"Sesame Donuts has multiple doughnut counters throughout the greater Portland area, making it the most commuter-accessible on this list. The original location on the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway is a good choice for people on the west side, but the downtown shop is still open for a sweet bite pre-Saturday farmers market. The shop’s doughnuts are reminiscent of Dunkin Donuts, but better — expect a lighter, fresher dough with more care given to glazes and toppings." - Rebecca Roland, Nick Townsend, Eater Staff

Google
Shout out to this Sesame Donuts location! They were masterfully and cheerfully handling crowds of customers during Christmas. I am a delivery driver and they made me feel seen, taken care of, and they had the order ready! They gave me a free vegan donut to boot. Great shop, great vibes.

Google
I am not a donut person but I love a great cruller. This is one of the few places I have found that sells cruller. What a treat!

Cristin Becklund

Google
They have a huge selection of delicious looking donuts. I got a strawberry banana smoothie. Let’s just say, it the best smoothie I’ve ever had! Yum.

Google
If you're looking for a normal donut place and nothing super fancy, this is the kind of place you want to go. Friendly staff, beyond friendly owner, and a great simple (albeit unhealthy) breakfast. The worst part is that seating was limited, but most people get stuff to go so it was ok for us and we didn't feel cramped.

On a day i spontaneously wanted donuts, so did apparently many others. I came in one morning to a super busy rush. The staff handled the rush incredibly well, effectively taking orders and filling boxes with donuts in a loud and stressful environment. Food quality is as expected for donuts. Sesame Donuts is—in my humble opinion—significantly better than the competitors

I've been a frequent customer here for years, but today will be my last visit until the woman working tonight is no longer employed. Here’s what happened: I walked in around 8 p.m. to the familiar "ding ding" of the electronic bell. I looked over the menu and waited patiently for about three minutes. There was only one other customer inside, seated near the entrance. Even she seemed surprised no one was at the counter—she looked around as if trying to signal someone in the back on my behalf. After waiting, I politely but firmly said, “Hello? Anyone here?” A woman, possibly Hispanic, finally rushed out with a frustrated look on her face and snapped, “I’ll be right with you!” Her attitude was unnecessarily aggressive, and it felt like whatever personal frustration she was carrying spilled out onto me. Trying to deescalate, I calmly asked, “Is everything okay? Wtf? Are you having a bad day?” That only made things worse, she lashed out with even more attitude and stormed back to the kitchen, loudly venting to another employee. Thankfully, another worker also possible Hispanic and very kind, came out and handled the situation professionally, salvaging what was left of the experience. Still, I won’t be coming back as long as the first woman continues to work

Darn good doughnuts. Not too sweet. Pro tip: Ask what is fresh? Anything still hot will blow away Krispy Kreme. Employees are solid. The owner is very nice.

Yelp
Went here for the first time mid morning, tons of variety and well stocked! The lady who helped us was very friendly, my toddler was excited to be there and the employees were nice and patient while we placed our order and even gave my toddler a little donut hole to sample. It was very kind of her to do so. These donuts were so delicious and we would definitely come back here next time we visit. They are perfectly fried and plenty of toppings/frostings. We got a dozen and already ate a few of them they are so good.

Yelp
Friday 9/22/23 I was out with my aunt in the early afternoon and she decided to go here for some donuts and I was pleasantly surprised with my experience. I got an Oreo cookie donut, apple fritter, blueberry fritter, and cinnamon roll. The Oreo cookie donut was pretty good. The apple fritter was solid but once I warmed it up for a little it ended up becoming even better. The blueberry fritter was decent and the cinnamon roll was just okay. All in all, it's a solid spot for donuts.

Jesse G.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick snack/breakfast before dropping my daughter off at Garden Home for Girl Scout tree recycling. I was planning on getting a dozen for the group but my daughter said that was "weird", so we just got for ourselves. She got a maple covered bear claw. It was huge and she inhaled it. I got a Bavarian Cream. I give it a 3/10. Dough was actually doughy. Didn't even seem fully cooked. And they put the absolute minimum filling in the doughnut. Ambiance has the feel of a mini Dunkin Donuts so nothing special there. I would always prefer (Every Day is a ) Donut Day, but it was the opposite direction :(

Layne D.

Yelp
Pros - lots of variety, open late, easy parking lot and fast ordering/transactions. The donuts themselves (at least the ones we tried) were just okay. Not bad but definitely nothing that stood out. We tried a variety: jelly donut, boo donut, chocolate coconut, m&m, Boston cream, and vanilla sprinkle. The chocolate coconut donut had a chocolate cake base, but the rest were raised donuts. The raised donut dough isn't very sweet which is good when you're pairing it with toppings but it was a bit blah. Out of the bunch the jelly donut was my favorite. Jelly inside and sugar on the outside, decent combo. Again, these will feed your donut craving but I'm not sure that I would return. Really cute seasonal options though!

Luna H.

Yelp
I went here right after recovering from COVID, well needed treat. These are the best donuts I've had in a very long time. Definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
Pre-ordered 26 boxes of donuts for my son's last day of school. I put on the order two days before pick up. I was picking up for the parent - teacher association. Upon arrival to pick up the 26 dozen donuts, staff said they never got an order. They then said it was not their fault because Uber never informed them of the order. When I asked if we could buy any boxes of donuts so I could bring some to the school, I was told by staff that "they were just a worker and not to argue with them" and that "they were not going to do anything." I then spent the rest of the morning running around town trying to find 26 boxes of donuts at various groceries. I would have preferred they try to assist us in buying donuts from their shop to fulfill the order. Instead they just said it was Uber's fault and I was told that they would not help us. I had been going to this shop for 10 years. I will never return. Not because the order was messed up but in how they responded.

Chris B.

Yelp
The staff are very friendly. The donuts are always delicious. Classic donut shop atmosphere.

Amy N.

Yelp
Donuts are amazing and fresh every morning. The owner is very nice and listens well and pays attention to details. Great ambiance for quick donuts at 7am

Diana-Jane K.

Yelp
I've been purchasing donuts, pastries and other food items ("wiener wraps" & baklava) here for over 20 years! Best donuts!

Mr T.

Yelp
This is the way a business ought to be: top quality product, big selection, outstanding customer service. My favorite donut in Portland.

Feier L.

Yelp
Continuing on my donut tour of Portland, Sesame Donut was up next. I tried 12 different flavors and most of them were unimpressive. The blueberry donut was the best out of all of them and that's the only one I would go back to get again. I will be continuing on to try other places

Rashi T.

Yelp
I like the other Sesame Donut spot more than this location . Somehow the donuts at this place feel like they have been made a day before .Just not as fresh as one would like . Lots of variety though and great prices. The person at the counter is very courteous and kind .

LOGAN O.

Yelp
Tried this place just outta luck passing by. OMG this place is awesome. Couldn't find anything to complain about. Really delicious

Richard H.

Yelp
I would personally much rather go here verse the Portland Icon of Voo Doo Donuts, the donuts here they use the recipe from Dunkin Donuts, as they used to be a DD- My personal favorite is the Vanilla Cream, and it's exactly like the one that DD has and taste just as good. I love the fact found a fantastic place to get donuts whenever I'm down in the Portland, OR area and would HIGHLY recommend them!

Michael L.

Yelp
Horrible customer service from the middle eastern lady there. I was really excited to try out this place. And her attitude and vibe was just horrible. Made me not want to order anything at all. I still got some stuff cause we went all that way and my wife was hungry but I will never come back here again. Also place is just really dirty and messy.

Dave K.

Yelp
Saeed is a gentleman and a lover of people. He makes donuts that are quite good, but he's really selling love and community. Try the house coffee also.

Lea T.

Yelp
On the website its basically 24/7 but on the actual location the store is closed. The people that were working there looked over as we stood outside wondering why our local favorite place was closed. They did not acknowledge and went about their business, one also grabbed a donut and went towards the back. What happened to sesame donuts?

Pnt M.

Yelp
This place has the best donut in town. Blue donut and voodoo are more touristy but this is local and has best quality Go for Bavarian cream and coconut cream!

Matt U.

Yelp
At 5 am, when the little mans decides it time to be awake, it is officially time to awake so mom can get a bit more rest...ergo dad looking for a 24 hour donut spot! Sesame donuts to the rescue! We sauntered on in at a quarter to 6 and had the place to ourselves! There was seating for a dozen folks or so, but it's obvious they specialize in on the go orders. There were probably 30 options of carb laden glory that were fun, while not being overly exciting. It's definitely not VooDoo Donuts or even a bakery where they're making you think, "Wow, that's interesting!" This place just has good, down home donuts. The donuts were familiar with a few more colorful options. There were a number of different heart-shaped donuts with different colored frosting, lots of chocolate options, a French Cruller that was delightful, as well as some mildly amusing flavors like lemon poppyseed. My wife also appreciated the fact that she could get a chocolate croissant here! The folks working here look like they were a family, and everybody was very nice. The donuts were not super expensive, and based on the experience this is definitely a spot I would come back to! Again, it's not a voodoo donuts where you're going to be wowed by the presentation, but rather a good down-home shop or you can take the kids or go with a friend to grab a donut and talk about life.

Yelp
When I visited Sesame Donuts, it was to pick up a mystery bag of donuts, thanks to the app Too Good To Go. I mention this because the premise of the app is to sell older food at a discount so that it does not go to waste. With that in mind, I would say that Sesame Donuts has delicious donuts, but there was a lack on consistency between the variety of donut flavors that I tried. Some flavors and varieties were unique and satisfying, and I would definitely get them again. But other donuts felt and tasted too similar to one another to really justify making them different flavors. This may be because I received older donuts, so take that with a grain of salt! What Sesame Donuts does EXTREMELY well with, though, is balancing the sweetness of their donuts. None of the flavors I tried felt sickly sweet, which can be common with some donut shops. Every flavor felt nicely balanced between sugar and the bread-iness of the donut. Overall, I really enjoyed my donuts from Sesame Donut, and I would return again. While some of their available flavors may seem repetitive, the donuts themselves are well-balanced, soft and satisfying. To make the cliche comparison to Voodoo Doughnuts, I would go to Sesame Donuts if I wanted a simple donut done well. If I were looking for crazier combos, then Voodoo would be the place.

Jadyn N.

Yelp
Some simple and good tasting regular donuts. These donuts are just regular simple flavor donuts that just right. My co workers love them.

Jizelle B.

Yelp
Ordered a bagel with cream cheese... why is it only on one side!!? Not everyone eats their bagel like a sandwich. If I pay for the cream cheese I want the dang cream cheese, don't be cheap!

Michaela P.

Yelp
I'm not going to say these donuts are the most amazing donuts in the world, but they are good and the customer service is wonderful. I'd come back for the customer service alone. I wish I got her name but she's a blonde girl who wears a low ponytail. She's adorable and very nice. I am boring so I just got a maple bar & a buttermilk bar. They are open early and stay open until pretty late. Stop by if you have the chance.

Linsday L.

Yelp
My friend and I both got maple donut bars and a sausage egg and cheese bagel sandwich. The donuts looked pretty old, flat and poorly iced. The bagel sandwiches had a small sausage patty that slipped out the sandwich and was eaten within the first few bites, filling only a quarter of the sandwich. After eating our food my friend stood up and immediately had stomach problems. She had to stand there for a moment, gathering herself while the stomach pains persisted. Once I got home I also felt my stomach rumbling, and gurgling, not feeling well.

Thay V.

Yelp
Who doesn't love a good donut! Located on the outskirts of where Portland turns into Beaverton you will find this little gem of a pastry/ donut shop. There is plenty of parking in the lot and the pastries here are freshly made daily. They have a wide selection of different types of donuts from maple bars to jelly filled and coconut covered items. Where they really shine is the donut holes. These cute little donut bites are delicious and comes in many fan fair. The donut hole flavors include the traditional powdered sugar to glazed and some weird flavors like jelly filled, pumpkin spice and sesame holes. The dough is soft with a great fluffy texture. The price is comparable to what you would find at most donut shops so very reasonable. My favorites are the maple bars and the glazed and sesame seed donut holes. The staff are friendly and helpful. They have samples for you to try and are always willing to let you sample their donut holes. The great pastries, reasonable pricing and friendly service will keep me coming back for years.

Rachel D.

Yelp
Good old classic donuts at a great price. Been coming here all my life when a donut craving strikes. Nothing particularly fancy so it's entirely unfair to compare to a place like Blue Star. And substantially better than Krispy Crèmes. They have a huge selection of classic donut varieties: bars, twists, old fashions, donut holes, etc... They're made daily so everything is pretty fresh.

Caro P.

Yelp
The donuts I tried: Buttermilk bar Old fashioned Lemon poppyseed Sesame Apple cider Raspberry cream cheese The buttermilk and old fashioned taste like they are the exact same batter, just differently shaped donuts. I liked the old fashioned better because it's shape lent itself to more crispy edges. The sesame and lemon poppyseed have the same donut base but are roped differently. Both are good and somewhat subtle flavored. Apple cider was also subtle. Delicious but I wouldn't get it again. The all time winner was the raspberry cream cheese. It was the only filled donut we got and now I wish I had tried more of the filled ones. The raspberry Middle was fresh and plentiful; the topping was light and complemented the middle well. Next time I visit Portland, I will come back. PS. The guy behind the counter was cheerful and friendly. Especially since he was working thanksgiving morning- he gets extra props for being a positive dude.

Ben C.

Yelp
Used to be 24 hour. Used to be great donuts, but if you're not going to change the listed hours and I waste a trip (or two) out just to discover a hand-written sign after no answer on the phone, I'm going to leave a poor review. 5 stars awaits you again if you list accurate hours or go back to 24 hour.

Cassandra C.

Yelp
These donuts are simply solid. In my opinion they beat out most competition. It's a small store front. Service has always been quick. They almost always have the variety we are looking for on our occasional trips to Beaverton/Portland. They are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year and keep the fryers hot. They also do seasonal donuts for holidays or just to celebrate the four seasons. We tried Apple Cider today. It was a winner. Prices are okay but the product feels worth the cost. I like the obvious lack of pretentious trendiness. They have bagels too!

Christine C.

Yelp
Depending on the time of day you come to get donuts, you're either getting stale product, or insanely fresh stuff. It's all kept open-air on display, which seems to contribute to the staleness of donuts I've received a few times. Do I still think this place is better than Voodoo? Totally. The owner/owners wife are an interesting combo - he is very friendly, but she got annoyed with me when I didn't know immediately what I wanted and had a question about a few of the donuts and their fillings. She also was nursing a cough, but wasn't covering her mouth and was coughing over the top of all the food. I'd recommend going for the cinnamon bun/twist donuts, when they're fresh, the texture of the donut is heavenly.

Logan C.

Yelp
To be honest, donuts literally and figuratively go over my head. But, Sarah made this customer experience super fun even for athletically challenged individuals! She is super chill and encouraging, you won't regret ordering donuts from here!

Brooke H.

Yelp
How do you made donuts better? Add in a dash of humor and some amazing customer service. The shop was filled with regulars, comfortable conversations and a cozy atmosphere. The lovely men behind the counter were helpful and hilarious. If subtle humor is your thing - you'll love a visit. The donuts are also delicious.

Melanie T.

Yelp
It seems the frosting was slapped on so fast that it was unappealing to me. I passed and hope to find somewhere with a more "zesty" atmosphere than this donut shop.

Janet M.

Yelp
I don't even like donuts. No, really. I never really did. That cement block in my tummy feeling I enjoy afterwards....not for me. Something about Portland, parenthood of a tween, and being married to my sugar junkie husband (being brought up on carob and wheatgrass and sprouted bread will do that to a person), and the stars have aligned themselves in such a way that I've eaten more donuts this year than in all my other 40coughcough years together. I know this isn't good. Couple weeks back I had a mini fritter from Sesame at a meeting and it was good. Fritters are usually WAY too big. This was nice. So I dragged my family in here this morning. There was a line of happy skinny people. I hate them. But eh, whatever. Just glue that glazed thing onto my ass and be done with it already. We got a dozen from the nice lady. It was actually a dozen. No bakers dozen here. We also got some donut holes. 15 for a couple dollarsish. Hauled them home. The sesame one is yummy. Ditto for the pumpkin and apple ones. Some of them tasted a little like old oil according to hubby. I'm not sure. I had an apple spice donut and split a coconut one with him. Pretty tasty. So the verdict is...we like the Donuts plus shop by our house a teeny bit better. But this is better than the lines at trendy voodoo or the phony krispy kreme thing for sure.

Mia M.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to get donuts ever since I was little. Soooo yummy and I recommend. The employees are so nice and the donuts are fresh

Kay L.

Yelp
Guys, they have donut cakes. In my head that's like, a dinner plate sized donut. Nope. They have 18 inch donut cakes. That's bigger than a large pizza. It's comically large. And it's $17!

Andrew H.

Yelp
Well, the handwritten sign says they are better than Voo Doo Doughnuts. I really can't say because I'm not a donut eater. I have tried Voo Doo and it was good, but locals say that there are many better places for the sugary treat around Portland. Really friendly folks running this place and you can call in ahead orders which I'm sure is nice, and for us it was great today since we were picking up stuff for a birthday party. Lines moved FAST. Simple and sweet. Enjoy.

Neal D.

Yelp
Sesame Donuts resurrects the feeling of anticipation and joy of going to the donut shop on the weekend to pick up a special treat, from the strip mall shop itself, which has probably never seen a major renovation (keep it that way, Sesame, it's perfect) and the smell as you approach to the humor and friendliness of the staff. The donuts perfectly balance tradition and the avant-garde. You won't see $5 donuts here but you will get twists on classics. Sesame Donuts is what every donut shop could be.

Amy O.

Yelp
I would recommend this because they have the best one if you like chocolate or Oreos I would recommend the Oreo doughnut it's really good and you can also get drinks and food there I would recommend it

Lisa E.

Yelp
Old time hang out; loved this place and wanted to support them. I appreciated that they were wearing face masks when all this started. Unfortunately, today, I went in and servers weren't wearing them anymore. This is particularly concerning since the donuts are on display in the open behind the counter where all the staff walk back and forth. I'm immunocompromised, so I guess I won't be returning - bummer as this was my inexpensive treat and reason to get out of the house once a week. Not worth the risk though

Basi S.

Yelp
Consistently yummy donuts and breakfast sandwiches. The bagels are HUGE and tasty. Best part is that they're open 24/7 so you can always get your fix. Only thing I would change is adding sweet and savory gluten free options to their menu. Otherwise.. keep up the good work. Your stuff is great!

Mariko K.

Yelp
I've visited just about every donut joint in the PDX area west of Willamette and I can safely say that Sesame Donuts is the worst. They leave a chemical, greasy aftertaste in your mouth, lack any flavor, and are too sweet. The cashier was really out of it and wasn't nice at all. We sampled the pumpkin spice, Portland creme filled, maple glazed buttermilk bar, apple fritter, butternut, and chocolate donuts. The buttermilk bar was tooth-ache inducing sweet, yet was my favorite of the bunch. The butternut and pumpkin spice were unique flavors I hadn't found in other donut shops, so it has that going for it.

Diana-Jane K.

Yelp
For over 20 year, this has been our favorite donut shop, even worth going to for a late night craving!

Craig D.

Yelp
Delicious donut, tons of options, and hardly any wait. I'll be coming back! I got the vanilla cake and my wife got the Purple Heart, but we'll try some new ones next time.

Erin L.

Yelp
Sesame Donuts has become my favorite donut shop in Portland. It has my favorite donut of all time - the chocolate kreme. I was bummed when Dunkin Donuts moved on from the west coast and along with it went the chocolate kreme. No other donut shop had one like it until Sesame came along! Also good are the strawberry frosted and the toasted coconut. They are always fresh and were still good the next day! Hopefully they will open more shops around town!

Lori L.

Yelp
There donuts are always fresh even during Covid times. The person behind the counter is courteous.

Amy T.

Yelp
The lady didn't wear gloves when handling donuts, and she put her bare hand directly into my donut bag! It was super inappropriate and disgusting, especially during COVID-19.

Patti F.

Yelp
We've driven by here a hundred times, and finally decided to stop in on this dreary (hungover) Saturday morning. The gentleman behind the counter was truly a delight! He was greeting people by name, making customers chuckle, all while keeping the line moving. I couldn't help but giggle when he put out complementary donut holes, 2 minutes out of the oven, and he told me with a wink "these are only 7 and a half calories each." I've you've ever been in a Dunkin Donuts, you'll be familiar with the layout of Sesame Donuts. There's the tried and true options, with fun Portland style combos also in the mix. I tried the lemon poppy and my husband loved his Sid's special. (Blueberry with cream and crumbly deliciousness I think.) My goodness!!!! I'm looking forward to going back already!

Matt F.

Yelp
My wife and I were excited to get 24 hour donuts last night. Drove about 20 minutes to this place due to the fact that like I said it is open 24 hours a day. We got there at 12am, and see the television on inside and the donuts on display 5 feet away from us inside and there's a sign on the door that just says, CLOSED will open back at 4am. So this place is only open for 20 hours a day. Someone else pulled up too for some midnight donuts and were left wanting as well. When you post 24 hour business and I can't even get inside at midnight, you're a lying business, and a joke to the community.

Eldon P.

Yelp
I saw a review of Sesame Donuts for having one of the best apple fritters in Portland, so I stopped in to try my favorite... What a disappointment. I was there before 7 a.m. and it seemed like a day-old pastry - hard and dry. The same was true with my wife's Maple Bar. The Old Fashion that I got was great, so were the Boston Cream. I will not be trying this again - my search for a good apple fritter in Portland continues.
