Jimmy Fallon Dined at Gramercy Indian Hot Spot Gupshup - Eater NY

"Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos’s girlfriend and former news anchor Lauren Sanchez dined at UES Italian restaurant Sette Mezzo this week, coincidently on the same night that legendary singer Paul McCartney was there, Page Six reports. McCartney was dining with his wife Nancy Shevell at the restaurant, which was once dubbed a “billionaire’s canteen” by Gotham." - Carla Vianna

Other than the tables being a little tight and small, the dinner was exceptional. We will definitely be going back there. Fresh mozzarella appetizer was amazing. My wife’s Bronzino was great. My chicken Parmesan was very good. And they have a great wine list. Oh, and I forgot to mention that that bread was phenomenal.

Google
Wonderful expensive Italian place. Spaghetti with clams was outstanding. Tira misu was great.

Google
Probably under new ownership they’ve changed quite a lot of things. The service was adequate. The food was horrible. The fried calamari was like toasted cardboard, and the Cacho Pepe was terrible. Fortunately, the wine was very good and the company was superb.

After an evening at the Frick Collection, my friend and I stumbled on to Sette Mezzo. It had been a very hot day, and we were in the mood for very special summer dishes. My friend was craving for Melone e Prosciutto, and all I could think of was to have my favorite summer dish: Vitello Tonnato which is a cold dish of thinly-sliced veal covered with a rich, creamy tuna sauce with capers. Neither dish was on the menu, and not many restaurants offer Vitello Tonnato. Our waiter, Diego was just wonderful, cheerful and accommodating. The Melon and Prosciutto dish was absolutely delicious, and the Vitello Tonnato was perfect. Kudos to the Chef! We certainly will go back to Sette Mezzo.

Google
A taste of Italy on the UES. The linguine with clams tasted as good as Da Ivo in Venice. Mascarpone cheesecake was phenomenal. Worth every penny (and yes, they take credit cards now).

Google
First off: Service was excellent. No hurry but they are able to sense when you need something. Food was mixed. I liked my veal but my wife thought her pasta (Sette Mezzo) was meh. And with the high prices, it seemed that it should be memorable.

Very good food and great service. Loved my penne dish

Google
Just an excellent meal. Broccoli soup. The chicken patanato is a top 5 chicken dish in the city. Excellent.

Yelp
Classic Italian place focused on good food located in a smaller restaurant with a cozy environment. We had a good laugh that they don't have a drink menu and all the options were "house wines" and the most basic of cocktails. My friend tried to order a cosmo with no luck. On to the food! Everything was delicious! Our favorites were some of the specials on the menu so we didn't catch their names but I loved everything we ordered. The fish, the pasta, the veal, the peach salad were all so delicious. I thought we ordered too much food but we actually ate it all since it was light and well portioned. The only dish I wasn't a fan of was the dessert which was some cake with fruit and nothing too memorable. They bring around a tray of the dessert options but I honestly don't think they looked too appetizing. I'd come back for the apps and the food but I'd probably go to a HH somewhere ahead or go out for desserts and drinks afterwards.

Yelp
We came here for lunch last week and it was so good I would definitely go back! Pricey BUT good! We were seated right away. The service was amazing. They were able to coat check your stuff if you wanted to. The place is very intimate and quiet. I had the ravioli and it was so good! I would definitely come back to try another dish. I will be back!

Yelp
The Banh Mi was huge and a great price. I think it was 8 dollars for the Lemongrass Beef Banh Mi and 5 dollars for the Vietnamese Iced coffee (small for the price! It's mostly ice. ) Over all it was a great filling meal. Great taste! Service was friendly and quick. Ambiance is a hole in the wall but kept clean. A lot of take out orders through delivery apps.

Yelp
The Maitre d' was so rude we walked out. We didn't even bother to eat there and never will.

Kathey T.

Yelp
Service was very nice and the restaurant was packed- too small but they worked it efficiently! And, the food was amazing! Our mozzarella appetizer was good (other than the mushy tomatoes!) bc the peppers and fresh mozzarella. Our entrees- gnocchi and the rosemary, chicken dish were fantastic!!! Cappuccinos at the end of the night were a perfect end with the Italian cookies. We'd go back because the food was so good but we hope they move to a bigger spot soon. That would be a home run!

Yelp
Classic, upscale white table cloth Upper East Side Italian. We stumbled in with no reservation on a Saturday night and were pleasantly surprised by the food. We had: 1. Polenta with wild mushrooms - good 2. Lobster salad - great 3. Chicken with mustard sauce - very good 4. Tagliatelle with swordfish - ok 5. Asparagus soup - good 6. Tiramisu - very good. Definitely a cozy, comfortable place that would be a good choice if you like high quality Italian.

Yelp
I was going to the restaurant is next them but it was close so we decided to check something else and we went to sette mezzo. Restaurant is small but very clean and has very positive vibes. We got a little bit confused about the wine but we didn't really wanna drink so we didn't ask more details about that . Service was fast polite. We had a misunderstanding with the mushrooms and mussels. We ask for mushrooms but the server said mussels and at that point we didn't really understand he was talking about mussels but it's fine we literally lick that plate was delicious. All the plates we got was delicious, mouth watering for real . Definitely recommend that restaurant and go back again

Kate M.

Yelp
The ambiance really isn't enjoyable. The staff is like frenzied and bumps into your chair all the time. It's not like a buzzing vibe, it's just not enjoyable. The food is ok but nothing to rave about. Bella blu or Caravaggio are much better Italian options

Yelp
Delicious food and nice atmosphere. We chose to sit outside on a lovely Sunday night. We split a few apps and each ordered our own entree. Highly recommend the mozzarella app and the gnocchi entree but everything was yum so you can't really go wrong. The only complaint we have is that it felt a little rushed. The staff kept pushing us to order even though we wanted to take our time.

Jamie H.

Yelp
If you have food allergies, I would not go to this restaurant. Despite telling my server I was highly allergic to milk/dairy 3 times (and him saying "I got it" in a tone as though I had said it two too many times), he served me a dish made with butter. To make matters worse (as if they could get worse), they attempted to charge me for the dish that I only ate 5 bites of before starting to feel sick. They clearly don't understand what an allergic reaction does to a person for the next few days. I won't be going back.

Yelp
I came here on a business dinner tonight and it was really good. I loved the polenta with taleggio and asparagus, loved my scallops with artichokes, liked the spaghetti with clams. Service was really lovely too. It was pricey, but I'd go back here on my own dime if I was stuck up in the Upper East Side for sure.

Yelp
Great food. Many interesting and delicious specials. Very well prepared traditional Italian dishes. Warm friendly service

Yelp
The food is remarkably good. My favorite is the rigatoni. It is not overcooked, as is often the case elsewhere, and the sauce is just about perfect. It is a signature dish there. Freshness is important to them across the board. Service is good but they are often very busy so one cannot expect to be "overly pampered." That said, all the wait staff is nice and seems to want to provide responsive, thoughtful service. We were remembered after our first visit. Deserts are good. The wine selection is good for a restaurant of its size and there are some especially nice wines in their selection. If you are looking for dependably in terms of tasty Italian food and dining experience this will be a good choice for you. JHC

Yelp
Amazing restaurant with a beautiful (safe and distanced) outside seating area, outstanding food and impeccable service. Ambiance. I was meeting a friend I have not seen in over a year, and being one of our first dining experiences in "forever," I scouted restaurants in advance that had safe, distanced, pretty outside dining areas. Their outside dining set up is beautiful, with draperies between tables for distancing which are not only effective for safe dining (even by my friends' standards who is a Nurse Practitioner), but are also very pretty. I love this creative distancing. Both being enthusiastic yet cautious and apprehensive about dining out, my friend also scoped out the restaurant before meeting, and asked if she could bring her pup. (Well, we all need to do what we need to feel comfortable as we venture out of our post pandemic bubbles). Outside the enclosed seating area are sidewalk tables, and the one where we were seated for the benefit of the pup was across from a bodega with its flower selection, which my friend said reminded her of being at a cafe in France. Food. All of the food was outstanding. - Portobello mushroom (special) appetizer. I had a couple bites of this appetizer my friend ordered, and it was excellent. - Beef carpaccio. One of my favorite appetizers, and it was fantastic. - Fish of the day special. The trout was grilled perfectly and beautifully presented, with zucchini and squash on the side. Both my friend and I ordered this, and it was divine. - Tiramisu. Delicious. Impeccable Service. The attentiveness of the host and servers, especially given our enthusiastic yet apprehensive slightly nervous first time out of our bubbles in forever, could not have been better. I like what I like and am particular, but am not typically "that" high maintenance customer causing servers to eye roll. However, on this first outing, I admittedly started to feel a little like "that customer", but the servers were wonderful, accommodating, and took our requests in stride. It played out like this: - I arrived before my friend and gave my name, mentioning my friend would be bringing her pup. The host knew this since my friend had stopped by earlier; and they had a table for two on the sidewalk prepared for us. - Realizing there was a meter that could obstruct my picture taking, I asked if there was another sidewalk table we could have instead. As the host happily accommodated and started clearing another table, I realized the table he was clearing was only (the required) 6 feet from other patrons, while I prefer 12 - ish plus feet away from people to feel comfortable at this point, so I approached him and said thank you, but we will keep the original table. - The server arrived to take my drink order; I wanted a dirty martini, but having a limited bar menu he said they do not have martini glasses, which was fine, but when I asked about the giant olives I like, he said they did not have them, so I paused and said I would think about it. He returned and I decided I would have the martini; when he asked if I wanted it on the rocks or chilled, I wasn't sure. All these decisions I was not accustomed to making in so long! So he, without missing a beat, brought me a chilled martini with ice on the side. Perfect. - I was trying to settle comfortably but had a bag from my shoe shopping trip on my lap, and with no where to put it. (What did we do with bags and shopping bags before the pandemic... I can't even recall.). So I asked the server if I could please have an extra chair, and without hesitation, he said "Sure... Is this for the dog?" Laughing, I told him the dog would not require a chair; it was for my bags. Despite all the newness and indecisiveness, the servers treated us and our requests with respect. They later moved us to a table inside the enclosed area when my friend (who decided the pup would stay home) and I realized how windy it was outside. The host and servers were wonderful, patient, attentive and amazing at making us feel comfortable- and by the end of our dinner - shared wit and a great sense of humor. It was an amazing dinner and night. The impeccable service, ambiance and food made for a perfect and memorable first girls night out in over a year. Highly recommend.

Yelp
An Italian friend in the neighborhood recommended this place to me. Beautiful outdoor seating, very nice and caring service. The spaghetti is so fresh and the sauce appetizing. Enjoyed the experience!

Yelp
Have been meaning to try this place for a while given the reviews. I found the food to be pretty good (not great / not excellent) but underwhelming for the exorbitant price. The bill was over 200 for 2 people who had 3 drinks between us. I'm willing to pay a lot for an excellent meal but not for this place. The prices for a glass of wine or Prosecco are beyond ridiculous. The people were very nice x service was good, but we will not be going back.

Yelp
This is the best Italian in New York City. The vongole is so good. The fish, veal, and everything!!! Ya gotta eat here as often as you can.

Yelp
I called for pick-up, as usual during COVID. It took several calls to get through. I was abruptly told "no take-out, fully booked" and he abruptly hung up! Very disappointed after dining there for decades. I suppose they have gotten popular again and have forgotten their loyal following,

Yelp
This was our second visit to Sette Mezzo. The first time we thought the food, particularly the pasta, was great so we paid the relatively high prices and thought no more. This restaurant is overpriced with only decent food. Our second visit however, the food was tasty but not exceptional. The clams with linguine came with a generous number of very tiny, fairly tasteless clams and there wasn't much sauce so the pasta was dry. Another person at our party who is vegan ordered a vegetarian pasta dish with "truffle". The waiter came over with s truffle and scraped a generous amount onto her dish. The "truffle" was tasteless and we were charged $80 for the dish. The service at this place was pushy and a bit aggressive. Prices are too high for the quality and I'd suggest you try one of the bustling restaurants nearby which also had outdoor seating.

Yelp
I work with grubhub deliveries, I went yesterday around 7:15 pm to pick up an order, there was two old men, when I arrived just wait outside and first man told me "move" but was very RUDE with me, ok, I just understand and I thought "he was busy" then I asked to a server who told me "you have to go in and tell them you need to place an order, I went inside and told to second man I thought he is a hostess and he told me VERY VERY RUDE "don't do that, i don't have service for you, get out" doing with his hands, I think I deserve the same respect as a costumer or a person, I'm working and I just needed who helped me placing an order. He didn't must to be RUDE with me and less take me out that way, I just putting this review to people know how is the staff here whit delivery guys. THERE'S NOT RESPECT WITH US.

Yelp
This upper east side place is delicious. I'm a vegetarian and they helpfully made recommendations on the food. I chose the spaghetti pomodoro and omg, I ate every single last bite. It was absolutely scrumptious, but the best part of the meal was the cheesecake. It was heavenly. Loved it, can't wait to come back.

Yelp
This is my happy place. Sometimes the food is great; other times, just okay. Sometimes the service is excellent; other times, I get the guy who couldn't care less...But, no matter what, I love it here because it is like family....And I don't want to tell you more about it, because it is my special spot, a place where I like to be alone, and I really don't want to see you there....
google avatar

Yelp
Although I've never eaten here, I have witnessed them dropped a box of squid on Lexington Ave and put it back with the undropped squid. They may clean it or not but they put dropped on a nyc Street squid with clean squid together. I also saw them drop them down the stairs and pick them up and put them back in the box with the squid that was not dropped. I leave you to decide if you'd like to eat there. This happened 5/24/18 at 8:45am.

Yelp
OBSESSED! The Chicken Milanese is absolutely too die for! They use their own in-house breadcrumb & pair it with an amazing salad. During the winter pandemic months, this has been my Friday night spot. The service is incredible, friendly & flexible. They have made me dishes that are off the menu on multiple occasions. Total 10/10!

Yelp
Go to Italian spot! Everyone there is like family. Amazing food, reputation, and fast service which I love! Espresso is great! And also the fruit tarts they have are exquisite!

Yelp
Great Italian spot in UES. I've been coming here for years since it was cash only. Love the gnocchi but decided to branch out tonight to a seafood risotto arrabiata. Unfortunately, it was not spicy but excellent anyways. Also, had veal with mushrooms (not pictures).
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
Best gnocchi I've ever had! Would come back just to have it again. The scallop appetizer was just ok and my fiancé loved the special pasta (half moon ravioli filled with ricotta and spinach with truffles on top) but I thought it was just ok. You must get the gnocchi!

Yelp
Good place; lovely service; outdoors nicely set up w ole ty of room between tables; wine selection y glass good; had zucchini rollitini w a fresh mozzarella salad ; highly recommended

Yelp
If Sette Mezzo means mediocre food and slow service, it is the perfect name. It is so typical that New York's would love this place for those two reasons. Throw in celebrities. It's a winner. Really it bordered on awful. My arugula salad was chopped like it came from a salad bar the day before yesterday, and was served without even balsamic vinegar or dressing. It was just dry. The Fritto Misto was uncooked, and the sauce was like salsa from D'agostino's. The coffee was good. The service was incredibly slow. he waiter listed more specials than there were items on the menu. Huh? Does that make sense? I ordered for bottled water. It never came. I ordered dessert, it never came. In short, as a restaurant, it is totally unimpressive. Yes, it is expensive by any standard. I would say it's a know. And if you want to spy on Woody Allen, he sits at a table under the stairs. He is very very old.
google avatar

Peter C.

Yelp
Second time eating here. The first time, I thought the pasta was great. Last night, the service was attentive bordering on overly aggressive. My chicken in a mustard sauce was delicious but overpriced. My daughter ordered a vegetarian pasta and requested that it be garnished with shaved black truffle and it was--- for $80. I know that truffles are dear but the charge was over the top. I won't go back

Corrine R.

Yelp
Couldnt be better!! Come here for authentic Italian and great staff. The gnocchi and the orange cake are must haves!

Yelp
Sette mezzo is simply the best! doesn't get better than this. great style, great food, great everything. Thank you, for being so special and awesome. I heart Sette!

Susi R.

Yelp
Food is delicious! Delivery arrived in a timely fashion. Service over the phone was polite and helpful.

Yelp
Best italian restaurant in all of manhattan. This is authentic italian food and the owners are always so friendly and funny. They make you feel right at home. This restaurant is one of a kind because they dont take credit card which is better for me anyways. I don't know why people are complaining about it tho, just go out to an atm and get cash.. and if you're money tight.. maybe this isn't the place for you.. anyways the food here is excellent and if you have any request they serve you like a prince. its hard to find good italian food and yes it is expensive but for a reason, everything is fresh and cooked to perfection and if its not then they will gladly redo it. highly recommended! thank you sette mezzo!

Yelp
I personally assign ratings not on food only - - I think ambiance, service, and quality of food for the price is relevant. The food at Sette Mezzo is very very good. No arguing here. That said - - most items are about 40-50% overpriced. Grilled vegetable appetizer is $18 for example. The ambiance is perhaps quaint but very very overcrowded - - this is a popular place, the restaurant has no qualms about packing them in. Speaking of popular, you will see celebrities -- so depending on what floats your boat, that might be worth the price of admission: usually around $100 cash per person.

Yelp
It was Super Bowl Sunday and my fiancé and I were wandering around the upper east side searching for a new place to eat. He had been looking at yelp and came across Sette Mezzo. Craving pasta, we decided to give it a try. To be honest we were very underdressed as we had not planned our night out. I was wearing uggs and tights, he a hoodie and shirt. (Not our normal attire but Sunday lazy day wear) Luckily, the staff let us eat there though we got a few stares. There was a few tables in the back so we were promptly seated upon arriving. We were the youngest people there. Everyone had to be 50s/ 60 plus, all dressed in a nice sweater or polo. It was an old money type of crowd. Walking in, the place was small and nice without being stuffy . Anyway, we started with the focaccia bread and olive oil on the table . Definitely a good sign that the food would be good just by judging the bread. Since the place is cash only, we decided to just order pasta entrees and didn't get any appetizers. (Pasta entrees run around $25) I ordered orecchiette and he ordered linguine alle vongole. Just an FYI, all pastas can be ordered as a half order. Both were some of the best pastas we have ever tried in NYC. (We are both fans of Marea, Uva, and Spasso) The sauces were light and the pasta definitely al dente. The linguine alle vongole had a total of 23 clams ?littleneck? ( yes we counted) lined all around the perimeter of the plate. Never had we ever seen so many clams in one dish. My orecchiette with sundried tomatoes and broccoli was neither over seasoned nor heavy. It had a light tomato sauce that barely covered the pasta, but was the the right amount for the dish. Overall, we had a pleasant experience. Looking forward to eating there again in the near future.

Yelp
After struggling to fit at a small table at Casimir up the road, we walked in the chill to find Sette Mezzo - we were so glad we did! The staff welcomed us and seated us at a very nice table near the front window, and the owner stopped by to introduce himself (and explain the cash-only situation). We had a beautifully prepared and presented three course Italian meal that we shared. We started with a house made rolotini of mozzarella with roasted eggplant; our primi was a rigatoni in a robust tomato and eggplant sauce with small cubes of melted mozz on it (great flavor and inviting textures); and it culminated with an amazing Veal Chop that was made over a charcoal grill (you could taste the amazing wood-fired flavor which worked great with the sliced mushrooms over the top). Accompanying this three course symphony was a solid bottle of Chianti Riserva that was a great match with each course. The service was perfect - filling our glasses to the right level (just below the apex and not glugging the wine into the glasses) and always being present without being overbearing. Yes, it is true that many patrons have accounts and the odd child running around at dinner time with an iPad can be distracting, but hey - this is the UES west of 3rd! Definitely take some cash (about $300 or thereabouts) for two and enjoy an antipasti, primi, secondi, and dessert with a nice solid Italian wine. Completely worth it - and certainly memorable!

Yelp
Went here with my boyfriend and his parents - it is cash only still and we had a great white wine, split a linguini w/ clams as an app then had a fish dish... I went here a month ago but everything was delicious!!! I will definitely be going again! Service was very attentive and friendly. A little small on the inside, but I do think they take reservations. I had also heard this was Oprah's fave! There is a restaurant on 79th and Lex that is called Il Ricchio and guys who learned how to cook here started that restaurant and it is the *best*!
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
My Mom and I had to hit this place up on our trip to New York... how could we not, Oprah made it look so delicious on her show! We called ahead and made reservations, which turned out to be a very good idea, since the place was packed when we arrived, no one without a reservation was getting in. We had a wonderful bottle of white wine, the bruchetta, the gnocchi, and the artichoke ravioli... all were absolutely delicious. Honestly this was probably the best dinner I had during our stay. My father still tells people who great the meal was. When I return to New York, I will likely return here also. I would recommend calling ahead, and bring cash... lots of it, and dinner here isn't exactly cheap.
google avatar

Kathy W.

Yelp
The food came very quickly and tasted great! The pasta was perfectly cooked. Everything was flavorful... the food was great in general. I don't know if I would call it the "best Italian restaurant ever," but it was definitely an experience and the prices were decent. My only complaint is that there was absolutely no one else there. Maybe it was because we went for a late lunch and UESers tend to get up earlier than us LESers? I didn't understand why we were the only people in the restaurant if this place is supposed to be amazing...
google avatar

Soo Y.

Yelp
Excellent foods and service. It was very nice relaxing lunch in the busy city. Chicken was well cooked and fresh, cheesecake was awesome. Service was pleasant and gave me a nice break. Wonderful dining here.
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
Been coming here with my family for years. Owners and staff incredibly friendly to the whole family, including my kids. Food is nothing short of superlative. Feel free to order something off the menu (they will always accommodate). We are always made to feel like we are at home at Sette Mezzo as well as sister restaurant Vico.
google avatar

Kate H.

Yelp
Always an incredible dining experience. The service is impeccable. They are extremely informative about the dishes and are charming in their presentation. The atmosphere is clean and cozy, perfect for a family meal or date. The gnocchi is incredible. The burata is incredible. A guaranteed delicious dinner time and time again. Reason for 4/5 and not 5 is that their crowd is always a bit stuffy, but without that crowd it wouldn't have the same upper east side charm.
google avatar

Ladida D.

Yelp
Intimate, civilized, welcoming. Delicious daily specials. For grown-ups. And priced accordingly. Not the best Italian ever, but a neighborhood gem.
google avatar

Deana K.

Yelp
I wanted to give this a four since the last few times were great but just went tonight and the service was so bad. I was shocked, to be honest. Drink orders had to be repeated at least 4 times to 2 different people until we were told the juice ran out. Ok... We were a party of 5 and a baby and give the tiniest table possible so things were knocked over. There were empty tables but we weren't moved. The cash only rule is nothing new but does it make it a little frustrating sometimes. Food (the important part): The pasta is fresh and tasty but tonight must have been an off night as the cheese tasted slightly...off. Portions seemed smaller than before and just everything seemed a mess. Do not get the salad with the beets unless you love endive as it is a very bitter salad. The lunch menu has this great ravioli with meat sauce that is not on the dinner menu. The spaghetti with vegetables is also delicious and the pasta you can choose and not feel guilty. Or as guilty. Fettuccine Alfredo is not on the menu but they can pretty much make any of their pastas on the menu with a different sauce. I love that. Forget carb-less meals here-the bread basket with the olive oil on the table is so good and so worth it with three different types of bread. Always always ALWAYS start with the fried zucchini. It is AMAZING and worth every calorie. I can taste it now. Dessert? You can't go wrong with the tartufa (spelling?). The ricotta cheesecake is fluffy and really delicious. I've tried the orange sponge cake as well but I must say, it's not my favorite but I also don't like citrus in my dessert or sweets. I'm strange like that. All in all, you should go and try it. The food is really really good. Just disappointed in the service as of recent.

Yelp
I've been going to Sette Mezzo with my family for years and it's just amazing every single time. Try the penne sette mezzo. You'll be so so happy that you did.
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
First off, this place is not cheap. We went early and beat the crowd. I thought the food was good but my husband raved about the pasta. The fried zucchini was definitely underwhelming, take a pass. Tiramisu was ok but nothing special. Overall not worth the price!
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
My husband and I went to this restaurant because it came highly suggested to us. We were so happy we went. You must make a reservation, and you must take cash. They ONLY take cash.....no credit cards, no checks, no money orders--fuhgedaboutit!!! The atmosphere is quaint and bustling like a real Italian bistro. The food was to die for. It is quite pricey, but most great sit down meals in NYC are. The wine list was excellent. We had the bruschetta for an appetizer then we both had a pasta dish--both were amazing. We had excellent service , a great meal, and a lovely time. I look forward to my next meal at Sette Mezzo.
