. Well, the cookies are made by a local baker and are hard to come by because they sell out so quickly. I haven't been able to get kitchen sink cookies for, well, I can't remember the last time it's been so long. So, aside from that disappointment, and that they only had 3 packages of oatmeal raisin cookies today (I always buy chocolate chip), the food just doesn't disappoint. The dining room is closed until Summer but that shouldn't stop you from going in to see all the other wonderful desserts they have when you pick up your food/pizza!

Candy B.

Yelp
Pizza is great and the dinners are Fantastic! Large portions and fair prices are just a bonus, the food is the Star!

Yelp
After a long day at work the fam surprised me with a Lobster Ravioli dinner from Sergio's last week! What?! Shrimp grilled to perfection on top,the ravioli was stuffed with lobster and the creamy pink sauce was smooth and perfectly seasoned! Salad was fresh, bread was plentiful and must be shop made! Just enough to dip in the sauce! No butter needed! Beautiful dinner!

Yelp
We were on an ice cream quest on a Friday night, so naturally, we had to add pizza into the mix. Went into Sergio's without looking up any reviews on Yelp (normally a dangerous move). Although they weren't technically serving anyone, their tables were available to sit at, so we ordered mozz sticks (phenomenal cheese inside) and a large half bacon/half meatball. The mozz sticks came out very quickly and then the pizza came out. We stared at it like a groom doing a first look at the bride . The crust was perfectly cooked and the toppings were plentiful. Add Foxon Park, homemade cookies and friendly staff into the equation and you get return customers! Also, Wentworth's Ice Cream is about a 25 second drive away

Yelp
Sergio's is the finest restaurant in town! I went in with my friend for supper and my oh my was it excellent! The pizza man, Marlo bauer handed me the food directly... it was fantastic and delicious. I love the atmosphere, fantastic prices despite Joe Biden and his acts that lead to terrible inflation. I'm so excited to return next weekend after I hit the galf course! WE LOVE SERGIOS!

Debbie P.

Yelp
Pizza was awful it was burnt the whole crust was black burnt so bad couldn't even eat it had to . throw out a total waste of money I called and asked for a new pizza and take the burnt one back and they refused I will NEVER order another pizza from them I wouldn't even give them a single star.

Brian B.

Yelp
Always consistent. Pizza, calzones, shrimp and calamari salad, escarole and bean with sausage my favorite. On target with times and courteous service. Thank you Sergio's!
google avatar

Brenton B.

Yelp
It's my favorite pizza place. A white Sergio's special is a great choice. We almost always get takeout so can't comment much on dining inside but service has been great when we pickup the pizza. It's a nice family owned business and you feel comfortable.

Yelp
Great pizza!! New Haven style in Hamden I'm glad I came across this place! Definitely enjoyed the pizza, and have ordered a few more time since. Highly recommended

Yelp
Sergio's has the best pizza. It's the sauce and cheese. The sauce has the best taste. The crust is crispy without being so burned that it is borderline cardboard. Anyone that lives around here can go to Sally's, modern, etc and of course they are good, but i still say Sergio's is the best!

Yelp
Went here today because my mom wanted pizza and this spot was close by and I remembered having their garlic knots. Well my mom is very pizza picky and she said oh I liked it this place will stay in business for a long time. Also the cashier whom I believe is the owner was very friendly. Once she heard me say the pizza was for my mom she gave me extra garlic knots. Thanks again I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I love everything about Sergio's. The food is always delish!!! The "Sweets" part of this restaurant are sooooo good. Sometimes you just need chocolate cake for lunch.....they offered 3 different choices,(also non-chocolate choices) All homemade!!! The staff is wonderful!!! Family owned and run. Love them all!!! Go..try anything....you will not be disappointed!!!!

Cathy S.

Yelp
Called to place a order the lady taking the order didn't turn down the phone. Then she's cursing in the back saying "they better have their fuckin money to pay for the food". I hung up and called back to cancel my order!!!! Y would I order and not pay Smdfh I've never even ordered here before This is bad for business!!!!! Change ur front staff cause they are giving ur business a bad image

Yelp
Yet another spot that my partner is a regular at. Before we even walked in they were saying hello and asking where he'd been. I hadn't even been to Sergio's before - only had their stuff delivered or as takeout. The restaurant is quaint and the staff is friendly. But their dishes are amazing. We always have to have cheese bread and the marinara is to die for. I would eat it with everything if I could. The cheese to bread ratio in the cheese bread is weighted heavily on the cheese side, just how I like it. I got the chicken balsamic and I can't even begin to explain the portions. I had 3-4 meals out of that one meal. Lots of chicken and spinach to go around. Salad comes with it as well. We ended up taking a lot home and I wasn't disappointed.

Mary Ann S.

Yelp
My friend and I ordered pizza today. Pizza came out burned. After I asked for another pizza from a worker who agreed and took the pizza away and ordered us another. The owner verbally abused my friend and I. She was condescending, rude and shouted to us from the front of the restaurant. We were seated in the back of the restaurant. She came over with the new pizza, stood there asking how the new pizza was and refused to leave until I looked at it and took a bite. She then started on another temper tantrum with my friend insulted her stating she was too old for this crap. I then stated to the owner I was older than her who did she think she was speaking to. We will never go back to this place again. The owner needs to learn how to keep customers and not drive them away with her rude and condescending behavior. Stay away from this place as far as you can unless you want to be verbally abused!!!!!
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
Our business placed an order from them recently and first, the lady taking the orders was huffing and puffing and just nasty on the phone. If you are overwhelmed or in a bad mood, or whatever it is, you should never ever be rude to paying customers. Especially when there are infinite other restaurants we could be ordering from. Anyways, what pissed us off even more was that the delivery guy just blurts out, oh they added a 15% gratuity to your bill. FOR WHAT??!!! It's literally across the street from the office, so it isn't a "delivery fee". The woman's name that took my order, said Rena on the receipt. So did Rena add a15% tip to herself when I paid with my credit card over the phone??? That is not legal to just add a tip to an over the phone credit card payment. It's bad business ethic and just a cheap, sketchy move. Everyone in the office was disappointed in everything. Bad move. No one here will ever order from there ever again. And sad, we rotate restaurants locally and do Office lunches every week.

Yelp
Best pizza around! Monster portions of awesome lasagna , chicken parm and more. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
We love this place! Several years ago, I decided to stop stressing over cooking to host Christmas Eve dinner, so we have used Sergio's since for catering for the holiday (and other get togethers). The food is so amazing!! All of our guests compliment each year how good the food was! The portions are huge and their prices are extremely reasonable. Happy, satisfied guests on Christmas is just as fulfilling as cooking yourself and getting compliments (well, almost), but you're WAY less stressed! I actually get to enjoy our holidays now! We like the food here so much, that even though we moved and are a good 25 minutes away, we still drive here.

Charlotte B.

Yelp
Excellent grinders and delicious tomato sauce. Love their eggplant and meatball grinders and the egg and pepper grinders. Great food!

Len Z.

Yelp
What pizza restaurants close at 8PM? These guys do and it looks like they were in a rush to make my pizza ahead of an early closing. Pizza was undercooked and runny. The restaurant is self-serve so you pay and then treat yourself to plastic utensils and paper plates. If you are tired of restaurants still worried about COVID, go somewhere else. I could go to the supermarket and get a frozen pizza and eat off paper plates. If "Build Back Better" was a pizza, it would be Sergio's. Sad.

Yelp
I've been going to Sergio's for years. It's always good, service always friendly and consistent pizza. One thing thoroughly disappointed me though. They put marinara sauce on their buffalo chicken pizza. That's a bit weird to me. My buffalo chicken pizza tastes like chicken parm pizza. It was good but definitely not what I was expecting or hoping for. We also got a pepperoni pizza that was good. Good family place that has been around for 30 years. They have good stuffed breads as well and I enjoy the pitchers of beer and soda. I wish they brought the salad bar back. That was a good thing to have. They also have some of the best meat lovers pizza I've ever had. If this interests you, get it. You won't regret it. It's stacked high win so much meat!

Brian M.

Yelp
Used to love the pizza here and this was my go to place for years as it is right down the street from my home. Unfortunately the last few times I ordered pizza it was a soupy mess when I got home, probably was undercooked. Haven't been back since and probably won't ever.

John B.

Yelp
We walked in the door and the place was lit up like a Christmas Tree on the 4th of July. Please put a dimmer on the light switch!! We stood at the counter and the host was very interested in his phone and didn't acknowledge our presence. We walked out.

Linda C.

Yelp
Today I revisited Sergio's. The meatball sub was delicious as was the soup. The garlic knots are always perfect. I've eaten at Sergio's often. I've had many of the dinners and I have never had anything that wasn't really flavorful and perfect. I know, it's hard to believe. I've never written a review for them and I noticed that they work so hard. Oh, the desserts are yummy, too. This is a gem of a restaurant - one not to be missed!

Yelp
We didn't have places like these growing up in '80s-'90s eastern Iowa. Here in Connecticut, there's a entire category of casual, cozy Italian restaurants. They're distinct from pizza/grinder shops in that there isn't a particular emphasis on any one dish; the point here is a relaxed atmosphere and good down-to-earth food. Sergio's virtues were extolled by a friend of mine, a longtime local, so I made them my first choice. I got there about half an hour after they opened. They were decorated for Christmas and there was Sinatra playing. Soup of the day was beef and barley, perfect for a cold rainy Saturday, and accompanied by four slices of chewy bread and butter. It had been entirely too long since I last dipped bread into soup. My appetizer was escarole and beans, and it was bigger than the entree! The escarole itself was perfectly done, tender but not mushy. Entree was pasta e fagioli (pasta fa-zool, my friend told me beforehand), in a light and delicious tomato-based broth. I transferred over some of the escarole for a great combination. I should mention that this was only my second time ever having escarole and beans - the first was a homemade bowl from my friend - and my first time having pasta e fagioli. These are Old World dishes that I'd never encountered as a kid. Service was very courteous, and didn't make me feel weird for dining alone at what is clearly a group/family-focused establishment. Oh, and while I was eating, a big family with delightfully thick New York accents came in, sat down, and began a gift exchange, making for some nice background noise. I'd recommend Sergio's to anyone, local or passing through. I'll be going less bean-heavy for my next visit - I'm thinking penne alla vodka, with meatballs...

Yelp
Just wanted to share an update. Always great for both dine in and take out. Massive portions, great value. Nice to find a local place that always pleases!

Yelp
I went to Sergio's today ITCHING to give it a 5 star review. This is a place I've come to regularly since I was in 5th grade and am just now submitting a review. it had been awhile since I stepped foot inside (most of the recent visits were take-out orders for their delicious and generously portioned stuffed bread). Sergio's is the epitome of a family Italian restaurant. You won't find any frilly interior decor (some might accuse the inside to be a bit bland), and the food is simply good home-style cooking. I usually get the penne a la vodka here, and it's just better than the competition. Pasta is perfectly al dente and sauce is to die for. And the 1-trip to the salad bar is great! I usually eat so much at the salad bar that I end up taking most of the entree home. Tonight was no different. Why was this a 4 star review then? If I remember correctly, a linguine with clams used to be about $12 (absolute STEAL). Now it's $20. I don't ever remember seeing a Sergio's menu with pricing in the $20's... it was a bit of a shock. Many of the items I used to consider superb value are no longer. Servers are standouts here. Great memory and exceptionally friendly. Food is great, but with the recent rise in prices, I wonder if there should have been a corresponding increase in ambiance or style.

Yelp
Finally got around to ordering pizza. This place is closer than I remember, which is good. The pizza is solid, not the best (especially around New Haven) but the sauce, cheese, toppings, and crust are all pretty good. They were out of garlic knots so we got some garlic bread instead which was pretty standard. A solid option, though they aren't on any online ordering systems I could find.

Michael W.

Yelp
Certainly not bad food, but not the equal of Adriana's in New haven or Vespucci's in Cheshire. However, if you are in the area, try it and decide for yourself. On the other hand, screaming children that neither the parents nor the owner do anything about, crosses a line for me. This was our final visit to Sergio's.
google avatar

Fernando A.

Yelp
Just got some pizza here for the first time and it was AMAZING! I got the Eggplant Rollatine and it was packed with ingredients and flavor, fried eggplant mutz ham and bommmbs of ricotta ! I am so glad I found this place, I've been dying for good pizza in Hamden, and I found it. Definitely great prices and portions, true family style, my large pizza felt like it weighed a ton. Sergio has a new customer here. Also had some delicious home made Tiramisu. Friendly staff at the pick up area as well.
google avatar

Emanuele M.

Yelp
Good place, very good food, their chicken bruschetta is unbelievable, great vegetarian pizza. I order food at least once a week, fast delivery and food arrived hot.

Mike P.

Yelp
Somebody actually gave Sergio's one star because they didn't say "goodbye" and "thank you" as you walked out the door? Are you kidding me? It's a pizza joint in Mount Carmel, not Lawry's of Beverly Hills. Good Lord, what is WRONG with people? You feed me good food, I don't care if you kiss my Asparagus. I'm not there because I need friends. Join Match-dot-com for Pete's sake. The food is excellent. The prices are affordable, the portions are big, the menu selections are diverse, the place is clean, what the heck more could you ask for? So you didn't get served fast enough. They bring you bread. It's always good. The apps are incredible, the soups are great....When your meal comes out, it's fresh and hot and it's obvious that somebody took great care to put it together. If you're a reasonable person, go here. You will love it.

Yelp
Sergio's is a great family restaurant. Spoke with the owner Sergio himself and he took the time out to meet with his customers! Which is very rare these days .. we ordered a medium meatball pizza and was very pleased with the taste and quality of the flavor of the dough and fresh sauce and just the right amount of good Grande Mozzarella to blanket everything together! My family and I will definitely dine or takeout here at Sergio's again!!

Christine N.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite pizza restaurants, but I've now had 2 bad experiences in a row. The pizza is nearly inedible. It is extremely oily. When you pick up a slice, the cheese sloughs off as a sheet, leaving greasy, soggy crust behind. I won't be back

Luna M.

Yelp
Decided to try this place for the first time and the lady that answered the phone was not very friendly and didn't even say bye or thank you when she hung up. The pizza itself was mediocre. Toppings on pizza were tasteful but the crust was raw and undercooked. Will not return.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
My husband and I have been getting our pizza from Rossini's for awhile. That's not the case anymore now that we discovered Sergio's their pizza is 100x better! the eggplant rollitini is our favorite

Yelp
When you're looking for must eats in Connecticut you'd probably come across the famous Frank Pepe's, BUT Sergio's in the midst of Hamden & Cheshire had been around since 1986 and I found out why. The quality of their ingredients are superb making their pizza AMAZING! (Top 2 pizza we've had in CT) We got the Houseworks and Calamari & Shrimp salad. Both were absolutely fantastic and just what you're taste buds need. I'm back again to find out more about the other dishes they have to offer. I know I'll leave satisfied and highly recommending this place to anyone looking for great eats around midsouth of CT!

Yelp
While I love Boston with my whole heart, I truly think the pizza is awful. Sergio's spoiled me at a young age and will continue to as long as they are open. My last meal before I moved abroad was the frutti de mare at Sergio's. Loaded with seafood and covered in a red sauce with a kick, it was the perfect comfort food. When I returned, Sergio's pizza was my first request. For this I have one wholehearted recommendation: pollo bianco. This white pizza with chicken cutlets, broccoli, and ricotta is dreamy. Other family favorites that I can echo are tortellini alfredo, penne alla vodka, lobster ravioli, the baked trio, and anything with their meatballs. I don't think you can go wrong here. One thing worth noting is that it isn't cheap. I do think you are absolutely getting the right value for your money. The serving sizes here are huge; I can get two large meals or three normal sized meals out of one serving. When you consider the $16 price tag knowing that, it is a value. When you consider the quality, care, and service the meals here are a steal. I believe there is also a $10 pasta night; it is definitely worth it to call and see!

Yelp
One of my professors brought us Sergio's pizza for our last class during my last semester of school, and everyone in my class was surprised that most of us had never had it before, especially since Sergio's is right down the street from Quinnipiac and better than the pizza people from school usually order. It's a thin, New Haven-style pizza with a crunchy, yet chewy crust and tasty sauce and cheese. The pizza I had that day was good, so a few weeks later, during finals, I decided to order from Sergio's myself. When I went to pick it up, I was happy to see Foxon Park sodas in the cooler, and I picked up a liter. Since it was finals, my friend wanted ranch dressing to dip our crusts in (finals is a time to indulge), and the lady behind the counter happily obliged to our request. Prices were pretty standard for pizza - I paid about $17 for a large pepperoni pizza and a liter of soda. This time, though, once we sat down to eat the pizza, it was good, but some of the pieces I got were really burnt on the bottom. I like my pizza well done and crispy, but I'm talking about completely black under some slices, so it just tasted like burnt crust. Then while we stayed in school working on our finals for the rest of the night, my friend and I drank buckets of water because the pizza really salted us out. My rating would have been 4 stars if it were only for my first Sergio's pizza experience, but I have to knock it a star for being burnt and salty the second time. Sergio's still gets extra points, though, for Foxon Park soda and for being friendly to people who like ranch dressing with their pizza.

Yelp
Mediocre pizza but whats worse is the attitude of the employees. Last i knew you say thank you when someone spends money at your restaurant. Would not recommend this place

Yelp
When I First Arrived At Sergio's I Arrived To The Aroma Of Sauce In The Air & A Smile On The Hostesses Face. Me & My Party Of Three Was Given A Table Right Away. We Sat Down And Began To Look Thru The Menu ; As A Big Italian Food Fan I Noticed Familiar Traditional Dishes My Party & I Ordered A Large Mozzarella Pie. I Also Noticed They Had Specials Also ( Tuesday : Chicken Day Some Chicken Dinners Are 13.95 , Wednesday : Pasta Day Pasta Dinners Are Only 10.95 & Veal Dinners Are 16.95 On Thursday. ) They Also Serve Wine & Beer. I Also Received A Garden Salad & Bread. The Salad Was Great Tasted Fresh Not Soggy. The Bread However Was Not Warm Nor Felt As If It Was Ever Warmed And I Was Given Cold Butter To Put On Top Of Cold Bread. The Pizza Was Pretty Amazing Not Burnt Around The Rim Taken Out Of The Oven At The Perfect Time ( Tastes Like Its Made In A BrickOven ) Thin Crust Pizza The Sauce Was Homemade And I Was Able To Identify Ingredients In The Sauce (Amazing Sauce !) The Mozzarella Was Nice And Just Enough Not Over Powering. Everything Was Balanced Together & Not One Item Was Overpowering. Overall The Prices Are Average Dinners Are $16 & Up But You Get A Good Portion ( Not Hearty Like Most Italian Restaurants But A Good Portion ) .. If I'm In The Area After Work And I'm Craving Great Pizza , I'll Stop At Sergio's

Yelp
Shocked by the less than stellar reviews on here...Sergio's is amazing!! The perfect place to go when you're looking for a delicious "home-cooked" italian meal. The calamari is outstanding - perfectly crispy and full of flavor. On our last visit I had the penne vodka (one of my favorites) As usual, it didn't disappoint. The salad bar was great - everything was super fresh and it was clean (not like some sketchy salad bars at chain restaurants). The hubby ordered a pizza and loved it too. Everyone on staff is awesome too! They're always so happy to see you and make you feel like you're part of their family. Can't wait until our next visit :)

Yelp
After a hard day of work I didn't feel like cooking and decided to order Sergio's through silver spoon delivery. If you're from Hamden check it out great delivery services, but that's a whole other review. I had high hopes after reading the reviews online, but sadly I was disappointed. I ordered baked manicotti which came with soup and garlic knots. The garlic knots were delicious, but the baked manicotti was not good at all. The manicotti was covered in deli sliced mozzerella and was definitely over cooked. The manicotti was rubbery and had very little taste. A little seasoning can go a long way..They were generous with portion size but they were underfilled and underwhelming. Maybe the pizza is better? I'll give them another shot but won't try the pasta dinners again anytime soon.
