San Francisco Chefs Turn to Ice Cream Amid Economic Uncertainty | Eater SF

"The confusingly named Redwood City gelateria features Vince Bugtong (known for his time at Oakland’s Viridian) serving inventive flavors such as butterfly peaflower and hojicha gelato." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Love the selection of Asian flavors but settled on chocolate theme (dark chocolate, chocolate chip) served along with a hojicha cookie. Yum! The worker was super nice, passionate & creative about the flavor pairings as well.

Google
Such delicious gelato at this little shop. Loved the watermelon and sesame so much - perfect blend of sweet and savory and creamy and refreshing. Would totally come back and get the same. 5 stars!!!!

Google
it’s a really cute ice cream shop. I ordered guava passion fruit and pistachio flavor was really good and my friends got pumpkin spice and cooking and cream also pretty good. Service was pretty nice as well.

Google
Delicious dairy free coconut matcha gelato! The cashier was very friendly.

Google
While it is overpriced the gelato is good. Got the pistachio & Nutella combo.

The mint stracciatella is unreal. I've never tasted mint ice cream that tastes like a fresh mint leaf its fantastic and refreshing.

SF Gelateria – A Sweet Little Scoop of Simplicity Tucked between the buzz of Broadway, SF Gelateria is one of those spots that feels like it belongs in a quiet European side street—small, charming, and filled with the kind of soft-spoken joy only fresh gelato can deliver. After dinner nearby, my partner and I wandered in for a post-meal treat and were instantly greeted with warm hospitality and a counter full of colorful temptations. We sampled the Honey Lavender (a bit too sweet for me, though floral fans might love it) and the Rose Saffron, which had a nice mellow finish. But in the end, I went with my heart: Ube and Chocolate. A classic combo with just enough flair to keep it interesting. And honestly, sometimes sticking to the basics is the right move. If it ain’t broke, don’t over-scoop it. They also have pints ready to grab-and-go, which is dangerously convenient. Whether you’re catching the last of the downtown liveliness or grabbing dessert on your way home, this place makes it easy to indulge without overthinking it. Final scoop: Clean flavors, kind service, and just the right amount of creativity. SF Gelateria knows what it’s doing—and it’s doing it well

Google
Best gelato I’ve had in the Bay Area. I got Saffron Rosewater and Butterfly Peaflower, the colors are beautiful and compliments each other, tasted very creamy and delicious. A very cute shop with friendly service. Looking forward to visit this shop again very soon! On my list of favorites in the Bay Area!

Yelp
One of our absolute favorite dessert spots--hands down! We've been supporting SF Gelateria since they first opened, and it has become a go-to treat for our family. The quality has been consistently amazing, and you can truly taste the care and craft that goes into every scoop. The honey lavender is our top pick--so unique and refreshing. It's my son's all-time favorite ice cream, and he talks about it all the time. We also love that they offer pints to go, which is perfect for keeping a stash at home for those "just because" treat moments. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, and the shop itself has such a cozy, inviting vibe. Every time we're even remotely close to Redwood City, we make it a point to stop by. There's always something new to try, but we keep coming back to our favorites too. Supporting local businesses like this one is easy when the product is this good. Highly recommend to anyone who loves high-quality, small-batch gelato!

Yelp
Gelato just has a different flavor profile than ice cream. To me, gelato done well offers more rich flavors with added depth. Ice cream is more "creamy", but sometimes the flavor can feel muted compared to gelato. I prefer gelato over ice cream. Per SF Gelateria, all gelato is made in-house, as it should be. With more contemporary flavors like black sesame and lavender in addition to classics like chocolate and Madagascar vanilla, the flavor profiles were all very good--although the lavender wasn't as pronounced like the chocolate, black sesame, Madagascar vanilla, or salted caramel--which were all WOW! The service was nice and friendly. Helpful, sort of. The store itself, small with about 3 tables. A small gelato shop with coffee made to order, a nice location in downtown Redwood City. I'd visit again.

Yelp
Amazingly it's been four years since SF Gelateria opened its retail location in Redwood City, and after many additional visits there including two in the last week alone, I'm happy to report that they are moving forward stronger than ever. As other retail comes and goes, this shop as well as its catering continues to stand out, and I'm particularly impressed by the continued pipeline of new flavors including birthday cake, mint straciatella, and raspberry, all made with careful care and generous helpings of the freshest ingredients. It's always a little bit different and superior to its ice cream equivalent or other gelato offerings. The creativity and thought the business owner puts into pleasing customers is evident in everything they do, and I'm looking forward to seeing what other treats they roll out next ...

Yelp
I tried a bunch of gelato: - 4.0/5: Pistachio: They use Fiddyment farms paste, and they don't skimp; it's probably 10% by weight. It's a very small scoop, with very high overrun. Way too sweet. It was very soft. - 3.5: Black sesame. It's way too sweet, and the flavor is very weak. They use a prepared paste from Japanese Pantry. - 3.0: Gianduia. Hazelnut + chocolate. Texture is VERY waxy. The flavor is very muted. For hazelnut paste: they used to use Agramontana, but switched ot Cocoa Berry. But it's still crazy expensive. - 3.0: Caffe latte gelato. Very meh. Vince is the owner. For a Batch Freezer, they use a Carpigiani Maestro HCD (14 liter). For a pasteurizer, they use a Carpigiani Pastomaster 60 RTX (16 gallons). They use Inulin in their recipes to get a creamier texture. Hopefully that does not create gastrointestinal issues.

Yelp
Awesome little Gelato place in RWC downtown! I liked how they had a couple of non-mainstream flavors such as Saffron Rosewater and Honey Lavender. The Tiramisu Gelato flavor that they have is also excellent and very accurately captures what a Tiramisu tastes like. The staff is patient with samples and happy to let you try whatever you'd like, within reason.

Yelp
We were looking for a dessert spot downtown and came here since it was still opened late. They had a good variety of flavors. There is some seating inside. You can ask for samples. I got the guava passionfruit and it was so good. The guava flavor was strong and perfect. It was the perfect smooth and dense texture. I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
My school had a gelato cart event that featured SF Gelateria. The cart was in the student lounge and was available for all programs. The line moved fast and they had a good handful of flavors to choose from including dairy free and vegan options. It was so good that many people got seconds. For my first round, I got the tiramisu and hazelnut. The hazelnut was chocolate-y and had a light hazelnut flavor. The tiramisu had bits of the lady fingers with coffee absorbed into them. It was a bit on the sweeter side but was still good. The second round, I had the birthday cake and the sweet cream. I liked this combo a lot better. It was t too sweet and the birthday cake had bits of cake and sprinkles. Overall, I'm glad to have tried this gelateria. I hope we havelre events with them.

Yelp
One of my favorite gelato places in the Bay area and will be high on the list of dessert when in downtown redwood city. I appreciate the mixture of asian and Italian based flavors, along with the heavy scoops and very fair pricing. The worker was extremely kind and patient as we sampled and strategized our order. Small space inside, but there were a handful of tables and chairs inside, along with seating and eating spots on this block. Consistently has a line, especially on the summer evenings, and they offer a stamp card that deserves to get completed. Absolutely worth coming by.

Yelp
Omg the pistachio is amazing!!! Worth every bite. I cannot wait to go back. The creaminess, the depth of the flavor, absolutely delicious!

Yelp
Grabbed a small gelato after dinner which is perfect after eating at any of the many delicious restaurants in the area. Don't miss it!
google avatar

Yelp
The BEST gelato you will ever taste! I get pints of this stuff! Specifically pistachio, watermelon mint, honey lavender, and guava passion fruit. I'm hanging onto summer with watermelon mint and guava passion fruit. Bonus points that there's no diary in them. I'll definitely order from them again!
google avatar

Yelp
We visited Gelateria in Redwood City and had a great experience. The shop offers around ten different flavors of gelato. We got a single scoop in a cone, and it was absolutely delicious. The texture was smooth and creamy, the flavor was rich but not overly sweet--just right. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're looking for a really good gelato with really good flavors, the stop has it all with really good seasonal flavors and sorbet this place really doesn't skimp out on portion sizes either. Also, you can come and taste any of the flavors. We really like the passionfruit sorbet and the triple berry. The mint flavors are really captured as it gives a really good freshness. Definitely come check this place out.

Yelp
We stopped by Saturday night after our dinner. The staff was friendly and welcoming even though we came in close to closing time. Let me tell you, the pistachio ice cream was the best I've ever had. It was creamy and buttery. The Rose Saffron was unique and also very refreshing. Definitely stop by for some of their unique flavors!

Yelp
We are 4 in the family and we took a cup of Oreo cookies and pistachio scoops, cup of oreo cookies and Milk Tea scoops, Cup of Guava and Triple Berry scoops, and Cup of cookies and cream with Sprinkles+M&M. All of the combinations were delicious. The quantity was just right.

Yelp
Great spot! Conveniently open late if you are craving gelato at night! Great flavors, good service and good location to walk around after. Would love to come back.

Yelp
Great little ice cream place close to downtown RWC. My favorite flavors are probably pistachio and gianduia. We've been here multiple times and the quality is consistently high. Also love that they also have pints you can take home to enjoy their ice cream anytime you like. Staff is also friendly and they have some seating inside and outside to savor your perfect gelato.
google avatar

Tiffany V.

Yelp
Super yummy flavors and very kind staff! I learned so much about gelato vs. ice cream from the staff and owner, super interesting stuff! The owner learned how to make gelato in Italy, and has come up with some really interesting and yummy flavors. They rotate, so come check often. Their sorbetos are super delicious as well, we love the Fruit Cocktail and Passionfruit Guava. As for the gelato the Amarena Cherry is one of my faves so far, and my older son loves the tiramisu, my younger son, the cookies and cream. You can also buy pints and seasonal desserts! They are doing Yule log gelato cakes for the winter. We will definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Shannon K.

Yelp
I took my twin daughters here. They want to return daily because the quality, taste and service was above par!

Yelp
There's always room for ice cream for some folks even after dinner!!! We finished Indian food & the guys wanted gelato so we walked a few doors down & got some scoops in this quaint shop. Got Piatachio, Chocolate & Hazelnut. I really wanted to try the Passionfruit Sorbetto but I'd have insomnia & give or take a pound or two of weight after so I saved it for another day! Guys liked it & was a nice ending for the bday celebrant & friends in the 70°+ cooler weather!!

Yelp
Quick take: Great quality gelato and sorbetto The owner of SF Gelateria actually went through formal training in Italy. This shines in the quality products that are served. This is legit and authentic desserts. SF Gelateria also catered an event at my workplace. Thanknyou so much for the yummy gelato and sorbetto! Glad the shop is in Downtown Redwood and close to work.

Yelp
On a hot summer day my fiancé and I were craving a cold treat and stumbled upon this place and it was a perfect stop for a cool refreshment! The flavors and textures of the gelato were spot on and we'll definitely have to try more flavors! We were slightly disappointed to find they can't stock a large amount of non dairy options although the staff was kind and recommended we return as they are always on rotation. If you're in the area and craving some smooth and creamy gelato check this spot out!

Yelp
My favorite gelato in the peninsula (for now). So many good flavors that are perfectly on point. Rose saffron - mind blowing Pistachio - perfect Cafe Latte - perfect coffee Dulce de Leche - perfect creamy ice cream I'll be back all summer!

Yelp
Don't overlook this cute little gelato shop in downtown Redwood City! Delicious gelato, really friendly service, you get to sample the gelato before you decide, and the people that work there are very nice. Give this place a shot!

Yelp
I got to try SF Gelateria at work today and I have to say I was very satisfied and impressed! They offer a variety of flavors ranging from cookies and cream, strawberry, cafe latte, honey lavender and so on. I tried the strawberry flavor which is vegan and it was so delicious! It also was just the right amount of sweetness. I also tried the cafe latte flavor and loved it! I also love how the individual servings of gelato come in a compostable cup. Thats a win for the environment. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
yummy gelato place in downtown redwood city. its small and cute. the worker was nice and let us try any flavors we wanted. flavors change up every so often. i enjoyed the pistachio and chocolate. they were all pretty good though so it was hard choosing just 2 flavors. they have 3 sizes, small medium or large. each one can fit up to 2 flavors. parking can be a pain since its in downtown with all metered spots. its walkable from the caltrain parking lot too.
google avatar

Cristina Q.

Yelp
I love gelato and this is my favorite place. They have a wide range of flavors, although my favorites are traditional, especially gianduia. Customer service is outstanding.
google avatar

Yelp
Was looking for something sweet after dinner and happened upon this gelato place. It wasn't too crowded when we arrived and we were able to try the flavors before deciding what to order. Some flavors were available as single scoops while other were only available in pints. I ordered a single scoop of the tiramisu gelato and enjoyed that there were actual bits of tiramisu mixed into the gelato, instead of it being merely tiramisu-flavored. There were some interesting flavors available in the pints that I wish I could have tried, like milk tea, black sesame, and earl grey, but they weren't available in scoops. The gelato did not seem as creamy and rich as other places that I've been to. But it's still tasty and a good treat!
google avatar

Sophia B.

Yelp
Why would you go to Baskin-Robbins when you can come here for a higher quality frozen treat? They had lovely flavors which they rotate through each day. Gourmet gelato with unique palettes for your palate. Honey lavender with blueberries was delicate, light and floral that had me thinking of an elegant English tea party in the garden at spring. Milk tea tastes amazingly true to the original Taiwanese golden tea with nondairy creamer you get at a boba shop. It was very creamy and indulgent without feeling heavy. I bet it would go nicely with chocolate pieces mixed in. An added bonus that the serving cups and even the tasting spoons are compostable! Definitely recommend when you want to try something new instead of your usual grocery store gallon sized bucket of "frozen dairy treat."
google avatar

Melody K.

Yelp
Gelato anyone? Yes, please! Came here on a Thursday evening and parking was free since it was past 6pm. The staff behind the counter was super sweet and took her time to let us choose our flavors. Although the shop was small, they had a good amount of flavors to choose from. We each got two scoops, $5.95 per cup. The first cup had guava passion fruit sorbet with honey lavender and blueberries. The second cup had guava passion fruit sorbet and black sesame. We enjoyed all three flavors, but we preferred the black sesame and honey lavender and blueberries over their popular guava passion fruit sorbet. They also sell their ice cream by the pint, ready to grab from their fridge on the left corner. Both indoor and outdoor dining are available. The weather was nice at first so we enjoyed our goodies outdoors. Can't wait to try their other flavors next time I come!

Yelp
I'm a long time patron. Usually when I come in, I get something for my wife and daughter and a pint for myself. This review is for my latest visit. I wanted to treat my daughter to a frozen treat and she specifically wanted to go to the SF Gelateria because it was familiar and close by. When we arrived, the door was open and the lights were on. My young daughter needed to go the bathroom, but there was no one manning the front counter. Since she really needed to go and she knew where the bathroom was she led the way. Some curly dark haired kid comes barging in after her, immediately gives us a bunch of attitude by smugly yelling at us specifically saying that we were rude for going to the bathroom without asking and insinuating that we were there for nefarious reasons. He didn't even start out polite or nice or kind. Just went straight to 11 with an aggressive gtfo attitude. We were there as paying customers and wanted to share a moment over a frozen treat. I pointed out that we didn't see him at the front of the store and my daughter really needed to go to the bathroom but he continued condescending that we were rude. Anyways, I felt that we no longer wanted to be at the establishment and what was supposed to be a fun little diversion ended up spoiling the evening; he had made my daughter very upset and feel very unwelcome. I pointed out that we were long time patrons but he rolled his eyes at us in a clear FU to us. I think that's a terrible way to treat little kids and long time customers at your establishment. My daughter said that he made her feel so uncomfortable that she didn't ever want to come back.
google avatar

Lillian V.

Yelp
The ice cream flavors were good! Not much seating unless you sit outside. There was only one server there so it can take some time if there's a line!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
This place always has the nicest, friendliest staff. The flavors are very creative and flavorful and the colors on my rosewater saffron gelato and dragon fruit sorbet were stunning. Inside is clean and there's plenty of outdoor seating right in front. Also had an after lunch espresso which they make with Equator beans.
google avatar

Yelp
First time my kids tried gelato. They loved the vanilla flavor. I liked the Mango Flavor. This place is small and cute. I tried the chocolate flavor and it was a bit stronger but it was good. The service was good.

Yelp
SF Gelateria catered my 130 person wedding - they were punctual and professional, easy to work with and highly communicative, and most importantly, the gelato was a hit with our guests! From the easy tasting scheduling to the fast communications and great day-of service, SF Gelateria was a pleasure to work with. They were able to accommodate last minute changes with grace, and she also made flavor signs in Chinese for us - a small gesture that was very important for us. We loved working with SF Gelateria, and would highly recommend them for event catering.

Yelp
I cannot praise Shiao-Ying, the owner of SF Gelateria, enough! I inquired about catering my son's birthday with their Go Go Gelato Cart, and from the initial inquiry to going over the party details and logistics, Shiao-Ying was just fantastic to work with throughout the booking process. She actually listens to what you need/want for the party to be successful and provides her recommendations. Side note on the catering service - they bring everything needed for the gelato service: a full cart, cups, cones, napkins, spoons, and, if requested, toppings. There is also an add-on option to include a balloon garland to the gelato cart for an extra fee. We got to visit her gelato shop to taste-test the flavors we wanted to serve at the party (we decided on 3: ube, chocolate hazelnut, and guava passion fruit), and she was super easygoing and friendly. I also appreciate how accommodating and understanding she is with last-minute changes. I would absolutely hire SF Gelateria to cater another event! Thanks, Shiao-Ying!

Melissa O.

Yelp
I booked SF Gelateria for my wedding this past summer and it was a HIT! My guests are still talking about how delicious the gelato was months later. They are extremely responsive, professional, and have a very friendly staff. If you're looking for a tasty and unique way to add dessert to your next event, I highly recommend the gelato cart (you get 6 different flavors!)

Yelp
Came here after dinner one night and got the matcha gelato, it was so icy that even though I'm a huge ice cream/gelato fan, I just couldn't finish it. My boyfriend had a similar experience with his ice cream too so it wasn't just the matcha flavor. Would probably skip next time!
google avatar

Chena N.

Yelp
Unsure why the 5 stars here, maybe diff preferences in taste. This is definitely NOT gelato, more like ice cream. .:: Sweets ::. $4.75 1 scoop Piccolo: I got half tiramisu and half triple berry. Tiramisu was very chunky with dry dry dry pieces of "cake" overall weird taste, not very cohesive and a bit too sweet. The triple berry was fruity in flavors but the taste didnt wow me at all. .:: service/ ambiance/ parking ::. Service was meh. Cashier wasnt too enthusiastic. Came on a Sunday night around 7-8pm about 1 party in front waited about 10 min. The place is small, no dine in. Had some tables outside. parking was hard during the weekend. Had to park in a plaza next door. .:: COVID Protocols ::. -staff wore masks -menu board behind cashier -contactless pay

Yelp
We popped in for gelato on a Sunday afternoon and were quite pleased! The gelato was delicious (I had the pistachio flavor, and my husband and daughter each had the chocolate) and the service was fast and friendly. The outdoor seating was lovely and felt Covid safe. My 3 year old was thrilled by the wooden rocking horse and kid-size picnic bench they had available. The only thing that made me a bit Covid nervous was the fact that they are allowing customers to taste samples before picking a gelato. While I loved doing this pre-pandemic, this doesn't seem very Covid-safe to me. The people in front of us in line tried several flavors, and having them unmasked for an extended period of time, right in front of us, made me uneasy. Overall, this a great place for gelato in Redwood City!
google avatar

Ang P.

Yelp
Home made gelato! Downtown Redwood City finally has a gourmet dessert establishment open after 5pm. All flavors taste exactly like its said name which is a great culinary feat unto itself! Amazing pistachio, Dulce de leche ( tastes like the cake) yogurt flavor is unique ( tastes like the famous Yakult Asian yogurt drink which is popular among children in every Asian country but found at Whole Foods and even target these days ) The chocolate is very authentic right down to the finish which is bittersweet. It's authentic even to the finish as if it were a fine wine. Soft opening June through August. I'll be looking out for their official opening. I'm sure there will be a free taste.
google avatar

Yelp
Located in downtown Redwood City across from Pho Dong, there's only street metered parking or a Caltrains parking lot. Very small shop w/ 2 small indoor tables and a few tables in the parklet. Ask for a loyalty scoop card to get a free Medio cup after your 10th purchase. They're unable to post their flavors on their social media because the owner said they change it multiple times a day due to availability since they make the ice cream in the shop. You can also vote for upcoming flavors on the white board in the left side of the shop. Plan to eat immediately as the ice cream starts melting right after scooping. They do have insulated bags for sale if driving more than 10min. Taking scoops to-go w/ a lid does result in much smaller scoops since they only have flat lids. Since the ice cream melts so fast, it's best to eat there anyways. Pricing Piccolo: ($4.75) 1 scoop Medio: ($5.95) 2 scoops Grande: ($7.25) 3 scoops Toppings: ($0.50 each) Caramel sauce / Whipped Cream / European Fan Wafer / Hazelnut Rolled Wafers / Sprinkles / Chocolate Sauce Pint: $12.95 Drinks: $2.50 Flavors 6/29/2021 Peaches & Cream Fleur de Sel Caramel Triple Berry Cookies & Cream Stracciatella (Italian Chocolate Chip) Earl Grey Honey Lavender w/ Blueberries Horchata* Strawberry Sorbetto* Lychee Sorbetto* *Non-dairy/Vegan Ordered 2 Medio: one with Earl Grey & Stracciatella and the other with Strawberry Sorbetto & Peaches n Cream. I could barely taste the Earl Grey unfortunately but did enjoy the chocolate chips in the Stracciatella. The strawberry sorbetto was super refreshing and the peaches n cream very creamy. Great on a warm day.

Yelp
I would give 3.5 stars if a half-star was allowed. Similar to other "gelato" places in the area, this one doesn't seem to know how the texture of gelato is meant to be. This is basically ice cream with the gelato name on it! I had the gianduja (chocolate hazelnut), which had tasty flavor, but you are only allowed to get ONE flavor in a small (another perk of real gelato shops is that you can usually select 2-3 flavors, since it's soft and easy to smoosh into a cup). The wooden spoon was also a huge turn-off and made my gelato taste like wood. I wouldn't return, simply because I am a REAL gelato fan and this just is not it.
google avatar

Sharon C.

Yelp
I am not a gelato connoisseur by any means, but my husband and I stopped by here on a whim and were blown away by the flavors. We shared a two scoop gelato ($6.00) and got one scoop of rose water saffron and one scoop of hojicha (Japanese roasted green tea). Both flavors were AMAZING and complimented each other very well. I'm excited to come back and try out other flavors in the future- especially those that you don't normally see (like dragonfruit and Earl Grey). A great addition to our downtown!

Yelp
Okay. Like wow!!! I had the triple berry and cookies and cream. Both are amazing. Just found out that since they make the gelato on site, they do this with half the fat of other gelato's and using the game by delivering an amazing taste. Great service.

Yelp
TLDR: Gluten Free gelato with compromises. Still the best in Redwood City. 9/11/21, Saturday ~8:00pm Worth a Visit? YES. Redwood City has a serious lack of dessert option after dinner. Worth a dedicated visit? NO. Traditional gelato just hits harder. Worth the price ~$5? YES. It gets the job done (2.5/5) Ube Gelato (single scoop): Nice and creamy texture. Very mild flavor. Even more mild than a standard vanilla. Some hints of Ube, though you couldn't identify it with your eyes closed. Very light coloring (no artificial colors). A safer/standard flavor would have likely been better. Its good GF gelato. It fundamentally can't be as rich/creamy as your traditional gelato with no restrictions. Considering that, it's still good, and by far the best dessert option in Redwood City. Service is fast, it hits the spot. But it can't hang with your Gelatio's of the world. Even Salt & Straw ice cream is more rich/indulgent. This was my second time visiting. Will likely be back.
