The Best Restaurants on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Shabu House has multiple locations around the city, but its Ocean Avenue spot is a particularly quiet and cozy destination for the comforts of Japanese shabu-shabu. Diners gather around a simmering pot of broth and dip in thinly sliced and bundled beef and an array of veggies." - Becky Duffett

Very enjoyable hot pot place. We ordered 2 large dinner tray vs all you can eat for three people. The quality of meats was good and fresh, we picked beef and pork. Vegetables were plentiful, just wish they gave a little more udon noodles. Staff was polite and helpful. By the end of the meal, I was full and it was topped off with ice cream. Choices were mango, green tea, and red bean. I would for sure go again.

As they say. If you want to know a good restaurant, go to where the locals go, and you won't go wrong. This restaurant has very interesting and tasty food. I had to ask how the shabu is made, given that what I got was raw meat and a lot of boiling soup. The minute I was shown how it worked, it definitely became a blast. I will be looking for Shabu houses in other locations.

Had dinner here as we were celebrating. Had the spicy miso and the chicken ginger broth. My partner liked the spicy miso a lot (I don't eat spicy) and I loved the chicken broth to the point of drinking it as soup. Ginger is just a hint, definitely not overpowering. For the meats we went for all beef pork and lamb, And my very favorite was the beef; he liked both beef and pork. We got 2 regulars but thought there was more than enough veggies and meat. $19.99 pp seemed fair although I'd love if it was cheaper (lunch is $16.99). AYCE is $33, which seems like a lot to me since regular or large should be enough for almost any person. The veggies includes some tofu, leaves, mushroom, and carrots. Also included is udon or rice, and green tea/red bean ice cream. I loved almost everything except for the ice cream, that I found very far from the supposed flavors. It also took forever for our pot to start boiling (didn't count but at least 10min, and we were starving) and we asked the waiter after 3min, they seemed to check on the boiler and say it was ok, but after 9min we asked again and that waiter said it was in the wrong setting...so... thanks for wasting us some time.

Google
Great place to go to with family of friends. Staff are nice and attentive. Meats are freshly sliced. We had the spicy tonkatsu and ginger chicken broth. Good for those cold winters.

Google
It was so good! Go with a bunch of people so everyone can share everything. I honestly choked during dinner, because it was really hot and didn't chew my food.... I threw up at the table and we all still finished our plates. 5 stars for sure!

Google
The servers are the literal worst! Sucks that they’re automatically tipped for parties of 6 or more but gosh this services is horrific! I used to go when this was called Shabu House and the employees were the literal best. Now they have the most inconsiderate and annoying employees. They seems to be annoyed at every single request. I saw them take other tables orders and the eye rolls were so bivouac from every single staff. AVOID THIS PLACE! They’re such a rip off and will up charge for every single thing.

My recent visit to Shabu House on Paloma in Burlingame left me with mixed feelings. While the restaurant offers some redeeming qualities, there were notable drawbacks that affected the overall dining experience. Let's start with the positives. The meat quality at Shabu House was commendable. The thinly sliced beef and lamb were fresh, succulent, and added a delightful touch to the hot pot. If you are a meat enthusiast, this might be a redeeming factor for your visit. However, the same cannot be said for the overall hot pot experience. The broth lacked the depth and richness that I've come to expect from a top-tier shabu-shabu restaurant. The variety of vegetables and noodles provided were standard, nothing to write home about. It seems the focus here is more on the meat than the complete hot pot experience. The atmosphere at Shabu House is decent, with a simple and clean interior. However, it lacks the cozy ambiance that some other hot pot establishments manage to achieve. The tables are adequately spaced, providing a level of privacy, but don't expect any special decorations or a particularly memorable dining setting. Parking around Paloma Street can be described as challenging at best. Finding a spot nearby can be a time-consuming task, especially during peak hours. Be prepared for a bit of a walk if you're visiting during a busy evening. Unfortunately, the service at Shabu House left much to be desired. Our order was repeatedly confused, leading to frustration and unnecessary delays. The staff seemed overwhelmed, and the communication breakdown impacted the overall dining experience negatively. To add insult to injury, when we brought the issue to their attention, the resolution was far from satisfactory. They failed to deliver on a small Sapporo we had ordered, and their response was lackluster, leaving us feeling dissatisfied. Take note my friend have been a patron of this place for 12 years and was really upset that this was our experience. You can overlook the taste of food if the service is superb however I don't think we will come back to this place with the embarrassment that we have experienced. In conclusion, Shabu House on Paloma offers a mixed bag. If you're primarily seeking high-quality meat for your hot pot, this place might be worth a visit. However, be prepared for a less-than-perfect overall experience, with an average atmosphere, challenging parking, and a service that leaves much to be desired. Consider exploring other options in the area for a more well-rounded and enjoyable shabu-shabu experience.

Google
First time at a Japanese style fondue restaurant. My friends all referred to it as a "hot pot" where we cooked our own beef, pork, or lamb with vegetables. A few styles of oil or broth and then put the meat and vegetables in the boiling pot and in one minute, you have cooked meat. Very good deal with the all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink driver option for 44 dollars!

Yelp
Why is their phone number not working? We have had dinner there a few times and enjoyed it. However it's impossible to reach them.

Yelp
Typical Japanese shabu shabu place with good portion sizes. The amount of meat they provide for a regular portion is quite good, although the large order did not seem to be noticeably more than the regular. The meat was good, but not the best cuts, and they also provide a generous portion of vegetables. The broths are pretty good; you can't go wrong with choosing any of them. And make sure to stay for the ice cream at the end! They only have space for a single pot for a 4 person table (and 2 for a 6 person table). This works if you have one or two people where you can get your own broth, but with more, you may need to share, which isn't ideal. Service is pretty good; our waitress was very attentive. However, the location seems a bit dilapidated and decor wasn't very nice. Was a bit dark in the restaurant.

Yelp
So many good years and after many postponings of the closing date, we are sadly finally here. Many of you do not use facebook so I wanted to give a quick update regarding closing + a message from the owners themselves.

Yelp
Update 9/29/24!! We came here twice in the last month (including last night for dinner when we thought it was going to be our last hoorah) when we heard they were closing and changing to Shabu Club. Well good news! They are not closing anymore!! Turns out something happened where the change to Shabu Club is not going through. Well I'm ecstatic to hear this because we love this place. The menu is simple but the food is consistently good. Service is good, can get a bit lacking when they are busy, but what place isn't. My husband and I have many memories here and we were so relieved to hear they weren't going anywhere (just yet).

Yelp
Service and cleanliness has really gone downhill here. I came here with a group of friends midweek for a post-workout dinner, and although the restaurant was only maybe 50% full, it took us quite a while to get seated. Then it took a bit of time to get our order in. After that, we had to constantly ask for things that we needed: sesame paste, water refills, bowls, ladles, etc. It felt like we were constantly bugging the staff, which we felt bad about. I think they had a million things to do at once, so they can't preemptively act on what the customer might require. Instead, they just do as they are told because it's a little easier to operate that way. There was one older employee in particular that was working so hard! Bless his soul. A table of 6 only has 2 pots to share. I think it would make sense to have 3 pots, but the tables aren't set up that way. You can request split pots to make it easier. There's 6 broths to pick from and it's a limited menu of regular vs large size pork/beef/lamb (or combo of 2 meats), as well as a vegetarian option. There's also an unlimited food or food/drink combo with a time limit of 1.5 hours. Obviously, the whole table has to partake in the unlimited option. I thought the broths were okay, nothing special. The veggie plate is also rather mediocre. You get some napa cabbage, spinach, mushroom, kabocha, tofu, asparagus and some udon noodles. It's not much variety and not really worth the price you pay. You also get the option of rice or noodles with your meal, as well as a scoop of ice cream. We were given a choice of green tea, red bean, or mango. Only half of my group opted in for ice cream. I'd skip the mango. It tastes completely artificial with no mango essence, and more of a floral rosewater flavor. Automatic 15% service fee is added for parties up to 5, and 18% for parties of 6+. It's been years since I've last visited this restaurant (very limited shabu options in the peninsula!), but based on this experience, I doubt I'd come back.

Yelp
This 5 star review is for my girl Marissa! When you get amazing food with amazing service, you get a happy tummy and happy mind. Found my way to Burlingame because boyf and I were craving hotpot and checked out Shabu House. We were surprised by how good the meat quality was and how there was a wide range of sake options! The veggies were not the best quality but it was still really good in the broth. Space is quite big so I would imagine that wait times on an off day would be none. Big shout out to our server Marissa who made sure we were consistently doing okay throughout our meal and making sure our overall experience at Shabu House was perfect. I will be back more than I will want to drive out here!

Yelp
Came to Shabu House for dinner with a group of 4 on a weekend evening and was able to be seated upon our walk-in. The restaurant itself is casual, with heating elements built into the table for the shabby pots. Apparently the owner hand built all the tables themself which is a pretty cool fact. Upon being seated, we were quickly and warmly greeted by our waitress, Yenni, who guided us through the ordering process. We opted for American style Kobe beef and lamb shabu shabu. The hot pots themselves are split so you can order two different broths to share in one bowl, which my side of the table opted for tonkatsu and spicy miso. In addition to the meat, the table is also provided assorted vegetables, rice, and udon noodles. I also added two ordered of agadashi tofu which is something I almost always order if it's on the menu. Both the beef and the lamb were well marbled and flavorful. They were sliced to a perfect thinness that allowed them to be cooked quickly in the broth. My tonkatsu broth was rich and flavorful. The provided veggies were also in a good quantity that I didn't need to ask for more. After eating, you have an option to order some complimentary ice cream. I opted for a matcha scoop which was very tasty with bites of sweetness and bitterness.

Yelp
My party came in for a reservation at 7:30p and were seated right away. The food is always consistently delicious. They have sesame oil available upon request. Parking can be a bit hard to find. I'm not able to finish the whole entree, so I share with one other person and order an additional meat plate. That way the vegetables don't go to waste. The only downside is that for large parties, gratuity is included and for our case, we did not feel the service provided was worth the gratuity we paid. It was very difficult to flag down a server and our requests for napkins, extra broth, water and tea took ages to come out. We were never even checked on. Good thing their food is yummy...

Yelp
It's was cold raining night and we had a craving for Shabu. The closest of the Shabu House locations is in Burlingame, so we headed out toward the peninsula. After a couple times around the block we found parking not to far from the restaurant. The Burlingame store is spacious and we were seated right away. We opted for the AYCE $38 per person. There are three choices of protein to choose from Beef, Chicken and Lamb. The veggies plate include Napa, spinach, shiitake & enoki mushroom and tofu. 6 soup bases , ginger chicken, miso and tonkatsu. Service is ok but spotty when it's busy. Street parking in downtown Burlingame is hard at peak dinner hours. The ventilation at this location is good with the high ceilings.

Yelp
I really enjoy this restaurant. The meat is top notch and better than any hot pot place in the bay. Unfortunately it is toooo busy and the servers are definitely over-worked. Next time will try to come right at 5pm to see if it's better. We usually don't order the all you can eat because we don't have all you can eat stomach haha. Can't wait to come back again.

Yelp
I used to frequent Shabu House often but I feel like the quality has gone down since I first started dining here. I usually order an a la carte regular Kobe beef plate with spicy miso which also comes with veggies. The meat quality is fine but it feels like they pre-prep all veggie platters in advance as the veggies always look wilted and squashed as if another plate was stacked on top. They also no longer serve you sauces, rather they have empty sauce bowls and large containers of ponzu and sesame sauce that you self serve. I personally don't like these refilled bottles because you don't know how many people have touched the bottle or if their hands are clean (the bottle felt a bit sticky)... and for the price you're paying and the fact that they include a 15% automatic service charge on your bill it doesn't seem like a lot of effort to have the employees prep this for you. For basically $30 after tax and tip I'm expecting better. (They do have happy hour between 5-5:30pm for 10% off)

Yelp
This is the spot to go if you're craving shabu. It's a no frills spot, limited menu in terms of proteins (lamb, beef or pork) but all of them are high quality! There are a handful of broths to choose from: my go is spicy tonkatsu. The soups are split half and half so you can get two broth flavors if you'd like. I also love that they have fresh chopped garlic on all the tables. Some places offer the jar kind but this definitely tastes fresh. The restaurant is pretty spacious and every time I've gone, it's packed! A good sign to a good restaurant. Shoutout to the great service! All of the servers are very helpful and attentive.

Yelp
Let me set the scene for tonight's events: It's loud, it's poppin, my group of ~10 is enjoying ourselves when, oh no! a little kid from the next table over walks by and knocks my water all over my jacket and the ground. Luckily, the lovely server Yenni noticed the accident even over the peak dinner rush commotion and rushed over with a new drink, a bunch of napkins, a mop, and a wonderful attitude. My whole table was touched by how much she cared about our dining experience and her service was definitely the highlight of the night. The hot pot meat was really good too Overall if you're looking for service with a personal touch, tasty hot pot, and energetic vibes, this is your place!

Yelp
I love Shabu House, ate here for my birthday the Kobe beef did not disappoint. I love the broths, had one tonkatsu and one miso. The group enjoyed the healthy meal with the fresh veggies and udon noodles. The free ice cream you get a choice of green tea or red bean is a great palate cleanser. If you want a reasonable, healthy and delicious meal, Shabu House ticks all boxes!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm going to keep this simple: this spot has some of the best beef available for shabu shabu. The vibe is very casual, and 2000's R&B will generally be playing in the background. Perfect spot for a lowkey casual date night out (especially since you'll probably be stuffed afterward and in no mood or condition to be sexy afterward). If it's your first time then try out the other meats, but every time I come here I ask my wife to remind me to only order beef next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Shabu house has a wide assortment of choices from a regular, large, and AYCE. They have appetizers and a few sauces and oils for dipping. They are closing at the end of the month. I heard they will become shabu club which I have had in SF. If the same then the menu is similar. I will miss shabu house and it has been great coming here!

Yelp
Came in with my girlfriend on a sunday night andngot a table within minutes of stepping in which was great. We came before on a busy night long time ago and got really good service and a thorough explanation of the menu but unfortunately this was not the same this time. There were only two servers and what I assumed was the manager. The smaller girl server was nice but wasn't our server so the other one took our order, she also took both menus instead of leaving one so we could take a look and order more. Not sure if she prepared the broth but we got the spicy miso and ginger chicken and the miso was really bland, our meat and veggies came but we finished it real quick, waited about 20 minutes trying to flag our server or anyone to order more meat until the manager came and took our order, we didn't order that much anymore because it was getting late and we only heard from our server ONCE on a slow night might i add and again only to ask for the check, we were done with this place and just wanted to leave. We wanted to split the check and it was weird how they took their time and appeared to look panicked pointing at us. I over heard something about our cards and it took almost another 20 minutes to get our cards but this time from the manager. Nothing suspicious until we left and I got a notification on my mobile banking saying they charged my card the whole amount and then charged me for half. The manager nor the server didn't say ANYTHING about what happened but luckily I had enough money on that account, unbelievable.

Yelp
Shabu house was amazing! Honestly I had never tried hot pot before this and I can't believe I waited so long! Soooo delicious! We got the spicy miso broth and tonkotsu broth, with beef and lamb. Comes with lots of good veggies too! We got some beer and hot sake as well as tried all the flavors of Soju. Lychee was my fav! Overall it was a really fun atmosphere and the food was amazing! I will totally come back

Yelp
Not only is this my favorite Shabu / hotpot restaurant, I think this is my favorite restaurant, period! I think I've probably been here maybe 6 or 7 times or so since things started reopening again a year ago, and it's fantastic every time! On to the food! The meat, veggies, and broth are all consistently great and tasty each time! I always get the all you can eat, and if I'm with my friends that like to turn up, I get all you can eat and drink, and we let the sake flow, lol! Aside from that, the service is always fast and friendly. As far as wait times go, I'd make a reservation on weekends. But on weekdays, you can usually walk right in with little or minimal wait. Although I live an hour away in the North Bay (I have a lot of friends in the Peninsula), I have no problem with driving here for a meal because I know I'll be more than satisfied every time!

Yelp
Came here for a family dinner (party of 9) on a Saturday night. We had made a reservation on yelp so we got seated right away. Big family gatherings are always kind of hectic, especially with difficult Asian parents- of mine, that is. That being said, Christy was kind, patient and just amazing. Sorry that my family was so much and thank you a million for not throwing a hot pot at us lol. You had a great smile and if the owner/manager is reading this- give that girl a raise! She was awesome! I'm not really a hotpot fan but the meats were really fresh and the broths (we got miso & tonkotsu) were great. It was all you can eat and I also got a side of udon (gotta have my carbs), so yeah I was REALLY full at the end of the night. Great experience, definitely recommend!

Yelp
Shabu House - one of my favorite spots to eat Japanese fondue. The quality of beef at this location is by far better than many locals and that's why I keep coming back. Service - on Yelp there is a reservation slot for piece of mind booking. Although all the reservations was booked for the evening, they do take walk-in's and I was able to walk in and be seated right away last table at the bar. With a nice view of the chef slicing meats. Good time to walk inn would be when they open at 5pm and peers getting off work. By 6pm it's a packed house. The front manager is always very attentive and everywhere at once. With a front crew of 10 peers , service was above and beyond. With the front and the back connected moving as one unit as it's evident Food - plain and simple pure Japanese fondue. Protein beef or pork + veggies spinach, tofu , enoki mushroom , dip dip in broth. Dip dip in sauce I have been here many times seen the good and the bad of the beef. On this most recent visit I found the beef to be above average Look forward to the next time here.

Yelp
Coming off an intermittent fast, haven't eaten in 18 hours, I knew I wanted to eat a big meal. It was a weekday and found myself near Shabu House and decided to go with their $41 AYCE option. I hadn't been in probably over a decade, and I honestly don't know why I waited so long. They have a couple different AYCE options, and the $41 one includes more meat options (angus, kobe, kobe lean, kurobuta pork, lamb) plus your veggies, rice, udon, and ice-cream. Pick your broth and they'll slice your meats to order. You can only order one meat option at a time, and their portions are big, so if you aren't sure you want a lot of something, as for a half order to start. From the meats, I really enjoyed the kobe lean and the pork the best. Those were the two I kept going back for. You can build your own sauce with a sesame and/or soy base, which you can dress with garlic and green onions. This is awesome because the sesame sauce is delicious and makes for a good dipping option for the meats. The spicy miso broth wasn't spicy, but still tasted good when cooking everything. My mom would've been so proud, as i finished my entire plate of veggies lol With a canned coke and 20% tip, it came out to around $60. More than I like to spend for lunch, but I really didn't need another meal the rest of the day. For me, it was worth it. I used to find solo dining tough, but the pandemic has helped me to really embrace it. If you have never done shabu by yourself, I highly recommend trying it out. Eat at your own pace, shorter wait times, all positives. I definitely will be back for lunch next time I'm super hungry.

Yelp
Be prepared to look for parking for awhile unless you're lucky. When we got here though luckily there wasn't a wait until after. The service was very nice! Just took awhile to get out meats. But everything tasted fresh and the place is clean and cute. Looks like there was a matcha soft serve that used to be inside and sad it's closed and we can't try it out. But it's ayce so not bad!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Went here for a birthday party, this was a good place. Pros: soup base was good, meat was good the lamb was not overwhelmingly gamey, had big portions and the Kobe beef fries was really good! The service was fast! Ice cream comes with the meal! Cons: when it comes to sauce there wasn't a lot to choose from. Parking: it's in Burlingame there was a parking area around the block. Besides that there's plenty of street parking.

Yelp
We love Shabu house! We usually go for special occasions because AYCE is a must but for 5 it can get pricey! This time we went in on Mother's Day, Sunday night. I recommend making reservations because they do get busy. If you come in for happy hour, 5-6pm everyday including weekends, you get 10% off your total bill. Children under 5 are free & I think up to 10 are $20. Don't quote me though as prices tend to change rather quickly nowadays. For AYCE it's ~$36 and AYCDrink is ~$40. But it really is worth the price! Choice of Beef, lamb or pork. Veggies, udon, rice are all included. And at the end of your meal you get ice cream. Our girls love coming here and getting to cook their own food. They eat quite a bit too which makes it worth the trip. The kids and I usually get the beef while my husband opts for the lamb. Service is pretty amazing for a place that can get quite busy. They are really on top of everything and you get your refills quick so I feel like you get to eat more with how quick the service is. Sauces are no longer placed in bowls for you, they are serve yourself from the bottle itself. Much better and less wasteful since our girls never really used the sauces. At the end of your meal, ice cream is served. They now have black sesame along with the original options of red bean and green tea. Shabu house is by far our favorite place for hot pot. As nice as it is to have a create your own sauce bar, I love the simplicity of the 2 sauces and limited food options. Too many options gets crazy especially with a large party. Shabu House does everything quite perfect for what they offer and I wouldn't change it one bit. We always leave extra full, happy and very much satisfied. Just talking about it is already making me want to plan our next visit.

Yelp
Had a great dinner here with a coworker last night. The all you can eat deal is great and we both left stuffed. Service was great but got a little slower as they filled up for the evening. The decor could use some work for sure but I am sure people go for the food not the view.
google avatar

Melanie Y.

Yelp
Can I just say Yenni, our server, was absolutely wonderful? She was awesome and got our giant party of 8-10 people everything we needed during our time here. Total rockstar! The food was really good and we got AYCE meat! I shared a spicy broth with a light non-spicy miso hot pot base with my table. We ordered multiple plates of lamb, pork, beef, and...more lamb. We also got ramune (such a nostalgic drink - I haven't had it in about a decade!), as well as a few other random dim sum dishes. We topped it off with delicious lychee ice cream that I just wish I could take home with me and eat everyday. What a fantastic shabu experience! Hot pot and shabu shabu is always best with friends and family - this place is worth the try.

Yelp
Been going to this Shabu House for years, and never wrote a review. The reason this restaurant is so popular is because of consistency. I had a random craving and my friend and I decided to get Shabu here. On a random Tuesday night I was able to walk in. I waited only a few minutes as they were cleaning up, plenty of time since I was still waiting for my friend. They usually have the warriors games on here. The last time I was here I was celebrating my birthday. Good, quick service. Spicy miso with the beef wagyu is my go-to. Even the regular plate is satisfying. I'll be back again soon.

Yelp
This place was very delicious! Lively and lots of people inside on a Friday night. The restaurant is fairly big. We walked in and for a party of 2 we're able to be seated after 20ish minutes The service was very fast considering we got all you can eat. Most other restaurants take their time to help you order more. At shabu house they constantly were slicing meats and getting it out to tables. The food was delicious! Great cuts of meat and the broth was good. I wish they had a few more options for broths. Will definitely be going back!

Yelp
3/27/22 Shabu House is an all-you-can-eat-and-drink hotpot place. Parking in the area was not bad. We got there around 7:30pm and it was busy. We waited 15 minutes for a table. When we sat down, the table was cleaned and set with menus and water. You can choose one soup base or you can do a split. For us, we got the split soup: regular tonkotsu for me, spicy tonkotsu for him. Included is a bowl of rice per person and a plate of veggies: one mushroom, two carrots, some pieces of tofu, spinach, cabbage and a pinch of udon... Anything extra like more noodles, appetizers are extra. We could only do two rounds because they give you a lot of meat on just one plate. The quality of the meat itself is also pretty good. Throughout our time there, the staff were very attentive and checked in with us on the regular. They made sure we had enough water in our cups, more broth in the soup bowls and napkins since my boyfriend likes making everything spicy. At the end of the meal, you can choose between the ice creams they have: red bean, matcha and black sesame. I got a matcha and a black sesame since he wasn't going to have any. The ice cream is super refreshing after a heavy meal like that; it helped me settle my stomach. One thing to note is that a 15% charge is already included in the bill. I will very likely come back to eat here. I'll try for more rounds next time if possible haha!

Yelp
Best quality meat in town! Nothing can beat the Kobe beef from Shabu House. This restaurant is huge and can accommodate really big parties. Perfect for dinner with some friends. Love the ambiance and R&B in the background. They offer Bar seating which accommodate 1 pot per person. Their Ginger chicken soup is the best base choice! And of course the beef is delishh.

Yelp
My son chose this spot for his birthday dinner. We all chose the AYCE version, and 2 of us the AYCD option, includes beer and sake. The quality and quantity both very good. Our waiter was a little harried, perhaps she was filling in for an absent employee, very pleasant and accomodating tho.

Yelp
Love it here. Definitely my favorite shabu place in the Bay Area. The food is great. The employees are great. The place is spacious. I immediately made a reservation for one last meal when I heard the news. I'm bummed they are closing but I understand that it's time to move on for the owners. I sincerely wish everyone here well in their future endeavors.

Yelp
Great place for meat lovers, I can imagine high school boys coming in as a group to get the best shabu shabu deal for them. Perhaps I just have high expectations for shabu shabu but I wasn't a fan of their lack of attention on ingredient prepping. I think they can do better as an AYCE shabu shabu place. I got AYCE, which has 3 meat selections: beef, lamb, and pork. Nothing to comment on their meat because they're solid (pork was my personal favorite). Assorted Vegetable plate: Napa cabbage, spinach, carrots, small tofu, shimeji and shiitake mushrooms They have bits and pieces of udon noodles in the assorted vegetables for some reason, and their carrots are carrot sticks that come in bulk (like the one you dip ranch dressing in). No enoki mushrooms, no fish cakes, and weird small pieces of tofu -- the vegetable plate prep was weak and it felt like they were just throwing in the veggies from the packaged spinach & carrot from supermarkets. They have shoyu and sesame sauce in every table, as well as minced garlic and green onions. Amazing that they don't skimp out on these. You also get ice cream (mango, red bean, and green tea) at the end. Oh and the broth! Would definitely get tonkotsu and spicy tonkotsu, but that's just my preference since it went well with udon noodles. Miso ones taste exactly like miso soup so you already know how it's gonna be. Solid service, would recommend making a reservation. It's loud and bustling in there and pretty chill, I saw a lot of families with kids/large friend groups.

Yelp
As a self proclaimed hot pot connoisseur who used to go out to hot pot every week (prior to the pandemic), Shabu House has always stood out to me as being one of the better shabu spots in the peninsula Bay Area. The meat quality here is great and everything has always tasted good on my visits. You can order either AYCE ($40+) or a-la-carte here and choose your own broth flavors. The menu is simple and offers beef, lamb, and pork as protein options. There are vegetables, rice, and noodles available as well. I love the ponzu sauce they have available on the table tbh I could drink that sauce straight. Overall a top choice for shabu in the area in terms of meat quality, but not my all-time favorite because I personally love a larger variety of vegetables / fish / tofu / mushrooms to include in my hot pot and this spot has limited veggie options. It is also fairly pricey. Still a good option though if you're looking for a belly warming meal!

Yelp
So glad I can continue my COVID-19 weight gain with AYCE Shabu! Jokes aside, still delicious, food quality Shabu. They had seating right in front along the sidewalks with butane gas stoves. Not a bad set up, just glad both business and customers can benefit during these challenging times. Shout out to the servers! Great service! Thanks for a wonderful experience. I definitely missed a good restaurant service and was thrilled to experience it at Shabu house.

Yelp
I'm not the biggest fan of Shabu. I typically don't enjoy cooking my own food but I had to try to place out. My fiancé was insisting we go. To my surprise, it was actually a very pleasant experience! We ordered the all you can eat with a drink and got the spicy miso broth. VERY good broth! And the meat options were super good. Incredibly quality and quantity! We were full by the end, honestly a great experience!! Service was great! They kept the meat coming to our table that's for sure. The owner is very nice too, he definitely knows how to keep the eatery running smoothly! I would come back here with more people next time. I think the vibe of the place would give off a fun environment for a group of people. No rushing, just enjoying!

Yelp
I love how cozy this place is. Very friendly server who checked up on us frequently and the food was amazing. I got the all you can eat with all you can drink. First time ever trying a place that offers all you can drink alcohols. It was about 51 dollars for the all you can eat with drinks. Each person get their own plate of meats and it is a good amount as well. There are also vegetarian options as well. I would recommend the chicken and ginger broth. It was pretty delicious!

Yelp
AYCE hot pot! There is an option not to do AYCE but I think most people that come here do the AYCE! It is $35 a pop per person so save your appetite and make sure you can eat your money's worth! If you come from 5-6pm then you get 10% off your meal! We got the spicy tonkatsu soup base and miso soup base (you get to choose 2) the broth was very flavorful and delicious! They have 3 type of meat to choose from, beef, pork, and lamb. We liked the beef one the best as it was the softest one. There was not much hot pot items to choose from, the veggie plate was preset. But the meat was very good and definitely had quality to it! I did not mind but my friend wished there were more options to choose from. Would I come here again? Yes I would! Especially if I am craving some hot pot! Also customer service was really good! Everyone was friendly and attentive! In total we did 3 rounds of meat (8 plates of meat) for 3 girls.

Yelp
Dined in as a group of 5. There were two induction tops for the table and the broths we selected were Tonkatsu and spicy miso for one pot and spicy miso and ginger chicken for the other pot. Most of us ordered the large beef for protein while one of us ordered the large combination of beef and pork for protein. We made our own dipping sauces from the chopped garlic, chili flakes, ponzu, green onions, and chili sesame oil that were already on the table. We cooked our protein and veggies to our desired doneness, dipped it in our sauce, and ate it with white rice. I didn't think the broths had much flavor since I just tasted the sauce I dipped my veggies/protein in. It wasn't until I tried some veggies without dipping in my sauce that I tasted the broth and how salty they really were! The meal ended on a sweet note with a small scoop of ice cream. The choices of flavors were lychee, red bean, and matcha. I chose lychee-it was sweet. Service was good.

Yelp
shabu House has a great all you can eat hot pot option, I think it has a good amount of basic stuff, including udon noodles, cabbage, carrots, tofu, spinach, rice and a choice between three meat options. They give a few items to make a sauce. It was my first time having Japanese hot pot and I was impressed. They also had a good amount of soup bases to choose from. also the employees kept on checking on us and gave us a refill it as often as we asked.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite hot pot spots in the area! Their broth options are super good and they have high quality meat every time I come here. I also like how they have the option to do AYCE or just regular because sometimes we just don't feel like doing AYCE. Everything was perfect but they were out of udon the night we went so that was disappointing! Hopefully they will restock on it soon. Other than that our experience was good and will be coming back soon :)

Yelp
Love havin a shabu place next to my place. We did the all you can eat with spicy miso and spicy tonkatsu. Both really good broths! And the meat quality is pretty good. I just wish there was more items for all you can eat. Service was really good and ambiance is always nice with good music playing.

Yelp
Shabu House is our go to for AYCE shabu. It's $37 for AYCE, and $49 for AYCE and AYCD beer and sake! It's a really good deal. The meat is of good quality, broths are delish, and veggies are fresh. Beef, lamb, and pork all day. I like the house broth and the miso broth. Just the basics for the veggies. Don't forget to ask for extra sesame sauce. We get bowls and bowls of it. The meal also comes with ice cream! Don't know how many birthdays and other events we've celebrated here and will continue to. Always a crowd pleaser !

Yelp
Love this hotpot place!!! Quality of the meats are great! They even have the option for all you can eat and drink! Too bad I don't drink alcohol ! Little tip: you can ask for 2 different broths! They have split hotpot pots! Couple downsides: during busy times expect your food to take a while to arrive and it doesn't look like there is the best vent system in place so it gets pretty smoky. Pros: BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! They are very upbeat and always paying attention to when I run out of food to put the next order in! Very friendly! I will definitely be coming back! All you can eat includes ice cream (vanilla, green tea, and red bean)

Yelp
Service is usually suepr good, today might have been an off night. The miso and spicy tonkotsu soups were delightful I really liked the kobe and pork best but my aunt loved her lamb. For some reason we never got our pumpkin (kabocha) but that's OK. Definitely coming back, this must be my 4 or 5th time.

Yelp
best meat quality in all the hot soup places i've frequently in the bay area by far! + lamb a lil gamey but so delicious + beef gorgeous marbling and fatty + pork was super succulent vegetables are average did AYCE and AYCD, came out to about $60 pp when I went out in a group. sake was watered down but still good because of sheer quantity. we were serviced by who i perceive as the owner and he was just the best! so friendly, helpful, and never left us hanging. TIPS: - ask for minced garlic - ask for green onions - mix green onions/garlic with ponzu and hot chili sesame oil
