The Best Hotels in Penang, Malaysia | Condé Nast Traveler

"As multicultural as the city it calls home, Seven Terraces is the result of converting seven rundown Anglo-Chinese terrace houses from the 19th century into 18 two-story suites where the romance of a bygone era is alive and well courtesy of opium beds, chinoiserie cabinets, furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and Straits Chinese porcelain ware. Designed by renowned hoteliers Karl Steinberg and Christopher Ong of Galle Fort Hotel fame, this lofty property seamlessly fuses Chinese, Malay, English, and Indian influences, but it's Peranakan culture that takes center stage. For starters, Kebaya Dining Room is a destination in its own right. This is the place to discover Peranakan fare with surprising twists in a regal backdrop of high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and scarlet velvet drapes. Elsewhere, an elongated granite courtyard with fragrant frangipani trees set between tessellated walkways and tall wooden columns adds a sense of tranquillity throughout." - Samia Qaiyum

What an amazing hotel! Each of the rooms is about the size of a UK 3 bed house. An incredible renovation we very much enjoyed our stay here and would stay again no questions asked. It’s perfectly located in George Town. On the restaurant, while it is a decent restaurant Georgetown 100% is not about fancy restaurants but street food and family restaurants. Georgetown itself is one of the globes culinary centres and you’re much better off (literally) going to little India or a hawker market instead. You’ll spend 10% of the cash and have tastier food.

We just stayed at Seven Terraces for 2 nights. It’s a quaint restored building filled with antique Peranakan furniture and artefacts. We booked a 2 bedroom apartment and it was spacious. The staff are generally nice, friendly and helpful. However, the place is in need of an overhaul and maintenance works. Old furniture is great, but not an old building falling into disrepair. The walls are mouldy and the paint is peeling, some of the floor mosaics are missing and the shampoo dispenser bottles are chipped. We have visited many a Peranakan museum, but this is our first time staying in one, probably our last. The hotel’s location between a road and a school also means that whichever room you get, there will be noise from either noisy traffic or rowdy school children early in the morning. Our apartment was beside the road and every morning just past 6 am we got woken up by what sounded like a garbage compactor truck with its loud grinding noises. If you are not bothered by such things and can overlook the condition of the building, then you may enjoy your stay more than we did, especially at this price, which isn’t exactly cheap. It’s a lovely building worth a visit, maybe come for a meal at the restaurant, but I would think twice about actually staying here.

On a recent trip to Penang, I was gifted an early Christmas present of a stay here. From the moment I arrived I was blown away by the impressive look of this boutique hotel. Everywhere looks like an Instagram moment. ||I stayed in Suite Stuart 1 which was incredible with a wonderful four poster bed, mezzanine level lounge and a stunning shower room. Every aspect of a guests stay had been thought of including a complimentary afternoon tea beside the pool. ||It is little wonder after exploring the local area that I had a wonderful nights rest here. Despite the location in a busy Georgetown, the hotel was silent and well insulated against outside noise. ||Breakfast the next day was bountiful and serene. Being a late riser, I enjoyed a quiet breakfast with my wife and we both opted for the full cooked breakfast after granola, freshly squeezed juice & wonderful coffee. ||A quick dip in the pool finished off my stay prior to check out! ||Staff throughout were wonderful & I loved the ladies on reception, ||Thank you.

The hotel enjoys a very central location, within easy walking distance of Georgetown’s major tourist attractions, with Grab also readily available if needed. Our room was impeccably clean, and the staff were consistently courteous and responsive. When we encountered low water pressure at the wash basin, the issue was promptly attended to, and the team also checked in with us each afternoon to ensure everything was satisfactory. One of the highlights of our stay was the tastefully refurbished room, which beautifully reflects Peranakan-inspired interior décor and adds a distinctive charm to the experience. That said, the room layout differs from a typical hotel setup, so it may take a little time to get used to organizing luggage and personal belongings. Breakfast was fairly basic considering the price, and with so many excellent local food options nearby, you may find it more worthwhile to explore the surrounding eateries instead; which are plentiful and available from early in the morning.

Had an amazing stay at this beautifully renovated hotel. Rooms are large - on 2 floors. Excellent location in centre of Georgetown so can walk to many places to visit and eat close by. We didnt have breakfast there but had a wonderful dinner in the very popular and up market restaurant. They offered a set vegan "box" with many dishes to try and probably the best yellow curry ever tasted. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

A charming characterful boutique hotel with exemplary service. Very clean & comfortable. We had a duplex style suite with a shower & toilet on both floors. |Lovely ornate 4 poster bed. |The staff went out of their way to help with particular mention for Joyce, the kindest lady you could wish to meet. |Complimentary afternoon tea is a bonus. |The chairs directly around the shady pool are not the most comfortable but there is plenty of other comfy seating. |Great value massage too!

Seven Terraces in Penang is a superb boutique hotel that captures the spirit of Peranakan (Nyonya) heritage with remarkable finesse. Housed within a row of restored Anglo-Chinese terrace houses, the hotel feels intimate, elegant, and deeply rooted in place. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere is calm and curated—rich woodwork, patterned tiles, and antique furnishings coming together to evoke old-world charm without feeling staged or heavy. What makes Seven Terraces special is how confidently it leans into its Nyonya identity while maintaining modern comfort and restraint. The spaces feel lived-in rather than decorative, and the attention to detail—whether in the courtyard, the rooms, or the quiet common areas—creates a sense of thoughtful hospitality. It’s the kind of hotel that doesn’t try to impress loudly, yet leaves a lasting impression through texture, history, and mood. A perfect fit for Penang, and an easy place to feel both grounded and indulged.

Yelp
Love Love LOVE this hotel! As soon as we stepped into the lobby, we were treated like royalties! The staff were awesome -- they even surprised us with a bouquet of RED roses in our room. Definitely take advantage of the 4-course meal at the restaurant. Yes -- you do need to make a reservation but the staff accommodated us since we just checked in that evening. We had stayed at various hotels in Penang but Seven Terraces had us at "Hello"!

Yelp
Loved this hotel! The moment you step into the lobby and past the tall wooden doors. It was so amazing. Loved the loft-style rooms! It had personality, tastefully decorated with antiques. And the huge bathrooms with rain showers and the beautiful sink closet. Amazing service from all staff from the moment we stepped into the hotel to the last day waiting in the lobby for our flight. The local breakfast options were actually quite delicious and afternoon tea snacks were great. Location was great! Very central to everything. There were other hostels along the street so there were a lot of other travellers and it felt safe. I would definitely come back to this very same hotel. I wouldn't stay anywhere else! Abit difficult to locate at first because the main entrance is actually at the back alleyway, but there were no major issues getting picked up and getting dropped off. The pool was small but nice. The bed was a bit too firm but not bad at all.

Yelp
Gorgeous boutique in the heart of the historical district, Seven Terraces exceeded our expectations in many ways. The rooms were quite spacious, with a loft where you can spend a lazy afternoon reading and relaxing to dinner at their award winning restaurant Kebaya and also the made to order breakfasts. Service is very professional and friendly. Even though George Town can be quite noisy and urban, Seven Terraces was like an urban oasis and definitely a great place to set up base while exploring the town.

Yelp
Elegant, stunning decor. The restaurant and bar attached - the central courtyard makes it all really enchanting.

Yelp
This place has the oriental feeling, cozy and very private. We did not stay here but made a reservation in the kebaya dinning room to try the Indo and Straits Chinese nyonya dishes. The restaurant only take diners who have made reservations in advance (so don't just show up or you will be turned away). They only serve dinner at 6 pm and 8 pm. We reserved the later slot since we are late diners. The atmosphere was very traditional with fancy porcelain plates, and cutleries clicking away amongst the hushed voices of the diners. Service was ok, but I felt that it could have been better given the fact that we paid RM 120+ tax per person. The servers were courteous but perhaps a little understaffed, with attention directed towards other tables? The fees did not cover for any drinks, only the set meal which included an appetizer, an entree (one of the entree was "out of stock") with a a vegetable dish and dessert (yes, they too ran out of a few of dessert options) for each person. We tried to order different items on the menu to avoid overlapping our dishes, but alas, some of the dishes were "out of stock". Which I found kind of annoying esp given the steep price we paid for food in Malaysia - with RM 120 per person, we should be able to eat like kings and queens ! When the dishes came about, their portion was very generous, delicious, but a little too overwhelming in volume, probably to make up for the steep price. We ended up taking home almost 1/3 rd of the dishes (oh, I suppose fancy people don't do takeaways- but we we had thick skins). Toilet was located exterior to the dinning area, small space but clean. Overall, I found this place a little too stuffy, a little too standoffish. Good food but I didn't think they were worth the price.

Yelp
This is not my first time to Malaysia but it is my first time staying at Seven Terraces. If you have ever been to the area you know that this is one of a set of High End Boutique hotels owned by famed hotelier Chris Ong. I knew I had to stay here. We splurged for one of the 2 apartment style rooms. Gorgeous. The first thing that really got me was how big the room was, I mean it was a loft. Literally. And to turn all the power onyou simply stuck your key card in a slot on the wall and everything turned on. Talk about WOW factor! The room had the main bedroom upstairs in the loft, with a mosquito net to help keep those suckers at bay. The downstairs was a very open loft like space with a main sitting area, TV, comfy couches, desk area, tea area and so on. The best part? It was all in the Peranakan style! I am fairly certain all of the things in the room are real antiques or amazing recreations by local artisans. My actual favorite part of the room was the shower, the shower was huge, it took up the entire bathroom because it was the entire bathroom! There was a central drain and the shower was mounted on the ceiling like a rain shower and you just stand there in the center of this huge room showering. It feels amazing! The staff is one of the best trained staff I have ever seen, they are very attentive and very helpful making you feel very welcome. If you have the chance make sure to stop and have breakfast, there are some very traditional Malay and Chinese breakfast dishes as well and more English style fare. The real star of the food here is dinner time. The menu is very carefully put together by the restaurants chef, it is a collection of Malay and Peranakan Chinese dishes, some have a hint of fusion to them but they are mostly very traditional. Anyway, it doesn't matter what they are, because they are all so delicious. I honestly cannot pick a favorite because they were all SO GOOD! When you first check in at the front desk there are these some amazingly tall doors that make you wonder what is behind them. After the check in process you are taken through them to this amazingly huge courtyard. It is literally gorgeous and you can see how these seven shophouses were combined into this amazing jewel of Penang. I definitely recommend staying here. Also, if you are not staying here I also recommend going to the restaurant. This is a very special place, with very deep roots in the city. The owner grew up here, knows all of the local artisans and trades and it is a very authentic experience.
