"Sextant Coffee Roasters from Ethiopia-born Kinani Ahmed is bringing what’s likely a first of its kind in the Bay Area East African-style coffee experience to the city. Opening his second cafe near the corner of 16th and Valencia streets in late February, Ahmed’s drink and food menu is more than ambitious — it’s pioneering." - Paolo Bicchieri

Sextant has an amazing vibe, warm, inviting, and effortlessly cool. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere feels both cozy and stylish, making it the perfect spot to relax, catch up with friends, or get some work done. The coffee is exceptional, rich, smooth, and perfectly brewed. Whether you’re into classic espresso drinks or unique specialty blends, they nail it. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to recommend something . Plus, the attention to detail in both the drinks and décor makes it clear they truly care about the experience. Definitely a must-visit for coffee lovers!

The environment looks very new and modern. The server were pretty nice to us and they do provide free water. The latte was OK, naughty most of Tang, but acceptable.

I love to have a mocha and read a book. This place was perfect. It was clean, quiet, and nice. You order from a touch screen at the counter instead of interacting with a live human, which at first put me off. But it was easy and seamless and the live person who made my mocha and handed it to me was very friendly. I was especially pleased that they serve hot beverages in a real ceramic cup and saucer when you click on "for here".

Google
New location, new vibes! Still in soft opening phase so this location is a bit bare. The drinks are at the standard of their first location. I noticed beans on the menu but didn't see any on the shelves, so they may not be stocked yet. Some seating in the location. Looking forward to them building this location out!

Incredible coffee, largely Ethiopian roasts. Exceptional drip and espresso options. The Wired Ghandi is heavenly. Cafe has a really chill vibe. Minimal Outdoor seating but large front doors open up and give space airy feeling. This is a great spot to take home whole beans.

Google
New location. They still roast their beans at their SOMA location. Just had a tasty chai/espresso drink there today, and got some work done at their nicely designed bar-height tables. Pastries are now stocked from a bakery called The French Spot. The kouign aman I sampled was a bit more syrupy and less flaky than I would have liked.

Cozy spot, amazing coffee and I love that they serve in real beautiful cups instead of paper cup 🖤

I would stop by Sextant for a mocha a few times a week when I Iived in SoMa - so glad they opened this second location on Valencia! The owner is super friendly, and he roasts his own beans and sources them from Ethiopia (where he's originally from). The new space is minimalist & calming, with the finishing touches still coming together as they've only just opened. The mocha here is consistent and delicious. My wife's go-to is the Wired Gandhi - they make their spice blend for the chai in-house.

Yelp
I went to three different coffee shops looking for matcha/chai, and then I finally found Sextant. The chai was good, and not too sweet/didn't taste like it was from a concentrate. I really enjoyed it. Sat inside for a little, and the interior was really cute. Good service too!

Yelp
Almost easy to miss location of the chain in Mission, but perfect for a coffee pick-me-up! My friend and I ordered a pumpkin spice latte and a Frosty Gandhi respectively, and we both enjoyed our drinks. The Frosty Gandhi was a peppermint chai latte with espresso and was both refreshing because of the peppermint and comforting because of the chai spices. The shop itself was pretty minimalistic -- the interior was cute with the pink walls and the modern decor, and we ordered through a kiosk. The employee present was really helpful in answering our question about whether milk alternatives would cost extra.

Yelp
Sextant Coffee brings together great taste with minimalist vibes, making it a perfect spot to finish work or catch up with friends. Nestled in a prime location on Valencia Street--an area quickly becoming a foodie haven--this cafe holds its own with a simple yet impactful menu. I ordered a vanilla caramel latte, and it was spot on: creamy with a nice balance between the vanilla and caramel flavors--neither overpowering the other. That said, my visit at 8 AM, right as they opened, came with a couple of letdowns. The pastry case was empty, leaving me without a chance to sample what they offer. On top of that, the bathroom wasn't in its best condition--no toilet paper and not freshly cleaned, which is surprising for a cafe that had just opened for the day. Overall: Delicious coffee, minimalist charm, and worth visiting. Hopefully, you'll have better luck snagging a pastry than I did!

Yelp
The coffee selection is amazing! First gen Ethiopian founded so a great business to support over a chain like Starbucks. I enjoyed the wired Gandhi (dirty chai latte), it was warm, spiced and a great afternoon pick me up. They have wifi if you want to grab a coffee and work. The space has a nice minimalist design. The barista was also nice! The coffee is a little pricey, but I enjoyed my visit a lot

Yelp
4.5 STARS Matcha lovers know the struggle of finding a solid matcha latte in the city and beyond. Most neighborhood cafes I've been to serve matcha lattes that taste like milk with a splash of matcha made from pre-made concentrate. So, I will go out of my way and brave the anxiety inducing layout and parking situation on Valenica for Sextant. And, risk parking at a loading zone. Shhhh, don't tell DPT. Sextant makes a really solid matcha latte w/ oat milk ($8.75): https://tinyurl.com/4mf5xx7h Ceremonial grade, hand-whisked to order, the matcha latte is robust with a strong earthy vegetal bitterness that's balanced by the creaminess of the oat milk (Califia). So, why not 5 stars? The ONLY sweetener they have is sugar in the raw that doesn't melt in iced drinks. If customers are paying nearly $11 for a matcha latte (post tip), please offer simple syrup or soluble sugar substitute for iced drinks. TIA! O T H E R I N F O * Sextant specializes in Ethiopian coffee and roasts their own beans at their original SoMa location on Folsom. * This is their second location in the city that has a minimalist hipster vibe with limited seating, a mix of high tops and low top tables. Two benches outside. * Online ordering is not live yet. * Bottled drinks available. No pastries available yet. * Quiet with no music playing so you can get work done. * Free WiFi. * One restroom available. * Street parking can be a nightmare but more doable weekday mornings. Bart is just around the corner.

Yelp
Tasty drinks! Can't wait to come back and try more. Came in the afternoon and there was plenty of seating

Yelp
It was really delicious espresso! we got a cappuccino with oat milk (they use califia) and the art was incredible. Very smooth tasting espresso no bitter or acidic aftertaste, would recommend! The service was also great and the atmosphere was very peaceful and nice!

Yelp
This might be my new favorite wfh coffee shop around Mission! There's free wifi, but limited seating with three wider tables with bar stools (and the right side has more solo seats). Coming in, there is a self-ordering kiosk if you'd like to use (pretty straightforward). I am usually a fan of iced drinks, but here - they blew me away with their hot Wired Gandhi drink (espresso with chai). It's on the sweeter side, but it's my new must get drink. Highly recommend. My only wish is that they would close their front doors. A couple of bugs get into the store, but otherwise - the shop is nice and quaint, restroom and areas are all clean. I wouldn't have any loud meeting calls here, however. More of a nice and quiet spot to work and chat with friends.

Yelp
I've only been once to this spot and I loved both of the drinks my partner and I ordered. I got a latte hot with oat milk and added lavender, it was soooo good. My partner ordered an iced latte with oat milk and it also was soooo good. This spot doesn't seem like a place to do work or stay for a long time. It's quiet and there is seating but the seating doesn't look comfortable for long time seating. I'm not sure if they offer Wifi. I'm very happy this spot opened up in my neighborhood.

Yelp
I am not a coffee connoisseur but I randomly dropped in and really happy with the drip Coffee the barista made for me . She was so nice and helped educate me on coffee and drinks ! She was really nice and obviously loves her job . Will have to come back and be more adventurous with my order !!

Yelp
Seems to be a newer, and less congested coffee shop in the mission. I loved that I could sit at a table and read a book without large lines or crowds of people. Enjoyed a cappuccino. Sweet little nook at the front window, which lets you feel like you're outside while still being inside.

Yelp
Tl;dr - Unassuming but unique coffee shop in an awkward location in SOMA. Good coffee, quality service, but it's just not something I go out of my way for, given it's pretty far from a lot of anything. Slightly expensive comparatively, but the quality of the beans is there so if that's something you want, this a true blue independant roaster. It's all about the beans, dude. Been here about a handful of times, we tend to grab coffee here when Dento is closed. However, if you like strong beans with a particular flavor profile I think the coffee here would stand on it's own. The roasters are 1st generation Ethiopian, so if you know the difference between Ethiopean coffee compared to others, they are known for the bright fruited flavors that usually give off a nice nose. They offer their own beans for sale here and while I don't drink a ton of coffee these days, I've been told by my neighbors it is a great set of blends on offer. I myself enjoy their chai, which I find to be particularly good compared with other nearby coffee shops. My wife also got a great golden latte once, not sure if it's regularly on the menu but the execution on that was choice. The location is a little out there, not a lot around it so for me it's a bit of a trek which keeps me from coming in often. They have another location on Folsom I couldn't speak for, but everytime I am here the service has always been gracious and kind. Prices I will note, are a little high, but that's most likely due to the fact that these guys aren't just outsourcing their materials, they are truly doing this from start to finish, and the quality you can definitely taste. All in all they have some uniquely good drinks here, a dedication to top tier ingredients, and neighborhood friendly baristas. If they can get some really good food on offer, a step above what they serve now, they could get more foot traffic. If there was more of anything around them, that would help them immensely as well. I wish them all the best.

Yelp
Glad they opened a nice modern coffee shop in the area. Always looking for a good chai or matcha latte and it was definitely a delicious iced chai latte, haven't had a good one in a minute. We were greeted and treated nicely by the woman at the counter, who also prepared our drinks. Nice interiors as well, the pastel colors and curved shapes, love it. Needed something like this.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite coffee spots in the Mission. It's tucked away so not usually that busy, but right off 16th & Valencia (close to bart) and a great spot to work out of. Also, it's doggy friendly. While they don't have a gluten-free option for pastries, I've had some of the best mocha and matcha there. Ironic considering it's steps away from a matcha cafe. They offer an expanded alt milk selection including pistachio milk. Incredibly sweet staff. Thank you!

Yelp
Solid service and an amazing cup of coffee. Had an americano and a pour over. Everything was great.

Yelp
I love this new shop that popped up in the hood. They make damn good coffee, the workers are hard working and very sweet, and the shop is simple and not too much. I try to go here over Four Barrell to keep this cute shop around, I give them my money. I am here at least 2-3x a week!

Yelp
I was really excited when these guys from SoMa opened up their new location in the Mission. There's no shortage of good coffee shops in the area, but competition is always helpful, as it keeps everyone on their toes. Unfortunately, I can't in good conscience award anything higher than 3 stars, simply because of their outrageous pricing. Specifically, my 12 oz. single-origin Ethiopian pour-over cost a whopping $9.10. You read that right. Over $9 for a small cup of hot, black joe. I get that everyone's dealing with inflation right now, but it simply doesn't match the market. I don't care how special your "washed, organic" beans are...we're talking coffee, people. Not Glenlivet. I can easily cast a radius of 5 blocks and get something of similar quality (and larger size, to boot) for at least 33% less. Heck, I could mosey on over to Philz and get nearly *double* the size for 33% less. I can't justify it, and for that reason, while the quality is commendable, it simply didn't blow my mind in any way close to enough to warrant the ridiculous cost. If they adjust their pricing model, I'd be happy to give them another try.

Yelp
I came in here excited to see a new coffee roasting Cafe in my neighborhood. I was soon shocked and actually a little insulted when I ordered a SMALL coffee and was told it would cost me $8.70. For a SMALL f'n cup of coffee. At 1st I wanted to save face and just pay the $8.70 but ultimately I could not MORALLY bring myself to do pay that much for a SMALL cup of f'n coffee!! Have we really reached the point when we are paying nearly $10 for coffee? So many businesses hv either closed or are struggling on Valencia as a result of the Pandemic and the Center bike lane and someone thinks their coffee is so great that they're gonna charge me $8.70 for a SMALL cup of f'n coffee!!! No f'n way!!

Jeanna-Marie R.

Yelp
This is the best chai latte I've ever had!! I'm not sure what the of the barista that served me is but they were super nice and asked me if I needed any substitutions.

Yelp
the uncle running it is so nice and so passionate about coffee! the new location is such a vibe and the coffee is so so yummy
