Sextantio Albergo Diffuso, a Design Boutique Hotel Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Italy

"Sextantio Albergo Diffuso offers unique accommodation in the fortified medieval village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, deep in the Abruzzo hillside, at 1250 metres a.s.l. This spectacular hilltop village in the Gran Sasso National Park has been perfectly preserved. Rooms and junior suites are scattered in the original, period buildings. You will find beautiful, simple décor, locally woven linens, 17th-century wooden ceilings, and ancient fireplaces. All this is combined with modern technology, including under-floor heating and remote-controlled lighting. At the Sextantio Albergo Diffuso, the restaurant serves a great range of local recipes, all made using fresh food grown in the neighbouring fields. Outside the ancient walls, you can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, from climbing and hang-gliding, to hiking and horse-riding. Famous ski slopes are also just a short drive away as are many interesting old towns and villages." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

Sextantio Albergo Diffuso, Santo Stefano, Abruzzo, Italy - Explore & Book

"There's nothing quite like this albergo diffuso - meaning something like "scattered lodgings" - anywhere else in the world. Put together by a team passionate about conservation, the hotel is a collection of restored houses and suites dotted around a crumbling hilltop village in the Gran Sasso mountains of central Italy. Thanks to their efforts, the village has been saved from extinction, and its remit now is to pay reverence to its peasant past. This is not a typical hotel: it’s a step back in time, and like its sister project Grotte della Civita, it’s quite unique. With your ancient iron key in hand, you enter a room that seems largely unchanged over the centuries, with rough stone walls, uneven floors, blackened fireplaces and heavy wooden furniture. But don’t be fooled. Extensive studies were conducted with cultural institutions to bring the best of the past alive, and to join them with the best of today’s modern luxuries; so underfloor heating, hidden electrics and swish bathrooms are there too.Sit in the vaulted candlelit restaurant and dine on the kind of food that Santo Stefano's farmers might have eaten centuries ago; explore hilltop villages and castles, or walk in the majestic Gran Sasso mountains. Highs An utterly unique take on a holiday in Italy - this is an authentic cultural experience that gives you a peek into Abruzzo's past while also allowing you to live like a localMeticulous detail has been applied to the project, from the rugged iron keys to the traditional menus - and it showsIn the summer, the dark cave-like rooms are a refuge from the hot sun (it’s cooler up here in the hills); in the winter, they are deliciously cosy - scented with wood smoke and lit by flickering candlesThe landscape is breathtaking - rocky crags, crumbling castles, wild forests and lakesThis area is largely undiscovered by tourists so you can have its lovely hilltop vistas all to yourself Lows The preoccupation with historical detail means that rooms are sparely furnished with no comfy sofas, minibars or TVsThere are no turndowns, room service or fitness rooms - if you're looking for a full-service hotel, this isn't for youAt busy times it can be very expensive - but when you get there you will see the time, love and infrastructure that has been investedThough atmospheric, the rooms tend to be dark - we struggled to identify the contents of our luggage in the dim medieval lightingThe lack of an in-room phone can be a drawback, and the ancient iron keys can be heavy and tricky to use" - Lesley Gillilan

Super unique accomodation. Each room is in a separate “residence”, that had been fully restored and fitted with luxury featured. From check in to departure, the service was great, and the whole experience memorable. You probably only need 1 night here. Was stopped overnight on a drive from Tuscany to Puglia, and that worked well. The focus on local recipes and ingredients is to be commended, however that meant dinner was a LOT of bread courses…. Breakfast was more enjoyable. Overall, a great initiative, and a stunning stopover place with a twist!!

The location is amazing! I wanted a unique experience on our first trip to Abruzzo, and this was certainly it! We stayed for two nights (Saturday & Sunday) in the Casa con L'Arco suite under the Medici Tower. We entered the suite to lovely candlelight and a tasty cordial, very romantic. It was charming & rustic, but so clean, a private bathroom with a tub/shower (the handheld shower attaches to a ceiling mount to create a shower effect - the water splashes everywhere, lol, but the terra cotta tiles dry quickly) and private bedroom. They provided plenty of towels, robes and slippers! We found the beds comfortable, with plenty of blankets to keep us warm. It did get a little chilly at night, but our suite included a fireplace. My only issue with the room was that the two outlets we had (only in the bathroom) were recessed into the wall and prevented our adapters from plugging in firmly. I would add a small area rug on each side of the bed. There was a step stool to get onto the bed, which was helpful. The town is tranquil, relaxed, safe and scenic. There are amazing views with every step you take. It certainly gave me a feeling of serenity. We weren't able to get into the hotel restaurant, but we had a fabulous dinner at La Locanda Sul Lago our first night. Our server was amazing as well. She didn't speak much english, but she appreciated my attempt at speaking Italian and was delightful! Dinner at Cuore Nero our second night was fabulous as well. We took a day trip to Sulmona and Rocca Calascio (we had a rental car). So much in this area to see and do if you want to get away from the tourist crowds and just enjoy old Italy. There were a couple tour groups that came through the town, which was annoying, but once they left there was peace. I would be remiss if I didn't mention how fantastico the people and the service were at Sextantio. Anything we needed, any questions we had, taken care of right away. The gentleman at the front desk was so very helpful and kind. The porters were wonderful and careful with our bags. Value is subjective, our stay was worth every penny to us. Would highly recommend staying here.

A totally unique stay with charming and attentive staff. Rooms are like staying in a museum, if walls could tell stories! This isn’t for everyone, the village is full of uneven surfaces, dark passages and low doorways. If you’re unsteady on your feet or not an adventurous eater there are better places to stay. Special mention to Andrea and his truffle hounds - they were superb. If you want to experience a slice of true history, in luxury with impeccable service then this is the place. We loved it.

Wonderful place for a getaway. Amazing location, the town is a gem, and a very cool and comfortable accommodation. The room is so medieval and so comfortable at the same time, it’s amazing. The bed was confortable, the view form the town or the suite (depending on which one you will be staying) was spectacular. The staff at abbetagio were very nice and welcoming. Breakfast was amazing, with local specialties and other nice stuff. Lots of tracking or just drives or walks to do around. Plenty of dining options. We had hard times leaving the place.

We spent one night at the Sextantio Albergo Diffuso in Santo Stefano di Sassanio, primarily to experience the town at night and hike to Rocca Calascio the next morning. Arriving to the town by car, we had no issues finding parking, and only had small bags when checking in. The room was an experience to say the least with a locally made wool mattress and bedspread and antique furniture. ||The bathroom was modern and included a bidet. The tub was very large and we enjoyed a soak before bed. WiFi worked fine and there were outlets conveniently tucked away by the bed and desk. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the property's restaurant and were overwhelmed by the abundance of local ingredients that were beautifully presented at both meals. ||While this was the smallest of the Borghi piu belli we visited in Abruzzo, it is certainly the most well known. Walking around before and after dinner, we felt like we had the fairytale town to ourselves. Leaving early for our hike, the front desk staff were kind enough to store our bags. When we returned around lunchtime, the town was swarming with day visitors and made us glad to have been able to enjoy a peaceful night there. Overall, an incredible experience!

We stayed in this rustic b & b a couple of weeks ago, and it was like stepping back in time a couple of hundred years....except for the very modern and sleek bathroom. Loved it. Our bedroom was above the entry room with a fireplace and up a creaky pull-down staircase. Who needs a TV in your room when you stay in a historic village like this one? Breakfast every day was plentiful and varied and we ate on the patio. Dinner was in an ancient vaulted large room with a fireplace. Service was first class. It was a great place to visit and enjoy.

Despite appreciating the concept and the staff kindness , we have been given an expensive suite with a difficult access due to refit . In addition the room was noisy , it was like having the next premise guests in our room! PS the hotel director was too busy in a call and sent the receptionist to offer some food of the shop to compensate the issue we faced
